Guest Reviews
- Tom (10/5): Roseville Visitor - Nice older hotel, very clean, modern room, able to park right in front of our room. Would stay there again if I were staying in Taft. Only negative is the ice maker serving the complex was not working but certainly not an issue.
- Frank (8/5): - Nice older motel. Was comfortable.
- Nichole (8/5): Topper - The staff was very friendly, the room was clean, and it was a great value.
- filimon (8/5): - No comen
- Patrick (10/5): - The owner is very nice and the place was super clean.
- DENISE (10/5): - Good stay. Close to the wildlife refuge I volunteer at during the summer. Would stay again.
- Rolf (10/5): - I've stayed here in the past and you cannot beat the price and convenience.
- Daniel (6/5): - Bugs
- Pavel (8/5): - You often get what you pay for. I paid very little and got very little. That was expected. The room was very small and smelled a little, but it was also clean, tidy and no insects of any kind. I was hoping for a clean cheap motel and that is exactly what it was :) I don't put 5 stars just because at 5 stars people expect things to be perfect, which it wasn't. For example, the walls are made of cardboard and you hear every single car driving by on the street behind. So bring ear plugs :)
- Jeff (8/5): - Nice hotel in a very small town. Seems mainly workers stay here from the oil fields. Room was clean, quiet, affordable.
- Matthew (10/5): - this is my regular go to when on solo motorcycle trips to this area. All the things I want to make it an easy overnight stay.
- Sulimar (8/5): - Good
- Mieczyslaw (10/5): - Clean and quiet plus good price.
- Marco (10/5): - Some pretty black and gray cats live in the area. They will not approach you if you don't call them over. Also, they do not fight with each other or make any noise. Some people feed them and pet them. I was one of those fortunate folks. That was the best part of it for me!
- Carrie (10/5): - Very nice people
- Jeff (8/5): - I don't need anything fancy. A clean room, quiet and great parking. Good price.
I would return.
- Amy (10/5): - Very clean and cute property.
- Lillian (10/5): - Good
- Andrea (8/5): - conveniet classical motel
- Brittany (4/5): - Smelly, itchy bedding, dead roaches in the room.
- Raul (10/5): - Clean property and the rooms, air conditioning
- Matthew (10/5): - Great place to stay on an overnight trip
- Aaron (2/5): - Sewer smell in room, loose toilet....and I mean loose. AC unit quit in the middle of the night...woke up sweaty at midnight…..finished my night's sleep in the front seat of my car.......never again
- Gregory (8/5): Quiet Motel in the heart of Taft - Great motel centrally located in Taft. Comfy beds, quiet room and good condition.
- Chunyang (6/5): - Quiet, clean, convenient parking, and friendly service. But there is no shampoo and the refrigerator is broken
- Maithanh (10/5): - Great customer service, quiet
- Vadim (8/5): - Topper is a no-frills motel in Taft CA. I chose this location to rest overnight for my supernloom photoshoot in the Carrizo Plain. Late check-in and check-out were seamless, the room was clean. My only complaints would be 1/ no drinking water in the room; 2/ the blanket was thin and, with this weather, too cold; 3/ the air conditioner was noisy, and 4/ room service vacuum cleaned the next room around 6-7 am which was too early in the morning. Overall, a decent place to rest for the money.
- Eric (10/5): - Great place for the money!
- kevin (6/5): Not great but not the worse either - the hotel is a small little place in a small town. It was clean but nothing above that. the table and chairs to sit on are falling apart and the bed felt like you are sleeping on a piece of plywood. It was the hardest bed I've slept on. Now I do understand its a small town motel but I did expect just a little better.
- Merry (10/5): - Only here for a late check in and early departure however it’s clean, quiet and has all that I needed. A little off the main drag, which is where I like to stay.
All in all, just what I was looking for and great value for money.
- John (10/5): - Very friendly staff, who kindly gave us an upgrade to a large room with all the facilities we needed. The second best motel of our two week trip!
- Rolf (8/5): - A bit of occasional traffic noise. Other than that, the place was an excellent value and worth a trip off of I5 to get there.
- Ricardo (10/5): - clean and good service
- Lisa (10/5): - What I liked about Topper motel is that it is family run—not one of those national franchises—and this is what distinguishes it as far as homey feeling, personally invested staff and the feeling of being in a one and only place
- Chuck (10/5): - The owner was very nice. Had great conversation with him. Room looked like it has been remodeled recently. It is not a high end place, but was quiet and very clean.
- Stephen (10/5): - The property is amazing. I travel to Taft several times a year. I will definitely be back
- Richard (8/5): - This place looked like an 50s era motor lodge and given the reasonable price we had our doubts but we were pleasently surprized! The place had been tastfully remodeled within the last year or so top to bottom inside and out. The staff was admazing and friendly. One warning is the the rooms were on the small size. For the money you can't beat it!
- Sebastian (10/5): - Clean Rooms, quiet area, plenty of parking, has accessible pool area. For my 1 night stay I have no compliants. Friendly front desk staff.
- Le (10/5): Clean and Quiet - Pretty clean and quiet room on weekdays. A good place to take a rest if you travel from SF to SD
- Michael (8/5): Adequate and clean - Comfortable room with all the basic amenities needed. Check in was speedy and staff was super friendly too. We stayed in a room with one queen bed which was quite small but adequate for one night. Mattress seemed better quality and newer. The water in the pool was cloudy and not heated. We had dinner at the attached restaurant, LaSalsa (not the chain), and it was quite good. Would stay again.
- Yajaira (10/5): - Very quiet and clean. The rooms are nice and inexpensive. The woman at the counter was very pleasant
- Wesley (10/5): - Excelent to US
- JAMES (10/5): Great little gem - Wonderful staff, small room but fully equipped with essentials. Good internet. Coffee. Quiet. Me ican Restaurant next door.
- Wesley (10/5): - This is a cozy motel that has all the basics, iron and ironing board, refrigerator, microwave oven, coffee maker, tv and cable, AC, desk, comfortable chair, pool, local newspaper, ice and a good restaurant near by (on the same property). It is really good for the price.
- Steven (10/5): Nostalgia PLUS Cleanliness! - Great, old-style roadside motel with very clean, updated materials including new floors in the bedroom and new tile and fixtures for the bathroom. Warm welcome set me up for a lovely, nostalgic, stay in an old-school setting, without the worn-out vibe of many older properties. A real treat…and economical, too.
- David (10/5): - The stay was amazing for the price point. A great launch pad for surrounding areas.
- Richard (8/5): - Very clean. Room small and not fancy but served well for an overnight stop. I will book a room there again if I travel there again.
- James (10/5): - Clean and confortable. Good value for the price.
- Toney (10/5): - Really retro but clean. Park 10’ from your bed. Homee feel. check in was with delightful Indian lady. Definitely not your chain motel. Surely deserved it’s 8.8 rating.
- Pascal (10/5): Good stay - Fully renovated motel, very clean, parking in interior court (very safe), good price, and have a restaurant onsite. thank you!
- Terese (8/5): - Nice, clean motel near Carrizo Plains National Monument. Very friendly staff. I would definitely recommend this motel for anyone planning to visit Carrizo Plain.
- Susie (10/5): - The property is very clean. Staff is accommodating and friendly. Will definitely stay again.
- Steve (8/5): - Great place to stay in terms of value. The owner was really nice during check-in and got us extra blankets when we requested them. A fantastic Mexican restaurant is next door so no need to find a place to eat- this is the place! My only gripe is that there was no soap provided in the bathroom. Most places have this and so I have come to expect it. Other than that I would stay here the next time I come to see the wildflower bloom.
- Nga (10/5): - Wonderful motel in Taft. Now I see why they scored 8.8 out of 10. Nice shower. Nice towels (not the cheap, thin, yucky Motel 6 towels). Comfortable bed. Owners clearly put a lot of effort into maintaining the place. Very nice. Bummer no breakfast provided though. Please note that the motel is in the back of the property. Drive through the parking lot past the Salsa restaurant. It can be a bit confusing first time finding it. (-;
- Joan (10/5): A Great Stay in Taft at Toppers Motel - Toppers Motel is definitely good value. It is very clean and the beds are comfortable. I like having a dining table in the room. There is everything needed for a comfortable stay. Amenities include refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker and flat screen TV. Staff is friendly and accommodating. La Salsa, the Mexican restaurant onsite is excellent. There is ample parking and it’s free. I visit several times a year for birdwatching trips and it provides great access to the Carrizo Plain, So. San Joaquin Valley and Pixley Wildlife refuge for viewing Sandhill Cranes.
- Duane (8/5): - Old school motel. Clean good Mexican restaurant located in same building.
- Omar (10/5): - Clean , safe and relaxing
- Maria (10/5): - Excellent place.
- Gabriela (10/5): - We were happily surprised, the property doesnt have an excellent curb appeal, but our room waa clean and comfortable enough.
They have a fridge, microwave and coffee maker. I waa very happy with our room.
- Donna (10/5): - The staff was friendly and helpful. Great place to stay!
- Stephany (10/5): - We were arriving late and called to let them know, the owner was friendly on the phone, kindly waited for us and made check-in process really fast and easy. Room was clean, beds were firm but still comfortable. Fridge, microwave, and hairdryer were provided. The only minor drawback was the AC stopped working and the room got a little too warm. Would stay here again if we ever go to the area.
- David (10/5): - Management is very friendly and accommodating. Safe and quiet. Family friendly.
- Erik (10/5): - A++++
- Lanisa (10/5): - Very friendly owner/operator. I wish the ice machine would've been working.
- Jocelyn (10/5): - Really friendly staff. Easy check in process and easy parking. Very clean room! We got a two bed and there was more than enough space. Definitely recommend. The main sign outside could use a little update but don't let that fool you.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Tissue box - A tissue box in the room would have been nice.
- Paul (10/5): - Retro motel off the beaten path, cheap but fairly clean, kind of fun.
- Joan (10/5): Topper Motel - a great place to stay! - This is a lovely motel! The manager was so warm and friendly upon arrival and whenever he saw us. I chose a room with 2 beds for myself and was so pleased with the size and layout. Loved the larger refrigerator and dining table. It was remodeled sometime in the last few years and nicely done! The bed was really comfortable and the room spotless. I will be staying there again for an upcoming trip and hope to make use of the swimming pool. The on-site Mexican restaurant is fantastic with great service. There was free parking for the motel in front of the rooms. We stayed in Taft to go birding in Carrizo and Pixley Wildlife Refuge and it was very convenient. Can’t wait for my next visit!
- Gil (8/5): - I recommnd this very friendly staff and very clean rooms.
- Matthew (10/5): Upgraded Classic - Great classic motel layout with upgraded bath facilities. I appreciate the tile floors. Great place to stay.
- Leannette (10/5): Just what i needed. - It has small neat rooms. I will stay hear again.
- Jenifer (2/5): - I am pretty sure every serial killer that has roamed California has stayed there at one point. It is listed as under Bakersfield but an hour drive away, completely in the middle of nowhere. The front desk complained to me after booking with Expedia that I should have called to verify they had rooms available. The room was disgusting, cockroaches. The bathroom was so small that you would have to contort your entire body just to get in the shower, not that I would put a toe in. The towels are so old they feel like sandpaper. The chair under the table (clearly bought at some old government auction) didn’t even fit. The table had to be raised to pull it out. The worst hotel I have ever stayed in,
- Kimberly (10/5): - The motel room was very cozy. The bed had one of the best mattresses I've ever felt in a hotel. The bathroom appeared recently redone and the shower had lots of warm water. The room included a microwave and fridge and is right next to a Mexican restaurant with good food. The parking was surrounded by the motel itself and made it feel isolated. A mild complaint is that I couldn't get a plug into one of the outlets so we were a little short on outlets. Overall a very good value for the money and I will be returning as it's a convenient stop between NorCal and SoCal.
- Catherine (10/5): A delightful place to stay in friendly Taft - This place is a wonderful find! The owners are friendly, welcoming, and attentive. (Housekeepers, too!) And their property is clean and nicely maintained.
I love the tile re-model they've done with the floors, shower, and bathroom walls... it gives a sweet upscale look and feel to the room! And along with the excellent newer A/C unit it helped my room feel comfortably cool in the hot Central CA summer. (No doubt the same wall unit heats just as well in chillier seasons.)
The swimming pool is on par with everything else - sparkly clean and inviting, with a BBQ and lots of seating on the pool-deck. In the August heat, delightfully refreshing to have a swim!
My memory foam bed was very comfortable, and Topper's is PEACEFUL and QUIET - I slept great!
Fridge & microwave in the room are a wonderful convenience while traveling, as well as the on-site guest laundry. The way the motel is situated around a central courtyard, with each room's door away from both traffic and the guests' parked vehicles, is really nice... adds to the overall peaceful vibe.😎
Totally a score among budget-priced lodgings!
I so appreciate having discovered Topper's Motel - an enthusiastic 2 thumbs up!!
- Verified traveler (6/5): - No cold water in any faucet
- Verified traveler (10/5): En route from Northern to Southern California - After a long drive, we were happy to find the office open for us. We found the room to be comfortable and clean.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Clean room and good price…………….
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great front desk service, clean rooms, nice restaurant 10 yards away, nice town!
- Brannon (10/5): - Good service, comfortable beds, & clean rooms! Thank you!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Toppers is an old motel and well known in Taft. Maybe it's even a landmark. The owners have remodeled the rooms and have done a very good job. The lighting in our room was better than any motel I have stayed in. The rooms are small but have everything you need. Shampoo and soap dispensers in your tiled shower. Timers on the light switches. Parking lot well lit. As with most motels, the air conditioner is noisy.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - It was clean and quiet, the staff were friendly and helpful.
- Jorge (6/5): - Still haven’t gotten back my $150 fee deposit from the hotel!?
- Steve (10/5): - Very clean. Everything in room was new. Will stay again.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The motel was well kept then well maintained and rooms are very clean. And I've been remodeled recently
- Verified traveler (6/5): - I didnt like the 150 deposit i didnt get back for a week but i love toppers!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Bed was great. Tile floors and bathroom and refrig very
Echo of trucks in parking courtyard noisy in am and pm as they enter and leave.
Tile floors and shower and bathroom very clean.
- Veryrested (10/5): Very nice and friendly. - Me and my family came out to visit some friends in Barstow. It had been about 7 years since we had been here last. It was late when we arrived and surprised at how much the town had changed. The biggest surprise was the motel we stayed at. I remembered it being a really bad area and was hesitant to stop there. Once we pulled up I was pleasantly surprised at the difference in what I remembered and what I was seeing. I talked with the owner and he told me that he had just bought it a yr or so ago. Really nice man. The rooms had all been remodeled and were very clean and reasonably priced. We stayed for almost a week and I had not one complaint. I am still amazed at the transformation. I would highly recommended that if anyone is needing a place to stay in Barstow to go talk to Jimmy the owner and he will make your stay good as well.
Thanks Jimmy.
- Mack184 (8/5): Very Surprised - I was very surprised, the old saying don't judge a book by its cover. The outside of the hotel looked old and weathered, but the room I was in was remodeled. The room had a min refrigerator, microwave, and coffee pot. A flat-screen TV on the wall. The check-in was easy and the hotel staff was very friendly. would definitely recommend. The price was very affordable.
- infoE2143UF (10/5): Six days of hard work and good rest in a clean room - As a general contractor with a crew when you agree to work on an out of town project finding the right place to rest your weary bones is important. Topper's Motel gave me and the crew everything we needed from excellent customer service to clean smelling rooms daily. The rooms always looked clean and smelled better than when we left them every night we returned. Sam Bhakta, the manager, treated us like family returning home when we came back after a long hard working day. The entire crew was more than satisfied with the Topper's Motel choice for this project, we highly recommend it.
- CarPilot (8/5): Modern and Clean Budget Lodging - Recently renovated, the room had ceramic tile floors, and the shower was fully tiled with sliding glass doors. The room is small but well laid out and furnished with queen bed, student desk and chair, a simple armchair, microwave and (new) fridge, and coffee maker. The motel is built around a courtyard for parking with one entrance and exit, increasing a sense of security. Everything was sparkling clean.
Air con was noisy, as it so often is, and we would have liked to open the window an inch or two but unfortunately it had been pinned completely closed. (In the morning we noticed we could have tried opening the small window in the shower.)
We would stay here again, and would love to find more places like it.
- 168deedeer (10/5): Great motel! - What a pleasant suprise in a little city! Very nice and clean! And the owners went out of there way to accommodate us!! We were traveling with the chopper bikes from Sweden! And the restraunt on the premeses was perfect!
- Pjveetwin (10/5): A perfect stay - Taft isn't exactly the hot spot for vacations, but it was the on the way, and finding the Topper hotel was a nice surprise! It's a very traditional upper scale Mexican style, tile and a rug, great shower, TV on the wall, and a great restaurant attached! Cars were very secure in a horseshoe style. We will definitely stay here again
- TerryF625 (10/5): Topper's can't be topped. - This is the place to say in Taft. Great hosts, the rooms are more than adequate and you are 30' from one of the best Mexican restaurants in town. In addition, they are remodeling the rooms and they are doing an outstanding job.
- SandraPortocarrero (6/5): Basic, friendly - Basic motel, close to the movie theater and a yummy mexican restaurant. Close to Chase bank too. The front desk lady is sweet, I think they are from India. The room had a strong smell, like Glade or something!? Bothered my eyes a bit...but for 45 bucks, it was ok! Clean...
- schaferpho (6/5): Basic, old-style motel - decent choice in a hard town, Good WIFI - We chose Toppers largely because of the Tripadvisor ratings, knowing that Taft did not have many good choices for our 2-night stay. Having said that, the hotel does not leave a good first impression: it is old and shabby on the outside, and desperately in need of a renovation. Our room was adequate - old blankets and cheap furnishings: just about as basic as you would want to go. The wifi signal was strong and fast, happily, so it was a good place to get work done. Frankly, I don't know why this place gets the top reviews for Taft - unless all the others are really dreadful.
- Bluejay42 (8/5): Perfect modest accommodations, clean and very quiet. - This motel is a sleeper in more ways than one. It is very plain but adjoins a fine authentic mexican restaurant and has a large swimming pool. The rooms are clean, large and the beds firm and comfortable. the management is very friendly in this tourist backwater of rural California.
- TeufelWolf (6/5): Fine place for a one night stay. - I've stayed here often as pit stop motel going between LA and SF.
Its a weird little motel that looks frozen in time. Like a set from some film noir movie.
Usually the least expensive of the motels in Taft. Unlike some cheap places it has never felt unsafe, it is just very basic motel in a very small town.
The rooms are small, good for two people. I late stayed there on 12/29/09 and the rooms where clean, bathroom was clean, and check-in was quick.
