- andrea (10/5): - everything. olsen open air bath at 300 yen is amazing, and so were dinner and breakfast. just a suggestion: a shuttle for the station
- Hua Chi (8/5):

- Ryan (9/5): Beautiful retro ryokan in the middle of nature - The location was very convenient. It has its own bus stop! It was very close to an easy waterfall hike. The scenery around the ryokan was beautiful. The private onsen was really nice as well because they didn't allow reservations. You have to understand what you are getting with a ryokan like this. Is it the nicest one? No, but that's OK! It's a retro place that is well maintained with wonderful staff and a great quiet place in nature. The rooms are a bit tired, but that's part of the retro vibe that you don't get in a lot of places in Japan anymore. Just embrace it and you're going to love it. There were a few spots of mold in a few places, especially the unit bath. Other than that no complaints here!
- Justin (9/5): Highly recommend. A fantastically relaxing retreat. - There was a lot to love about Kose Onsen. The setting was fantastic with trails nearby and ways to appreciate the seclusion. The private onsen was fantastic. For that matter, so was the public onsen. The meals were very good, particularly the dinners. The room was pleasant, and we especially loved the window that opens up out to the stream right outside of the room. Amazingly relaxing overall. The staff was also very friendly and helpful. These aren't so much things that I didn't like as things for others to consider. Getting to and from the property by bus took a little bit of planning. It wasn't super hard, but it took a little bit of extra thinking ahead as you have to be back at the property fairly early before you miss the last bus. For most people that travel by car, this probably isn't a big deal. Just something to consider if traveling by bus. The staff don't speak much to any English. Again, not a big deal and something that I know I am privileged to expect in non-English-speaking countries. But again just something to consider if this might be a turnoff.
- rose (8/5): - L'intera struttura!
Es gilt das First Come, First Serve Prinzip.

- Ehj (9/5): Superb - Fantastic dinner. Good Japanese breakfast, of which I am no fan.
Nice private onsen. Staff has poor or no English.
- Ditte (10/5): Exceptional - Great place - it felt like traveling back in time to a place of tranquility and calm
- Fanny (9/5): Superb -
- Jollywng (6/5): traditional Japanese Onsen style - A quiet retreat with a rich sense of history in the area. The rooms and furnishings beautifully reflect the charm of the past, featuring décor and facilities that preserve an authentic 1980s traditional Japanese Onsen style. Perfect for those who appreciate a nostalgic and peaceful atmosphere.
- Michael (5/5): Passable -
- Yan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Daniel (10/5): Exceptional -
- Teeraboon (10/5): Exceptional -
- Judy (8/5): Full ryokan experience on a budget - 2 onsen options - public indoor & private 露天風呂(outdoor rotenburo). I spent ~2h over multiple visits in the onsens (1 night stay)
Water temperature (42 Celsius) was perfect, and left skin feeling great
Friendly and polite staff
Operates like a historic ryokan (i.e. call reminders for meals, setting up futon, etc)
Quiet & good room size.
Note: Yes, there's water damage/mildew, but it is an older ryokan. Decent for the price and authentic experience Location - car recommended. Bus is OK, but only walk friendly attraction is the ryugaeki falls. Access to Shiraito falls is cut off (Shinanoji trail damaged)
Meals were a mix of western and Japanese (which felt weird). For example pesto sea bream.
- Poom (10/5): Nice secluded Ryokan - Staff very friendly and helpful. Staff speak little english, so be prepared to use a translator. Onsen water is very good. Food is very nice, standard kaiseki meal. Breakfast is typical japanese breakfast. Private onsen is free of charge. Hotel easily accessible via bus. Check the schedule before time since the bus isnt 24 hours.
- Man Wai (10/5): -
- Michael (2/5): Just don't bother... - Private onsen was very nice. Building is in a beautiful natural setting quite far out of town. Busses stop running in the late afternoon. Uncomfortable bed; dated and shabby furnishings. VERY mediocre food - tasted like all the ingredients were past due. Kitchen staff kept insisting there was no spinach in the meal (my wife is allergic) in spite of us seeing spinach in the dish. No apologies, just didn't seem to care. We left a day early. By FAR the worst place we stayed in a month in Japan.
- Constance (2/5): Expensive and poor quality - Service was pleasant It was the most expensive place that I stayed in while visiting Japan. Unfortunately, it was also of the lowest quality. The bathroom smelled bad, there were stains on the walls, a knob was missing from the cupboard, wooden chopsticks and worst of all, the air conditioner was broken.
- Tze (8/5): Very good -
- Cédric (3/5): Poor - Nice external onsen, good food, quiet and green place Dirtiest bathroom ever. Moisture and dirt. Dusty bedroom
- Johannes (9/5): Superb - Quiet and cosy Ryokan with retro-charme and good food
- Robyn (10/5): Exceptional -
- Clement (9/5): Superb -
- Carla (8/5): Very good - It was a great experience but I expected more from the breakfast, although it was also good.
The room was clean, the onsen was really nice.
Very easy to get to the city with a bus.
- Daniel (10/5): Exceptional -
- Abby (10/5): Exceptional -
- Chiahsiung (8/5): Very good -
- Rosalia (8/5): Nice & quiet, very good for relaxing holidays - Very traditional & small hot spring hotel in the mountain with nice view. The hot spring bathroom is quite small.
- Martina (9/5): Superb - Very nice old style ryokan surrounded by nature. Very cozy private rotenburo. Nice japanese breakfast.
- Michelle (4/5): I wish they cleaned the bathrooms... - I liked the room in terms of size, of furniture, of decoration. The private onsen was really nice too. The thing that bothered me the most was how dirty the whole room, and especially the bathroom, was. Everywhere you looked at there was mold from a long time ago. Attached is a picture of the kettle that's supposed to be DRINKING WATER for your tea. Disgusting.
The Onsen is free, but when you do the checkout you have to pay tax, mine was ¥300.
The hotel is an hour away from the city so they could have more vending machines on site. You could only buy beer, water, tea and cup noodles and they were overpriced.
Location is horrible for going around, no taxis near, and if you do get a taxi it'll be around ¥3,000-¥4,000 and the only bus from the hotel was only working from 10 am to 4 pm with a 40-minute gap. So for the whole day there would be 9 buses in total.
The check out is 10 am, the earliest checkout I have ever seen.
This is my 5th week in Japan and this stay was my worst experience (other factors involved).
Due to the lack of cleanliness, I don't recommend this hotel.
- Anonymous (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sirirat (9/5): Superb -
- Mabel (10/5): Exceptional - The hotel is located in a quiet area, very peaceful. The private onsen rooms are so impressive, must try. The staff is very nice and helpful. I don't mind coming back if I have a chance. None
- Anila (7/5): Good -
- Antoine (10/5): Exceptional - The location, the calm and the establishment. Well, everything was great, but the bathroom is really really cold 😅
- Michael (7/5): Good - Too dark - difficult to see and read. No hooks for coats or towels. Breakfast poor
- Pak (8/5): Good place to quiet down and be alone. - Surrounding was very quiet and serene. Not crowded It was a bit cold in the common areas as the weather was getting cold.
- Damon (9/5): Very relaxing experience in a remote location - Very remote onsen in a national park away from the busy city so noise pollution was non existent.
There was a stream running from outside our room so which was very relaxing if you enjoy those sounds.
The private onsen which you could book when you want to use it was clean and extremely relaxing. The water temperature was excellent.
The staff were excellent and very accommodating as we did not speak any English at all so had to communicate via google translate. Really only accessible by car as public transport was limited during the night. We did see a bus stop just outside Kose.
The mountain roads leading up to the hotel are pitch black at night so be prepared and drive carefully. It is a tolled road into a national park so during the day you have to pay 500 yen but during the night the toll was unmanned. The hotel staff did say after we arrived that had we mentioned Kose hotel we would have been let in for free, if you had payed the hotel would refund you if you keep your receipts
- Mei (9/5): Superb - The hot spring is good and location is beautiful.
- Mark (10/5): I will be returning that is for sure. - Very good private onsen's and amazing food. nice and secluded It was all good
- Nana (8/5): - There are some insects in the room
- Fabrizio (9/5): Superb - Staff was very kind and patient since I do not understand Japanese too well. The food was great There is not much more to see nearby than the hotel itself and you would need a car or rely on an infrequent bus connection (with most passenger going to Kusatsu, so ensure to tell the driver you need to unboard earlier or it will take forever to get your luggage back)
- Lye (8/5): nice and calming experience with the onsen. loved that it’s quiet and peaceful. - tranquil surroundings , nice meals far from train station
- Ivana (8/5): Very good -
- Msjosefine (4/5): DISAPPOINTED ! - I'm a regular with booking.com for 10+ years n true onsens hopper and I must expressed this is 1 of those bad ryokans we have ever experienced!! Traditional old we can expect but toilet was dirty n service was zero.. food was bad unlike a real ryokan we were served western food for both nights! They still used kerosene as heater n whole ryokan was smelling of kerosene!! Utterly DISAPPOINTED n for the price we paid....it was really NOT WORTH IT AT ALL.. Everything from the service to food to room and omg the onsen was really bad..
- Anonymous (9/5): a nice cozy Japanese style hotel in the mountains. -
- Kevin (9/5): Superb -
- Alexander (8/5): - The outdoor private onsen is amazing. Staff with limited English but willing to help. The booking system for the private onsen is based on first come first serve, no reservation ahead so you have to keep calling front desk to check for availability....that needs to be changed. Other than that, I'd recommend it to those who enjoy traditional Japanese Ryokan.
- Mandi (10/5): Exceptional - The hotel near the river is so beautiful!!!! and the private hot spring is excellent!!!! Food is perfect, staff is friendly as well!!
- Pok (10/5): Exceptional - the staff, the environment, the room none
- Jolene (8/5): Very good -
- Chatcharphol (7/5): Good -
- Shima (4/5): Disappointing - The room was was not cleaned well enough. Hair was on the floor and toilet was disturbingly dirty.
- Verified traveler (4/5):
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The staff was very friendly and professional! The onsen (public and private) were clean and nice. The rooms could use a little bit of an update though.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - a little bit far from the town,
must drive to get there.
there's no lift in the hotel.
and the hotel has a curfew , you have to back to the hotel before 23:00
- Hok man (8/5): - The environment is good. It has two private pool which is 40min for each section.
It can be booked & get the key in the front desk.
But the dinner set is very basic.
Not close to Karuizawa station but it is good for a night stay👍👍
Took ard 15-20 mins by bus to the hotel.
