Guest Reviews
- Rui (10/5): Perfect place to stay at Bury - Nothing needs to be said. It was just perfect Nothing negative to say
- Steve (10/5): A really top quality brew pub with superb staff and a positive vibe. - Hannah is an especially proactive GM. The food and beer are of a particularly high standard and the ‘pub’ has a great atmosphere with very attentive staff. A recent comment was quite negative about parking; a whole thesis could be written about parking in Bury St Edmunds.
Drop off the bags and passengers who cannot walk very far and take the car to the Ram Meadow car park for £10.50 per week, a 10-min walk from the Old Cannon.
- michael (7/5): Enjoyed the quirkiness of this pub/brewery/hotel! - Breakfast was excellent-generous and good quality. All the staff were friendly and helpful. On site parking would have been helpful-we were recommended a car park which was 10 minutes walk away.
We weren’t impressed by the access to our room-via an exterior metal staircase which looked quite slippery.
- Steve (8/5): Lovely staff, pub and location - Great location lovely pub and staff
- Angus (10/5): Perfect pub hotel - Great location, comfortable bed, friendly staff. Nothing
- Kim (10/5): - We use The Old Canon Brewery quite often .location The parking situation is not good... we booked well in advance but was given a very small room
- UEA (8/5): -
- Elizabeth (9/5): - Friendly staff. Good breakfast.
- Matt (8/5): Great stay spoiled slightly by breakfast. - Room was nice and an excellent bathroom with large fluffy towels. Breakfast was painful. Only one member of staff on so service very slow and buffet not topped up.
- Michael (9/5): - This was our second stay, and we had a much bigger and more comfortable room. The pub itself is lively with a great atmosphere. We had an evening meal and breakfast, both of which were excellent. We knew this, but the very limited on-street parking is an issue, though unavoidable. There are car parks about ten minutes walk away, and there were no complaints in our party of seven.
- Sally (10/5): Brilliant - Great food, excellent room and very attentive staff. Booking.com say there is parking. There is not. Very disappointing.
- Jacek (10/5): -
- Ray (10/5): - All was excellent 👌 Nothing all good
- Gail (8/5): Short but enjoyable - The bed was comfortable and the room spacious. The bathroom was very clean. The staff were friendly and the bar and food were very good The pillows were very flat but other than that everything was great
- Simon (8/5): -
- SIMON (8/5): - Staff very friendly and excellent beers Parking is difficult
- Muhammad (10/5): -
- Ochoa (8/5): - The Room was very spacious and comfortable. The natural lighting was great! The stairs to take to the sleeping facilities were narrow.
- nicholas (10/5): -
- Kellie (10/5): - Friendly, helpful staff. Good atmosphere. Room very comfy and lovely breakfast. Will definitely stay again.
- Lynn (6/5): - V friendly staff No parking! Rooms could do with upgrade!
- Rosemary (9/5): -
- Elizabeth (9/5): -
- Sarah (10/5): - Great location
Breakfast was excellent
Comfy spacious rooms
- christopher (9/5): Excellent! - Friendly staff, very comfortable and well-appointed room. Excellent food! Picky, but a comfortable chair in the bedroom - there's room!
- Paul (9/5): Would stay again and would recommend to anybody as long as they were ok with the walk to the carpark - Staff were really lovely, friendly and helpful. The bar area were you eat was just so vibrant and bright, a pleasure to be in. The bed could have been more comfortable. We stayed in Room 1 and the mattress wasn't flat which did affect my sleep. Maybe a new mattress. Parking is an issue, it wasn't for us because we were totally ok with the 7 minute walk
- John (10/5): - Great beer and atmosphere
- Jacqueline (10/5): Home from home....perfect..... - It was like staying in a posh hotel....breakfast was superb......
- Goss (9/5): -
- Ruth (5/5): Comfortable but over-priced. - The room was comfortable and the shower room/toilet was good. The hot chocolate sachet was a welcome addition. I had a ground floor room. When I arrived the window had been left slightly open. Unfortunately, people were smoking right outside my window, so there was a strong smell of cigarette smoke in the room. For dinner, I ordered the 'five bean burger' and specified that I have an allergy to vinegar. The waitress came to check my dietary requirements, but when the meal arrived, there was a pot of slaw which included mayonnaise - which is made with vinegar. Also, the 'five bean burger' was actually something resembling overcooked felafel - definitely not a 'five bean burger'. Another in my group ordered the same but specified vegan. Again, his meal arrived with the mayonnaise-based slaw. Mayonnaise is made with egg which is not vegan.

- Wendy (9/5): Great location and breakfasts - Staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfasts were amazing and very filling. Complimentary hot drinks and biscuits in the room. Very close to the station as we were travelling by train and a short walk from town. Service charge put on the bill for evening food and drinks, although we were asked if we wanted it deducted we would prefer not to have it automatically added. Despite that we did pay it. Our room was directly over the pub which was okay but if you prefer an early night, could be noisy. But to be expected if staying in a pub.
- James (10/5): Beer on tap - Loved the friendly staff, amazing breakfast included in the price. Who wouldn't want to stay in a brewery, with an added bonus of an Easter beer festival. Loved it.
- Emma (10/5): Lovely and comfortable - Staff were friendly and helpful. It's a lovely pub, which sells lovely beer made by their own brewery. Room was lovely and comfortable and had everything we needed. Had a good sleep and a lovely freshly cooked breakfast Would definitely visit again. Vegetarian sausages would have made my Husband's vegetarian breakfast perfect. He wasn't keen on the smashed advocado.
- Alexander (9/5): Highly recommended. - Kind, friendly, helpful, and welcoming staff. Larger room than expected, clean, with very comfortable bed and hot shower. Excellent location, near to the town centre. Very relaxed pub interior, with superb beer. Hard to fault. The walls between the rooms are a little thin - noise travels (although, it was still perfectly quiet). No parking outside - but plenty about 10 minutes walk away. Breakfast a little basic, but still very welcome.
- Consuelo (10/5): - Ottima struttura, un vecchio birrificio.. camera spaziosa e accogliente, così pure il bagno. In 5 minuti si arriva in centro . Buona colazione e cena. Nulla da rilevare
- Neil (10/5): Staff were great, room and food were excellent. - Everything: room, drink & food. Nothing. I even got lucky with parking outside.
- Zoe (8/5): - Lovely staff, great food! Bed was very comfortable :)
Good location Front doors need oiling !
If you’re in a ground floor room its to noisy, you can hear people stomping around above you:(
- Karen (8/5): Well located independent venue - Location is good. Good value for money. Excellent breakfast
- Mike (10/5): - We have visited before and are always made to feel welcome..
Excellent breakfast.
Comfortable rooms
- John (10/5): - Location good food comfortable
- John (8/5): - Location, room, beer, food, friendly staff! A fair walk from the car park. Fortunately it was dry.
- John (10/5): - Location. Good room and very good food
- Stephen (10/5): - Friendly, helpful staff, good value for money. Quiet location a short walk from the heart of Bury.
- Shelagh (5/5): We will return for excellent draft but not to stay. - The warm room. Bizarre breakfast ordering system and very slow service. The code was badly written and had a passing staff member not intervened at 23.30 we would have been locked out.
- Jacqui (8/5): Was very comfortable, staff very accommodating too - Ideally located for our needs
- Gemma (7/5): I’d definitely visit again for the beer and atmosphere but not sure I’d stay there as a special weekend treat. - Lovely beer, nice atmosphere. Nice big beer garden. The pub aspect was lovely, the room however was a little disappointing for the price (£130 for the night). We were told the TV didn’t work as we were shown to our room, which although wasn’t the end of the world, was missed just before bed to wind down and drown out the noise from outside. Also would have been nice to have put it on when we woke up. There was no parking- again not a big deal as there’s plenty in town just a 10 minute walk away, but I expected the room and facilities to make up for that. The toilet flush was extremely temperamental. We ordered breakfast the afternoon before (smashed avocado) but they didn’t have any avocado the next morning. Again, small things that could easily be fixed and that you’d expect for £130 per night. Also I was confused about the food they did there because the website menu looked completely different to the ones on display there, so as it’s a little out of town we decided not to risk eating there and found somewhere in town instead.
- Paul (10/5): Perfect for our short stay :) - Lovely atmosphere, very relaxed, fabulous room, great food and beer. Nothing!
- Tracy (10/5): Great value, quirky stay over with a banging breakfast - The fact that we were staying in a brewery with a lovely pub feeling was fab.
Within walking distance of the centre.
Staff were very friendly & accommodating.
Food & beers are yummy, 😋 room was spacious and comfortable.
Great value for money with a fabulous breakfast offering included in the price. Set us up nicely for our onward journey to Calláis.
They have a lovely outdoor area that unfortunately we didn’t use due to the temperatures but it looked really nice. The only thing I could say was the room could have been slightly warmer.
- Larraine (9/5): Very pleasant stay. - Friendly staff.
Nice atmosphere Nothing
- Linda (10/5): A Perfect Stay - From the moment we arrived, The old Cannon Brewery did not disappoint. We loved the quiet location between the train station and the town center. Our room was spacious, comfortable, clean and quiet and the breakfast was delicious. The staff were friendly, helpful and responsive. There did in not seem to be one detail that the hotel had not carefully considered. And the cherry on the top: tasty beer in a bright attractive bar.
- Carmel (10/5): Lovely place and people this is second stay and have booked again - Lovely breakfast
- Julian (9/5): Great place!! Some lovely accommodating staff and keep up the good work. - Great location!! Very friendly staff and welcoming, great room which accommodated our dogs aswell
Amazing breakfast before we left Barked at by I would assume the duty manager when it was 22.30 to drink up now or go to your room with our drinks!! Put a little dampener on our end of eve!!
I’ve been in customer service industry for 25+ years and there are ways to talk to your customers!!
- Sir Paul (10/5): - The staff the pub the food and the v comfortable bed The only downside was the breakfast I have been in the trade for 40+ years a d i know if you have a busy breakfast service it can be difficult to get right , we booked breakfast for 8am we were there at 8am it came promptly however I feel the eggs and the bacon were probably cooked 30 + mins before unfortunately
- pia (8/5): One night stay - Lovely bar and the room very comfortable. Breakfast in the morning was lovely. Parking was a bit tricky, we arrived late at night and there were no parking spots nearby.
- David (9/5): - A great atmosphere. A real community spirit. There was a quiz night on the evening we stayed. Parking was a bit tricky but we managed to find a space.
- Owen (10/5): -
- Owen (10/5): -
- Julie (8/5): - Lovely atmosphere and staff
- Kerry (10/5): So lovely that we've booked to stay again! - Our room was light and airy, a lovely place to stay. We all felt really welcome - including our dog. The breakfast was beautiful, as was the food in the restaurant. Nothing.
- Valerie (10/5): A great experience. Would stay again - Staff are so friendly. Good food, great breakfast Nothing could be better
- Marilyn (9/5): Warm welcome, comfy room and good food in an individual environment. - Character, individuality, history, not too large, comfortable good sized room, good food, walking distance of the Apex theatre. Uncertainty of getting a parking space - compounded by the installation of two electric vehicle charging points. The area generally is not great for cars (due to the nature of the settlement generally and the fact that there is increasing vehicle ownership/use plus many builders transit vans also the constant need for delivery vehicles). There is a public car park in the general vicinity. N B Train travel was not an option for us.
- Rosamond (9/5): Good for one night stay - would visit again. - Good food and comfortable room for one night stay. Nice to be able to control heating in bedroom . Very interesting character pub. Service was slow at dinner - waited 45 minutes for starter. Shower in bathroom had mould/grime around bottom. Mattress on bed was a little hard for my liking.
- Hunt (10/5): Great place to stay - Great stay, lovely comfortable bed, fantastic breakfast, friendly staff. Nothing
- Harley (10/5): - Very clean Very hot when we walked into main pub
- Deborah (10/5): Bury St Edmunds is a lovely city and definitely worth visiting. - Our room was beautifully presented and very clean, it was also very quiet and comfortable. Breakfast was included, delicious and freshly cooked. There were also cereals, fresh fruit, juices and the best yoghurt I have ever eaten. The staff were lovely and the location was very good as it was an easy 5 minute walk into town and about 15 minutes walk to the cathedral.
- Paul (9/5): - Accommodation was lovely and comfortable.
The brewery space lovely and relaxing with fab drinks on offer.
Breakfast top notch🤩 Guess to be picky there for area could do with freshening up a bit but otherwise lovely for us
- Carmel (10/5): Enjoyable relaxing and looking forward to return visit - Everything was great and excellent breakfast that we had to leave
- ian (9/5): -
- Steven (10/5): A wonderful stay, staff are excellent, food, room all outstanding. Highly recommend. - The room was wonderful, and the staff were extremely welcoming and helpful from the moment we arrived. The breakfast was exceptional and again, staff really friendly & on hand to assist. Will certainly stay again. In the rain, the metal staircase to our room was a little slippy, but it does have grips to prevent falls or slips. Some older or less mobile guests may need to be made aware of the access to rooms.
- Lynn (10/5): Great place to spend a night whilst catching up with friends in the area We will be back! - Room was lovely and well equipped. Very comfortable bed - Duvet was like sleeping under a cloud! Breakfast was yummy! (Oh and hubby said the Man Overboard IPA was very delicious!! Not being able to buy Man Overboard in bottles :(
- kevin (10/5): Always first class - All good Nothing
- Karen (10/5): - Wonderful night's sleep in comfortable bed with quality bedding. Great power shower. Delicious breakfast. Welcoming staff.
- Carol Reading (10/5): - The staff were all welcoming and helpful at all times. Food and drink excellent.
- Robin (9/5): All good. Great beers, decent room, nice breakfast, good staff - Nice pub, good breakfast, decent room Bit noisy but didn’t go on late
- Alan (7/5): Loved it. Thank you. - Liked it's location - 5 mins walk into town. Quirkyness of an operating brewery. Staff friendly and helpful. Our room was right above the main bar area which was very noisy Saturday afternoon/evening. The main door coming in shook the room when it closed so relaxing was an issue. If your out all day not an issue. We had a medium sized aging dog who could not manage the rear steel staircase. Staff let us use an internal one but this came out into the main bar area and we disturbed people coming in that way because it was right next to a table in the pub. Perhaps not ideal for people with dogs or if you are aging or have a mobility issue yourself or have lots of luggage. There is a mews block in the pub which might be better if this is the case. I think the steel staircase should have more anti slip protection because this would be a problem in the rain/freeze.
- Jane (10/5): Good experience - Very nice room , good service throughout and an excellent breakfast included. Excellent meal on arrival. Good location near the town centre but quiet too. Friendly, helpful staff. Lack of parking could be a problem if you could not find a space. We arrived earlier but had to go in to town 1st, as there were no car parking spaces until later in the afternoon. It would also have been good to have known about the new loyalty scheme they have just put in place when we first arrived, before paying for our room and other items, which could not then be added to the loyalty programme after paying.
- Klara (9/5): -
- Jayne (8/5): Ideal to walk everywhere nice atmosphere - Good breakfast with plenty of choice
- Andrew (9/5): A great place to stay centrally in the town - Great location for our requirements
- Geoffrey (9/5): Lovely place - It was lovely place and the staff were lovely. Nothing
- richard (9/5): - Lovely friendly staff, excellent beer and breakfast Very little to dislike.
- Gillian (9/5): -
- Anita (10/5): Our second time staying here, this time with friends who we'd recommended it to. - Location, facilities, food and beers
- Cathie (7/5): - Unfortunately the breakfast we had been looking forward to was not available because there was a problem with the gas in the kitchen.
- Lynne (9/5): Enjoyable stay, central location, friendly staff - Comfortable great breakfast nice atmosphere Outside stairs to bedroom
- Steve (9/5): Perfect stay in lovely accommodation - Great welcome, lovely atmosphere and nice accommodation. Really helpful staff
- Jeff (10/5): - Great location, quirky hotel in a working brewery
- Victor (9/5): -
- Anne-Marie (9/5): -
- JOHN (9/5): - All Dirty radiator
- Padhiar (8/5): -
- Philippa (10/5): -
- Sally (8/5): Enjoyable short break - Tasty breakfast, especially the scrambled eggs.
Comfortable, firm mattress
- Penelope (8/5): It is a good place to base yourself while in Bury. We have booked again in June - It was comfortable and the staff were very helpful. The breakfast was good. Our room was a little chilly to be comfortable
- Penelope (9/5): A great place to base yourself in Bury. I’ve booked again in June. - Room was comfortable and the pub was good to meet friends and family This time I stayed the room was warm, so all good.
- Gail (9/5): Good - Lovely had great stay staff lovely and really friendly,
Bit of noise from upstairs accommodation
- Philip (5/5): Good location, bathroom bit dirty, tasty breakfast, probably wouldn't recommend. - Breakfast had been kept warm, but it was tasty, food didn't come at the same time as our friends on the same table. Continental choice was poor.
Lady who checked us in (blonde) was lovely. Outside area is cool. Shower was dirty, mould and dirt on tiles and seal.
For the price could have done with a shower gel in the shower, very right with toiletries for 2.
- Steve (8/5): - Excellent location, good value and friendly staff. Extractor fan in bathroom too noisy for too long and noisy pipework.
- Neil (10/5): -
