Guest Reviews
- X6532ZOkarenh (10/5): Cozy and amazingly delicious! - After a 7 day hike along the Chestnut Trail, we spent 3 lovely evenings at Bad St Isador and had a wonderful time. This is a small, family run guest house and the married hosts were welcoming and helpful. We did not have a car, and so they were kind enough to pick us up at the cable car and very helpful in providing hiking/lunch suggestions nearby.
The bedroom was cozy and very comfortable and the bathroom was clean and spacious. We would absolutely stay again.
The most outstanding part were the delicious dinners (and breakfasts) each day....oh my goodness, they were spectacular. Our group of 6 people included one chef and several foodies, and all were impressed. Delicious!
Thank you for making our visit so pleasant. It was a treat to sit in the beautiful dining room and have campari and orange and gaze at the spectacular view.
- kevin (10/5): - Wonderful family run hotel with amazing meals. Very friendly and extremely helpful with everything from rides from the gondola to planning hikes. Beautiful views from the restaurant! A great time.
- Catherine (10/5): - This place is so special! The family that owns and runs this hotel is what makes your stay amazing. The hospitality was beyond our expectations and we ate some of the best meals we have had in Italy here. The surrounding scenery is gorgeous. The peace and nature you get here is unmatched. Expedia made the check in a bit stressful as they said there was no front desk at this hotel (which is true) and you had to be there by 6:00pm to receive your keys. Or you had to contact the property beforehand to make other arrangements. Our rental car took way longer to get upon arrival, making us feel very rushed to get to the property in time. The family that owns the hotel lives there full time and are interacting with the guests, serving meals and drinks up until about 10pm each night. You do need a rental car to get to this hotel. Our only complaint is the road up to it. It’s a one lane steep climb with blind spots and turns. Go slowly and be cautious around the corners. Oncoming vehicles will find ways for you to get around them as there are some pull out areas. Other than that, this place is a gem! A great location for our Dolomite excursions. 10/10 for us and we will definitely be back!
- yeokyungc (10/5): Perfect vacation! - Absolutely loved our stsay here! The hotel is located up in the mountains with breathtaking views. Both breakfast and dinner were incredibly dilicious. The host was so kind and welcoming, which made the experience even more special. Taking the cable car to get to the hotel was fun and unique!
Klar anbefaling.
- sandiablonde (10/5): Simply Magical - My wife and I have stayed here several times before and we brought some friends here last year also. Great place, great host, great food. There isn't anything bad I can say about this place because I simply love it here. The view from the room is incredible. A thunderstorm rolled in one evening as I sat with my friend and we drank schnapps. Magical. Truly. The wife cooks really good food and the variety is great. Breakfast is also good and the view from the dining room is unbeatable. The addition of the free card you get when you check in, which gives you free access to all public transportation including the trams and the train as well as free access to museums is well worth the cost of the stay.
- Ada (10/5): - My husband and I stayed here in mid June and it was wonderful. The location is beautiful and provided a wonderful pool to enjoy on a warm summer day. The owners were incredibly welcoming and provided for our every need and request. The optional dinner was delicious and of exceptional quality, a perfect ending to a day of hiking, biking, and exploring. Looking forward to returning.
- sandiablonde (10/5): Still wonderful - We've stayed here before and will be staying here again next year because it is that wonderful. The staff is awesome: very friendly, accommodating, and helpful. The rooms were very nice and comfortable, the bathrooms clean, and the views from our private, large balcony extraordinary. I absolutely love this area and with the addition of the South Tyrol card that allows free access to all the public transportation and museums, this pension is by far the best deal of all the places we have ever stayed in Europe. Dinners, though set, are very tasty and well prepared and the salad bar is very nice. The drive up from Balzano can be a bit daunting for some people but it is well worth it. Lots of hiking trails that a start right from the grounds and the views.... just spectacular.
- Joanna (10/5): Excellent hotel, a real gem! - Excellent hotel - the owners couldn’t be more helpful, delicious food (vegetarian’s really well catered for) that was brilliant value and a fantastic view towards Bolzano and the mountains. Great walks from the hotel and a lovely swimming pool to cool off in.
Definitely recommend this hotel to anyone wanting somewhere to stay in this area.
- rosiebell42 (10/5): A special place- go! - Authentic spotless family run hotel with fabulous views and home cooked food. The pool is lovely to cool down after walking, and it’s a great trip down into town by cable car. A great place to relax and switch off- We will definitely return again
- Christine (10/5): Lovely setting - A beautiful setting, great service, food and value. Can’t wait to stay again!
- Christine (10/5): Excellent in every way... a pearl - A wonderful little oasis amid superb alpine scenery. Accomodation is spacious, clean and cosy. In the evening a 3 course meal was served for a very readonable price and was excellent, local produce and wine. Breakfast buffet was also very good. It really couldn’t have been better and we highly recommend it.
- Weyes1 (8/5): Very Nice Value - We spent 4 days here in October, 2019. We had a leased car so we found our way to the B&B with our GPS with no problems. The drive is lovely but be forewarned that you need to be comfortable driving on a road that climbs and has numerous switchbacks. We found ourselves hugging the side of the road when a car approached from the opposite direction. We are experienced mountain drivers and rather enjoy this kind of road but driving on it wasn't as easy as taking the mountain lift into town. Bad St. Isidor is not a fancy place but the rooms are clean and ours had a separate living area with a sofa and TV. Be aware that no Kleenex tissue is provided nor are there any washcloths, bar soap or shampoo. Since other places we stayed also did not provide tissues, we were not surprised and had a box with us, but you should know this and be prepared. Our room was #3. While large it has some issues. The beds were hard as were the pillows but everyone has their own softness preference so I don't hold this against them. My husband was comfortable but I was not. The main problem with this room is that it is above the conservatory/dining room. As a result, people hang around outside smoking. If the windows are open, the smoke will waft into the room. We also noticed persistent kitchen odors. Having said all of this, we would stay again. First of all, the value is great. We paid for half board and had breakfast and dinner there. We also received transportation vouchers to use with the lift and the city buses. In addition, we received a museum pass. We used the museum pass but not the transportation because we wanted our car with us for drives into the Dolomites. Now let's discuss food...it is terrific. Breakfast every morning had a vast array to choose from but our favorite was the local speck and the homemade cornetti. Dinner was always something different and a fixed menu. We never left hungry. One night was beet risotto, chicken cordon bleu, and apple cupcake with cream. Another night was salad, pizza, beef goulash with potato croquettes. Our third dinner was spaghetti amertriciana, baked chicken, ice cream and warm raspberries. And our last dinner was puff pastry filled with veggies, local salmon and tiramisu. Everything is freshly made by their in-house cook. The staff are friendly, the food is excellent and the value is hard to beat. We would simply want a different room away from the smokers and kitchen smells the next time we visit. The location of Bolzano and the Bad St. Isidor is great for drives around the Dolomites. We saw quite a lot in our 4 day stay and cannot wait to return.
- Verified traveler (10/5): What a wonderfull surprise! - Et helt fantastisk sted. Meget rent. Fantastisk udsigt (vær. 3). Meget søde og servicemindet personale (sød familie). God mad.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Trevligt hotell - Vacker utsikt.
- Ross (10/5): Outstanding alpine stay - With my wife, we stayed one night here on a recent Italy trip. The stay was really outstanding!. The location was amazing, high on the hill, overlooking Bolzano, and the snow-caps of the alps in the distance. Hospitality was exceptional. The owner made us welcome, hosted all meals and made effort to all guests to be comfortable. Room was comfortable, and with a balcony shared the exceptional valley views.
Would recommend to all.
- Davidcheung (10/5): Lovely hotel with good views and good meals - Hotel is up on a hill. The room was not big but decent. The service was good and the meals: breakfast and dinner were wonderful. The staff were very friendly and provided very useful travel information. There was a pool, though the weather was very cool in October. We were given a Bozen Card which provided free rides on cable car, buses and free entries to museums. We enjoyed very much our stay there.
- Y5061RCtrevorm (10/5): outstanding location and excellent hotel - This is a fantastic hotel with an amazing location (mountain views from the balcony). The hotel is family run and we could not have been better looked after. The food is outstanding (definitely opt for half-board) and although it was a set menu (no choice) which changed daily the quality of the food and the variety over the course of the week was very impressive. You can manage without a car (just about) but the taxi from Bolzano to the hotel is 30 Euros so the cable car is the best option to go into town, although this does entail quite a steep walk from the hotel which takes about 45 minutes. But the hotel owner or the chef will often run you up to the cable car themselves, especially in the morning.
- marktN9596EZ (10/5): $ night stay riding around the Dolomites - We wished we could have stayed longer, but alas we had a scheduled trip touring around Europe, so we couldn't .......
The location was fantastic, the view was absolutely amazing, worth every penny, nothing was too much trouble, the food was brilliant, which was for breakfast and evening meals, excellent value for money and highly recommended
- sandiablonde (10/5): Wonderful view, great food - This was the first place we stayed at on our newest European vacation and although there was a bit of a problem with the road leading up to the pension (as in it was closed from 9 am until 6 pm) everything else was wonderful. It sits on a hillside in the midst of apple orchards and has a spectacular view over Bolzano and the adjacent mountains. The room was large and clean, the bed comfortable, and the balcony very nice. The bathroom was a little small but that seems to be the way it is for these pensions over here so we've gotten used to it. If you're a big person, however, it could present a problem. The breakfast was good, with a decent selection of home-made hams and bacon. You could get eggs ordered as you like and there was plenty of fruit and homemade breads and yogurts. We had the half-board option and thus had dinner also. The dining room has a great view and the food was very well prepared with a good variety from day to day. The staff was super friendly (except for the father at first, but he warmed up toward the end) and the best part is that you get a local area card that can be used to ride all the trams, cable-cars, trains, and buses in the area FOR FREE. That by itself is well worth coming here. We hiked all over the place using the free card. We will definitely come back here and are already planning a smaller trip just to come back to this region because it was so much fun. If you come to Balzano, stay here. It's that simple.
- kashmira_v61 (10/5): Superb.. hidden gem. - Wow...is all you can say when you go to this lovely heavenly place. We really wished we could have stayed longer.. I could live there forever.
Such a lovely room ,we were in room no.8. two rooms, each having a Balcony facing the mountains in the yonder. The hotel is really clean... must say very good housekeeping .. a very nice bathroom too, as compared to some hotels that have really small pokey cubicles... not much of toiletries , but thats ok.
The family run hotel, is all about warmth and affection which they show you as soon as they come to receive you at the Cable car station.
Doris and her father are excellent in cooking the most delicious meals , truly Tirolean fare, and I must insist you must go Half Board , becoz its not worth missing their hospitality and tasty food. Bernie, Doris husband is so friendly and kind and they are all so mannerful and helpful.
We were there from 6/7 to 8/7 and were more than happy. We would strongly recommend it, and would someday love to return to this hidden gem on
mt. Kohlern.
Thanks Doris and family. Hugs to baby Norah.

- teet731 (10/5): Well worth a drive - The hotel is situated up the hill approximately 20 minutes from the city center. However, the hotel ticked all the boxes. The view is awesome, the owner and staff is very friendly and helpful and the food both dinner and breakfast is very tasty.
- RickH26757 (10/5): Wish we could have stayed longer - Way up the mountain (910M above sea level), on a narrow and twisting road. The staff was very friendly and treated us like old friends. The room was nice, and both the dinner and breakfast well worth it (glad we didn't have to drive back into town too!) Beautiful views, you felt special to be here.
- ge0rgiana (8/5): Splendid views and good food. - We stopped here for one night towards the end of October. We drove 5 km uphill from Bolzano and enjoyed splendid views down into the valley and across to the snowy mountain tops. Our bedroom on the second floor was as pictured on TA, small but adequate and simply furnished in light pine with one pillow each. The adjoining shower room was also small, no toiletries or hair dryer provided just liquid soap. The towels could have been larger and thicker and a bottle of water in the bedroom would have been welcome. The large dining area was chilly at first, as it is little more than a conservatory but there is a stove and it did warm up. There is no choice with the menu but we enjoyed the three course meal with drinks, water, tea and coffee. The smaller breakfast room is next to the kitchen and has a huge stove which in pre-central heating days doubled as a bed. We paid 126 Euros in total.
We were given a Bolzano card whch entitled the bearer to free public transport and free entry to the museum and swimming pool. Well done Bolzano!
- AndrewJacksonPhoto (10/5): Excellent food and welcome - We stayed at this hotel in October and received a very warm family welcome. The food was excellent and surpassed all our expectations of a small family hotel. I would highly recommend this hotel, the views were spectacular - own transport is recommended as it is 2 mile walk up hill to the cable car. There were no language problems as the owners daughter and son in law speak good English.
- berstein01 (10/5): Lovely small family run hotel tucked away in the mountain. - Comfortable room with a fine view of the mountains. Excellent dinner, good breakfast. The owners are really fantastic and made sure our stay with them was good. Close to mountain walks and easy access to the town.
