Guest Reviews
- Rafaela (7/5): Curfew at 11! - I loved it, it’s fascinating to actually live in a traditional place. The walls are very thin and you hear everything that is happening around the house. Also there’s a bell which rings every time someone comes in or out and an old lady comes to see who comes and goes.
- girasoli (10/5): Con il piccolo giardino in casa - Un posto davvero speciale.
Grazie 🌻
- Daniel J (10/5): Wonderful host, great ryokan experience and centrally located - I love this 100+ year home and its traditional layout with tatami rooms and cozy, warm futon beds. Nothing, love this place
- Simona (8/5): -
- cruz Lopez (6/5): -
- Lydia (9/5): The most wonderful ladies who run this ryokan made our stay so great! So accommodating and caring for their guests! -
- Mattia Enrico (10/5): -
- Shyam Swaroop (9/5): Comfortable stay, warm hosts - Positives:
1. Warm and caring host
2. Comfortable stay, Japanese style All positive but just an information, it is not possible to pay by card at the property despite booking mentions otherwise.
If you are a foreigner, it might be better to pay online before you arrive for better exchange rates.
- Yasmin (9/5): A homey ryokan in a quiet neighborhood near the center of Kyoto - I love this homey little ryokan! It's run by two old ladies who don't speak English and a younger one who does, and they are all so sweet and really do look after you like family, asking how your day went and offering you a bath when you come back in the evening (it's kept hot: they will take off the cover and set it up for you). The location is great: just a few blocks from the shopping area of Shijo / Karasuma down the narrow back streets into a quiet neighborhood. Both subway lines as well as many bus lines are nearby so it's easy to get to points of interest as well as Kyoto Station. Meals are not provided, but there are a lot of restaurants and convenience stores in the area. Rooms are all Japanese style, with futon to sleep on, and a yukata (cotton kimono) to change into. There is a shower as well as the deep bath, and instructions on how to use a shared Japanese bath when it's your turn. As a woman traveling alone, I always feel very safe and welcome when I stay here.
- Megumi (10/5): -
- Emily (10/5): A wonderful ryokan in a good location for walking to many sites and close to good food. Super friendly owners made the e - Everything was great. Not only was the room comfortable and the staff friendly, but the room was aesthetically pleasing. This was my second stay. Nothing.
- anthony hibon (10/5): -
- Tutku Berberoğlu (8/5): Overall it was a good experience, and would book it again. - The owner lady was very friendly. I didn't feel like I'm staying in a hotel. It felt like I came to visit my old relatives. She was very kind and caring. Location was really close to many places to visit. Futon was very comfortable. It was a little too cold and turning to AC above 23 was not okay... Also walls were too thin. I was lucky so only the last night I heard every single noise from the room next to mine thanks to it being vacant for a while.
- Jiarui (10/5):
- Antonio (10/5): -

- Luuk (9/5): -
- Arnaud (9/5): - Parfait ! Merci !
- Dario (10/5): If you want to feel and be "part" of Japan's history and you're on budget, this is a must. - Ryokan experience cannot be explained with words. It was magnificent to get feel of that part of Japan's history. Owner was very pleasant and even got me nice macha tea.
- Julia (10/5): -
- Ilaria (8/5): - The rooms are very comfortable and big! They offer you a green tea cup when you arrive. It's like to be at your grandma's house, nice place! Be aware that you have to be home before 23pm, since they close the ryokan during the night. So you don't have so much autonomy/time independence.
- KORCAN (7/5): - Traditional Japanese experience Not very comfy if you are a bit tall. Curfew.
- Sonya (7/5): - The ambience, the size of the room, and the bed is comfortable. Communication is difficult.
There is a table and they served us snacks and tea when check-in. However, outside food/drink seems like not allow in the room, because the lady stoped us at the entrance when she saw us bring some food (from convenience store) and used her body language"X" to tell us not to eat. We gave up and respected her, so we told her at least let us store the food in the refrigerator, unfortunately, we received a "no" from her again. The weather was cool so we kept the food in our room and never ate them (to show our respect)
- From here BCM or the house rules, I didn't find any "no food/drink allowed" remarks.
We were truly disappointed about this and decided to check out as soon as possible on the next day and we consumed the food at our next hostel - rushed there and finished it immediately :)
- No sound proof at all which we already expected and accepted before check in.
- Not recommend to light sleepers.
- Macey (10/5): Wonderful! - The hosts were absolutely lovely and made us feel very at home. We were able to experience traditional Japanese living, we really enjoyed the traditional bath!
- cassandra (9/5): I had a lovely time, the hosts were so kind. Would stay again if I happened to come through without a tall person with m - Lovely hosts and really cute place, good location as well. I would not suggest it for anyone over about 5’10”. I am 5’6” so everything was the perfect height for me- just barely, but my husband being 6’ even had to sleep at a diagonal often with one shoulder off the futon in order to be mostly comfortable with the blanket covering his toes.
- Martin (10/5): Memorable - Authenticity
- Vlahos (9/5): -
- Torea (9/5): - La propreté, l'emplacement, le prix, le logement impeccable. Rien
- Juan Camilo (10/5): Family Charm Ryokan - The staff is so welcoming, the room has the magical traditional Japanese charm, and there are restaurants, convenience stores, and temples in the surrounding area.
- Sira (2/5): - Close to the Shijo Takakura metro station The owner was a shrew, a harpy.
- Pierre (10/5): -
- Vincent (7/5): -
- Sa (8/5): -
- Marie-Claude (10/5): - This olace is great! The ladys who take care of this place are nice and friendly. We are very near from multiple restorant and shop. Its was really nice to live a japanese experience in the Ryokan. The ladys lrepare for us the traditilnal bath. Every evening we had a great tea. The place is spotless. Even thought we have to share toilet and shower its really convenient. We had good sleep. I recomand this palace to anybody who wants to try a Ryokan. For sure if I ever go back in Kyoto i would go back there. Also it really quiet!! Great place that I warmly recomand
- Jan-Peter (10/5): - This was such a beautiful stay in the heart of Kyoto. The hosts were so nice and forthcoming and I even got offered a tea together with the host. They always greeted me warm-hearted and saw me out when leaving always wishing me a good day. They were very helpful and eventhough they close the doors at 11p.m, once my train was very much delayed they staid up and opened the door for me. Eventhough it’s not far from the main street the nights are calm. The street where the „Ryokan“ is located offeres several very good restaurants so make sure checking them out.
- Rohkeya (10/5): - If you wish to stay in a traditional ryokan and still get the option to be near dining and shopping, I would highly recommend this place to everyone! It’s very close to popular shopping centres, great local restaurants, and the subway/bus stations. The family who run the ryokan are amazing and are so attentive to my needs. This place truly did make my Kyoto trip so special! I will definitely be coming back next time :)
- Johanna (8/5): - Lovely Japanese ryokan experience, the host is a friendly old lady who speaks little English Not super central but well connected with bus service
On checkout day my futon and towels were removed while I was out for a morning walk..I still wanted to take a shower and chill in the room before I left, but this way I was basically checked out before time. I didnt like this especially since checkin time is also very late (4pm). May also have been a language barrier issue.
- Piotr (10/5): Great place to stay, with very kind and helpful lady as an owner. -
- Vincenzo (10/5): Wonderful family run traditional ryokan - This wonderful family-run traditional Japanese inn in Kyoto was one of my favorite places that I stayed in while in Japan. The rooms are cozy and traditionally Japanese and the bathrooms, like most ryokan, are shared. It is centrally located yet very peaceful. The doors lock at 11pm for security and I didn’t mind at all. It is run by very kind people and every night that I was there, I felt like I was coming home.
- Xiaojing (8/5): Very good -
- Aleksandra (10/5): Thanks to our amazing host! - The host is very kind and helpful person, right after we checked-in she brought us green tea and cookies, was always there to care for her guests. It was a pleasure to experience such hospitality. The rooms are clean, they have all you need. The place is very conveniently located - near the station.
- Coralie (9/5): Superb -
- Demetris (10/5): I wish I booked more nights here! - I chose to stay a night in a Ryokan just to see what it’s like. It turned out to be our most comfortable stay!
- Huge room compared to what you typically get in a hotel, we had our own little garden, futons were surprisingly comfortable for a good night’s sleep.
- Cleanliness of bathroom, washroom and toilet impeccable! They had all the amenities, even spare packaged toothbrushes!
- The property felt very safe and rather private, I did not come accross another guest during my one night stay.
I wish I could speak Japanese to properly thank the adorable lady at the entrance, she asked us many times if it wasn’t a problem that the room is traditional Japanese style, but we loved the experience! We could even leave our bags with her for a day after checking out.
We wish we had booked more nights here instead of hotels! No food or breakfast on offer, but kombinis are a short stroll away.
- Zena (10/5): Exceptional - The location is great, 5 mins away from Nishiki market and lots of shopping and good food around. The Host is a sweet elderly lady who runs the place. If you want a traditional ryokan experience this is the place. I would definitely come back for the next Kyoto visit.
- Wade (9/5): Superb - If you want a traditional Ryokan in a good location with a no frills, but very acceptable amenities, this is your place! Very friendly and helpful owners make you feel at home in the Ryokan. No meals or onsen available. Basic traditional home base to explore Kyoto and feel at home.
- Pau (9/5): Lovely place at the centre of Kyoto, with a very traditional vibe but very welcoming for foreigners. - The staff were incredibly nice and it felt like staying at my grandma's house.
- Tamás (8/5): Very good -
- M.ilyas (10/5): Exceptional -
- Isaac (10/5): Exceptional - The staff was very friendly and kind. We had the chance to practice our basic Japanese with the staff. The facilities were very nice, clean, organized and as we expected, traditional Japanese. Located close to the mini market, temple, restaurants and metro station. Everything was excellent
- Vangelova (9/5): Superb - +great location
+great experience as a ryokan, pretty comfortable
+kind owners
-take in mind if you stay for more than 1/2 nights that it is too silent after 11 pm It’s not appropriate to take a shower cause you can wake up someone
-there is an 11pm curfew
- Yasmin (10/5): Lovely traditional Kyoto stay - This traditional inn gave me exactly the stay in Kyoto that I'd hoped for! A short walk from the bustle of the Shijo Karasuma shopping area, in a quiet back street, this is a comfortable home where the sweet ladies who run it welcome you back at the end of the day like family. They speak very little English so if you have some Japanese ability, it's very helpful, but they have a welcoming area at the entrance with English language guide books, maps, pamphlets, and other useful items for their visitors, and they have made up handy sheets in the rooms explaining (in English and with pictures!) how to use a Japanese bath and put on a yukata and other unfamiliar aspects of staying in this type of lodging. And while you stay here you will have a comfortable futon to sleep on, a deep hot Japanese bathtub they will heat up for you in the evening (as well as a shower you can take any time), and a fresh thermos of hot water with tea bags and a cup in your room to come back to in the evening.
The location is very convenient for using public transportation as well as for local shopping: both the foodie Nishiki market and the very broad-ranging Teramachi shopping street are just the other side of Karasuma St, and both subway lines that cross the city are there too as well as multiple bus lines. Gion and Pontocho, with their geisha-centered streets, are 10-15 minutes' walk away across the Kamo River. There are convenience stores nearby where you can drop off your luggage to be sent to the airport or your next destination, as well as pick up something to have for breakfast. Lots of interesting restaurants of various kinds, too.
There are lots of modern hotels of various luxury levels around this city where you can have the same comfortable, familiar experience as in any city. Staying here will give you a uniquely old-fashioned Kyoto experience that will make you feel you have really traveled to a specific place that is not like where you have been before. Nothing! I loved staying here and will be happy to be back again.
- Christine (10/5): A lovely ryokan - Oh I loved this place and regret that I had only 1 night there. It's run by an elderly woman who is super friendly and laughs a lot. It's lovingly old fashioned, clean and traditional. The owner had the heater on and ready for me to have my shower as it was 4° out. I would definitely stay here again
- Kananta (10/5): Exceptional -
- Dimitrios (8/5): Very good -
- Cian (8/5): Very good - The staff were excellent, the authenticity and styling was amazing. Early curfew of 11pm made it difficult to enjoy nights out without stress of having to make it back in time
- Martin (9/5): Superb - Very kind service, the room was big and comfy, came with a yukata for the stay, and I was welcomed with matcha and a delicious sweet I was aware of the curfew and it didn’t really affect me, but I can imagine the hard cutoff at 11pm would’ve been annoying if I had stayed longer.
- Ben (10/5): Great location and lovely hosts -
- Alessia (8/5): Authentic ryokan with a beautiful garden - The location was perfect, close to the metro and with a really nice neighborhood. Pleasant view from our room that was facing the tiny garden in the ryokan. The owners were very kind 😊 There is a curfew at 11pm and we had to change our plans during our stay in Kyoto 🙁
- Hiu (10/5): Exceptional -
- Arianne (10/5): - The property is a classic modest Ryokan, VERY unique and super cute. Everywhere you look at is spotless, organized and very clean. The area is great, you can walk anywhere, and transit is also a few blocks away.
- Carla (8/5): Very good - Typical Japanese ryokan. Felt like authentic home.
Close to Kyoto center You need to be at the ryokan before 11pm , can be a problem sometimes if you would like to explore night time
- Angela (10/5): - Lovely property with the sweetest hosts. Prime location too.
- Remmelt (9/5): Incredible experience, would recommend any day! - Very authentic japanese experience! Hostess(es) were incredibly friendly and helpful. The futon was a bit thin, my western back had some trouble with sleeping on the hard surface 😅
- Sébastien (8/5): Very good -
- Mélanie (7/5): careful with the curfew !! - The owners are super nice. The place is ideally located in the city.
The place is clean.
This is an interesting experience which is just not to everybody’s liking.
If you like to be autonomous, this place might just not be for you. The ryokan is a traditionnal experience, the ladies owing the place were extremely clear on that. They would remain next to you when you come and go from the place, just because and you have an 11pm curfew to respect.
The place is thus a bit old but they would explain it is part of the experience.
- Aleksandra (10/5): Exceptional - This place is really extraordinary. It is run by a family (that owns this place for more than 70 years!) and you really feel like you are visiting your grandma there. The hospitality at this place was amazing was unmatched and the staff provided us with everything (tea, pajamas, bath supplies, WiFi, small table in our room). The lady was so nice and she greeted us every time we entered and every time we were leaving this Ryokan. Everything was extremely clean and it was a great experience to sleep in this traditional Japanese hotel. Truly it was worth every yen. 11/10, I truly recommend and I will stay there again for sure if I am ever back in Kyoto. Everything was perfect truly, nothing can get better than it already is.
- Jennie (7/5): Good -
- Noemi (10/5): Lovely experience!! - I loved it!! First time in a Japanese traditional house and I enjoyed so much. I travelled in august so was very hot, but room has AC so temperature was not a problem. (Also, No mosquitos at all). My room was super cozy, they provided towels and a Yukata to wear in the room, and mattress was so comfortable! The owners, two ladies, are the most lovely owners I’ve ever met!! Kind and always willing to help you, they gave me a cup of tea with a small dessert to welcoming me. I definitely recommend this experience!
Just a little advice! For some reason the address brought me in front of the temple near the Ryokan not exactly in front of the property, I recommend to write “Ryokan Nakajimaya 旅館 中島家” on Google Maps to find it!
- Cindy (9/5): Superb -
- Simone (9/5): Superb - The place was very traditional and very japanese. The two women are very kind and very nice, and this made this place shine.
- Amine (7/5): Good -
