Guest Reviews
- Jean (4/5): Never again - Mould around windows, door didn't lock properly, windows didn't open and close properly. Breakfast was passable but overall, not a good experience.

- Carolyn (10/5): Good room with fab food available - Spacious room with good facilities. Food at the pub was very tasty and good value for money Nothing
- Jill (5/5): Passable - The breakfast The long wait to check in,
- Attiq (2/5): Very poor -

- Anonymous (8/5): Enjoyed the experience, I would stay again. Very reasonable price . - Breakfast was excellent, evening meal was excellent , staff are very friendly and attentive to your requirements.
- Dumitru (4/5): Disappointing -
- Ian (8/5): Very good -
- Graham (6/5): Great character and potential, but not quite hitting the mark - Nice characterful building and the majority of the staff were friendly and welcoming. Has the potential to be a great place but it felt like the staff/service/food wasn't quite up to it. Hopefully we only caught them on a bad day. Bar service was very slow with one very nice lady serving that seemed rather out of her depth. Room was a little dirty with some stains on throw cushions and spiders in webs around. Breakfast in the morning was a bit disappointing, we didn't get an explainer when we came in about how to access the juice, toast, etc, and had to figure it out once the other food arrived which was a bit confusing. Food at breakfast and at dinner was average.
- Katy (7/5): Great location - Practical location Just pay attention when booking that the kitchen is closed on Monday evening
- Alan (7/5): Good -
- Wade (9/5): Superb -
- Katie (9/5): Superb -
- Sara (8/5): Handy location for the South Downs and great pub food - We enjoyed a comfortable stay and great pub food. Interesting with the county boundary running through the pub. Very welcoming hosts and knowledgeable about the pub history.
- Christopher (7/5): Pubcation stay - Food was good. Drinks pricey.
Be aware that this hotel is midway between 2 towns, yet it
is not served by any bus service. So it's self drive or taxi (ubers don't exist) for a night out. Taxis are at a premium, so the hotel advises to book very early to avoid disappointment.
- Emma (10/5): Lovely hotel! Great walks! Lovely people! - Amazing stay at the flying bull inn. Room clean, beds comfortable, tea and coffee in the room. Dogs welcome, and ours was made to feel right at home. The staff were lovely and friendly and the service was fast. Highly recommend booking a stay here if you want to stay in comfort and enjoy good food/drink. We enjoyed some lovely nature walks close to the hotel, so perfect for a get away from the daily grind without the need to drive anywhere for a couple of days. Not applicable
- Kirsty (10/5): Exceptional - Great space and breakfast. A little outdated but clean.
- Rachel (6/5): Lovely friendly host, but some bits of the hotel were a little tired - Good location for our event Was a little tired
- Ryan (7/5): Good -
- Henry (6/5): Fairly basic accommodation but at “budget”price (so no complaints). High point? - Food definitely better than average. - Nice beer garden - but right by busy road . Dinner was extremely good - succulent (chicken) , well balanced, VERY tasty. Breakfast used quality ingredients (eg sausages - though slightly underdone for me and sausage skin hard to pierce - though tasted lovely). Accommodation rather basic - BUT not expensive- so on balance fair.
- Anonymous (7/5): Room fine and enjoyed our stay. Evening meal very good. - Good breakfast and friendly staff. Very quiet on our visit not many staying at that time Garden view was not. Just overgrown shrubbier.
- Alan (8/5): Very pleasant very accommodating friendly staff -
- Vijay (7/5): Overall it was ok - Cosy venue and met what we wanted for our stay Even though the place was clean, it could have done with a deep clean. Certain parts of the room had dust and even in the pub area we could see lots of dust around.
- Philip (6/5): Pleasant - For our needs the position was excellent. We had breakfast... enough muesli on display for half a bowl, very limited range of anything else. Full English was well cooked, but the order was not as we had initially given. Not the most cheerful host.
- Keith (8/5): Very good - good dinner night before. bed comfortable. Quiet room overlooking wild meadow
- Neal (7/5): Good -
- Paul (8/5): Very good - Room ok, food ok. Requested secure bike storage but the reality was locking it up outside at the back of the pub
- Darren (10/5): Exceptional - Excellent breakfast, comfy bed, and hot showers. All within a cosy pub atmosphere Slightly remote but has a small town 2 miles away
- Rowland (5/5): Passable -
- Larry (10/5): Exceptional -
- Brian (10/5): Exceptional -
- James (5/5): Okay but nothing to rave about - Could do with updating very 1980’s
- John (10/5): Exceptional -
- Norman (6/5): Was Ok for a nights stop over. Would not stay again - Breakfast was Ok We went for the buffet. 1 choice of yogurt! 2 choices of Cereals!
All served without a smile.
We had a meal the night before, this was very good. A better choice of breakfast on the buffet side. Do not know about a cooked version because we did not have one.
- Sharon (6/5): Happy dogs - Dog friendly. Ground floor and accessible. Leaky shower room, broken radiator valve
- Anne (9/5): Disabled Room - Nice helpful staff, good food, breakfast exceptional - full English and buffet. We had the disabled room, which was very well fitted. The bathroom was amazing. Parking was very good as we were able to park right outside our room. We felt the room could have done with a deep clean as it did smell a bit doggie (maybe a guide dog had been in room as it was a disabled room) and the carpet was stained in places.
- Mira (5/5): Adequate place to stay and convenient location. Evening meals very nice but cooked breakfasts awful. - The room was adequate and the staff were friendly. The evening meal was exceptional and very tasty, all compliments to the chef! The cooked breakfast was awful. The bacon was so hard we couldn’t even cut it. My husband and I had to pick it up with our fingers as it was as stiff as a board and try to eat it. I tried to chew a piece I could “tear” off but left the rest as it was disgusting. The breakfast chef also added ground salt (quite big granduals) on top of the mushrooms so they were not only crunchy because of the salt on top but also absorbed the salt so much that each bite just tasted of salt. We should have complained but we generally don’t like to, but they need to have a word with their breakfast chef!
- Martin (6/5): Pleasant -
- David (7/5): Good - Good for short stay
The room was clean with extras like iron board, hairdryer and limited toiletries all came in useful
Comfortable and clean bed with a firm mattress
The cooked breakfast was very good. The rooms were a little tired looking and needed updating.
A little worried about the locking mechanism on the room door, didn't look that secure.
The room heating was only on for short periods of time.
Limited choice and quality of non cooked breakfast options. Cereal, fruit, yogurts, Bread etc..
No option for late checkouts
Staff were approachable and in the most part friendly, but not always accommodating.
Thought the accommodation was slightly overpriced..
- Stephen (8/5): Great but could do better - Rooms are good. Breakfast is good. Staff are friendly. Food in the evening was messed up, but I think the girl was new, so it is forgiven. Man at breakfast isn't very friendly.
- Anja (5/5): Passable - Breakfast, bed Noise overnight in room ?air conditioner. Horrible room freshener.
- Alan (9/5): Superb -
- Neil (3/5): Great location, but the hotel needs to sort out the smell of the room. It was horrendous! - Location was great and the bar excellent. The room was great value for money. The hotel room was well equipped for a one night stay. However, the smell of the room almost made it impossible to stay. I had to leave both windows fully open all night in cold conditions to try and get rid of the smell. Not sure if it was down to blocked drains, but it smelt like there was a dead rat under the floor. The price of the room was excellent as was the location, but the smell of the room was horrendous and would put me off staying again. .
- John (8/5): Very good - Was a bit cold in rooms
- Lindsay (8/5): Very good - Large room, very comfortable bed, comfortable armchair, good cooked breakfast. Only choice of two cereals.
- Steven (7/5): No special but suited our needs - Ideal location breakfast good
- Susan (8/5): - The staff were friendly and the food was excellent x
- Andrew (3/5): despite glowing 4star Trip advisor review, it did not match up......could not recommed. - Dinner just about acceptabe and breakfast OK but bacon uneatable, like leather.was offered another sausage, but too late. Room small, welcome poor. Humidity problems in bathroom and on bedroom windows. Carpet rather grubby, OK tea and coffee and kettle provided, but so little room to move..
- Jill (10/5): Wonderful stop over. - Extremely easy to find, bedroom v.well eqipped (hairdryer, iron plus ironing board) and with bottled water.
Staff very friendly and food was very tasty and good value for money. Breakfast was delicious.
- David (8/5): Very good - Great place to stay..
- Nick (7/5): Good - All good nice staff
Very comfy bed
Good food The WiFi wasn’t good in my room Dorset 🥴
- Neal (9/5): Superb -
- Ellie (6/5): Pleasant - The staff were friendly & very accommodating
& the room was clean & comfortable just a bit tired but was fine for our flying visit.
The breakfast was lovely & freshly cooked
- Philip (7/5): Good -
- Douglas (8/5): Very good -
- Robert (9/5): Excellent overnight stay for where we needed to be. - We were to be allocated a special room for dog owners (with less chance of disturbing other guests). We were told there was a plumbing problem, so we were accommodated in the main hotel. That worked smoothly. We didn't meet any other guests, so perhaps there weren't any.
I paid the expected £12.50 fee for the dog. I had forgotten our breakfast was included in the main price. That was a bonus. The light on the quite steep stairs was broken, so a bit dodgy.
Like so many places these days, there seemed to be no toilet brush. I don't see why a maid has to clean up my mess!
- Williams (1/5): Bad - No response
- Kevin (9/5): TOP i would be more than happy to stay again. - The staff were very friendly and made you feel at home, you can order your breakfast time and change your requirements daily.
Food in the bar restaurant was exceptionally good, very tasty and of a high standard.
The room was comfortable and very clean. Bathroom was very clean but is showing its age. could use some renovation.
- Poly (10/5): Very pleasant. Comfortable and clean. Highly reccomend. - Very pleasant stay for our team at the inn, no complaints from any of the lads, which is always a bonus! If we are working within the area again, we wouldn't hesitate to stay again. Worth the money you pay ten fold. There's a lot worse for a lot more money on here, so, to find this for such a good price was a hidden gem to say the least. Thank you from all the team at Poly UP.
PS: The biscuits are un-real! No dislikes.
- Vanessa (7/5): room is well equipped but small. fire was lit, Dinner was ok. nothing special - convenient location. serves breakfast lunch and dinner customer service could be improved. Heating in bedroom didn’t work when we first arrived luckily it was fixed within a few hours.
- June (10/5): Comfortable, friendly and plenty of parking - nice thought by leaving biscuits in the room - Left early so didn't avail of breakfast
- Michael (9/5): Superb -
- Margaret (8/5): Nice stay if all amenities were available - Fabulous location for visiting friends & family We weren’t made aware that the pub closed at 6pm & breakfast was much later than advertised on Booking.com
- Mike (7/5): Good -
- Tom (7/5): Good -
- Gillian (6/5): Adequate - I booked 5 rooms and all of them were cold on arrival. Temperature set at 9 degress! We all had aspects in our rooms that we weren't happy with but as only there 1 night we managed.
Checking in took too long and we were late for our function.
The cost of breakfast (which I thought was included) was extremely high.
The lady doing breakfast was wonderful and very accommodating which is why I have scored the facility higher than I should have. Time to check in - over 30 mins which made us late for our function.
Rooms far too cold.
In the 5 rooms different things not as clean as should be
Cost of breakfast
- Rijneke (6/5): not booking again on a Sunday.not book breakfast - the open fire in the pub no food on Sunday evening
breakfast during weekdays 7.30 till 8.30.
too early if not working.should have been told when we booked.so paid and did not use. no
had to asked to put heating on in room at 16.30 when we arrived.
- Rosanna (10/5): Exceptional -
- Julie (8/5): Very good -
- Wayne (4/5): Disappointing -
- Sarah (5/5): Dissappointng - Clean and nice breakfast Were 2 beds not 3,view overlooked a building/rubbish collection rather than pleasant garden as expected.Paid extra for this room due to it stating there was a double and 2 single beds
- Louise (9/5): Perfect stay x - It was cute welcoming and staff were very friendly x the food in the pub was fantastic x
- Pat (7/5): Good -
- Keizo (8/5): Very nice and enjoyable traditionall English Pub. - Full English Breakfast is very good, although everything should be so pre-ordered and paid at check-in time.
We enjoyed the breakfast itself, with selectable items choose from before the hot plate ready, we like the self-toasted grainary bread. They provide thr pub lunch and dinner menu, flied sea food is quite nice.
And spacious bed room and large bath tub heals make us very much.
- Jean (4/5): Bed comfortable and it was fairly clean but pricey for the standard - Nice area The fact that staff were absent. No communication, no one around to speak to about issues. All the electrics in the room blew late at night leaving me in total blackness. it took 30 mins before I managed to contact out of hours emergency. Room was small and dated. No one around in the morning as I left. I had no where to leave the keys so left them in the lock which was unsecured but had no choice. Very disappointing.
- Richard (8/5): Very good -
- Liz (9/5): Quaint, quirky and friendly pub with great rooms. - This is a delightful pub in Rake, Liss. We stayed overnight and had dinner and breakfast. Staying in an ensuite double room.
The room was clean, comfy and had all the facilities required.
It was pie night in the bar and restaurant. There was a great choice of meals and the pies were fantastic. The pies we had were full of filling and delicious. There were other non pie options. Breakfast was great and was cooked fresh for each customer.
Really great place to stay and excellent value. Nothing
- Cherif (7/5): Satisfied - Friendly staff 15 pounds for breakfast is a bit much.
- James (9/5): Superb - Breakfast was very good
- Rachel (9/5): Superb - Staff very kind and helpful. Room was cosy. A bit dated Wet room needs some attention . Needs upgrading
- Sarah (8/5): Short and sweet! - It was clean and well appointed. The manager was helpful, kind and considerate. Nothing springs to mind.
- Elizabeth (9/5): Superb - Extremely friendly and helpful staff. Very comfortable room and excellent food in pub! We had to kill a number of spiders in the room
- Julie (6/5): Pleasant - Bed comfortable staff very nice Food was too expensive and not very good when it arrived at table breakfast was a let down very small for £16 each
- Alec (9/5): Superb -
- Chris (8/5): Pleasant stay - Area was nice.
Breakfast and evening meal good.
Ale in bar was very nice, and log fire was a plus.
Staff were quite friendly. Room was a bit cramped.
Not much room for our suitcases.
- Barbara (7/5): Good - All as expected. Have stayed before.
- Yvonne (8/5): Welcoming and comfortable Inn with good home cooked food. - Very comfortable bed, great shower, very tasty and well cooked breakfast. Made welcome to check in immediately when I booked at very short notice for which I was very grateful. A very convenient and well-run place to stay in an area not well-served by affordable hotels. All good actually, perhaps breakfast could have been extended to 9am for late risers!
- Tim (8/5): Quick weekend break. In lovely setting - Simple, clean and comfortable.
Beautiful part of the country.
Warm fire in the pub creating a lovely atmosphere
- Roger (5/5): Ok -
- Philip (8/5): Very good - It was fine The meal was far too small so I was still hungry after eating
- Andriani (10/5): Exceptional -
- Carolyn (7/5): Pleasant stay - Clean and cosy Limited disability support in accessible room eg: grabrails in shower were suction pad based which are non weight bearing. Alarm call pulll cord out of reach as tied up high on the wall.
