Guest Reviews
- kendall (10/5): - Oh my gosh, this place is a hidden gem. The pictures do NOT do it justice at all!! We were blown away by our accommodations when we arrived. First, we were just expecting a bedroom and bathroom. We got a lovely kitchen, a sitting room, giant bedroom, and a bathroom. They also provided a lovely breakfast spread each morning. Not only were we blown away by our accommodations, the entire castle is just stunning! Staying here was absolutely a highlight for us for a week long trip around Scotland. We will definitely return! Also, the hosts were incredibly kind and accommodating! It is only a short bus ride into town and you can flag down the bus from the driveway. Don’t second guess, just book!
- Natalie (10/5): - The owner was friendly and offers great ideas of places nearby to see. Breakfast was continental, provided for us as self serve in our room. That was really nice as we had coffee when we wanted it and could move as quickly or slowly as we wished in the morning.
- Michael (10/5): - Wonderful experience. Helpful host and very sweet pet Border Collie to keep us company on walks around the beautiful property
- Rejoice (10/5): - The host was lovely. He drove me to the station when I missed the bus. I enjoyed my stay
- Timothy (10/5): - This quite a lovely property with great history. The owners are very nice and the communication was outstanding. Thank you for hosting us it was a memorable first stay in Scotland.
- Lynn (10/5): - We loved staying here. Gyp is the sweetest dog, bring her a ball! She loves belly rubs. She made the trip extra special. But also, the castle and the grounds are beautiful. David was a lovely host.
- Lester (8/5): - It's a lovely castle! While the tour of the castle was fun and very informative, the castle was by in large not accessible due to host living quarters. My wife and I would have liked to see more of the castle itself and have a historical handout to keep. Obviously, the castle was the highlight. While we stayed downstairs in the old kitchen, which was by the was a pleasant experience, we had a desire to sit in the library and have tea or coffee and absorb the ambiance.
- Lisa (10/5): Peaceful, clean and comfortable - Beautiful castle in the middle of a forest about 10 minute drive from the center of St Andrews (you will need a car or taxi if you stay here). Had a mini apartment that was enormous and spotless with huge sitting and bedroom with very comfortable bed. Manager/owner was very proactive/responsive, but be aware that I didn’t see anyone the entire weekend. Kitchen was stocked with many breakfast things and real coffee. Will absolutely be staying here again.
- Lydia (10/5): - Stunningly beautiful. Huge room — really a suite. Very comfortable bed. Garden doors that open to paths and outdoor seating. 10 minute drive into St. Andrew’s.
- Leeanda (10/5): - This is a beautiful property sitting in the forest. It was just outside of St. Andrews, avoiding the hustle and bustle. David the proprietor is the star of this place. We could have listened to his stories forever. We had the lovely apartment at the top of the castle with a sitting room, spacious bedroom, kitchen, and bath. Breakfast was supplied in the kitchen and had plenty of options. We drove about 7 miles into Anstruther for dinner.
- Gary (10/5): - Great host.
- William (10/5): - Loved the owners…. Very helpful and knowledgeable
- Robert (10/5): - WOW! What a great place to stay. And it's a CASTLE!!!!! Yes, you're staying in a CASTLE. In SCOTLAND!!! Very convenient to the small fishing towns dotting the coast along the East Neck of Fife. And very short distance from Saint Andrews. We enjoyed a two night stay with breakfast. Room was spacious and very elegant ... as you'd expect from a castle. Owner David was very welcoming and helpful with advice and also offering up a great story or two. An absolute delightful human being. The grounds are walkable and there is outdoor seating. The castle is in the country so it's quiet and away from the hustle and bustle. But a great location for short day-trips. We loved our time there as it made for some fabulous memories.
- Brittany (10/5): - Perfect comfortable and quiet stay for our two nights in St Andrew’s. Well priced. Would stay again.
- Cheryl (10/5): - We liked the whole experience. David made us feel very welcome. It was different to anywhere else we had stayed. The set up for breakfast was great. The bed was comfortable. The room was spacious.
- Troy (10/5): - Amazing place, and the hosts were so kind and personable.
- david (8/5): - Wonderful unique place in lovely grounds. Very comfortable and relaxing.
- Sarah (10/5): Unique and memorable stay - Stravithie castle is an opportunity to experience something quite unique and special.
The welcome included a brief tour of David’s home and interesting information about the previous owners. This was in addition to being shown our own accommodation which was spacious and comfortable.
David’s dog was a most welcoming host too!
I was most appreciative of the effort that David had gone to in catering for my gluten intolerance.
A place that we would certainly love to return to if we are visiting the area in the future.
- Graham (10/5): - Friendly, large room with everything we could need in a beautiful building.
- Christine (10/5): Stay in a beautiful castle - What an amazing and quirky place. My son and I loved this castle. David the owner gave us some history and showed us around. It’s just beautiful. We felt so welcome.
- John (10/5): - If you want a unique hotel experience this is a fantastic real ancient interesting property in a very quiet rural location. We had a spacious apartment, large bedroom with king size bed, large sitting room with period furniture to match the setting - with mod cons flat screen TV and wi-fi - also small kitchen with all the requirements for a continental breakfast including chilled items in a fridge and bathroom with shower. The property is surrounded by large garden areas and woodland with a stream running through it. The hosts David and Renatta were very pleasant and helpful, taking our luggage to our room and giving us the required info for our apartment and a brief history of the castle.
The castle is a short drive from St Andrews, as the castle is not signposted the host David will send you detailed directions.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Stravithie Castle and would highly recommend the experience.
- Charles (10/5): - What a delightful place! The house and grounds are beautiful, our room was very spacious and comfortable. It’s about a 10 minute drive to St Andrews.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Stravithie Castle is like a wonderful step-back in time. The grounds are beautiful and it's a very peaceful, quiet place to stay. The proprietor, David, was very attentive and helpful and made us feel welcome. I would absolutely visit again if I return to Scotland and I would highly recommend a stay here to anyone!
- Terence (10/5): - Different and out of the way quiet country location , great for explore east fife
- Koling (10/5): - This property presents the unique opportunity for a true Scottish experience in an authentic castle. Hosts were very friendly and extremely helpful. We just say enough about how much we enjoyed our stay! Highly recommended. 5 Star review!
- Lynn (10/5): - To actually stay in a Castle- not in the grounds, amazing!
- Nikola (10/5): - We liked everything
- James (10/5): - A thoroughly enjoyable experience in every respect. Spotlessly clean with great attention to detail. It had that personal touch which is lacking in many establishments. The property was easy to locate due to the excellent communication from the owner. On arrival we were warmly greeted and given a short history of the property together with some very helpful housekeeping information. The accommodation was very spacious, comfortable and more than met our expectations. We will have no hesitation in returning should we be in the area at some future date. A most enjoyable and memorable experience.
- brad (10/5): - Very unique castle deep in the woods just outside st. Andrews. Our room, which had a bathroom, kitchen, an enormous bedroom and great living room
- Stanton (8/5): - Great location, ambiance and beautiful area of Scotland.
- William (10/5): - Very Quiet, large suite. Great place to unwind after a day at St Andrews
- Sam (10/5): - Wonderful stay in this charming, quiet, self contained room. Good wi-fi, nice kitchen and good, modern bathroom. My only wish is that the room would have had a bath but I knew it didn’t at the time of booking, so no complaints.
Hosts were excellent, very friendly and were very respectful of privacy.
- Alana (10/5): - This is a gorgeous castle. Our accommodations were perfect and much more than we expected. We will definitely be back.
- Sonia (10/5): - Une nuit dans un château en Écosse c'est magique.
- Karrie (10/5): - This was such a fun property to stay at! David and his wife are lovely and accommodating. I'll certainly be staying with them again.
- Julie (10/5): Regatta and David’s Castle - Loved staying at Renatta and David’s castle. Close to town yet remote and absolutely beautiful!
- Ella (10/5): - Loved staying at this private castle, even if it was the original maids quarters! Spacious room with french doors opening onto the lawn garden and creek below. Bathroom was fine and water on a timer but always hot. It is outside of St Andrews but worth it for the experience and peaceful ambience. Continental breakfast was in our mini fridge and replenished daily so we could eat at our leisure. No microwave which would have been an advantage for quick evening meals. Bed mattress is old and needs replacing but these are only the 2 things I was disappointed in. David the owner/host greeted us on arrival and was so welcoming and knowledgeable about his homes history that it was a privilege to be there.
If you walk down the amazing treelined driveway and cross the road there is a winding, walkable path that that takes you to a Church and a cemetery that is worth reading for its history. I would definitely stay here again and highly recommend.
- Joanna (10/5): - A good b&b venue with a charming, enthusiastic owner. Very spacious room. Good quality and plentiful continental breakfast.
- Teresa (10/5): - The room and the grounds were stunning. The hosts went above and beyond to make our stay outstanding.
- Ralph (10/5): Beautiful Castle - We enjoyed our stay at the castle. David was very welcoming. The room was really a large suite with separate living room and kitchen. The bed was comfortable. The bathroom as small but adequate. Our only concern is the room smelled quite musty when we very arrived. It was better over time. The Old Course is no more than 10 minutes away. The castle was easy to find by following GPS. I would not recommend staying here without a car. Overall a nice experience in a castle. Felt like Scotland.
- Dami (10/5): - Beautiful castle in a quiet neighborhood! The radiator worked great and so did the renovated bathroom/shower. The owner David is super friendly and a joy to chat with. Thank you for a wonderful stay!
- Brian (10/5): Castle Stay/ Royal treatment - Host very available, friendly, and informative. Host took us in to town in his personal car and pointed out some places of interest. Made our stay enjoyable.
- Jolee (10/5): - What a fabulous place, with a fabulous host. Would highly recommend and would stay again.
- Kara (10/5): - Excellent stay at the Castle. The owners are very friendly and helpful.
- Peter (10/5): - Such a unique place to stay. Better than any chain hotel.
- Paul (10/5): Great discovery - Unique luxury property with a really welcoming host/proprietor.
Will look to use again as great alternative to a hotel chain.
- Cassio (10/5): - Excellent place. Great experience sleeping at a castle. David and Renata are amaizing!
- HELEN (10/5): - Amazing and unique place to stay if you’re visiting St. Andrews. A short cab or bus ride to town or the many golf courses. Very quiet in the evenings and we slept like stones. Highly recommended!
- Mary Ann (10/5): Castle in the Woods - Stravithie Castle exceeded our expectations in privacy, scenic beauty, and castle living! The owners are personable, welcoming and helpful. A tour of the upper chambers helped us understand the history of the castle, whereas our room on the bottom floor opened to the creekside lawns and the walled secret garden. The room was large, decorated in the manner one dreams of a castle to be, and had a separate kitchen where a very delicious breakfast was ready.
The owners make this castle a wonderful experience.
- Mr WG (10/5): Highly recommended - David is a fabulous host. Lovely rooms in a stunning setting in beautiful gardens. David gave us great ideas of things to do in the area. Highly recommend!
- Adam (10/5): - Beautiful property and lovely hosts. Only 10 minutes from St Andrews.
- Colleen (8/5): - Overall the experience was positive. The location is beautiful, but we weren't there long enough to learn the bus route in andvout of town.
The bachelor suite was adorable but musty as it is in the basement. If you have lung issues I wouldn't recommend. But otherwise a stellar experience.
- David (10/5): Loved it..! - Loved it… great place to stay… it’s cool and very charming… authentic…
- katherine (10/5): - Very interesting and original location and property. Close to quaint towns. Very convenient private kitchen with breakfast includedy
- Peter (10/5): - If you like an old Victorian experience this is a place for you. Instead of a single room, you get a whole Victorian apartment in the castle. Bring your own vine and snacks and enjoy the great view from the sitting room.
- Dwight (10/5): - Had a wonderful stay, owner told nice stories of Castle and things he has found since inheriting it years ago.
- Kwame (10/5): Review From Kwame Acquah - My recent stay at Stravithie Castle was enchanting. This historic castle offers a perfect blend of old-world charm and modern luxury. The warm hospitality, classic rooms, and delicious Scottish cuisine made it an unforgettable experience. The surroundings are perfect for nature lovers, with nearby golf courses and beaches. I highly recommend Stravithie Castle for a delightful Scottish retreat.
- Scott (10/5): - What a beautiful picture perfect property and such a fun treat to stay in a castle on our visit to st Andrews! Our hosts were delightful & welcoming and we enjoyed playing with their dog too! We would definitely stay here again!!
- Joshua (10/5): - The owners were amazing and gave us a wonderful experience with a tour of the rooms. They were so accommodating and made sure we were comfortable. It is so peaceful and quiet at night, and the beds are very comfortable. The grounds are beautiful! We highly recommend it for anyone who wants a quiet, peaceful oasis only a few miles from St. Andrews. 10 out of 10 - we will definitely come back when we visit again!
- Anne (10/5): - We LOVED staying in this beautiful castle and really enjoyed the owners, the big rooms, and the beautiful property. This was a very so Ciao place for a great value.
- Mark (10/5): - The property is absolutely perfect. The room is clean, comfortable and all amenities including wifi are available. We slept better than we do at home. The area is very safe with no other properties visible for miles. The kitchenette was perfect, romantic and well stocked. The proprietors were very friendly, welcoming and helpful to our needs. What a dream stay.
- Michelle (10/5): - The rooms and sitting areas were spacious and wonderful. The hosts were very lovely and welcoming people. The only downside was low water pressure in the shower. Truely enjoyed our stay though and would again in a heartbeat!
- Celina (10/5): - Wonderful
- Steve (10/5): - Beautiful room. A friendly dog that liked laying catch with small stones. Loved it.
- Michelle (10/5): - Wonderful host, lovely property.
- David (10/5): - Fabulous stay in a truly beautiful place. Rooms were spacious, clean and had loads if character. Contental breakfast already in your room which was great. Room had a seperate kitchen area where we had breakfast from the fridge. Bedroom had large double doors looking out to countryside and passing river. However must also say we staying in a castle full of history and character hosted by GENUINELY the nicest people we have ever stayed with.
- Colin (10/5): - Very friendly hosts
Beautiful large Victorian building
Comfortable and very spacious accommodation consisting of a large bedroom, a comfortable sitting room, small kitchen and a shower/ toilet.
Pleasant views.
- Frederick (10/5): - This renovated privately-owned castle has 3 rooms available with kitchen and stocked for continental breakfast. Very spacious and enjoyable. David shared the history of this almost 200 year old estate. Finding the location was the only challenge but David directed us to the driveway that has no signage.
- Robert (10/5): Castle Stay - Host and hostess and accommodations were great!
- Richard (10/5): - Exceptional setting in a castle. Very spacious and comfortable. Be sure to follow check in instructions as well as specific directions. It's a well hidden spot but well worth it.
- Keith (10/5): Fantastic place to stay near St Andrews - What a grand place to stay, and I'd recommend Stravithie Castle in a heartbeat.
Our only gripe was the lack of signs directing us from the road and into the property, but once we'd found the right place, parked up and made a fuss of the beautiful, resident sheepdog, owner David gave us a thoroughly friendly welcome and took us up to our room, which turned out to be an expansive suite complete with living room, a huge bedroom, kitchen and bathroom.
Breakfast items were all ready in the fridge for us, and although the shower took a while to get going, it was fine.
David was open and honest in admitting the WiFi wasn't great, and the TV only picked up a handful of BBC channels, but we didn't care a jot!
The surroundings were just stunning, the hospitality was first rate, and the dog was a joy.
Overall, an excellent experience, and we hope to stay there again one day.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Nice position and quirky - Finding it is a bit difficult, but once you do the welcome from David
is very pleasant. The room however is a bit tired and in the basement. Hot water was a challenge, as was getting the heaters working. But given the shortcomings it was a pleasant place to stay
- Easton (10/5): - Beautiful authentic castle, with wonderful grounds and views surrounding the property. We had our own lounge room, kitchen room, bathroom and bedroom.
- dwaine (10/5): - Fabulous hostess - friendly and welcoming
Very peaceful and tranquil setting. Felt like a castle with all the modern amenities.
Room was delightful with walk out to the garden.
The only thing I would suggest is that there be a sign into the property indicating that it was a bnb as the only sign for the driveway indicated private property.
- Simon (8/5): Lovely stay but missing a couple of key things. - Lovely stay at the castle. I would say that the decor needs a refresh but that’s just my opinion. It looks dated but may be playing on the castle ‘theme’.
The lady that owns the place is lovely and really helpful. However the 7pm latest check in isn’t helpful when working late before arriving. However she was available to let me in when I arrived at after 8pm.
One thing that would be helpful is some signage directing to the house. I managed to get lost in the woods which was slightly creepy. Not one sign and Apple Maps didn’t direct to an obvious entrance.
Pretty sure this place is haunted too.
Breakfast was lovely and set out in the rooms attached Kitchen like a studio. The bed was comfy but two singles pulled together rather than a double/ king as expected.
TV and Wifi were available.
- Robert (10/5): Lovely place. Great host. - David was a tremendous host. Check out was a little early (10:30), but understandable given the circumstances. Highly recommend this spot.
- Lynne (10/5): Amazing! - Amazing one night stay! Beautiful surroundings and not far from St Andrews.Excellent breakfast supplied and hosts are wonderful. The best shower! Comfortable bed too.Would throughly recommend staying here!
- Gordon (10/5): - A warm welcome was received to this charming retreat. The room is more like an apartment with all amenities you would expect. St Andrews is a 10 minute drive away, but the appeal of this place is the tranquility it offers.
- Madison (10/5): Beautiful castle with friendly hosts - Beautiful castle home and property. Close to St. Andrews. Friendly hosts. Very quiet at night. Great sleeping environment. Really enjoyed the experience!
- Jane (10/5): - We had a great stay here in August. The grounds were beautiful and tranquil and it felt like a real country escape. Our room was next to the garden which looked out on to the river and there is a wooded area by the castle to go walking.
The owner and his family were really friendly and helpful and went above and beyond to get me some special food to cater to a food allergy which was much appreciated. Our room had a private kitchen area where the breakfast was left which was handy for preparing food we'd brought as there aren't really any restaurants or shops within walking distance.
The only issue we faced was getting back to St Andrews town (about 5 miles away)- the x59 bus comes every hour along the main road but (after a 45 minute delay) the first one passed us as it was full and the next bus was another hour's wait and was 30 mins late so we probably wouldn't rely on the bus next time and would get a taxi (which costs about £11).
- Steve (10/5): Quaint and quiet - A beautiful location to stay, just a short distance from St Andrew's. We stayed in a beautiful converted suite looking out over the garden. David and family were delightful hosts. Id certainly stay here again next time.
