Guest Reviews
- Jerry (10/5): - A very unique property (an historic mansion) with friendly staff, a wonderful breakfast, and with plants and gardens throughout. Also, this hotel is within walking distance to many of San Jose's tourist attractions and fun neighborhoods. Highly recommend!
- Mario (10/5): - A eclectic little hotel with very helpful and friendly staff.
Very comfortable and quiet.
- Jerry (10/5): - A wonderful hotel......
- Daryl T (8/5): - Very nice quaint hotel in a very nice part of SJ area ( Aranjuez & Amon) Nice in house restaurant. Beautiful decorative place with many art pieces of all type… Beautiful Plants and Nice Breakfast…
- AUROPUJA (2/5): - Interesting hotel. Super unique. Totally disorganized and our room was infested with bed bugs. We left immediately when we discovered this. Management wasn’t even surprised about the bugs. Huge project to sanitize our luggage so we don’t take them home with us.
- Brad (10/5): - I like old buildings surrounded by nature. This place might not be for everyone but it was perfect for me. Tranquilo. Older people. No stupid young idiots, parties, or noise. Great free breakfast. Amazing staff.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Everything was great except the breakfast, almost all the breads had ants inside the breads! Staff was super friendly and can't complain much about the price, if you are going to eat breakfast though just stick to the hot foods or fresh fruit
- Kimberly (8/5): - Quirky, which I liked. But had a couple of giant cockroaches in my room!
- Eva (10/5): - We really enjoyed our stay here! The room was clean and comfortable. The gardens were really nice. The best part was the breakfast buffet, which had an egg guy and all kinds of delicious food.
- cliff (8/5): - The décor is very interesting and the outside areas pleasant with mature trees for bird and squirrel activity in the center of a city. It is older properties connected so all will not be perfect but offers a very nice ambiance.
One of the most complete breakfast services one will find
- Kindersley (8/5): - Nice place to stay, great breakfast, within walking distance to most main attractions
- Luisa (8/5): - It was a very cozy place to stay at . I had stomach issues first 2 days of being there so i didnt really do everything i wanted to. But many things to do walking distance and ubers are a life saver. For nightlife its a 10 min walk and for bars as well. Shopping area is around 15 to 20 mins and there is a lot of store in the shopping area. The breakfast at the hotel was pretty decent im not a breakfast person . The staff were very respectful and sweet and greeted everyone. I dont know if the rooms were supposed to have ac but it was hot in my room i had to turn the ceiling fan on which was kind of loud. But the bathrooms and rooms itself were clean and they asked everyday if i wanted cleaning services.
- Elva (10/5): - It is close to restaurants and some museums
- Justin (10/5): - Property has lots of art, restaurant, and sitting places. Close and walkable to downtown
- Elva (10/5): - Beautiful lounges and decorations and a tasty breakfast
- Ellen (10/5): - Absolutely loved it! Beautiful building and art everywhere. All the staff were so kind and helpful. My room was very comfortable. Breakfast was such a treat and the restaurant food was soo delicious also would recommend a dinner there!
- Nathan (10/5): - It was a lovely hotel with extremely helpful and friendly staff and a lot of charm. The area was walkable to museums, shopping, etc. And the breakfast was excellent. The only complaint was that it's easy to hear loud noises through the room walls.
- Britny (4/5): - I truthfully feel sorry writing a bad review as I never do this- but really, not even a fan?? I almost can understand no air conditioning, but not even a single fan in the room?!?! and if you open the screenless windows straight to the lobby you can for one hear everything (almost doesn't matter as you still could with the window closed) and also be eaten by mosquitoes and allow a variety of other creatures into your room. But even though we only opened the windows briefly, there was still a massive cockroach in the bathroom. Just for laughs I will mention the TV barley worked, the safe did not work at all, and we were literally electrocuted by the light-switch. This may have ALL been forgiven if there was just one single fan.....
staff was nice, area felt decent, and my car was accommodated without hassle however parking spaces very limited.
This was the worst hotel I have ever stayed at. Sorry, but really.
- Nicole (8/5): - Loved the plants every where's. Breakfast was amazing as well. The staff were phenomenal! I was expecting the room to be a little bigger but it ended up not being an issue. If I return to San Jose, this will always remain an option for us!
- Ian (10/5): - A great hotel in a not so great location (I guess most of San Jose is not so great)
- Martha (6/5): - Delicious Breakfast
- Chelsea (4/5): - The location was nice for walking to lunch in the city and was close to museums. The other reviews definitely give you an unrealistic picture of what you’re getting from the hotel. It is a small property without air conditioning. The beds are rock hard and the shower/bathroom setup isn’t ideal as they are located together with no barrier so the toilet area gets very wet and is a hazard since they do not provide a towel for the ground. Luckily we went on an excursion that took up the whole day so we only really used the room to sleep but take the marvelous reviews with a grain of salt.
- Lequita (10/5): Loved it! - The place was very unique. The room was comfortable and updated. The price was very inexpensive. The breakfast was worth the price in itself. The staff was very knowledgeable about areas around there for food and airport info.
- tom (8/5): - Hotel was :20 min fm San Jose airport. Good location in downtown San Jose. Close to many restaurants & mini marts. Hotel rooms small and outdated, very basic, no frills. Free bfast was good. IMO overpriced at $70. Should be $45 at most.
- Christopher (10/5): Amazing - This hotel is amazing!! The rooms are spotless and very comfortable. The decor is delightful. Highly recommend this hotel.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - A very cute hotel with lots of nostalgia. The staff was great with assistance, especially with parking.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - I love this hotel. Everything about it is unique. Very comfortable. Friendly and helpful staff. The only thing is I could get no hot water for my morning shower. Not even warm
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Beautiful hotel, great breakfast, very nice personnel, clean and very nice location with artistic flare.
Lots of interesting guests just an awesome experience. Thank you
- Verified traveler (10/5): - It is extremely unique. Beautiful old building. Simple rooms but comfortable
- Lynlee (10/5): Loaded with character - Hotel absolutely loaded with character and charm. Staff extremely helpful and kind when the airline lost my luggage. Good location close to restaurants. Hot shower with good pressure. Great breakfast with breakfast room in a jungle type setting with a visiting squirrel. Loved the bright, colourful quirky artwork.
- Cesar (10/5): - Nice little hotel. Rooms were clean and well kept. Nicely decorated buffet breakfast where the chef will prepare you an omelet to you specifications. And enjoy your meal In a lush tropical setting where squirrels will come down from the trees to greet you
Next door is a dinner experience you have to try. But remember, you have to make reservations early through the hotel. Because space is very limit each night
- Verified traveler (10/5): - A bit noisy but really cozy. Also, the neighborhood is beautiful
- Sonia (10/5): - Lovely stay, amazing breakfast, comfortable room, gracious desk host. PM restaurant service was disappointing---we were told to make a reservation, which we did, but then had to wait 45 minutes for a table. But the waiter comped us our drinks in exchange, which was kind.
- Jenny (10/5): - Property was a great first stop for our trip to Costa Rica. We arrived kind of late in the night from the airport and the staff was very accommodating and quick to get us into our room and help us find food. The restaurant next to the hotel is very delicious and was an excellent first meal in Costa Rica. The following morning we got to see the hotel in daylight and it was everythi property was a great first stop for our trip to Costa Rica. The restaurant next to the hotel is very delicious and was an excellent first meal in Costa Rica. The following morning we got to see the hotel in daylight and it was even better than expected. The breakfast area is open to a large portion of trees and makes you feel like you’re having a little jungle breakfast. Staff was very nice and helpful and the food was very good
- Gary (10/5): Excellent breakfast and great service - Arrived late at night and area seemed very unwelcoming, however I was to quick to judge and the next morning revealed a please t neighbour hood near to a park and the national museum. Hotel service was excellent and the rooms were basic but adequate with good WiFi. Breakfast was the highlight!!!! I could not fault it. Huge spread and so delicious
- Nancy (8/5): Quirky and great. - Beautiful place. Plants, artworks, and great service. We loved our stay. Within walking distance to several nice restaurants. Breakfast was one of the best ever.
Several sitting areas in gardens throughout the main property.
Our room was not so private.
We would stay here again.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Restaurant is amazing but the hotel is not so good - Great breakfast and the restaurant that is part of the hotel is incredible. Its the best bit in my opinion and I would return to the restaurant even if I stayed in a different hotel.
The rooms are very dated and I had 1-inch gap between the top of the door and door frame so it didn't feel particularly private or secure.
I stayed two times in two different rooms but both were noisy. Any guests arriving late or leaving early can easily be heard.
The worst bit was there a semi-transparent skylight above the bathroom. The staff walk on the roof to access an area to dry towels and my girlfriend was on the toilet when someone was walking across the roof and she could easily see the person so had he looked down he could probably have seen what was going on below!! The noise of the person on the roof was also very loud.
- Nicole (6/5): - The hotel is clean and an oasis in the middle of the capital city. The old architecture makes the hotel very unique and charming. The free breakfast was tasty. The cons: on the weekend, street traffic and constant car alarms are very loud - almost like sleeping on a verandah. The beds were not the most comfortable, and I literally froze at night as the temperatures drops; there is significant wind draft through the window panes. I had to buy warm sleeping clothes. The blankets were basically throws - they did not keep me warm. Outside of breakfast and dinner times, it is not possible to make or purchase a cup of coffee or tea. You will have to visit a local cafe. I would only recommend this hotel for an overnight stay - two nights top.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Give this place a minute past first impressions. It's quirky design takes some getting used to, but it grows on you. The breakfast buffet is unmatched in Costa Rica. This place is a great value.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We had a wonderful stay! The hotel is just minutes away from San Jose's centre (and all its top cultural sites) but it feels like an oasis - peaceful, lush. Great staff at the front desk, they were super helpful with setting up tours and recommending restaurants. Buffet breakfast was lovely and set in a bit of a garden - we were excited to see hummingbirds on our very first morning in Costa Rica!
- RichardandCathy (10/5): - Wonderful value and restaurant is excellent! Dinner 6 to 9 make a reservation and enjoy!
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Although it has its merits, the room walls are super thin and you can hear everything people are saying particularly if you have one of the rooms off of the court yard. Forget about trying to sleep if people are there talking. I would choose a different hotel next time.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great stop over in San Jose and wonderful breakfast buffet
- Sally (10/5): - It's has a nice outdoor sitting area. I love the bathroom with it's sun roof. The bed is so comfortable with many pillows. It's has a homely feeling. There's lemon water 24/7. Staff are so friendly and always smiling. I would stay here again and recommend my friends to stay here!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Small, quaint, good location, friendly staff, nice breakfast
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The property has lots of interesting character. Breakfast was very good, and nice location. You can order eggs, etc. to your specification. The neighbourhood was quite ok; and really a short walk to city centre. Staff at the front desk was helpful, and spoke English. I arrived later in the evening, and someone was available at the front desk.
I liked my room, but found that during the week evenings, you could hear the local train (horns and other noise) until maybe about 10:00 pm.
I think it depends where your room is located. Overall, though, I would recommend this hotel.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - This is definitely unique and gives you a sense of the way the houses were built in that era. I especially liked the little courtyards and cubby holes with gardens. Also the location was perfect for walking and getting a sense of life in the city.
- Devon (10/5): Five star - Quick night stay here after traveling all day from Bocos Del Toro. Quick check in. Easy to find. Extremely friendly/helpful/patient/knowledgeable staff. Blocks away from central downtown.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This is a historical, incredibly unique property. The staff is phenomenally helpful and accommodating, Francisco is a jewel!
The breakfasts are the best, better than in any place I have visited.
- JENNIFER (8/5): Great price for the stay and friendly staff - Stayed at the annex building - clean and spacious room and bathroom, great view from the bedroom and hallway outside. Building felt safe. Free wifi.
Friendly staff. Great breakfast on the patio on the main building. The main building has great ambience with the old designs and artwork and greenery.
Con: The annex building hallway looks poorly maintained. My room has one wall that had frosted glass french doors (it was locked) but has no curtains - it was uncomfortable as the sun rose early and and brightens the room from the hallway light (which I turned off) and outside lights at night.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - We got booted into the annex building (across the street and Down the road a bit) which wasn't the best. I think it would have been better if we we're able to stay in the main building. The breakfast terrace is nice, staff was generally ok.
