Guest Reviews

- HUNG JU (1/5): - Can't imagine why the wifi and aircon are provid time limited, all the photo on the page are fake, it's really old and not clean, Ridiculous
- emon (4/5): - Very well located. The owners are nice persons. I could not leave my luggage at the reception the day of my checkout.
- YUYA (1/5): -
- Ngoc An (8/5): -
- Claude (7/5): -
- Feba (3/5): Dirty and smelly stay at a good location. - The location is good. Nearby to metro/train stations Cleanliness?? The shower area was grimy and dirty. There were a lot of cardboard boxes all along the stairs and the corridor. Considering Japan is so clean, almost everywhere you go, the dirty space feels jarring.
The water cooler did not work. The internet is only available until 1 AM, and it's really slow/terrible. I stayed for 11 nights, but had connectivity only for 4-5 nights, and it wasn't good. Also, they do not clean the garbage bins. For a couple of days, no handwash at all. The location is good, if only it were better maintained.
- Thomas (3/5): central and cheap but dirty and inconvenient - extremely good location, right where you want to be! the rooms were beautiful, albeit a little run down. Very good price though! The wifi was turned off from 1am until 3pm, not sure why but very frustrating, the service also stopped working several times. The single shower was incredibly dirty, on a level i have not seen before. The shower was also locked between 9.50am änd 3pm. The corridors where very cluttered with boxes.
- Melissa (1/5): You couldn’t pay me to stay here - Location that’s it Wifi and showers only for limited hours a day.
Beds were disgusting, full of pervious guests hair. Had menstrual blood stains all over. We bough blankets to sleep on. Room looked like it was never cleaned.
- hisanori (7/5): -
- Agnes (8/5): - The room is tidy snd clean! Comfy to sleep in. The shower was smelling strong from mold and there was a cockroach. I was there only two nights so I could avoid showers, but for a longer stay it’s really bad.
- kazunori (10/5): -
- Laura (5/5): - The bathroom was not clean
- Sabrina (8/5): Ryokan Hinomoto - Der Charm des Ryokans Hinomoto. Rezeption ist nicht dauerhaft besetzt.
- Arthur (4/5): - the accommodation is well located. WiFi and shower room only work at certain time of the day... so it's very inconvenient.
- Nuria (2/5): Aunque tu presupuesto sea ajustado, no vengas aqui!
- Giulia (1/5): Absolute eckelhaft!
- Creasey (4/5): - The room is very cosy, and reminiscent of japanese rooms I've stayed in the past, WIFI and AC work wrll when allowed to use them There's a restriction on WIFI and the shower, which can become quite problematic when there are lots of guests staying as everyone is fighting for the shower at night. Also you have to ask for the WIFI it is not provided within the rooms, and some days they turn it off all together.
- Fernando (2/5): - La ubicación El lugar no está tan cuidado, no volvería.
- Rehman (5/5): Passable - The location was good to explore the area and after that you can easily come to a hotel and there is no need to cover much distance to go famous places.A traditional style with less money. The facilities and the room were not good enough according to money. Even the worst smell made me anxious, and amenities, especially no comfortability of bed, no extra service and poor wifi.
- Frank (1/5): Bad - Booked a room for two guest, had to pay for the second guest again and charged twice
- Giovanni (3/5): A poorly maintained room with uncomfortable beds and a musty smell — not worth the price. - Only the location is good. Forget the rest For the price, the rooms are really below standard. The mattress was extremely thin and uncomfortable, the towels were old and worn out, and there was a musty smell in the room. One of the beds had the mattress simply folded over an opened frame – it looked like a temporary fix rather than a proper bed. There was no information provided about the Wi-Fi, and while the room wasn’t dirty per se, the overall impression was one of poor maintenance and minimal care. I wouldn’t recommend staying here unless it’s an emergency and you have no other option.
- Christel (8/5): Very good -
- Susan (1/5): One of the worst experiences of my long-standing use of Booking.com. It ruined my penultimate night - Nothing - I never got to stay there - he left me standing in the street.I had to find alternative accommodation at 8.15 pm! Everything- this is a complete fraud. It’s definitely not a Ryokan - it’s a small one-up/one down tiny house in a narrow alley. When I eventually got him on the phone after 5 attempts,, standing outside, he told me the booking had been cancelled by Booking.com and THEN claimed (and received!) full price on my credit card as a “no-show”. Booking’s Customer Service won’t help me - they facilitate this! Beware - and don’t get involved. It’s been an appalling experience that I would never have believed possible.
- Jennifer (1/5): Bad - The bathroom was a mess there was pubic hair everywhere and when I went to have a shower it started to flood because there was so much build up in the drain I had to unclog it myself. I also booked for two beds and was told not to touch one of them when I paid good money to be there.
- Md (4/5): Disappointing - Room was not clean
Especially the bathroom
It still had hair around the toilet and it looked like from multiple people
- Aidan (5/5): Passable -
- Sally (5/5): This place could be really nice if they tidied and cleaned regularly. location great. - the room itself is what i needed. I wanted a cheap private room. It had real windows, new solid wood door. i like tatami and futons. The room was not clean. its dusty. There were black hairs on my sheets, do they get washed!?. The shower room was mouldy, and it really wouldnt even be hard to clean! it just needs a basic effort. The shared sink and toilets seemed new and clean enough. It would be simple to tidy up all the boxes in the halls as well, it would make a difference.
- Henry (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mike (1/5): There is no hot water and no heating between 10 AM and 3 PM. There is no internet throughout the day - The property is clean and located relatively central to the Nishiki Market and Kyoto St. There is no hot water and no heating between 10 AM and 3 PM. There is no internet between 1 AM(!) and 3 PM. This information is not provided anywhere. When I left the army, I thought I had had my life's last shower in cold water in an unheated room in winter. There are much better options in Kyoto at the same price.
- Ferdi (4/5): Disappointing - My room didn't look at all like the photos small terrible hospital bed and room. The staff was very nice though
- Evgenia (6/5): Pleasant - The stuff was not helpful. They hardly agreed to let leave a small piece of luggage before check-in time.
- Rory (6/5): Pleasant -
- Corazon (1/5): Bad experience. The staff was collecting more money from me and I have to pay him cash - Just near shopping centers Facility
- Constantin (8/5): Very good -
- Ádám (8/5): Very good -
- Imri (6/5): Pleasant -
- David (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jakub (6/5): Pleasant - Localisation is great. Rooms are also nice. Bathroom was not clean enough.
- Hanieh (7/5): Good -
- Jennifer (4/5): Pictures show better that what it actually is. - Location, the experience of staying in a ryokan is ok Halls were full of boxes, is difficult to walk through it.
Place is not very clean. Is dark.
Staff is almost never in the reception. Cero English, so is difficult to ask questions.
- Max (4/5): It worked but was not the best - It’s location. It was hard to check in, there was a random 200 yen tax I didn’t know about that I had to pay and then shower room was not clean. Also there was a fair amount of hair everywhere, the place needs a serious once over with a mop.
- Sandra (9/5): Superb - Even though the ryokan was just next to the big streets, the area was really calm and there was no noise from the outside, so it's a good place to go when you don't want to be far from shopping areas and museums while still getting to sleep peacefully. Futons were comfortable to sleep on and the owners are really nice :D
- Max (8/5): Very good -
- Elizabeth (8/5): Lovely traditional Japanese ryokan! - The property is a great stay if you are looking for a traditional Japanese ryokan. Room was cleaned every few days and it is in an amazing location. There is a lack of lights at this property? Often I found it difficult when coming in during the evening; although there are sensor lights, there aren’t enough of them and it’s very dark when using the bathroom facilities. Also one shower for the entire hotel is quite difficult
- Zachary (7/5): Low quality lodging but in a great area but has a really good aesthetic to it - Property was located in a very nice spot and had a very nice traditional japanese style which made the visit very cool So it wasn’t dirty but so dusty dust all under the bed and in the bathroom vents are caked in dust had to wipe it with a towel.
- Narelle (3/5): Poor -
- Aubrey (1/5): Terrible experience - I liked the location and that's it Horrible experience. When I got there, there was public hair on the sink and on the shower floor. Not sure why they couldn't clean that up. The towel they provided me was the size of face towel and really thin material. Not sure why they expected me to dry myself with a face towel. When I got there, the shampoo and body soap were pretty much already empty (3 washes max, I was there for 5 nights). When I asked for a bigger towel and to refill shampoo and soap, they hesitated, and when they did it was very very minimal also, it still was not enough for the remaining of my stay. They did not refill the toilet paper once even when it finished. I had to source my own toilet paper. They kept coming into my room for "cleaning" but there was nothing cleaned? And i wasnt allowed inside the room while they were doing this. Rubbish bins were still full and nothing was refilled. All they did when they came into my room for "cleaning" was open my windows even though it was cold outside. Not sure what they were actually cleaning? And they would keep unplugging the mini fridge even though I had drinks inside it. Not sure why they provide a mini fridge if they keep unplugging it? There was no WiFi and no hair dryer. The hot water wasn't hot enough. Also, they turn off hot water and heating and do not turn this back on until 3pm. I was not aware of this. It was pouring raining and freezing cold, so I thought I'll come into the hotel. But no, they turned off all the heating for the room and hot water and got upset with me when I asked if I can use the hot water and Heater as I was freezing cold. Also from the room you can hear a lot of noises with footsteps and taking. Bed was very uncomfortable and the tissue they provided me felt like sand paper to the nose. I guess they couldnt afford soft tissues. Anyway, I highly recommend not booking this hotel, you'll have a terrible experience.
- Nathan (9/5): Would stay here again - Location is great. Staff was nice My one and only complaint was the pillow was rock hard
- Jasmin (6/5): A little too expensive but nice owner and spacious rooms - Very nice owner and a spacious room with functioning heating in a good location. We arrived a little early for checkin and was welcomed in anyways. I mistakenly ordered a room for 1 person even though we were 2 and the owner was kind to fix that on the spot. My husband couldn’t sleep in the hard beds and his neck was hurting the two days. A matter of taste for how you like to sleep. A little expensive for what you get.
- Mike (7/5): Good -
- Daniel (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mathieu (1/5): Never again - The location and courtesy of the people who welcomed me. The room was not clean.
Wifi was available but only at certain times.
The air conditioning stopped one morning without me being able to turn it back on, when I looked for help to fix it there was no one.
When I left, I locked the bedroom door because all my work stuff, including my computer and identity papers, were inside. When I came back, the room had been cleaned but the door was ajar and not locked at all... It's a good thing we're in Japan.
And the absolute horror that made me hesitate to leave immediately after that: as I started to take the shower (in the only shower in the complex), I noticed to my amazement that there was excrement in it...
I only stayed because it would have ruined my trip to have to change everything. I only stayed 2 nights and I'm not about to come back.
- Remo (5/5): Passable -
- Kevin (9/5): Superb - Good location and good price No AC in the communal space but good AC inside the room.
- Stav (6/5): Pleasant -
- Katarzyna (7/5): Good -
- Karen (8/5): Cozy and clean ryokan. Great location. Great value for money. - Overall, a cozy and clean ryokan. Great location. Great value for money. Some language barriers. However, it was not a problem. At one occasion, the front door was locked when we returned to the ryokan during the day (approx. 13 o'clock). This was unfortunate as we were not able to enter our room.
- Eugénie (10/5): Nice owner, nice place, would book again! - It is super central and affordable. The space was comfortable. The beds are futons mattrasses on a stretch bed which is for Westeners not very comfortable.
- Martina (7/5): once okey - ryokan style extra cost and noisy
- Darryl (4/5): weird atmosphere, intrusive owners. not the cleanest place around and the door was locked in the afternoon which meant I - good location. weird atmosphere, intrusive owners. not the cleanest place around and the door was locked in the afternoon which meant I couldn't get inside!
- Flygmasjien (8/5): Very good -
(9/5): Superb -
- Jarunwit (7/5): Good -
- eirekay (4/5): Great location but sketchy Ryokan - Start with the good: location is on two bus lines, walkable to the river and Giaon District, there is a 7/11 on the corner (breakfast), and a laundry mat across the street. In short, it's convenient.
We arrived but the owner wasn't expecting us and our room wasn't ready. The shock here is that there were no other guests, but we waited as he prepared. The shared show is on the first floor, narrow, crowded and uncomfortable. The owner unplugs the power to the two toilets on the second floor, so you have to remember to plug it back in in order to flush. The sinks are open in the hallway so there is no privacy for washing up. The room itself was sparse - two mats, linens, THIN towels.
The most remarkable thing is that while the rooms themselves have AC, the owner does not run AC on the 2nd floor. We were there during 90 degree weather and every time we came out of the room, I felt like I was leaving a Vegas casino in mid-summer! You were just smacked with stifling heat as you left your room.
There is no lobby. And really no comfortable way to take shoes on and off - nothing to sit on or rest against. We stayed in Ryokans our entire trip and this was the only one that disappointed.
- harrie_v (4/5): disappointment - Get this first: mostly, if I didn't like a place, I don't bother to comment. Times are hard enough and maybe they had a bad day. We've staid in ryokans before, always had a good experience. But this was absolutely not to be recommended. The place just was not clean and the toilet was terrible, with colored marks left on the rim and accumulated dust on the floor edges. The staircase to go upstairs was a disaster to navigate and the hall was cluttered. The WiFi was completely worthless. It took us over twenty minutes just to check in. Stay away until they clean up their act.
- Domoniku (2/5): entrance to hell - Don't sell your soul to go to this place.
Would give it a minus number, as soon as we arrived the reception was so cold as dusty was like entering a car boots sale dead stock garage.
We went to another hotel across the street paid slightly more but worth the investment.
- garyosbaldeston (4/5): good for one night, quite an experiance, bizarre - I found the this place very strange, although very well priced for the centre of Kyoto,it did not take me long to see why,the place is really nothing more than an old cramped and cluttered Kyoto hous up a back street that I was lucky to find as its not very well marked on street maps.i found to place to be a little on the dirty side and I did not like the strange intrusions by the landlady, who kept coming to the room checking the door.thankfully I had locked the room and she could not get in but it was disturbing none the less.the tv was coin operated and it was surrounded by dust, the futon had stains on it.it was very hot and humid in july.its was so clutted that it would be a major fire hazard.
regrettably I can not find a good word to say about it,it maybe ok for those who live there but it should not be open to guests. Not a place I would recommend nor would I ever want to stay there again,if I had two words to describe it they would be strange and disgusting.never again.
- KayH935 (4/5): Bizarre experience - and not a real ryokan - This hotel would be better described as rooms in the Japanese style: we booked to stay one night here, expecting it to be a ryokan, but in fact, there was no evening meal available, and when we asked about the bath, we were told firmly that it was preferred we would not use it - and if we wished to, it could only be at a certain hour and only if convenient: needless to say, we didn't bother!
The location is fine, and the neighbourhood is quite quiet: but that's about the end of the positive, I fear. Price is worked out per person, rather than per room, so we ended up paying around £85 for three people. Our room was fine, though rather idiosyncratic in terms of decoration: it was also boiling hot, despite two fans being provided. We were there at the start of June, when it was still very mild weather, so I dread to think what it would be like in July or August. The shower is down a steep flight of steps, on the ground floor, has no light inside and is one of those where you have to keep pressing the button for bursts of water: rather like in a public swimming bath.
I arrived back to the hotel before the rest of my family, being unwell, and elected to take a shower. The landlady stood outside the whole time, which was rather strange, but perhaps she wanted to make sure I wasn't using up all the hotel water. After I had gone up to bed, she keep coming in to my room, though I wasn't sure what she wanted, as I don't speak Japanese: the first time, she turned the light off, and the second time, about ten minutes later, seemed to be about turning the fan off, but I flatly refused with hand signals. By the time the rest of my family came back, they were told the showers were "finished", so they couldn't wash away the grime of the day - the sinks are public outside the toilets, so it wasn't really appropriate to take a sponge bath either as there were other guests.
The futons were comfortable, though the room was hot as Hades, but the highlight had to be the entry of the landlady at 3am, "to check we were OK". My (Japanese-fluent) brother reassured her, but after the Gestapo light of the corridor hitting us all in the face, getting back to sleep was a challenge. We had an early morning because of the heat, when we discovered that my mother (who had taken one look at the room and popped a sleeping pill) was covered in bites - they weren't mosquitos, bed bugs or fleas: but whatever they were, they were itchy and took several weeks to clear up.
If I had reason to be in Kyoto on a small budget for a number of days, I might take a room here on the grounds that it's cheap and spacious for one. Otherwise, I can't recommend it, I fear. I will say, though, that the landlord was very pleasant in contrast to others' reports (though we did have a fluent Japanese speaker with us, and his English wasn't very good - and why should it be, after all. seeing that he's Japanese and living in Japan?) and perhaps this is the language issue. The landlady was also pleasant, if rather unusual, and it has certainly provided entertaining fodder for travellers' tales. This isn't quite enough to make me recommend it wholeheartedly, however.
- Clarkini30 (4/5): Don't stay in this depressing place- cheap shouldn't mean dirty! - Booked here for 3 nights after coming to the end of 4 weeks of travelling.
As it was recommended in Lonely Planet Japan I figured it would be a fail safe option...
I appreciate that you get what you pay for and this place was under £30 a night- so I didn't expect much. The only thing I do expect from anywhere is for the place to be clean- this is not.
The toilet smells vile and the place generally needs a good scrub and an airing.
I wasn't shown where the shower was so can't comment on that, but given the state of the loo I drew my own conclusion.
The location is great, but that's it. I stayed one night and left to go to the sun route across the road- albeit more expensive i think it was worth it. Great beds, great location, clean, cafe and and restaurant which looked to be good value and coin operated laundry.
- Paulojono (2/5): Grubby little dump run by a rude jerk - This is one of the most disappointing hotels I have ever stayed in . The Man who runs it is two faced jerk . He is unhelpful , rude - I doubt this forum allows the word I like to use to describe him ( rhymes with TANKER and HUNT)
On arrival he was very courteous as i was accompanied by a japanese friend - However once she was gone he was rude and dismissive .
The room was very dusty and grubby and needed a thorough clean .
Heating was by a smelly paraffin stove which totally fumed me out and left me feeling sick and with a nasty fever .
I booked for 4 nights and stayed only 2 - leaving for a much better hotel . And he would not refund me for the 2 unused nights .
My whole trip to japan has otherwise been filled with kindness , politeness and generosity - the contrast to this nasty little man and his grubby little dump is stark .
I only booked there as it was the last room available at the $100 per night rate . I'd say to anyone pay a bit more and have a decent stay .
Cheap and cheerful...NOT!!! Cheap and Crappy ...YES!!!
the only person I'd recommend this place to would be someone I hated and never wanted to see again in my life
- sletmos (2/5): Stinky and dirty. Horrible staff with serious issues. - Horrible in most aspects, plain bad in some. The place smells like moldy pee, and not even Wi-fi is available. Nor is toilet paper. However, we didn't get bitten by any bugs and there were some hot water in the shower, that is a bonus.
- MJAG_12 (2/5): Sleeping in a pigsty - Do not ever make reservations for this ryocan. You enter through a sort of garage full of junk, access to the rooms is by a steep staircase and rooms are dusty. Air conditioning is manipulated so that only works at idle. In the hallway leading to the only bathroom that allows the owner to use the urine smell is unbearable because they are very dirty. At the reception there is never anyone.
- Plannie (4/5): Bedbugs - Please be aware that this hotel was infested with bedbugs when we where there. I am now back home facing the consequences of 3 nights in the Ryokan Hinomoto. Hopefully the old lady will notice it and start cleaning the place thoroughly.
- Pitiboy (4/5): Well, not the best Ryokan in Japan-for sure..... - We recently visited this Ryokan and feel dissapointed. First of all the booking was horrible. (an old lady is managing the ryokan). We had no confirmation, ro reply and had to use our Japanese friend for help. Rooms are used, need renovation and it is rather the place for those who pay no attention to something more than a place to sleep.
Belive me you can find so many nice ryokans in Kyoto with much better standard.
Too far from places of interest in Kyoto and far from the railway station.
- pinkfairywand (6/5): Pretty okay! - The Hinomoto Ryokan was a little harder to find than the other one we stayed in, but on the plus side we got to see a lady walking her cat on a leash while going down the residential alley to find it! It was very cute.
The rooms were clean and the staff was nice. They also held our luggage because we showed up before check-in and it was already up in our rooms when we showed back up later. I believe this is customary as the Hiraiwa Ryokan also did this for us.
The room came with a coin-operated TV that lasted a fairly long time, a low table with cushions to sit on, a thermal hot water pitcher, green tea bags, a tea pot with cups, and of course futons and yukata. In addition we were provided with tiny toothbrushes and tiny (TINY) single-use toothpaste tubes. (I kept mine because it was so cute and small.) There were decorations befitting the price range of the inn, and shoji-screens over the window for decoration and privacy (and to hide the lack of a view outside our window).
Also, the ryokan was VERY obviously someone's home. We weren't sure if the bathroom we found was OUR bathroom or a private bathroom, and we stumbled into the family's laundry room on accident. It was kind of awkward being paranoid about intruding on their privacy all the time, but they were very nice about it.
The shared toilet was very clean. The shared bathroom (no toilet as is customary) was also clean but we missed out on "hot bath time."
Overall it was a nice stay although there are more private experiences at about the same value if you look around.
Nonetheless this was a quaint place if you're on a budget, and gives you a much better look into a normal Japanese daily life than some other hotels or inns.
