Guest Reviews
- Mark (10/5): - We had a wonderful three-night stay at the Black Beach Guesthouse. The self-check-in process was super easy, and we really appreciated the location in Þorlákshöfn — just about an hour from Reykjavík and the airport.
On our first night, we took a short walk to the local community recreation center, where a kind local recommended a nearby spot called Thai Sakhon. We gave it a try, and the food was great!
During our stay, we went on several day trips — to Diamond Beach (about 4.5 hours away), Vík (around 2 hours), and Selfoss (only 20 minutes). We usually got back late, but one night we discovered another great restaurant right next to Thai Sakhon called Super1pizza. We ended up chatting with a friendly local there who told us about life in Iceland — it was such a nice, unexpected highlight of our trip.
The area around the guesthouse felt safe and welcoming, even though it’s in a slightly industrial part of town. Þorlákshöfn itself is quiet but easy to walk around. We loved spotting Icelandic horses near the water by the local church (about a 10-minute walk from the guesthouse), and the Krónan grocery store just a few minutes away was super convenient.
Our room was simple, clean, and comfortable — exactly what we needed after long days of exploring. The guesthouse only provides soap (no shampoo) and doesn’t have a common area or lobby, but that’s typical for guesthouses and didn’t bother us at all.
Overall, our stay was relaxing, comfortable, and a perfect base for exploring
- Helen (6/5): - We had problems with the door code ,it was very finicky. Problem with door was resolved quickly..cosy and clean room... nothing special
- Erla (8/5): - Parking, yes easily available.
- Cailin (10/5): - Great location for what we were doing
- Kaloian (10/5): - Great access
More shower supplies be great
- Cassie (10/5): - Loved the kettle. Very easy access and not difficult to find at all. Clean, good facilities, comfy bed.
- Bryce (10/5): Great stay - Great stay
- Darragh (6/5): - Check in was terrible. check in instructions were not provided and contacting the owner was impossible as a tourist with an eSIM. Mini fridge was not cleaned out from previous guests. Cleanliness needed improvement. Beds were very comfortable. Continent and affordable accommodation.
- Denise (10/5): - As stated in other reviews it is in an industrial area with not much in the area. We found a great family restaurant around the corner. Great place to stopover while doing the ring road
- Nicholas (8/5): - Very clean and comfortable property. It is however in an industrial estate which is slightly strange setting for a good property. 10 minutes aways is a lovely black sand beach howeve and it is a good location for exploring the peninsula
- Wynn (10/5): - In an industrial area of town, but nice place to stay. The building and room felt new, and everything was very clean & comfortable. The host was very responsive and friendly.
- Jill (10/5): - Comfortable bed, clean room and walkable to a great family friendly restaurant/bar.
- Kai (8/5): - The ventilation fan in bathroom can’t be turn off. At night, it is partially noisy. Called staff but solve it. It is clarified this is not required by local code. It should be the top priority in to do list for the owner.
- Judith (10/5): - The room itself was lovely! It was a good size with a private bathroom! Location-wise, it was a bit out of the way with very limited food/activity options. It was right next to an Orlando gas station which was convenient. We stayed here as a home based for the Golden Circle and it was a great location for our purposes! Parking was super easy and free as well:)
- Brandon (10/5): - The property owners communicated well with us, our stay was easy, the room was very clean and comfortable!
- Ellen (10/5): - Convenient location while traveling the southern region. Very clean. I felt very safe. Super comfortable beds.
- David (10/5): - The property itself was sparkling clean and modern, apparently recently built. Rooms are on the 2nd floor, so the elevator was a big plus had strong wifi service.
But, the area is largely an industrial seaport (though quiet) and the nearest "beach" is a mile away. There is no onsite staff, and they email you building entry instructions the morning of arrival. This is not a practical plan for travelers without local cell service.
- Thomas (6/5): - Good beds. Limited services in a mixed industrial, residential area
- Rachel (8/5): - Basic room with no staff and nothing much around!
- Creig (6/5): - A
- Brittany (10/5): - Great place if you’re looking for something in the area
- Victoria (10/5): - Gas station behind the building walking distance to get drinks and food
- Shelby (10/5): - The checkin is self service so be sure to check your email for how to get into the building as there is no receptionist. It was very easy to do though. We got to our room and it was clean and smelled very fresh. After spending the night we left and ran into the owner in the hallway. He was very friendly and helped us with our luggage. The Black Beach Guesthouse is a great choice. I would recommend anyone stay while in Iceland.
- kiran (2/5): - Did not like the service
- Gabriel (10/5): - Self check in was really easy, rooms were clean and comfortable. Two or three restaurants in easy walking distance, and a black sand beach about 5 minutes away. Friendly and helpful staff in the morning around checkout time.
- Aditya (10/5): - Very clean rooms and property. There was no staff onsite with self check in which was a breeze.
- Rumen (2/5): - Pros:
- room was clean
Cons:
- individual area
- self check in, no personnel
- small bathroom with small shoe size sink
- Joel (10/5): - Everything
- Zin (10/5): - The place is nice and clean
- Sheri (8/5): - Very nice
- Erin (10/5): - Clean, comfortable, very friendly staff.
- chengan (10/5): - Didn’t received door code by some reason
- Jennifer (10/5): - This is a beautiful little gem in a quiet location. The room was exactly like the picture, spacious, clean and comfortable. I was a little worried about the fact that there was no staff on site, however the staff responded quickly to my emails and provided great service. I was very impressed. Great work!
- Ericka (10/5): - Easy to get into the room. It was nice and clean, would stay again. We even saw the northern lights from our window.
- Chin Chin (10/5): - Simple and cozy place for a short stay.
- Nicholas (10/5): Great stay off the beaten path - Hotel was easy to find, clean, and clear instructions how to access the hotel and room. Room was perfect for family of 4 and enough room for everyone. I would stay again!
- Euain (6/5): - Checkin was a bit poor - the keypad on the door was not working properly and the phone number supplied was answered by someone who would not offer any help, just told us to send an email. We got in eventually after several attempts.
Property itself was fine - clean enough, warm, comfy. Not an awful lot in walking distance though it is well placed to access some some great attractions (lava tube, Litle Hrutur etc.).
- Michael (10/5): Black - Clean, modern
- marilyn (10/5): - We arrived much later than expected (too much to see and do along the way) and check went smoothly, the room was very clean and the beds oh so comfy. Great stay, thank you !
- Timothy (10/5): - Can’t say enough about how this property surprised me. Outside looked ok but interior was fantastic. Modern, clean great look. Quiet at night. Nice Cafe Bristol about a block away.
- Andrew (8/5): Nice place - Twas a nice place had comms glitch though (never got email or text with how to get in, they did respond quickly on FB messenger when were trying to figure out how to get in), so a little anxious at the beginning.
- Don (8/5): - The shower was built up about 15 inches above the floor and was extremely difficult to get out of with wet feet for fear of slipping.
- Lynne (10/5): - Room was spacious and comfortable. Big step up into the shower so it wouldn't be good for everyone but worked for us.
- Kortni (10/5): - Easy check in
- Erla Vilborg (10/5): - We liked everything about the hotel and the staff
- Jan-Willem van der (10/5): - Well maintained hotel in a quiet area
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great place! Check in was super easy and the room was really nice.
- Aidan (10/5): - Incredible place. For the price, the room I got was very clean, modern and nice. This place was actually 45-50 minutes out of the way of my plans, but after staying here I will go out of my way to stay here again if the prices remain the same. Cheers
- Kathleen (8/5): - best restaurant kitty corner to the hotel, where a wonderful host/cook told us about the region and made fantastic fish and chips!
- Patricia (10/5): - Nice overnight stopping point. Too bad we were there the night the local restaurant closed early.
- Catherine (10/5): Fantastic, clean stopover - Great stop over point. Clean facilities and great communication. Would stay again
- Amit (8/5): - Convenient stay, clean/basic room.
- katherine (10/5): Cozy and simple - Cozy modern spot. Comfy beds and easy access. Entire building was super clean. Step into shower is a bit awkward.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Easy access to Reykjanes peninsula - The hotel is less than an hour drive both to the active volcano site and the blue lagoon which were one of the reasons of choosing this hotel. It is more like an apartment but definitely value for money as it was much cheaper than other hotels we stayed in Iceland.
- Luca (10/5): - Room and common spaces were clean.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Room was fine, but no floor mat for bathroom. Shower area has no door or curtain so slick bsthroom floor quite slippery. Blackout curtains the same width as windowz so light spilled in all sides. Property has pictures of black beach, but is located in industrial area where warehouses block beach access.
- Robert (10/5): Great Stay - Easy convenient self check in. Clean and slept 4 easily.
Great restaurant nearby. stayed 2 days while in that part of the island.
- Erica P. (6/5): Okay for the price... but... - While, overall, the place is not bad for the price, the "open shower" idea leaves a lot to be desired. The shower stall did not drain water into the drain, plus the drain was somewhat clogged, resulting in a flooded bathroom floor that required using our towels to trap and mop up water. We could not reuse our towels after one use, and I almost fell on the wet floor the first night.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - A great little place in Þorlákshöfn! Modern, updated interior and the beds were very comfortable. The self-check-in was a breeze and, if you have questions or concerns the property manager is very quick to respond.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - I chose this hotel because of its proximity to the ocean. However I didn’t know that it was located in a small mixed industrial and residential neighborhood. There are not many establishments in the neighborhood, except that we found one nice cafe around the corner on the last day we checked out. There is no hotel front desk and checking in is through door passwords sent via emails. No one picks up the phone if you call but if you send an email asking for more towels towels might show up later. But throughout the time we were there, we saw no one in the facility. They probably were concerned with pandemic so changing how hospitality works. If you are just looking for a place to stay and shower, it will be perfect. Otherwise if you look to explore neighborhood, you will be disappointed.
- Americo (10/5): - This hotel was close to the beach and across from a phenomenal restaurant. Also very quiet.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Black beach 2 night stop - Easy check in even though no front desk; very comfortable bed and well maintained room; slightly on the small side for a couple; lovely cafe / restaurant 2 mins walk
- Fayy (10/5): Amazing views!!! - Beautiful accommodation! Very impressed. Will be returning!
- Dennis (8/5): Nice - It was a nice one night stay. Very clean room.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great value. Very clean, updated, and located close to a few restaurants, gas station and grocery store. A good alternative (and great value) to Reykjavík as a home base for south coast, blue lagoon, lava tunnel, and golden circle. Very efficient check in, low key and quiet place for sleeping after daily adventures
- Verified traveler (10/5): Nice rooms in a quiet location - A newly furbished set of rooms which were really nice. Location is quite far from the key attractions in and around Reykjavic, so only suitable for those with their own vehicles. Good quality WiFi.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Clean and comfortable. Convenient to Gullfoss and other Golden Circle sites.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The owners were so accommodating and the room was the loveliest of our 12 day trip!
- KT (10/5): - Black Beach Guesthouse in Þorlákshöfn was 45 minutes drive from Reykjavík. It is quiet, very clean (seemed very new) and comfortable. We could walk across the street to the ocean, grocery store, pharmacy, restaurants and wine shop. Behind the guesthouse was a gas station that serves meals and a ferry to Vestmannæyjar islands (take your car!). The property was 5 minutes drive from Black Beach.
The guesthouse is a 10- minute drive to the underground cave and 30 minutes from the Geothermal Energy Museum.
We were very pleased with the guesthouse and surrounding area and plan to stay at Black Beach Guesthouse again.

- Verified traveler (8/5): Awesome Access to southern Iceland 🇮🇸 - Very good guesthouse (no reception), for 2-3 night stay. No clothes washing facilities. Rooms cleaned every couple of days, and are very neat and modern. Clearly fitted within the last year or so. Free WiFi. Convenient store located nearby for water and snacks. Great access to the ‘southern Iceland’ region.
