Guest Reviews
- Selja (10/5): Kuin retki menneisyyteen.
- Steven (10/5): - Tiny guesthouse, only three rooms. Very lovely and the host was so kind.
- Victoria (10/5): -
- Herve (9/5): A perfect opportunity to experience Japanese culture in a remarkable setting. - The ryokan is set in an old traditional house fully renovated with all the modern comfort as well as an authentic feel helped by an exquisite decoration. The apartment is big yet intimate, opening on a private, carefully designed Japanese garden. Everything is impeccable and serene. The breakfast is cooked on site and is a perfect taste of Japanese cuisine. The ryokan is off the beaten track and provides the opportunity to get closer to real life in Kyoto in a calm and safe neighborhood, but it is a bit isolated and opportunities for dinner on a Sunday night are quite limited.
- Christine (9/5): Classic. Clean. - Clean. Quiet. Owner was friendly and helpful. Mattress was very hard. It would be helpful to have better lighting over the sink for makeup. Mirrors are hung for shorter people.
- Jennifer (10/5): The bedding was more comfortable than expected-we had down comforters that were cozy and not too hot. They even loaned u - The property was artistically designed and decorated. It has a calming feeling and the scent of natural wood. It was surprisingly quiet. I felt like I was in a library or art gallery sometimes. Nothing I did not like
- Niel (8/5): Great stay and very welcoming - Breakfast lovely
- Niel (10/5): -
- Charilaos (7/5): Quiet and well kept, though the location and lack of cultural experience were disappointing. - Ryokan Tanoya offered a very pleasant and peaceful stay. The ryokan is small and intimate, which added to its charm, and it was exceptionally clean throughout. The atmosphere was calm and quiet, The main drawback was the location, as it was very remote with seemingly little to do in the immediate area. Had I realised quite how isolated it was, I may have reconsidered booking. Dining options nearby were limited, with only a small number of restaurants available. Additionally, as this was my first ryokan experience, I had expected more of a traditional Japanese element; however, it felt more like standard accommodation rather than a distinctly cultural experience.

- Sarah (10/5): Beautiful authentic stay and experience! - Beautiful space and very kind staff. It’s a little outside the main part of the city but easy transit options nearby. Very clean and well maintained!
- Conor Connolly (10/5): -
- Brian (10/5): It was a perfect introduction to Japan. - Breakfast was worth every yen. The woman who runs the ryokan is wonderful.
- Irina (10/5): Great memory about Kyoto - For sure is a best our experience not only in Kyoto but general travel by Japan in terms of accomodation. I was oriented by feedbacks of the guests and choosed exactly a large room with a private garden view. WOW! Inside and outside everything were perfect. Large space, separate areas for sleeping and rest, comfortable futons and blankets, plenty of bathroom amenities, clean. And of course, the unforgettable authentic atmosphere of the ryokan. I hope a photos will be loaded and you could feel it too Location is a little bit far, but you can get place directly by bus #50 (stop Omiya-Nakadachiuri). Keep in mide you have to pay 1000 yens city tax on place, but this is regulated by local law (tax depences from cost of accomadation) and Tanoya can not influence on it

- Zach (10/5): -
- Alfonso (10/5): - Es un lugar cálido, como si estuviera en casa
- Maude (10/5): The ryokan is lovely. Hisayo made us a delicious breakfast and helped us book a boat trip. - It’s a beautiful quiet home in a walkable area near services and bus lines
- Michele (10/5): Perfect. If back to Kyoto, I will be stay there again - Ryokan Tanoya is a charming place to stay. Everything is perfect and clean. A real throwback to the historical Japanese way to live.

- Carolin (10/5): - Wunderschönes, romantisches, authentisches 100 jähriges japanisches Haus. Grosszügiges Zimmer im Erdgeschoss mit Blick auf Zen-Garten. Modernes Badezimmer.

Nichts
- Martin (9/5): Lovely Ryokan - The staff was very nice and everything was as described.
The Ryokan is very cool. It is quite far from the next Station 10min to Subway and 8 min to the busstop
- Avocato (10/5): -
- Guillermo (10/5): -
- Pedro (9/5): Elegancia y tradición. - Limpieza, tranquilidad, amabilidad.
- Joshua (9/5): -
- Claire (10/5): The best traditional - The perfect balance between a traditional experience with modern comforts, a beautiful garden topped it all off!
- Jeffrey (9/5): Lovely, peaceful ryokan with great vegan breakfasts! - The ladies who run the property are lovely and very helpful. The shojin ryori (vegan) breakfasts were outstanding - so colourful and delicious! The accommodation and grounds are extremely peaceful, as you would expect of a ryokan. The room we had was a bit small compared to other accommodations we had during our three weeks in Japan. The location is a bit far away from public transport, but taxis (we used the Go Taxi app) were readily available and reasonably priced.
- Jeremy (10/5): - I loved how authentic the experience felt and looked, curated by such amazing and sweet souls.
- Greta (10/5): Exceptional - Exceptional, traditional Japanese home
- Angelica (8/5): Very good -
- Nlung (10/5): Zen and traditional ryokan experience - Spacious and a very well-kept 100-year-old ryokan, yet with a modern toilet and bathroom. Bathroom facing your very own garden is amazing - loved the zen vibe!
- Allison (10/5): - the inn was an amazing way to add a quiet authenticity to our visit to kyoto. so peaceful. the architecture and artifacts of the building’s history continued to amaze over our 4 night stay. Ms Tano’s breakfast was one of the best meals of our trip!
- Michelsen (10/5): Exceptional -
- Matthew (10/5): Exceptional - A truly extraordinary small inn. A beautiful stay.
- Andrew (8/5): Very good - Wonderful traditional house and housekeeper is lovely. They organised breakfast, tea ceremony and luggage shipping all at short notice Shower room is wonderful but is down stairs, unlike other ryokans traditional lounge/nightwear is not provided.
- Gina (10/5): Exceptional -
- Luke (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tanya (10/5): Peaceful - Great place to stay. The owner was very kind. This place has a lovely homey feel.
- Thea (10/5): Authentic Japanese experience - Very authentic japanese place with a tatami room with all the Japanese decor. Lovely breakfast
- Anne (10/5): Exceptional - Friendly landlady. Clean and confortable room.
Very quiet Not very close to public transport
- Daniel (10/5): Exceptional -
- Hamzah (10/5): Exceptional -
- Corinne (10/5): A very inspiring stay in an authentic Kyoto Ryokan - Outstanding Ryokan experience with its charm, authenticity and meditative environment. The lady welcoming the guests has been very helpful to make the stay a delight. Japanese breakfast is exceptional and sophisticated.
- Ahmed (10/5): Exceptional -
- Bailey (7/5): Kind owner and Well-kept Ryokan - The owner is very nice and explained everything to us as check in. I enjoyed the garden outside my room. The building is a bit old but very clean and well-kept. I had booked this property expecting a bit more of a traditional ryokan experience, especially considering the price. The building is very small with no garden access and breakfast is not included. It is also located far away from central Kyoto and it was difficult for our taxi driver to get down the very narrow streets.
- Anne (10/5): A Traditional Japanese Inn - lovingly cared for & close to markets & bakeries. - Lovely traditional Japaese Inn...lovingly attended too by 2 kind ladies with great attention to detail. We specifically booked the large suite with private garden views.
A tranquil & relaxing setting to come "home" to after a day of exploring the amazing Kyoto.
- Omar (10/5): Exceptional - The facility was kept clean. The vibe of the ryokan was great and felt authentic for Kyoto. Location was great to access all major spots. Our host was very friendly and introduced us to her adorable cats! The rooms were nice and wash room was amazing! Our room had a view of a beautiful garden. Price of breakfast was a bit on the higher end.
- Tanja (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ilona (6/5): The house was nice, the host kind, breakfast nothing special. Don‘t take with large luggage. For 1 night interesting, bu - Old Japanese house Stairs were inconvenient with suitcase
- Robert (10/5): Exceptional -
- Birgitte (10/5): - Authentic experience fitting a stay in Kyoto. Staff very helpful and knowledgeable. Would recommend.
- Rammy (8/5): Very good -
- Rachel (10/5): A must stay when visiting Kyoto - all part of the traditional experience - Absolutely beautiful property - a true traditional Japanese experience, the owner was a very lovely and kind lady and made the experience even better
- Suraj (9/5): Superb -
- Bhandari (9/5): Superb -
- Alexandra (10/5): A quiet authentic ryokan with high quality service and excellent location in northern part of Kyoto - I booked a room with the access to the inner courtyard. It was beautiful, with Japanese stone lanterns, with a pine tree, a red maple tree and bright green moss. Everything was authentic and it felt like I was a hundred years back. However, all the facilities were modern and in an excellent condition. The owner was a lovely woman, warmly welcoming her guests. She served a traditional Japanese breakfast in the morning. The location is near a few bus stops so it was very easy to go around the city. It took about half an hour by bus to come to the hotel from Kyoto station. The Imperial palace is about 20 min walk away, the same for the subway. It was exactly what I was looking for - to spend a few days in a quiet and secluded place in the middle of the peak tourist season in Kyoto. The only irritating thing was weak wi-fi connection. It was a challenge to do video calls with the family.
- Clarice (9/5): Lovely traditional Ryokan in quiet convenient location. - Beautiful traditional Ryokan- exactly what we wanted. Lovely and serene garden. Owner was super helpful in recommending nearby restaurants and calling taxis. Pillows could have been more comfortable- pretty small & dense material. Would be great to have more than one pillow per bed as many people have back problems and need to sleep with a pillow between/under the knees. Also a sheet would be great too as the comforter- while it was wonderful, was a bit too hot without a sheet or thin blanket under it. I travel with a sarong, so it was fine- just a suggestion.
- Amélie (9/5): Great experience, will definitely come back again! - The room was great, the beds were comfortable, the garden was beautiful. The host was so nice, she even took picture of us when we left. We had breakfast once, it was traditional and really tasty. The neighboorhood was calm and there is a supermarket really close. I'll go back again if i come back to Japan. We had difficulties figuring out how to lower the AC, so we were a bit cold. But nothing that a hot shower and a warm bed can't solve.
- Kold (8/5): Very charming and personal stay. - Very charming old ryokan, so sweet hostess.
The hostess even made a little tee ceremony for us. We ware unsure of if dinner was included in the price.
Since breakfast wasn’t included, we think is was a bit pricy.
- Joaquim (9/5): Superb -
- Francisco (10/5): Amazing, traditional stay with superb host! - The ryokan was simply stunning. Facilities were really well kept, traditional Japanese house. The lady in charge of the ryokan was an absolute delight, super kind, attentive and helpful. She helped us receive our luggage through Yamato while we were out enjoying the city, she helped us forward our luggage through Yamato as well and she was an AMAZING host. Also the traditional breakfast offered was delicious! The only thing we would’ve liked is that there were no stairs to our room, but this speaks to the traditional space it is, as ryokans usually have this type of layout. Also, shower inside the room without having to go down and up a flight of stairs would’ve been nice.
- Andrew (8/5): Very good -
- Memory (9/5): Very friendly staff - Very friendly staff, authentic room with a small Japanese garden It was not close to much public transport, only a bus
- Ann (8/5): Nice stay in Kyoto - The staff was super friendly and helpful, the breakfast was delicious, and the room was very clean! We especially loved the shower!! It didn’t have the tatami mats like I was hoping.
- Harch (10/5): Exceptional -
- Louise (8/5): A genuine experience with a lovely host. - The room was large with a beautiful view of a Japanese garden. We were not to go into the garden but could open the door for fresh air. The beds were super comfortable and the bath was deep. We ordered the traditional Japanese rice breakfast (an extra Y1800 each), whilst the coffee was excellent it wasn't worth the additional Y790. An accomodation fee was charged Y1200. The host was lovely and happy to help. There are three rooms at the Ryokan but we were the only guests there. It was very quiet and situated in a residential area. The bus was easy to catch however.
- Mitchell (10/5): Exceptional -
- Xiaoling (2/5): Very poor -
- Sydney (7/5): My first time at a Ryokan - Love the cleanliness and big bath tub Expensive at usd400/nite but does not include breakfast. No place in bathroom to hang clothes or towels. A small rack 2' tall is impossible for towels.
- Dylan (10/5): Will recommend to everyone! - The place was very quiet and clean. Colder than expected, but not their fault as the house is old.
- Haolin (9/5): Superb -
- Reyne (10/5): Beautiful traditional home in a quiet backstreet of Kyoto to relax and unwind - The host was super friendly and passionate and cooked a delicious breakfast. Very relaxed atmosphere, in a quiet street. Simple bedroom, but very spacious and comfortable. Had a nice balcony overlooking the neighbouring street. The location is out of the way of lots of attractions in Kyoto, and you have to walk about 10-15 minutes to get to streets with restaurants. On the flip side, it means it's very quiet and peaceful during your stay and is a welcome change of pace from the hustle and bustle of the busier areas in town.
- Alexkech (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing experience that we will remember all our life. The futons were so confortable, the design of the room, and the garden. The breakfast was great. I dream about coming back and relax :)
- Jeremy (9/5): A great experience to stay for the experience of a ryokan - There is a lot of character in the design of the place and the garden view gave a very Zen feel.
The host is fluent in English, made us feel welcome and is attentive to our needs. We asked to store our luggage and arrived at the ryokan at 2pm. While the check in time was 4pm, as the room was ready, the host allowed us to check in early.
We paid for the breakfast at the ryokan and the breakfast was a traditional japanese breakfast, which made us feel like we were having a home cooked meal.
The host also initiated to take our photo and have it sent to us via email.
While the stay was more expensive than a lot of hotels in Kyoto, the experience to live in a ryokan and to be hosted by a lovely person made the stay memorable. The location is a little out of the way, we had to take two buses from Nijo station. However, there could have been more efficient routes, that we are unaware of. It was also interesting to see a ryokan in the middle of a residential area, which felt like a fusion of modern and traditional life.
The garden was closed due to the cultivation of moss, so we were only able to look through the glass doors. Not sure, if the doors will be unlocked when the moss growing period is over, but it will be enjoyable to be able to step into the garden.
There was an accommodation tax upon arrival of around 1000 yen, if i did not recall wrongly. This was in the fine print of Booking.com, which I missed out and was totally my fault. Writing down here just for awareness.
Overall, the above points are more for awareness and did not take much away from the experience.
- Merna (9/5): Cute 100+yr old ryokan in Kyoto! - The owner Hisayo was so nice and kind to us! The place was amazing and well taken care of. We did not opt for bfast but did get coffee every morning, which was excellent! Truly amazing to be able to stay at a 100yr old ryokan. Location is also great within walking distance of some of the major attractions! We were on the second floor and the floors were creaky, which made us nervous to make too much sound. The sound carries and we worried about disturbing other guests. The shower was also on the first floor, which isn't convenient for people that don't like stairs.
- Camille (9/5): Superb -
- Donna (10/5): Exceptional - We loved the traditional beauty of Ryokan Tanoya. Our room was spotless, had all reuired amenities, plus we had an amazing view to a beautiful garden, and was very peaceful. Our host was welcoming, friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed the traditional Japanese breakfast. It's a little out of the way, but easily accessable by bus. It is just a 20 min stroll to Nijo castle, and a 35 min stroll to Kinkaku-ji. Nothing for us to dislike. It was exactly what we had hoped for.
- Ciara (9/5): A lovely traditional stay - The place was really lovely to stay in - it felt like a very traditional Japanese home. The room was spacious and had a toilet, sink and mirror attached, the main bathroom was separate but had a full shower room with great shampoo, conditioner and body wash. The place was cleaned daily with new towels each day and your bed made. The owner was lovely and greeted you each time you came back from being out. It rained when we visited and she kindly let us borrow umbrellas. It was a quiet area and the bed was super comfortable. I didn't realise just how far away from things this stay is. If you don't mind walking to places or paying for a taxi, then it's fine! We found the busses to be too crowded so we would walk to JR Nijo station and take the local trains around the city or to Kyoto station for other train lines. You are also asked to pay an 'accomodation tax' upon arrival which was a surprise - they also asked it to be in cash, so it was lucky I had some on me. Our room was up a very steep set of stairs and the bathroom was down stairs (very private) but just in case you have a disability or can't do stairs - I would let the owner know first.
- Mary (8/5): Gorgeous, restful, a place to pause. - Beautiful 100-year-old home, filled with beautiful antiquities. So beautiful, it felt like an Asian museum. We found the location just a little too remote for our purpose. We were visiting Kyoto for the first time, so we were touring daily from one historical site to another, then walking around at night. It would be a beautiful place to slow down and rejuvenate, however, we were geared up for a different type of Kyoto visit.
- Anna (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anonymous (8/5): Excellent experience - Beautifully presented, wonderful host, delicious breakfast Nothing particularly
- Abdullah (10/5): Exceptional - one of great ryokans i see on kyoto
and really great staff
i will back here next visit
- Maryam (10/5): The most wonderful Ryokan Experience - We had an amazing stay at Tanoya Ryokan. We felt so welcomed and the owner arranged a cake for my husbands 30th birthday which was a wonderful touch. Absolutely loved the experience of staying in a Ryokan and the garden & style of this Ryokan was stunning. I would highly recommend this place!
- Sara (10/5): - I can’t say enough about the house and our lovely host. Our room was a Japanese style one.. charming, spacious with a private garden. The breakfast was 10/10. Will come back for sure and tell our friends about the wonderful place.
- Kayla (8/5): Very good -
- George (9/5): Restful comfortable and in good taste. - Very restful decoration that alluded to the history of the neighborhood and yet was fully functional. Lovely Japanese breakfast, tasty and filling. Fantastic tea available in the morning if you remember to ask. We had the ground floor room with two single beds and a nice view into the pocket Japanese garden plus comfortable chairs to rest and relax in the view. Bathroom facilities as one would expect in Japan, high quality. Super quiet at night. Actually, very little. Access to the Kyoto buses (generally very useful) is not instant (5-10' walk needed). Immediate neighborhood is residential (so not a party place, not masses of ) but the entertainment areas of Kyoto accessible by taxi at reasonable rates.
- Paulett (10/5): We enjoyed our stay at this very nice Ryokan. Everything at the Ryokan was tastefully done. The hostess Hisayo was very - It was lovely. Everything tastefully done.
- Przemyslaw (9/5): Superb - The owner and hotel staff were very friendly and the room was always clean and free water
- Ashani (10/5): Exceptional -
- Eva (8/5): Very good -
- Seda (10/5): 10/10 - highly recommend. Cannot beat this value!! - The hotel room was exceptionally clean and had an amazing view of a small, private Japanese garden. The room was very very clean, and was tidied up daily - with all the amenities and water bottles replaced too. We appreciated the daily water so much after long days of walking! The best part was the shower.... it was to die for! The location is tucked away in a neighborhood, so not very close to the tourist attractions but we did not mind this since Kyoto is so large, there is likely no perfect location. We really enjoyed staying in a non-touristy neighborhood and we had the chance to try authentic restaurants in the area because of this -which we absolutely loved (some of the best places we went in all of Japan).
- Jordan (9/5): Superb -
