Guest Reviews
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Lovely private Bush setting with sea views. Enjoyed surprise visit from the pet dogs and goat
- AndreBMoore (10/5): Absolutely beyond awesome Fern Lodge in Coromandel - What a experience which has made the visit to the Coromandel a very enjoyable and memorable and made me full in love with everything here. The eonderful Geneviere the hostess accomodated my boys and me on very short notice and even allowed us to observe Honey extracting, made awesome suggestions and is very knowledgeable of the local amenities and great places to eat out. The 2 bedroom Chalet upstairs had all the amenities, beautiful made beds (ultra cleaned and serviced via Hygienitech) great water pressure, secluded and surrounded by nature, what a beautiful and amazing place. Highly recommend! Will be back for sure. Just have fallen in love.
Thank you so very much Fern Lodge
- lovelylablilove (10/5): Superb Lodge - Gen was very hospitable and so are her dogs and goat! We stayed in the garden suite with our 2 little dogs and the space was more than enough for us! When we arrived, the suite was spotless and the beds are so comfy! I really loved the fact that it was a pet friendly accommodation.
- Robyn (8/5): - The only downsides of the property was a garden light that shone very brightly all night directly into the room ,even with the curtains shut. The light interfered with sleeping.
otherwise really liked the accommodation and its location
- ChristineM146 (10/5): Too short! - Stayed for one night in the Garden Suite with my 2 GSDs. It's sooo nice to find somewhere that not only accepts these big dogs but is more than happy to do so. Lovely large room with comfortable bed, nice amenities and accommodating hosts.
Thanks guys. We had a fabulous stay. We'll be back.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - So quiet and peaceful. Lovely bush setting.came complete with visiting dog, Jessie who was very nice natured.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Quiet and peaceful. Lots of room and well stocked kitchen, all u need for a great stay
- Aurelie (10/5): Chalet magnifique - Séjour dans un magnifique chalet enrouré d'une forêt au calme. Il y avait tout le nécessaire a l'intérieur, même des jeux pour les enfants. L'hôte a vraiment été tres gentil.
- Colin (10/5): - Very pleasant stay in garden studio apartment with everything we needed in the town of Coromandel. The host was lovely and the friendly dogs were a bonus.
- JanecsOxford_England (10/5): Gorgeous place - We stayed in the garden studio and it hugely exceeded expectations. The place is beautiful with very good facilities, and is extremely spacious. The electric blanket was great, as we had cool damp weather. Would have liked to stay longer, but so much to see and do!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Nice quiet and cosy place, big room. Entramce driveway narrow for big SUV though, but can be driven through.
- Amarjeet (10/5): - The self contained property is very well equipped, tastefully designed, spacious, and feels like dreamworld.
- Luvinspoonful (10/5): Family friendly fun - We booked the 2 level 3 bedroom chalet and enjoyed a fun packed weekend in the coromandel.
Spotlessly clean with good supplies (including cooking oils, personals and paper towels), all of the bedding is in very good order with comfy couches in a lounge upstairs separating the kids from the adults (Netflix available too).
This is not walking distance in to the town ship unless you enjoy a very steep incline upon your return but is very close to the Coromandel Railway (turn right) and the Waterworks (turn left) which are entertaining for young and old.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Good location, very clean and comfy beds! We enjoyed our stay.
- john (10/5): Quiet and cool. - Sweet spot back in the flora. Very nice people and comfy, funky accommodation. Could easily spend a week or two here just chilling out.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Fantastic place to stay and explore the Coromandel, like a home from home
- Verified traveler (8/5): - This is a lovely place to stay. Unique in concept with all sorts of quirky features. Don't go expecting the ordinary - this place has a delightful character all of its own.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Gen’s space is beautiful and rustic, and Gen herself is lovely. The garden room I stayed in was gorgeous, light and spacious. Defs has a feeling that you are immersed in the bush.
- Louise313 (10/5): We love this place! - This was our third stay here over the past ten years—we always return to Coromandel Town because of the charm and location of these cottages. Slightly rustic in appearance but modern in every other way, our cottage was comfortable, clean, affordable, peaceful, and surrounded by an abundance of plant life. Evenings on the deck with a glass of wine were memorable,
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Nice peaceful location, nobody else around.
Lovely facilities.
Just easy chairs not comfortable.
- N (10/5): - Such lovely, hospitable owners. Would definitely come back!
- Bel (10/5): - Cute little house in the middle of nowhere. Accidentally left an item behind and arrangements were made to have it returned to us. Sad we didn’t get to stay longer.
- Clive (10/5): Charming option nestled into Coromandel's hillside - Charming small cottage/chalet in among the trees and ferns on Coromandel's hillside. Very quiet and private location. Accomodation was light and airy, decorated in a French provincial style. Reasonable sized kitchen area. Been recently redecorated so very neat and clean. Think b'n'b retreat rather than hotel/motel and you'll get what Ferntree Lodge offers. About 1.5km from Coromandel's eateries. Couldn't get the phone by the reception office to work to call the host on my arrival but once I called via mobile phone, the host soon appeared and got me organised. Was only there one night but could have happily stayed for days on end. Great spot for a couple to have a quiet break.
- Kathleen (8/5): - Beautiful position walking distance from the Main Street.
great friendly and responsible owner.
Everything in the cottage was clean and comfortable. The bed was a good a night sleep as home.
Very large space would suit a family get away, (or even two smaller family’s in the one cottage).
For us there was just the two us and it was a perfect romantic getaway.
Quiet, peaceful, beautiful, we loved every min. The only negative I could think of is it’s probably not the place if you get hay fever or are allergic to bees, but then that’s the whole peninsula.
I hope you enjoy your stay as much as we did ours.
- dogswig (10/5): Our favourite place we stayed in all of NZ - just stunning - We stayed in the studio flat which was impeccable in a beautiful setting. I could happily move in there, it was just idyllic. The room had all the amenities you could wish for - with very comfy beds - a nice lounge area, well stocked kitchen and a lovely (spotless) bathroom. It was more like having a wee home away from home and we regretted not staying longer. Gen and her Dad Ray are lovely people and just made us feel so welcome. There is a lovely outside area with a bbq and plenty of space for entertaining if you wished to have visitors (I had family in the area so this was a bonus). Being an animal lover I enjoyed their friendly dogs and the pet goat. Waking up to the birdsong in the native bush was magical. It's only a short walk into town. There is a pub on the way into town (The Coromandel Hotel, I think) which does great food - be warned HUGE portions. We had a steak sandwich and kumara chips and it was more than enough for two of us. I thoroughly recommend Fern Lodge and would go back in a heartbeat!
- ArtJohnstone (10/5): Great facilities in a homely setting. - I have been to Fern lodge for a number of years but this time it had been upgraded in the range of facilities offered. It felt more like a hotel than motel but with rustic charm still. Our room was comfortable and clean but deep in the garden so we felt we were away from it all.We came back relaxed.
- BedfordBarbara (10/5): Perfect hideaway - Loved the relaxed feel of this eco hideaway and the friendly owners. Tucked away in the bush, but walking distance to Coromandel Town. We found the cottage well equipped for all our needs- very comfortable bed, kitchenette, bathroom with shower, eco toiletries, hairdryer etc. Peaceful and secluded, quiet and comfortable-just what we needed!
- G871TUandrewc (10/5): Amazing and tranquil accommodation - My wife and I recently stayed at Fern Lodge. We received a very warm welcome from Ray who was both knowledgeable and enthusiastic about Coromandel and New Zealand in general.
We were particularly struck by the personalised, written welcome sign on arrival.
Ray provided some amazing advice and historical information about Coromandel and New Zealand in general. In particular, we took him up on his recommendation to visit a local quaint railway. It turned out to be an amazing trip and well worth the visit.
Our room was set against the backdrop of beautiful forestry which added to the atmosphere of peace and tranquility.
The room was tastefully designed and included all amenities that one would expect during a vacation.
It was clear that a lot of attention to detail was taken into consideration when designing the rooms. What was also clear during out visit was the owner's commitment to an eco-friendly approach, which was a core principle at the very heart of the business.
We have travelled extensively over the years and this is one of the most memorable accommodations we have stayed at.
Our only regret is that we did not spend more time in Coromandel and in particular, at Fern Lodge.
- jokejulia (8/5): Great quirky home stay - Absolutely loved this home stay, the owners were very friendly and chatty. Room was clean, bright, large and airy. It had 2 beds, 1 king or queen and 1 single bed. Overall a great place to stay if you are looking for something different, something else rather "typical" hotel set up. It had full kitchen facilities too (although it does need a bit of a refresh), we were able to make our own breakfast. Definitely recommend this place :)
- haroonk371 (10/5): A peaceful respite - It was an opportunity of a lifetime - I travel a lot for work but never to New Zealand. When a business trip brought me to Auckland, I knew I was going to make the best of it and explore the country. I had only the briefest of stays at Fern Lodge (arrived 6pm and left 7am), but knew immediately this would be a place to come back and relax more. From the kindest personal welcome-sign in the driveway, to an extremely homely, spacious, impeccable room made entirely from pines grown on the property by the owner. Oh, did I mention the electric mattress pad - my first time!
But I will remember it most for the proprietor, Mr. Ray (?), Genevieve's father. A delightful personality with a contagious passion for all nature that surrounded him. He was adamant that the Coromandel coastline was perhaps the most beautiful in the world ... and wait till I drove to Colville in the morning! He explained he moved to NZ 47 years ago from Manchester, UK, and found paradise. Indeed, after my drive to Colville and hike along the Coastal Walkway at the very tip of the peninsula, I thought Ray might be on to something ...
Fern Lodge and the countryside around it is highly recommended!
- Fosie (10/5): A joy to stay - even the dogs welcome you! - We have stayed in many places and this is definitely a good one. We had the light, airy and spacious Studio, it is equipped with everything you might need and was very comfortable and clean. The owners were very welcoming, lending us beach towels and spades (you need them at Hot Water beach). The nice thing was that there was coffee and milk in the kitchen, so you could make several cups of coffee if you wanted, things weren't doled out, which was nice. We also enjoyed the dogs who came to say hello.
- 177leslieg (10/5): Our favorite place!! - This cute little cottage was surrounded by amazing flowers and fern trees! Great fresh air as we could open the doors all evening. Fantastic restaurant with huge green mussels, the softest calamari I've ever had, and oysters!! Just terrific! Ecologically minded and completely surrounded by crocosmia, allium, fennel, and ginger! They consider them weeds! For a gardener, it's heaven!
- NatC326 (10/5): Both stays were wonderful - I have stayed in the Treehouse for two trips now and have loved it both times. Genevieve and her father are wonderful to chat with, knowledgable about the area, and both were so kind. The house itself is charming and had everything we needed. Genevieve was also very generous during our first stay by letting us use her office the afternoon after we checked out, to quickly book a new flight to Christchurch when our original flight was unexpectedly canceled. I would highly recommend this house to others and would gladly stay here again :)
- Tuxie2012 (10/5): Peaceful, charming & and great birdsong - We stayed for two nights earlier this year in the Garden Studio - during the winter, but it was very mild and so we had doors & windows open most of the time and were able to sit outside with an evening drink. It's right behind the main house but is very private and faces out onto the peaceful garden.
The studio is well equipped and very spacious, and it is a short walk to town which has lots of good places to eat & drink. Lovely walking nearby too. A warm welcome, friendly dogs, comfy bed and all the gloriousness of the Coromandel nearby. Highly recommended. I wish I could have stayed longer and would love to go back next time I am in the area.
- richardfP8835PD (8/5): Our first choice in Old Coromandel Town - Eco-friendly lodges (choice of three units) hidden in the bush far enough from the road to be quiet yet close enough to be able to walk into town. Lovely helpful owners, Gen & James have lived in on the property for years and know all the best places. Have stayed there three times now, and are shortly to book again; wouldn't want to stay anywhere else in Coromandel Town.
- 977SusanneM (8/5): Captures the essential Coromandel - This is the Coromandel and so one expects to encounter native bush, eco-friendly houses and equally friendly craftspeople such as potters or artists. Fern Lodge meets all these expectations, on the northern edge of Coromandel town, down a bush-fringed driveway. The studio we occupied was well-equipped and had some eco-friendly touches -- among them: no nasty chemical cleaning smells, soap that benefits the Forest and Bird Society and a receptacle for food scraps for compost. The studio was clean, light and pleasant with a balcony looking out into the fruit trees. I had only one quibble -- uncomfortable armchairs that are probably just fine for the young and agile but not so easy otherwise. The owners are charming and most obliging.
- MarcM3874 (10/5): Mid year anniversary away - Wow where does one start. Peaceful relaxing quant. The owners are beautiful friendly charming hosts tucked in bush surroundings and you think you are the only ones here. I would have trouble staying anywhere different. Ray is a interesting character and we'll know in the town and boy dies he love his town. Ask him anything and he will know or find out for you !
- 60cheriek (10/5): Just lovely. - Lovely location and fabulous accommodation. Really well appointed with every thing that you would need. Warm and cosy and we were visiting at a very rainy time.
Very Comfy beds. Great Place to stay and relax. Great deck to enjoy the view.
Thank you.
