- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Verified traveler (8/5):
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (6/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): - staffs are very kind and polite. the ofuro a bit too small for the amount of guess.
- Kai Ming (6/5):
- Chien Hung (10/5):
- Richard (6/5): Yamatoya Ryokan - It’s not a bad place! It’s just that for me with my osteoarthritic knee condition, this place is quite inconvenient!
Our room on the second level was old and a little musty! It’s right next to the road and the traffic noises were quite loud towards the latter part of the evening! Plus the paper screen windows is translucent so sleep at night is difficult as there’s no way to darken the light!
The hot bath room is on the fourth level; assessible only by climbing up 14 extremely steep steps! There’s not much grip for the rails as they were part of the structural beams and rather thick! And the timing of this hot bath is rather unusual! It only opens from 5pm till 10:30pm daily! The rest of the time we have to use the high bathtub inside our small toilet for shower! And hot water there is only turned on at 7:00am! No way can we shower earlier than that...making it very inconvenient!
Breakfast was quite good and we’re healthy local selections! This is served at the hall at level one. There’s even a coffee machine we can help ourselves to!
The ryokan is about a ten minute walk towards the Takachiho Shrine which is highly recommended! Visit at night (8:00pm till 9:00pm) for an introductory dance program to the YoKagura Mask dancers! During the day, the 1800 years old shrine is a calm and peaceful place of worship set in an ancient cider grove!
This ryokan is about an eight minute walk to the main bus terminal.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Polite staffs who were very happy to help throughout our stay.
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- Tien Wang (10/5):
- Carol (6/5): - Location is good with local market, famous Miyazaki beef restaurant, convenience store and other eateries all within easy access by foot. Staff speaks English and free parking conveniently around the corner. Although we booked a non smoking room, the smoking spot is just outside our room so this is a big turn off for non smokers like us. For light sleeper, to note that there is no blind and the street traffic is rather audible too.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Staff are the most sincere and helpful i have met while visiting Japan. Tbey are very mindful of the guest request, my sister request for a seat during dinner instead od sitting on tatami floor. The next morning breakfast they make sure that one seat is placed at the table reserved for our breakfast. Excellent service!
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Great location and I love staying in tatami rooms. Bath is not very good. Hallways smells strong of tobacco smoke. Felt too expensive for what you got.
- anthonymC5287JR (6/5): Acceptable for a one night stay - Yamato Ryokan,
Takachiho
The name of this place confuses as it is also called Yamatoya. This Ryokan is sited in the main street in Takachiho and there is a conveniently placed car park just 20 metres up the hill.
Takachiho is famous for its Gorge and this is well worth a visit although it is commercialised somewhat.
The town centre of Takachiho is one main street with side streets off it. I have seen more life in a cometary and better architecture too. There is a shrine at the bottom of the town which is supposed to be worth a visit.
The Ryokan is 3 stories high and I had to carry the wife’s heavy luggage up to our room on the top floor. The room was reasonable having a typical Japanese style tatami floored room. There was also an on suite bathroom with Japanese bath and shower. The room had a TV with no English language programs and the WiFi was feeble.
Meals were served Japanese style in the communal restaurant on the ground floor. The meals were good. The Evening meal consisted of loads and loads of small dishes most of which I enjoyed but there are always a couple of dishes which do not suit my pallet. I always enjoy the Sashimi, the shabu shabu, the tempura and the Chawanmushi. The breakfast was also good and being a gaijin I was given a cold fried egg in lieu of the raw egg that the Japanese eat with their rice in the morning.
Not the best Ryokan that I have stayed at but perfectly acceptable for a one night stay.
- WorldAdventurer_7 (6/5): Was hoping that all the negative reviews were wrong - They aren't.
After two weeks in Japan in early August - the peak of local travel season - this WAS one of our cheapest stays. This was perhaps the greatest redemption of our stay. Overall it was our least favorite locale but it was admittedly the only place with availability.
Likes:
- Powerful AC that didn't turn off when we left the room.
- Rather easy to navigate separation of room, sink and toilet.
- Easy walk to the entertainment and restaurants of the town.
- Big self-parking lot.
Dislikes:
- The shower was public and on a different floor, AND, it had limited hours, so, we opted out of showering to wait until the next destination.
- We were put on the smoking floor but not advised of this until after reserving, arriving, paying and going up to the third floor (at least the room itself didn't stink too bad).
- Staff was notably disengaged and rather unfriendly, probably the most so of all of our 10+ different hotels/B&B's.
- HarpendenSheridan (2/5): Worst ryokan we have stayed in - Have been in Japan for 4 weeks and this was the worst accommodation.
Poor reception...took ages to raise any staff..same when we had no lights working in our room at 9.30pm ,and when we left.dinner was poor until they brought some steak and tempura.
Dining room was really grotty with lots of Mosquitos and was more like an old fashioned village hall that holds keep fit classes as there were lots of mats and music equipment.tables were old and chipped.
Room was basic, but clean.Furniture was really grotty and old.Bathroom was minute, and toiletries basic...even a used bar of soap which looked really old.Terrible view of car park, but probably quieter than being at front as it is on the Main Street.
Could not find anything of interest for breakfast...nothing freshly prepared and no staff spoke to us.No fruit juice or fruit,no yoghurt.
Left hungry and disillusioned with the total lack of hospitality
- Manillagorilla (4/5): Overpriced for a very simple ryokan - Spent two nights there. The food was good but basic. The reception hall and corridors were gloomy with stuffy air. The room was clean but they forgot to prepare our beds the first night (at usd 250 a night, not acceptable!). The bathroom was very basic with soaps and shampoos directly coming from the supermarket. We don't recommend that place.
- vacation_day_n_nite (6/5): Simple ryokan with good food - We stayed one night at Yamatoya after spending an afternoon row boating in Takachiho gorge.
The ryokan is on one of the main street and is probably one of the largest establishment in town. While the building is a bit old, it is well maintained and clean. We had three rooms in the 3rd floor and they were fairly large in size (10 & 12 tatami) with toilet and bath. AC was working perfectly and there is a large parking lot just behind the ryokan.
Dinner and breakfast were plentiful and delicious, and the service was excellent. They can speak a little English.
The town is fairly small and there are only a few streets with the basic necessities, a few convenient stores and restaurants. The main sights in this area are the row boating at Takachiho gorge, and the Takachiho shrine, which should take about half a day.
