Guest Reviews
- Rebecca (10/5): Worth every penny - This is an excellently laid out house in a lovely location, with an exceptional host. Everything is provided for (laundry, kitchenette for light cooking), and the rooms and bath are super comfortable. The neighborhood has most everything one could need, and what a joy to wake up next to the Kamo River (the host thoughtfully includes info for bird-watchers!)
- Elke (10/5): -
- maria brezo (10/5): Amazing - We had a wonderful stay. The owner was incredibly kind, attentive, and highly professional—she made everything feel easy and welcoming from the very beginning.
The house is new, spotless, and very comfortable, with all the details carefully thought out. It also offers beautiful views of the river, which made the experience even more special.
The neighborhood is quiet and peaceful, allowing you to truly relax and enjoy a more authentic side of traditional Japan. It felt like a much deeper and more meaningful experience than staying in a busy area.
We would absolutely stay here again and highly recommend it.
- Hue (10/5): Had a great stay. Will definitely come back again when in Kyoto. Great location. Great amenities. Great hospitality. - Nice view of Kamo River. Near to attractions, shopping district, restaurants and convenience stores. Had a washer and a separate dryer.
- Solange (10/5): Very nice accommodation and lovely host! - Beautiful! Excellent stay!
- MINNING (10/5): Very good experience to explore Kyoto. - The location is great and the house has a wonderful view which offer perfect ambiance for long holidays. The house owner pays a lot of attention of cleaniness and the beautiful details of all the settings. Kitchen facility is enough for simple breakfast prepation. It's the best experience to enjoy the breakfast in front of the window view.
- Takeuchi (10/5): -
- Sebastian (10/5): Cosy, Scenic, Outstanding hospitality - Shirasagi was extremely clean and had all the amenities we needed for our stay and more. We were extremely comfortable during our stay.
The space was beautifully decorated and had great views of the Kamo river. It was also very cozy at night. The house was more than spacious for two people.
Our host was super friendly and accommodating to our needs. We also told her that we were on our honeymoon and she decorated the space with fresh flowers to celebrate with us. She really went above and beyond to make our stay a pleasant one on more than one occasion :) We enjoyed our stay. Thank you. None! We wish there was an extra toilet so we could come back and stay with another couple more comfortably, but that’s just nitpicking
- Etan (10/5): - A beautiful house with a living space overlooking the river and 2 sweet bedrooms. The house is so well maintained and we got all the help we needed , renting bikes etc. Nothing
- Kimberly (10/5): - Shirasagi Kyoto was the perfect house for our family of three. We stayed for four nights in November. The machiya was immaculate, and the location, perfect. The host has thought of every detail and is very thorough in explaining how everything works. The highlight for us was watching the wildlife outside our window every day. The Kama River attracts herons, ducks, hawks, and nutria. You can stroll in either direction along the river for miles. There is a small supermarket a five minute walk away, and the Kiyomizu-Gojo subway line is a 5-8 minute walk. Super convenient.
Shirasagi Kyoto has a small kitchen but isn't really set up for cooking meals. There is a small microwave and cooktop. No oven, toaster, or coffee maker. We brought our own coffee dripper for that first cup of the day.
We can't recommend Shirasagi Kyoto more highly. It was awesome.
Note:
There are steep stairs going up to the living space.
We were very comfortable with three people. More than four might feel a bit crowded.
You will be taking your shoes off a lot. The floors are all tatami, so shoes are a no no.
The host provided Yukata robes, which was such a nice touch.
We would not hesitate to stay at Shirasagi Kyoto again. Nothing
- Caroline (10/5): Excellent! - Beautiful property. Very well maintained and appointed. Well located with beautiful river views, easy access to both Gion area and Kyoto station, and walkable to a number of other subway stations. Supermarket and convenience stores very near by. Communication and care from the host was excellent. My son loved learning to play the koto (Japanese instrument). Thank you! Nothing
- YUSUKE (10/5): また来たい。 - 施設が清潔だった上に、宿の方が施設内や周辺の説明をしてくれてとても分かりやすかった。
- Prudence (10/5): Shirasagi is the perfect Kyoto river house. - We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Shirasagi. The host was so friendly and kindly provided a thorough explanation of the house and lots of local information. Kaori San even showed my husband how to play the Koto instrument. This was such a unique experience.
The river views from the house are sensational! Located right on the beautiful Kamo River in a quiet residential area, it is only a short walk to a supermarket, 7-11, bus stops and abundant dining options. The river wildlife is fascinating, including many birds, fish, turtles and we even spotted a few Nutria (similar to a Capybara).
Kiyomizu-Dera is a pleasant 30 minute walk away.
The house is walkable to the busy Pontocho and Nishiki market areas, via a pleasant 30 minute (or so) stroll along the picturesque canal or river side. If you prefer not to walk, the Kiyomizu-Gojo station is nearby and and only a 1 station ride to Gion-Shijo. You can also take the train in the opposite direction to reach Fushimi Inari, or further on to Uji or Nara. Other famous Kyoto sites can be easily reached using the local buses or taxi's. There are also hire bikes nearby.
The house itself was light and spacious. The decor was a perfect mix of traditional and modern. Everything was spotless. and Kaori San provides a cleaning service every few days.
Thank you! We loved our stay and will definitely be back one day. Nothing at all.
- William (10/5): The property is absolutely amazing. The view from the living room was stunning! The property had everything you could ha -
- RONG (10/5): - Completely clean and well organized house;
Attentive and helpful host;
Convenient location with a great view of the river.
- Dan (10/5): Awesome - Everything was top notch! None
- Katie (10/5): Will definitely stay again when we vacation in Kyoto! - From the moment we were met by our wonderful host, we felt welcomed and at home. The place is beautiful and clean in a wonderful location. It is close to a train station and walking distance to bars, restaurants, a grocery store and 7/11. Nothing
- Workineh (10/5): Convenient location to explore Kyoto and the surrounding areas - Best location and amazing host Nothing really.
- Julie (10/5): Ideal location along the river with very helpful host. - Beautiful, immaculate apartment by the river with easy access to public transportation and local attractions. We loved our stay. The host was very kind and helpful. We would love to return someday. We loved everything about it.
- Ian (10/5): Exceptional - The owner was extremely helpful, location was excellent, not far from anywhere. The house was spotless Nothing
- Runge (10/5): Exceptional - The house was immaculate and clean. Our host was great, explained a lot of things to do in the area, gave recommendations, prepared a hot pot (shabu-shabu) meal for us, and taught a quick lesson on the koto. The house has a huge window that overlooks the river and gives great views of the mountains and eastern Kyoto. I would stay here again in a heartbeat.
- Kristen (10/5): Perfect stay in beautiful location. - This is a beautiful house! The location is perfect - so close to everything but still so peaceful and quiet as it is on a small street on the river. The view is fantastic. It is very comfortable and stylish and has everything you need. We definitely recommend it and hope to come back soon!
- Robert (10/5): Perfect location with a thoughtful owner - Initial meeting was very informative and the location was excellent. The owner is very thoughtful and friendly with a lot of local info on nearby places and activities. The view from the upper floor was quite nice as well, day or night.
- Yu (10/5): Exceptional -
- Apostolos (10/5): Amazing property managed by an amazing host - Shirasagi at Kyoto is a beautiful place, conveniently located by the river with easy access to the city centre, market and many sightseeing locations. The house is elegantly decorated, offering a balance between modern and traditional Japanese design, it was spotless clean and provided everything one might need for a short stay in Kyoto. We particularly enjoyed the view of the river from the living room and the full sized Koto instrument that decorated the lobby area. Excellent communication with the hostess who also welcomed us in person on our arrival date.
- Robert (10/5): Exceptional -
- Catherine (10/5): Perfect Kyoto place - Fantastic little house with lovely host. We loved our stay!
- Philip (10/5): Wonderful stay and would definitely stay again! - The location, the view, the koto lesson, the cleanliness - actually everything! Nothing
- David (10/5): One of our best stays yet in Kyoto - We loved the beautiful atmosphere in this house, it was one of the nicest places we have stayed at in Kyoto. The location is outstanding, close to most things you would require and very close to many attractions that people want to visit.
Our host was very kind and helpful. She spent considerable time acquainting us with the amenities and features of the property. She made the experience very positive for us.
The property was amazingly clean, and well organized with all things you would need for a comfortable stay. The futons and the western style beds were so comfortable!
We truly thank our wonderful host for providing us with this amazing experience. Would recommend highly. There was nothing to dislike in this home.
- Ann (10/5): Exceptional - Comfortable beds and warm bedrooms and we sleep like a baby . The property is very clean and with full amenities. Owner is very responsive and attentive to our needs. All good
- Yi (10/5): Exceptional -
- Derek (10/5): Great place to stay with friends! - The host did a great job!
- Linda (10/5): Beautiful property in an excellent location. - Beautifully designed and cared for, this property suits the needs of travelers who don’t want to stay in a hotel and prefer a place to call their own to relax after a day of visiting Kyoto
- K.wong21 (10/5): Exceptional - Everything was amazing, the whole place was so beautiful. The host met us at the house gave us an extensive tour and also taught us how to play the koto. We feel so well rested after staying at shirasagi we didn’t want to leave. I would stay here again and again!
- Wan (10/5): Worth to stay and love the stay. - The river view is terrific . So calming stay here. The staff is super nice. Nil
- Rachel (10/5): Exceptional - The view was fantastic!
- Sagar (10/5): Exceptional - The host is amazing. She gave us an extremely thorough walkthrough of the home, and gave us great recommendations for Kyoto. She was responsive on WhatsApp and helped us immediately when messaged. Great location and view along the river as well. Would highly recommend, especially when traveling with groups.
- Le (10/5): Exceptional - The big window and the view. The host was really nice, showed us a Koto tutorial.
- Angela (10/5): While Kyoto is busy, the Shirasagi was tranquil and quiet overlooking the river - Location fantastic Nothing
- Joseph (10/5): Excellent location & host, offering a meticulously well-presented apartment you will want to enjoy. - Excellent location, with a great view over the river towards the old city. Walking distance to everything you need - old city, great restaurants, bars & main shopping precinct. The apartment is meticulously cared for by the apartment owner/host, who met us on arrival and took great care and time to explain the apartment facilities, overview of surrounding attractions and provided a lesson in how to play the Koto (traditional Japanese string instrument) that is in the apartment. Host actively sought to provide assistance where possible - on our day of check-out she organised taxis for us to get to the train station, including meeting us and waiting with us until they arrived. The apartment is one where you want to spend time in and enjoy, even though you have a great city to explore. While it added to the 'only in Japan' experience, the thin futons directly on the tatami mats we slept on did not make for the most comfortable sleeping experience.
- Lin (10/5): Exceptional - The hospitality from the owner; the design and cleanness of this building; the view and location was also perfect! I was feeling I could stay there for a longer time. The surroundings were so quiet and peaceful.☺️ The property was kept so clean that I had to push myself to maintain it clean as well (just kidding😆). I loved everything of this property except the dryer machine was a little hard to use (it was outside, so I had to keep getting in and out to pass the clothes from washing machine to the dryer). But it wouldn’t be a problem as long as you have something like a bucket.
- Ofer (10/5): Perfect for a family of five - Shirasagi exceeded all my expectations. The location was great, the rooms were perfect for a family of five, the second floor was cozy and had a nice view of the river, and above all we appreciated the amazing hospitality and assistance by the host (sorry, I didn’t get her name).
She offered to help with our luggage - both receiving it when we were on a trip and shipping it to our next destination. Probably the best service I’ve ever had and great communication too. Nothing
- Vivian (10/5): Exceptional - I booked this home for my 5 person family travel to Kyoto. On the first floor, 2 of us used the bedroom with futons. 3 of us used the other bedroom with 2 beds and 1 sofa bed. The futons, beds and sofa bed were extremely comfortable (beds were on the firm side which is our preference). Each of the rooms contained humidifiers and had heated tatami flooring. Between the 5 of us, we needed more plugs to charge our devices, but ended up just unplugging existing lamps in each bedroom to do so. There was also a place to store our luggage so that we had more space in the bedrooms. The single shower/bath was smaller but functional while the sink area was fully stocked with amenities including yukatas and towels and bath mats for each night of our stay.
The living space upstairs had a beautiful view of the river, a small dining table/2 chairs, and small functional kitchen. There was also an extra table and chairs to accommodate all 5 of us. The kitchen was stocked with bottles of water for each day and nice quality instant coffees and teas for all of us. Even the chinaware was fancy - Givenchy and Royal Copenhagen.
This home was exceptionally clean - the cleanest home I've ever stayed in for travel. Every corner and crevice contained no dust. It was incredible how thoughtful and thorough the host was in creating this space for her guests. She provided a tour of the home with an explanation of how to use all of the appliances. She provided a Koto lesson and gave us recommendations of where to go to see the cherry blossoms. She thought of everything that we could possibly need and provided quality products in every way possible. Overall, we loved staying at Shirasagi Kyoto and look forward to staying here again! While the location was excellent for site seeing (walking distance to Kiyomizudera, Gion, Shirakawa lane, etc.), the home is located on a smaller road that various taxi drivers were unwilling to drive directly to. With or without luggage, this was not a problem since it's a short walk from the main road. This is not something we disliked, just information for future travelers to this amazing place.
- Lok (10/5): Our best stay in Kyoto. Even better than the photos show! - Tastefully appointed and fully equipped, had absolutely everything we needed. Most other Machiya appeared to have a dark interior, but this was fresh and bright (more to our taste).
Flowers were even changed every 2 days.
Peaceful view of the river, while we lazed in the living room upstairs, where we could see the Sakura in full bloom across the river.
Several great cafes in the vicinity, literally a few houses away, which were recommended by our hostess. Leaving.
- Ross (10/5): Exceptional -
- Wai (10/5): Perfect view and location, perfect in room equipment, perfect host. - What an incredible place and view we never seen. We stay home for a long time even we don’t want to leave. Duck/crane swimming in the river, and full Sakura view we can’t forget. Very nice host and service. Quiet location but we still enjoy with few cafe nearby. Definitely will go back to stay. Price not cheap only
- Linda (10/5): Absolutely amazing, the highlight of our stay in Kyoto! - It’s a beautiful and tranquil space. We loved how close it was to Gion but away from all the crowds. Right in front of the water and the view was amazing. House was clean and had everything we needed, very comfortable for a family of 4. The owner was very thoughtful, friendly and extremely accommodating. We definitely would come back again, and wished we had more time there! There wasn’t anything we didn’t like.
- Chun (10/5): Exceptional -
- Elijah (10/5): Relaxing. - Everything is well thought out and the attention to design. The house is well equipped with comfortable accommodations. How to check in was confusing at first and I did not know I needed to contact the host by email to coordinate the check in time. It was near perfect.
- Charles (10/5): Home from home - Fantastic welcome, support, view, location, facilities and property. Hard pillows
- Jacky (10/5): Highly recommended one-of-a-kind stay - Beautiful property and a great location. The owner was extremely helpful and you could tell she took pride in the property. An unexpected bonus was Koto lessons! She was patient in her explanation of the instrument and it ended up being a memorable part of our trip.
- Mika (10/5): Exceptional - Stuff explain everything in details and made us feel comfortable. It's got everything you need, great location, the highlight is the view from the living room in the morning! I would definitely stay again if I ever go back to Kyoto!
- Chenxin (10/5): amazing view and experience. - That's amazing view and experience. I recommend all people to stay here. I took early check in by contacting with the owner. She answered very quickly . All the things in house very convenience and comfortable!!! I took lots of pictures!!
Little expensive but be worth!!! no
- Marina (10/5): Exceptional - The view is stunning, the facilities are the best we’ve had, and the hostess was the best ever, helped us so much! Would definitely recommend to everyone.
- Anonymous (10/5): Amazing experience - Felt so warmly welcomed. And it was probably the cleanest hosted place (non hotel) I’ve ever stayed. I was briefly taught by the hosts how to play koto, it was such a wonderful experience.
The view is also breathtaking and everything in the property was so comfortable.
Highly recommended! n/a
