- Zaine (10/5): Would recommend to anyone who wants a quiet stay out of the city. Hire a car before heading to the property - Beautiful home and very traditional
- hajime (9/5): -
- NELSON (10/5): Nelson Australia - Stayed 2 nights. One of our most memorable stays in Japan. The old farmhouse was wonderful. Our hosts were absolutely delightful. They cooked breakfast and even dropped us off then picked us up from the local onsen at night. If you take the local train from Ilyama station to get there it's slow but great scenery. Nothing to dislike.
- Thio (10/5): Sweet stay in snow wonderland - The hosts were a lovely pair of seniors. They communicated very well throughout our booking and treated us hot lemongrass tea and yogurt with fruit jelly upon our arrival. The house was traditional, clean yet had all the modern amenities, including a washing machine. It was nicely heated in early March when there was still snow all around. When we left, we were given a pair of warm toasted sweet potato that tasted like candy. It was a sweet stay for us
- Emily (10/5): Perfect for workaholics like us who just needed a good rest in a picturesque town - Super pretty area
- takumi (10/5): -

- Mellissa (1/5): We didn’t stay - We like nothing we got there and left! The owner did not refund, we did not stay it was cold dark and had a funny smell and was sharing part house upstairs with owners! It’s not like what it looks like in the photos! There were piles of stuff in corners and if you are a foreigner you probably won’t fit in shower or toilet!
- Choong (10/5): Very cute minshuku with amazing breakfast -

- Cathy (10/5): Fabulous. - Such lovely hosts, and a fabulous property. It has so much character, and is sparkling clean. Everything was very comfortable, the kitchen fully equipped and stocked with basics. Easily walkable into town if you want to eat out, or enjoy excellent dinner or breakfast with the sweetest hosts imaginable. Leaving.
- yoshigu (10/5): amazing! - beautiful, comfortable, and clean. nothing
- Julian (9/5): -
- Nicholas (9/5): A traditional experience in a wonderful location for hiking, skiing, and particularly outdoor and indoor art, crafts, ki - Amazing hospitality from the hosts, lots of information and also communication (with fluent English) from daughter Nobu. Wonderful home-grown traditional breakfast at minimal extra cost. Authentic 160-year old refurbished village house/s. Fair to good wifi. Location in middle of the Tokamachi art/silk district and beautiful natural surrounds. Huge snows in winter, really green in summer/fall. Not easy if you are taller than 180cm or old - there are steep internal stairs and low doorways. A car is really needed to access the surrounding art scene and countryside. And you need an accurate location to find it if you don’t speak Japanese. The beds are also traditionally firm although there are many spare mats and blankets.
- shay (10/5): Amazing stay with charming hosts - Great experience with amazing hosts! Old and charming traditional house, in a quiet and authentic village. The futons could have been a bit more comfortable, but not bad at all (:
- Michal (10/5): - We had a fantastic stay in this beautiful, authentic old Japanese home. Its location is perfect for exploring the Echigo-Tsumari Art Festival, and there are plenty of onsens (hot springs) to enjoy nearby. We didn't even use the shower, preferring the onsens!
The house itself is a hidden gem, a testament to the owners' wonderful aesthetic sense. It's filled with beautiful old and antique Japanese treasures. It is clean, well-maintained, and truly a piece of art in its own right. Above all, the owners were incredibly kind and helpful throughout our visit. steep stairs
- WANNI (10/5): - 很棒
- Janika Ullrich (10/5): Perfekt! - Alles.
- Shay (10/5): Beautiful house surrounded by rice fields and hills, just next to a local train stop so very easy to access. - Beautiful family in a beautiful house, thanks very much for hosting us so nicely we wish we could stay longer. Nothing
- Mako (10/5): -
- Shum (10/5): Exceptional -
- Timothy (10/5): Exceptional - If you are looking to go to Niigata this is one of the best places you can stay. Beautiful location right next to the mountains, lovely hosts who cooked me an amazing meal on my last day there and drove me to the local onsens every night and a beautiful house with everything you could need. Could not recommend this place enough :).
- Gregory (10/5): What an honour to stay in this traditional 180 year old house - This quirky house has been lovingly restored and updated by Nobu and her family who live next door. The amount and types of wood used in the construction of the house is incredible, from the wooden staircase and hand-crafted hand rail, to the curved wooden bathroom, giving the feel that you are inside a barrel. It includes the washing machine, a huge shower room and separate, very snazzy toilet. With all mod cons, we had a very comfortable week here. Even the futons were OK for this old, unaccustomed body. The bedroom is covered in beautiful, traditional tatami. The 3rd floor loft has a hammock and chairs with lovely views of the countryside, which you can also enjoy from the dining table downstairs. The kitchen is well equipped and basic condiments are provided (oil etc), so it was easy to self cater. The house has air conditioners upstairs and down as well as kerosene heaters so we were very cosy despite record amounts of snow. We parked directly out front and the watering hose did a good job keep the area clear of snow. The supplied snow shovel and brush were a life saver. Our host family were sweet, taking time to ensure we understood all the facilities and gave us gifts of local food. Only one little gripe - it was so cold it was best to keep the bathroom door closed but there is no two-way lock on the door. That meant if someone was in the bathroom, you have to lock them in !
- Fonny (9/5): Kids get to experience living in an old house. - Quaint heritage house with excellent hosts ;)
They were so helpful & hospitable, recommended places to go with kids. Location wise its close to attractions.
- Anja (10/5): A magical place from which to explore the Echigo-Tsumari Art Field - This place is magical. We've been to Japan a few times and this was one of our favourite stays ever. We stayed in the beautifully restored guest house and enjoyed an amazing Japanese breakfast in the main house every morning. The owners are a wonderful and incredibly generous family, who went above and beyond and even drove us to local restaurants and a great onsen. As we didn't have a car, we went on a hugely enjoyable tour of the Echigo-Tsumari Art Field with the lovely and very knowledgable Nobu. Huge thanks to Nobu and her family for looking after us and making us feel so welcome. Nothing, everything was perfect!
- Gingercat88 (10/5): A gem in Tokamachi - We are so glad to find this gem! The hosts, including the cat, Mame, were most kind, warm, and hospitable. We went to the restaurants that they recommended. Ichihiro was superb, so good that we went twice! The host drove us there and back so that we could enjoy sake.
The place is just lovely - the decor, the space. Everything works well. Heating was great as the weather turned cold. Appreciate the washing machine too.
Despite the language barrier, we communicated well. Sincerely appreciate the oranges and persimmons that they gave us. They were so delicious! That we only stayed 3 nights. Would love to stay a week!
(10/5): Exceptional - Amazing experience, nice host, facilities are good. Country life is better here!
- Teck (9/5): For a unique experience, you should stay! - The lovely friendly and kind couple owners!
They helped us in searching for the art sites and restaurants, and the breakfast is cheap. good and tasty, super value for money! It is a bit out of the way for shops and restaurants.
- Ng (10/5): Very impressive and thank you for their kindness. - The hotel is so nice and clean. The furniture is artistic and special , the location is convenient. The host are so kind and lovely.
- Rise (9/5): A cute farm house in the snow country - I can only say good things about this place. I love every aspect of it and I feel at ease staying here. I wish I stayed longer!
At first I thought my room would be cold at night, but the aircon definitely worked and I slept comfortably. I had a slow morning sipping tea while sitting in the veranda, enjoying the winter view.
The family who runs the place is very nice and the cat is super cute. It feels more like staying with a host family than staying at an inn. The property is located in a small town with limited public transport. So, better plan well to catch the bus/train.
- Babette (10/5): A beautiful, homey place. We loved it. - Everything was perfect
- Queenie (10/5): Amazing stay with the best hosts 🙌🏻 - Arrived on a snowy day, once entered we are greeted by the kindest hosts and their lovely cat Ma-Me . them we are settling in this cozy beautiful farm house which is everything you imagined as living in the countryside of Japan, only even better in real life ❤️ the place is so spacious yet cozy, have everything you need, the breakfast and coffee made by our host is the highlight of our stay! Nothing
- Wing (10/5): Can’t wait to be back. - Absolutely warming hospitality. The 76 years old grandpa is as youthful and curious about life as a baby rabbit. I feel like home 💙 Nothing.
- Mackenzie (10/5): Exceptional - Absolutely incredible! We stayed for one night and had a lovely host family who welcomed us with homemade tea and drove us to the local onsen and sushi shop. The guesthouse was very cute and cozy and had a little balcony for us to sit and watch the snow fall! Highly recommend!
- Jimmy (10/5): It doesn't get more authentic than this! - The weather was very cold but we were very warmed by the hospitality of our hosts - Takeshi San and Yoshiko San, their daughter Nobu San, and their cute cat Mamezo Chan.
Dinner was an authentic Japanese dining experience that brought the farm to the table. The traditional Japanese setup, with a massive boiling iron kettle over a firepit, adds a unique charm to the experience. The food was exquisite, beautifully presented and delicious.
They have 2 units available. First is a family room which is part of the main building where the hosts live and where the meals are prepared and served. The traditional Japanese design of the room, coupled with the proximity to the heart of the guest house, contributed to a truly authentic experience.
The Second unit is a three bedroom house. The furnishings and design are more modern and whimsical, almost studio Ghibli like. My favorite was actually the long hammock on the topmost floor which became my personal sanctuary haha.
I left with a heavy heart because this was an unforgettable experience which will be very difficult to replicate.
- Konobu (10/5): Exceptional -
- F. (10/5): Exceptional -
- Louise (9/5): Surprising place with a great atmosphere and generous hosts. - This is a character filled home with with a wonderful old couple who look after the guests with great affection and care. We had an incredible breakfast with produce from their garden. Sweet place with great vibes. The bathroom is a bit on the snug side but the other rooms are huge and there are many places to sit in comfort. Although it is a small town, many restaurants were booked out - so leave for dinner early.
- Vivian (9/5): Best decision to stay in Naka Minshuku Sanzen - Rustic, beautiful house, very clean and comfortable, warm host, super yummy breakfast and dinner, plus a lovely cat ! Nothing

- H (10/5): So cozy, I wish I could have stayed longer! - They were so welcoming, even when I had a late arrival. I was so happy they were so kind and helped me enjoy the place even more. The food was incredible. I really enjoyed the homemade yogurt and herb tea when I arrived. It was such a short trip for me, so having to leave! I wish I could have stayed longer.
- Ksenia (10/5): Great hosts! Staying in a traditional Japanese house is a great experience. Highly recommend! - Breakfast, friendliness, great experience
