Guest Reviews
- Susan (9/5): Perfect place to stay for exploring the region. - Very central location and great support from agent. Very warm and cosy cottage very well equipped. Nothing
- Nick (10/5): A quirky, charming, full of character and spotless. - Really wonderful welcome, coming into warm, lit rooms and the radio playing set the tone for our stay. The Easter eggs and biscuits and tea tray were a very generous touch. We felt very relaxed at The Oval on our Easter family holiday. The Oval is such a quirky, wonderful place to stay, everything thought of, and the little touches made our stay perfect. It’s in such a great location, close to the shops, pubs, eateries and castle. We spent a lovely afternoon walking around Dunster Castle and gardens, it is definitely worth a visit. We enjoyed the local walks. The Stag’s Head pub and Luttrell Arms are both welcoming and have great beer gardens. We have a thoroughly chilled, relaxed time in the cottage, cooking and playing games. Nothing is too much trouble for Lucy and she was always happy to help answer questions or sort things out for us. Thanks so much for a brilliant stay.
- Gemma (10/5): The perfect base to explore Dunster - We loved everything about the property. It’s full of charm. Wonky doorways, Wonky floors, Wonky ceilings… but in the best way. A few banged heads but no complaints from us! We had an issue with TV remote on day one and someone turned up with a new remote the next day. Responsive hosts. Lovely little details throughout. Lots to do - books, boxes and boxes of games, TV had Netflix and Disney. Parking is very close down the road. No issues day to day but we did have a few trips to unload the car so just bear in mind if bringing lots of stuff. On our departure we were lucky to find a space directly out the front to load.
Dunster is such a lovely unspoilt village. The lutterell arms did fabulous food. We ate there twice. We also had lunch at Tessa’s tea shop. All pubs, most cafes and most shops were dog friendly. Castle was closed for our trip but we walked around the ground and up to the tower on the opposite hill. Lovely walks a short drive to the forestry - tall trees at nutcombe bottom is impressive and easily extended into a big walk. We walked up to bats castle settlement with great views back down to Dunster and also did a few coastal walks down to Dunster from the oval (a nice loop in just under an hour), also parked up next to the old ship aground in minehead and walked up and around north hill and back to the pub for a nice dinner and then another walk further down the coast another day.
Our dog loved it. We loved it. I would stay again in a heartbeat.
- PaulKelly (10/5): A hidden gem in Dunster - Building's history, well maintained, well equipped, surprisingly spacious, clean and cosy. Car parking challenge
- David (10/5): -
- Helen (10/5): Great house in fabulous Dunster - Amazing old house- nothing is straight or on the same level and ceilings and doors are low- very comfortable and well equipped. Nothing
- Giles (10/5): -
- Natalie (10/5): Pretty , comfortable , medieval cottage with mod cons . A brilliant base to explore the local area - The cottage had everything we needed and more. I was very keen to use all the eco toiletries and they have been perfect. The four poster bed is beautiful and a joy to sleep in. Having such a well-stocked kitchen meant we could easily cook for four days and eat out for the rest. The off road parking spot was a double plus
- Alyssa (10/5): We would recommend The Oval without hesitation - The house definitely had the wow factor, full of history, quirky and yet had all mod cons. It was very clean, comfortable and within a short walking distance of amenities and places of interest. Everything had been thought of to make sure that guests enjoyed their stay.
The hosts provided milk, sugar, coffee, teabags and lovely chocolate biscuits, kitchen essentials,
toiletries and loo rolls in both bathrooms.
Plenty of information on the area was also provided.
Lucy and the team were always available if needed. Nothing to dislike
- Christopher (8/5): Very enjoyable week in lovely Dunster with excellent walking nearby. - Good water pressure and plenty of hot water
Well-equipped kitchen
Good supply of wood and kindling for the stove
Very responsive service from Lucy the owner. The bath was difficult to get in and out of: slippery and took too long to fill as the shower end was so deep
Poor lighting for reading in sitting room and main bedroom
- Maria (9/5): A magical stay at the Oval! - We are a half-German, half-Finnish family, and after our flight from Amsterdam to Bristol and a scenic drive to Dunster, we finally arrived at The Oval — and the place is incredible. From the very first moment, it felt like Gandalf arriving at Bilbo Baggins’ home in the Shire (though I promise I didn’t leave a mark on the door!).
The house is full of charm and thoughtful details that make it feel truly homely. You can tell that a lot of love and care went into creating this space — and it really makes all the difference. Even our teenage boys were genuinely impressed (!!)
We had a fantastic time exploring the area. The natural surroundings are stunning and incredibly diverse — whether it’s adventuring along the dramatic stony coastline of King Arthur’s legend, or walking / partly climbing 😢😉Fisherman’s Path in Dartmoor. The village Dunster is really worth to visit too.
All in all, we had a brilliant five-day trip through South UK staying in the Oval. A big thank you to the kind and caring team at The Oval! Some of my guys are >190cm. Their heads survived! So nothing to claim!😉
- Oliver (10/5): Very nice place to stay. - A very wonderful house which we thoroughly enjoyed during a gorgeous week of sunny weather. In spite of the GCSE revision and various work tasks, we enjoyed some of our favourite walks locally and over at Horner Wood with its pretty tearoom. The village is a lovely as we remembered and look forward to visiting the Castle today. We loved the garden terrace too – warm enough to sit out for hours at a time. We can’t wait to stay here again.
- Kateryna (10/5): Exceptional - The property was clean, perfectly situated and had complete amenities. N/A
- Rebecca (8/5): Very good - Beautiful, characterful, clean, great location and staff helpful and friendly. Very spacious and kitchen well stocked. Shower ensuite to four poster room a bit small. Smell of property rather musty but appreciate old. Patio off kitchen could be looked after better and prettier with flowers.
- Kevin (8/5): very good - small issues nothing major - location and space the dog barking outside during the middle of the night
- Sharon (9/5): Highly recommended, I hope to return. - Exceptionally clean
Everything you need e.g. towels, kitchen and starter stock
Great pre arrival communication Scraping the barrel here…
Be even more amazing if parking was on site or just outside (there is reserved parking a few steps away)
- Neil (10/5): Very relaxing and a good central place to allow you explore. - The history and uniqueness of it. The cleanliness. The well stocked kitchen. Shower, log fire, sun trap back yard.
- Carmel (10/5): Exceptional - Everything was more than perfect and the place had such a homely and peaceful feeling to it . The Cottage is Historically Beautiful with all the mod cons , luxury furnishings , eco friendly with the most comfortable Beds and Bedding .The gardens are picturesque and the perfect place to hear the Church Bells and Wildlife . Dunster is such a tranquil and picturesque village with lots to do for any Country Lover .
The hosts Lucy and Gail were warm and welcoming and nothing was to much to ask . They really made us feel at home and supported me and my family while we visited my brother in the local Hospice .
I am eternally grateful for their warmth and kindness and hope to return in the future . The property was more than perfect 🤩

- Russell (10/5): Wow, what an amazing place! When I walked through the door it took my breath away! I fell l in love and I didn’t want to - It’s Authentic charm Nothing really, although could do with 2 front door keys
- Lesley (8/5): Lovely cottage - Well equipped kitchen, comfortable beds, great location right on the main road, charming Small shower
- Michael (10/5): Lucy made us very welcome and provided touched beyond our expectation - exceptional property in a wonderful location nothing
- Stephen (9/5): Superb - The house was very clean, warm and comfortable with handy off road parking nearby. The town of Dunster is very nice. Dunster Castle is a highlight and there are plenty of places to visit nearby. A lot of steps inside along with low doorframes but to be expected in a property of that age. Mobile phone reception is very poor in Dunster.
