Guest Reviews
- Kim (4/5): Basic accommodation.. not likely to return - Internally clean generally .. except bathroom Weeds on driveway were head high , weeds at entry ..front and back not mowed for weeks .. back yard was unusable .. not a good first impression ... no milk or chopping board ... expected a dishwasher.. considered a standard item like other properties we stayed in... bathroom .. no hair conditioner provided and shower dripped through night
- Giddings (7/5): Brief but nice -
- Brett (10/5): - Good instructions, easy to access. Well appointed.
- June (8/5): I found this property adequate for my circumstances - location and easy access i prefer a walk in shower

- Emma (10/5): Serene, comfy cottage with the lot - great for the doggies too! - Perfectly located, a 10 minute stroll into the delightful town of Penola. The cottage itself is beautifully appointed, with open living and kitchen area. And importantly a fenced in, grassed area for the doggies to run around. The garden is simple and lovely. We visited in the winter, so did not take advantage of the great outdoor dining/bbq set up. The heating is very effective so we were very snug and warm. The bed is super comfy. Overall, a fabulous stay.
- Merce (8/5): -
- Lisa (7/5): Good - It was a nice place within walking distance to the main street. The beds were very comfortable. The house wasn't ready when we arrived. It was almost 3pm when we arrived and check in was 2pm. There were a lot of spider webs inside the house.
When we read the ad, it stated that the booking was for the entire two bedroom house. Once we booked and received the official confirmation email we were then informed that if we were to use the second bedroom, we had to pay an extra $50 for a cleaning fee. We thought that this was misleading and this should be explained in the original ad information.
- Benjamin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lorraine (7/5): Good -
- Trudie (8/5): Very good -
- Kathryn (9/5): Lovely stay for a night stopover on way to Adelaide. - Good location. Easy walk to Main Street.
Cost & well stocked. Nothing really
- Campbell (7/5): Good -
- Chris (8/5): Very good - Difficult . The keys were not where we were advised in the e mail . Quite frustrating ! See Above !!
- Joshua (10/5): Great place - Everything was fantastic N/A
- Clare (7/5): It served our purpose, but cleanliness needs addressing - Very comfortable beds Glassware, plates and most crockery were not cleaned properly .. When we turned the oven on , the kitchen filled with smoke due to a very dirty greasy oven .
- Peter (3/5): Very disappointing with the accommodation overall. Was our most expensive and disappointing in SA - Place needed a good dusting and better cleaning.
Milk carton provided was opened and appears to be used by a previous resident.
Rodents may be a problem due to traps set - understandable in a country area but still unsightly.
- Keith (10/5): Exceptional -
- Michael (9/5): Superb -
- Diane (8/5): Very good -
- Belinda (7/5): Good - location was great and the backyard is enclosed for pets and a lovely place to sit outdoors. The beds are comfortable and kitchen well stocked. The shower over the spa bath is a little dangerous for those who are older or less steady on their feet. whilst there is a non-slip mat provided getting in and out of the shower is a challenge. I would advise a hand rail.
- Natalie (8/5): Very good -
- Bronwyn (8/5): Very good -
- Margaret (8/5): Very good - It was all good if slightly smaller than expected.
- Emma (10/5): Exceptional - They were very generous with tea/coffee and breakfast supplies. The place was lovely and clean The shower wasn't the best, but it worked which was good enough for us.
- Richard (2/5): Don't stay here - Leaving Wet laundry left in corridor greeted us on arrival. Place smelt mouldy. Small uncomfortable beds. Location in Bad end of town. Did not use bathroom, slippery tiles. Could not wait to get out of there.
Way too expensive for what it is.
- Catherine (7/5): Good - Breakfast provisions basic but adequate - nice not to have to go out and buy it
Being able to sit out in the backyard
Proximity to town house smelt a little musty
Milk provided not enough if all of us wanted cereal for breakfast. Enough for tea/coffee only.
Thought it odd that we were provided with half a 600ml carton of milk that had already been opened/used.
- Jess (9/5): Cute and cozy, what an enjoyable stay! - Small, cozy, pet friendly. Heaps of cool little extras for brekky. Beds super comfy Dark inside, not a lot of natural light.
- Peter (9/5): Superb - Pleasantly surprised to see breakfast supplied
- Ivan (7/5): Good -
- Simon (8/5): Very good - Cosy and warm Cobwebs and ants
- Douglas (3/5): Disappointing - The location, and a breakfast of cereals, bread and jams, teas and coffee was supplied along with fresh milk. When we arrived the soiled bedding from previous guests was in a pile on the hallway floor - the owner(?) came in shortly after apologetic and removed them - however a negative tone was set. The cottage was cramped, faded, cold, dark and in need of a thorough clean. Ants on the kitchen benches and webs and spiders on the ceilings.
- Colin (4/5): I would not recommend - Breakfast provisions are generous They’re were ants on the kitchen benches.
The tile grout around the spa bath was very dirty and required deep cleaning.
The neighbours dogs in number 37 wouldn’t stop barking.
The rooms are incredibly small.
The extra blankets were stained (unhygienic).
- Jacqui (8/5): Enjoyable and relaxing. - Little extra touches, supplies in the fridge and pantry etc. We travel with our dog and it was very dog friendly and safe for them. Very cosy and comfortable and such a good location. The neighbourhood dogs were not very welcoming. There were dogs in all three neighbouring houses and they all barked both at each other and us every time we moved around.
- Belinda (9/5): Superb -
- Paul (8/5): I summary we will stay again. - The breakfast supplies were excellent. We enjoyed using the bbq and sitting outside. Most of what Penola has to offer is within a 15-20 minute walk. We needed instructions on how to use the appliances etc.
- Jessica (10/5): Exceptional -
- Wayne (2/5): We liked it, just needs a little more care and attention to detail. - Ease of booking and access. Nice bed. Chipper cup in kitchen, mouldy loaf of bread, ants in shower, unkempt garden.
- Donna (7/5): Good -
- Therese (8/5): Very good -
- Sherri (10/5): A very cute little cottage fitted out with everything you need, nestled in the heart of Penola. - Everything you need, plentiful breakfast, clean and tidy. Good back yard, great location, close to the Main Street. All good
- Rodger (8/5): Very good -
- Graeme (4/5): Disappointing - the cottage was not clean.
it was a bit dated aswell
- Laetitia (10/5): Comfortable, quiet, home away from home 🏡 - Lovely little cottage with everything one could need. A home away from home. Walking distance into town. Quiet surroundings. Will definitely be staying again…. actually we are staying again on our trip back to Melbourne 😊 Nothing 😊
- April (1/5): Worst accommodation we have ever stayed in! DO NOT RENT! - Location as it is close to main town of Penola 1) Dirty and was not cleaned when we got there! Previous tenants’ rubbish, used towels and dirty sheets. We had to raid the linen cupboard to put clean sheets on the beds to sleep.
2) Bathroom was dirty and none of us used the showers because it was not cleaned.
3) Cleaner came after I complained but we already arrived at 4:30pm. She took out rubbish and gave new towels. However, the place made my skin crawl and we just wanted to leave. Thank god it was only for one night enroute to home!
- Janet (9/5): Beautiful cottage, secure yard for dog, near bike trail - Location next to Coonawarra Bike Trail
Lovely big enclosed yard for dog
- Paul (8/5): We only had 2 people stay instead of 3 - Extra pillows Nothing
- Margaret (7/5): Good - Convenience, nice back garden, nice patio area,. Tricky hot water system. Could have been cleaner.
- Yong (6/5): not too bad. - clean We had water quality problem and used bottled water for cooking. We didn't even not take shower.
- Amielee (8/5): Very good -
- Ian (8/5): Really happy with the location. Quaint cottage and convenient to walk into town - Great range of food for breakfast. Convenient location. Homely. Beds a little small but they were comfortable
- Jennifer (8/5): Very good -
- Trish (8/5): Great stay would stay there again. - Great location, great facilities, comfortable great backyard and fully equipped. Poor instructions on how to open property. Old pin for door mainly due to not updated details.
- Simon (8/5): Very good -
- Haylee (6/5): Pleasant - cute cottage location
- Read (5/5): Location was why we chose Ruby's Cottage. It was adequate but needs to crank it up a notch. - We did appreciate the fruit & nuts delivered for the gluten intolerant guest. Appreciated the coffee machine. Beds were very comfortable & the heating was good. Thanks to Ann who orchestrated getting the hot water fixed. When we arrived the unmowed lawn & mature daddy long legs spiders & webs in 4 of the rooms set the tone that we didn't feel safe using the spa. The breakfast tray of sachets of cereal was very unappealing. The gas ran out for the hot water & we couldn't have showers. Decor very tired & outdated.
- Adam (3/5): Poor - Generous host with food and amenities available. Everpresent stench of cheap air freshener to mask stale smoke was a killer.
- Debra (7/5): Good -
- Susan (7/5): Comfortable, well located cottage adequate for 4 people. - Supplied breakfast supplies were ok for a continental breakfast, but the porridge was out of date (tasted fine, though) and the bread, whilst fresh was just a white commercial loaf. Generous with the coffee pods:) A fire pit would have been a great addition. The bathroom is pretty slippery. There is a non slip mat for the bath/spa but someone slipped just stepping backwards from the vanity.
- Gordon (8/5): Very good -
- Ryan (8/5): Very good -
- Thomas (9/5): Superb -
- Pauline (8/5): Very good -
- Philippa (10/5): Pretty Cottage very well appointed - excellent welcome package, pretty cottage nothing
- Carolyn (10/5): Very comfortable stay and we'll come back to Ruby's Cottage another time we visit Penola. - We only used some of the plentiful continental breakfast, but great to find milk!
Quiet air con in every room. So easy to get into the little town.
Bed were comfy and windows with fly wire opened.
Great washing machine! Shower above the spa bath needed a rail to help older guests climb in.
That was the only negative.
- Hollamby (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tracey (9/5): Superb -
- Dalton (9/5): Superb -
- Rosa (5/5): If would be good if there were two singe beds which would suits people who needs a bit more of own spaces. it is not goo - It was ok, very close to the centre. It is very pricey compared with the space. It’s quite noisy although it is not in the town centre.
- Joanne (5/5): Passable - The staff were good to contact us when we left an item behind. Breakfast supplies were excellent. The rooms were small and compared to other accomodation was expensive
- Carol (10/5): Exceptional - A cosy cottage in a central location with everything you could want. Thoughtful hosts.
- Richard (9/5): Superb -
- Paula (9/5): Chatming without compromise - Cottage charm with modern ammenities. Generously supplied with breakfast/tea/coffee. Great location. no downside
- Liliana (10/5): Beautiful little cozy cottage. Great alfresco area for evening platters and wine. The scent of Jasmine made it perfect. - Compact, but very cute, clean and very well equipped. There was nothing that I didn’t like.
- Marija (10/5): Exceptional - So nice, and cosy. Feel like a home Everything was perfect
- Terry (8/5): Very good -
- Lorraine (9/5): A delightful place to spend four days accessing a wonderful part of South Australia - The house was well appointed and generously provisioned. Everything was spotless and the décor homely and welcoming without being twee. Having a garden and outdoor eating area was a bonus. An impeccable small property. We liked it all and will communicate a few gentle suggestions direct to owner but they are not criticisms.
- Jacqueline (7/5): in comparison with other places we have stayed, it was more expensive and the quality not as high. - the bed was comfortable
the kitchen was ok to cook in the rangehood didn’t work.
had to step into the spar bath to shower.
the lounge area a little small
- Anonymous (7/5): Good -
- Louise (10/5): Thoroughky enjoyable stay in a comfortable cute cottage. - Very easy to find and comfortable
and clean. could be slippery stepping out of shower on to step.
- Peter (8/5): Very good -
- RosemaryGould (2/5): - This was an extremely disappointing property. It was rundown, outdated, (unnecessary clutter everywhere), unclean and in poor condition, inside and out. The cleanliness of the kitchen, with musty cupboards, dirty dishcloths, unclean cutlery and filthy fridge and BBQ was a disgrace. The precarious shower over the bath was an extreme safety issue and should be addressed with at least one safety rail. Considering we were quoted, via email $330.00 for two nights and then charged $444.00, for the two nights, added further grist for our very unhappy stay. The entire property needs a significant update with modern facilities and appliances to bring it in line with similar industry standards.
- julie (8/5): - Was quite comfortable. Well stocked kitchen, comfortable beds. Information book needs updating,a bit more attention to detail would make this place even better.
- Darren (4/5): - Water tank ran dry on the first night of a 4 night stay, so pump broke and needed repair so no running water for a day. Offer of compensation (a couple of bottle wines to be dropped off) never arrived, nor did any further communication.
Ideal property for a couple, great town but left to find another option next time.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - very cosy cottage we were lucky to have all the roses in full bloom
