• Sasha Tomic (10/5): - We had a wonderful time at Budha House. The accommodation is prepared with great care and attention to detail. It is as living in part home, part café, part museum. The owner thought really of everything and left many things for us to use, including bicycles.

• Jodie (10/5): The perfect place in Kyoto for our group - This property was perfect for our group of 6. It was awesome having 2 toilets and bikes to explore Kyoto. It’s also right near a bus stop for easy access around Kyoto. One of the rooms was traditional and the other two had western bedding. The main room had a very comfortable bed. We also loved having washing facilities. The downstairs room was pretty cool with books and spots to sit and relax. We were also greeted at the apartment, which was a lovely touch. Although the steps are very steep, we worked with the younger members of the party to cart luggage. If you have mobility issues or find stairs that are steep to be an issue, this would not be suitable to stay at. Thank you for having us. We loved our stay here!

The beds were so comfortable and the washer dryer was an absolute bonus. The host was always quick to respond and was very kind and considerate when our daughter was ill. Would definitely stay again. It is not a new building, but all was clean and in good condition. We loved it, especially the "relax room" downstairs! Good airconditioning and kitchen facilities!

Abbiamo soggiornato in quattro, di cui due bimbe, e c'era addirittura una camera da letto in più che non abbiamo usato. Pulizia eccellente, proprietario molto disponibile e facilmente raggiungibile. Abbiamo apprezzato molto i libri messi a disposizione, anche per i più piccoli. L'apertura della porta principale é un po' scomoda. La posizione é a 15 minuti a piedi dalla stazione, nelle vicinanze ci sono pochi ristoranti la sera, bisogna spostarsi in bus verso il centro.

• Samantha (10/5): Perfect place to stay in Kyoto - The Buddha House was lovely! Three levels with three bedrooms, perfect for our family of 4, but could serve 6. It had all the amenities you could need. While we didn't cook, there are utensils, pots, pans, a rice cooker and more. Toiletries and other essentials are provided as well. The pocket wifi was so handy and the owner has left clear instructions for everything as well as directions to a few grocery, drug, convenience and restaurants. The stairs are a bit steep but we got used to it pretty quickly. The location is also fantastic, close to Kyoto station but not so close you're in the hustle and bustle. There are several bus stops near by as well. I'd highly recommend Buddha House and would stay again when we visit next time!

Very cleare messages about transportation, rules, how things work in the house (washing machine etc). When we accidentely ran in to trubble twice our host very quickley answerd our mail and did his best to help us. Outstanding host, even though we never met him. You have to be able to handle steep stairs. We didn’t have any problems with it, but it’s good to know in advance.

As others have mentioned, the stairs are steep. The host was very helpful in recommending a doctor when we got sick. The bottom floor looks like it was once a restaurant or tea shop? Not quite usable or integrated into the house.

• Glenn (10/5): Buddha House is our Home to go to in Kyoto I. - We travel extensively around the World and rarely stay in properties more than once. Buddha House in Kyoto is one of the few whose layout, interior appointments (Great Buddhist Figures and other decorations give unique personality to Buddha House) and location is well worth returning to over the years, as Tanaka-san goes out if the way to make our stays relaxing, and most importantly warmly comfortable for his guests. This last point cannot be overstated as most property owners I Japan provide the shell of the place, but ignore that Hospitality should just be that... Hospitable! Tanaka-san is very attentive to guests needs and attends to reasonable requests in short order. We find returning here is like returning to home in Kyoto. It's location in a very quiet neighborhood, facing across to a large stand of Bamboo trees of Shoseien Garden across the street could not be more beautiful and the river or the Higashi Hongan-ji Temple a few blocks away makes it so nice. Access is excellent, with Busses on Kawaramachi taking you to Shijo or Sanjo Karwaramachi retail or Kyoto Station with ease. Even one of 3 busses, #206, takes you way across town diagonally to Kinkakuji/ in one go... Buddha House is our home when in Kyoto... I'd say that if all 3 bedrooms were occupied by 6-8 adults, then the living room area would not be adequately comfortable for such a crowd, but for 2-3 it is great.
• Frederick (10/5): Exceptional - The house was clean and equipped to handle a family/group of people. All facilities within was great and easy to use. The host gave very detailed instructions on the use of each equipment and the do’s and don’t’s of them. Check in and out was smooth and seamless. The location was perfect for a house close to all locations around the city. We all were very pleased with the house and when we return to Kyoto, this will be our place of choice.
• Jackie (10/5): Great stay at the Buddha House - Excellent location and a very comfortable house over three levels. It was lovely to have our own tea and toast in the mornings :) Great value. Great neighborhood easy to taxi from. Highly recommend. The fourth attic bedroom is only available for groups of 7 or more. As a group of four female friends, we were hoping to have a bedroom each :( The stairs are steep they were fine for us but if you had sore hips or knees you may be better to stay somewhere with a lift.
• Cornelia (8/5): A great cultural experience, but not for people with knee issues. - Staying in a Japanese house opposed to a hotel. Location was excellent. Kind and responsive host. AND there was a second toilet on ground floor, which we did not see in the description of the house and was my big concern as a family of 5 adults getting ready to leave in the mornings. I have to say the steep staircase, especially at night needing the toilet! The bedrooms did not have space to put out clothes, hooks on the walls or doors would be helpful. Personally I found it hard to always get in and out of bed through the end of bed in the twin room, no space between beds and beds were pushed against the walls. The bicycles unfortunately were too low for us for comfortable cycling and the law having to use few and specific payable parking lots made cycling rather inconvenient. (This of course is not the hosts fault, but Kyoto law).

• Lee (10/5): kyoto buda house stay - house very clean ,in a good location ,owner very nice and all communication was easy ,we had stayed there before so new what to expect, you can use the bikes for free which there I think is 6 in total.the price of the accommodation is good value ,it's quite close to the train station so no need for a taxi. the only thing I could fault is the seating arrangements, the sofa only seats 2 people and isn't comfortable.

The Buddha House was as advertised and as described in other comments (stairs are narrow and steep, and you must climb one flight to the kitchen/bathroom level and another flight to the bedroom level). Beds were very comfortable. Host provided wonderful communications throughout our stay.

Great location, halfway between main train station and the main shopping area with plenty of restaurants and supermarket within walking distance. Great location for group of family or friends. Did not meet host but was available to ask anything if we needed to via email. Even dropped the price a little when one of our friends had to go home early from Japan before we arrived in Kyoto. Would definitely stay here again if we are ever back in Kyoto. The house had 4 floors with quite steep, narrow stairs. Is not a problem unless you have mobility issues.

We also really enjoyed being able to use the bicycles during our stay. Our host was very helpful and provided a number of suggestions of things to do and see. Nothing, it was all wonderful. Please note, though, that the stairs are VERY steep, and the bedrooms are two flights up, so might not be suitable for people with mobility issues or travelling with small children.

I would definitely recommend this place. The bedrooms are tiny. 3rd floor designed for 3 tiny rooms, i would suggest to change it to 2 room would be perfect. And will be much better if the host can provide us with instructions where to go, best place to eat nearby…

It is 10 mins walking distance to the train station , but may take longer with cases and hot weather. The property is over 3 floors, ground floor with space to chill, second floor tv and kitchen, 3rd floor 3 bedrooms. It was 1st property with 5 people where we had plenty of space. Lovely, quirky place to explore Kyoto

• Hoang (10/5): Exceptional - This house is perfect for our family of 5 as it has 3 bedrooms. Everything in this house is in excellent condition. The owner really spent time to anticipate the guests' needs and well prepared for it. I don't recall that it lacks anything I needed for my stay there. Very well prepared.... The location is also central to Kyoto and close to Kyoto station I would highly recommend this house for your stay in Kyoto. The route from Kyoto station to this Buddha House is very easy. Yet, the instruction is more complicated than should be. I would recommend to revise the instruction to make it clearer. There are at least 3 routes to this house: 2 routes by foot and 1 route by bus number 205.

• Sherry (9/5): Great central location, very economical, clean and with a friendly host - The house is centrally located, walking distance to the Kyoto train station, the river and many tourist attractions in Kyoto. The host was very friendly and offered to help us book diner reservations. It has 3 bedrooms on the 3rd floor and comfortably fit our party of 6. We stayed during the peak cherry blossom season and the price could not be beaten. The second floor kitchen/living room area was great for our family to gather and have meals purchased from Family Mart or 7-11. It was fine for us, but the stairs are narrow and may not be suitable for senior citizens. There are two bathrooms, but one of them is at the first floor, which is not very convenient to get to.

The gardens across the road are worth popping in if you have time, they were illuminated at night while we were there. The house was cosy with everything you needed and extremely comfortable beds! We enjoyed using the bikes to ride around Kyoto. It wasn’t a problem for us but the inside stairs are fairly narrow and steep so just to note that. So much to see in Kyoto, we will be back, and would definitely stay at Buddha house again! nothing

• Rocky (9/5): Excellent "home away from home" in the heart of Kyoto - The location of Buddha House is excellent: a 10-15 minute walk from Kyoto Station and lots of transport options nearby, making it easy to get to key sightseeing destinations. There are also plenty of great dining options within walking distance. The owner is extremely accommodating and very responsive to our needs. We stayed here with our 1 year old and found the facilities to be everything we needed. Its hard to fault this property. The only things that could have made it better were if a children's seat were available for any of the bikes downstairs (though the owner was very responsive and would most likely have accommodated us had we asked). The staircases are very steep and would not suit travellers with heavy bags or those with accessibility needs.

• Glenn (10/5): Comfort, Space and Serenity.... - We like the fact that Buddha House was far more pleasing place than the photos provided online seemed. At one point, we almost supplanted it with another place; but, are truly happy we did not as it revealed itself to be a place which became more comforting and livable the longer we stayed here. Even the beds alone were some of the best of any place we've stayed antwhere; and, to active travellers like us, it is significant and appreciated. And, tell me, when was th e last time your accommodation had its own privated Coffee house/Library on its ground floor? Next trip to Japan, we plan to stay multiple weeks at Buddha House and know from staying in Kyoto multiple other times in different places that Mr.Tanaka and his son will provide their gracious Hospitality once again at a very high level. What we disliked most was leaving Buddha House and Kyoto in general!. We also were sorry we did not get to use their bikes as much as we wanted to, as it's such a great way to see Kyoto at a proper pace. We too don't like that we must miss our great breakfasts looking out at the beautiful wall of tall Bamboo of Shoen-ji Gsrdens across the street which filled our windows with its natural texture and our ears with music from the songbirds which populated it....a true, serene respite from the bustling city that is Kyoto..
