Guest Reviews
- Gavin (10/5): - One of a kind accommodation, friendly hosts and delicious breakfast. Perfectly situated 10 minutes walk from city centre but felt like you were in the middle of a quaint village! Cat was a bit aloof but it was a cat!!!
- Gillian (8/5): A lovely place to stay - home from home. - Really enjoyed our stay. Very friendly hosts and liked the accommodation very much. Only drawback was that the wifi connection in my room was unreliable but I think the hosts plan to get that fixed. Really enjoyed the cosy informality. Definitely plan to return.
- Timothy (10/5): A lovely stay - St John's an amazing house with a quirky interior and a beautiful garden. Our room was very clean and comfy and the shower excellent. The breakfast at the communal table provided an excellent conversation with the other guests and the breakfast was very good. There was parking for the car and the location is very central, thoroughly recommended.
- Janet (10/5): - Wonderful host. Very comfortable beds. Convenient short walk to center of Winchester. Highly recommend.
- Michael (10/5): - Excellent accommodation and Dotty is super friendly and serves a delicious breakfast!
- D A. C. (10/5): - An amazing house and gardens in a perfect location within walking distance of the town centre. Lovely owners and a good breakfast. We'd definitely recommend.
- Alison (10/5): - Welcoming owners , great cooked breakfast and easy check in and out.
- Jennifer (10/5): - We had a lovely stay here--the room and breakfast were both delightful and we enjoyed the gorgeous garden. We especially appreciated how kind and welcoming Dotty was. The perfect place to stay in Winchester!
- Jonathan (10/5): - Very relaxed, nice welcome with good breakfast.
- Judi (10/5): - Dottie was lovely and her guests are treated like family.
The surrounding area of Winchester is like a quintessential English Village.
- IAN (10/5): - Lovely property and host.
- Miriam (10/5): - This property is over 300 hundred years old! It is a treasure and has AMAZING character. Don’t expect ultra modern conveniences because owners are limited in what can be changed in historic properties, St John’s Croft is a quintessential old English home to be appreciated. Our room was bright and beds and linens were fluffy and cozy. Bathroom was two steps outside of our room. Five minute walk down the hill into Winchester. Nick and Dottie are wonderful hosts. Would stay here again.
- William (10/5): - The property is a bread and breakfast and family owned. The room was large and the bed comfortable. We were able to walk all around Winchester and see the sites while parking our car at the B&B. Very good breakfast.
- Jeanne (10/5): - Location was good. Property is charming. Breakfast was excellent.
- Andrey (10/5): - The hosts were very welcoming and accommodating. We enjoyed the gardens, the interior décor, the breakfast and the convenient location of the house.
- Michael (8/5): - A beautifull listed building and lovely gardens.
Only disappointment was no toilet in room, had own but down the landing.bath and sink in room….
Hosts were very nice.
- Pete (6/5): - Truly stunning property, rustic, wonderfully decorated with love. Spacious, good parking and central location. It won’t suit everybody. My room only had a bath, my private washroom was down a corridor which made my mid-sleep loo break awkward. Plus it was impractical. A working stay for me which meant I had to go out to work as the WiFi was so weak. Breakfast 8:30 or 9:30am didn’t work as I was gone by 7:45am, although a grab and go was offered instead. Being so old, noise from doors closing and floorboard footsteps wasn’t great, although should be expected I guess in such an old place. I saw lots of great reviews and I see why, but for my personal criteria it was not a good choice.
- Deborah (10/5): - Beautiful buildings and garden. Overall it was excellent
- Catherine (10/5): Lovely stay - Very friendly host. Lovely large, bright room. Ideal location being close to the centre of town.
Thank you for having us.

- Tim (10/5): - Breakfast was excellent

- Sean (10/5): - Very friendly family run business. Lovely quirky place. Large comfortable room. Only one thing, would have been nice to have dressing gowns, as the bathroom was across the hallway. Other than that, a lovely stay, highly recommend. Thank you Dotty
- Gozde (10/5): - Great hosts
Such a beautiful building
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Awesome unique property. Shabby chic meets homely farmhouse. Tick.

Dotty and Nick were very accommodating. Situated close to the town centre and all amenities. A lovely breakfast feeling very homely. Thank you 😊

- soumitra (10/5): - It's been a great stay!
- Judith (10/5): - Wonderful B&B in a great location. Parking on site is a bonus as the centre of Winchester is easily walkable in a few minutes.
Lovely comfy beds and great bedlinen.
Breakfast was delicious too. We would recommend the Croft and look forward to staying again.
- Nicola (10/5): - Gorgeous house. Room and bathroom lovely and clean. Plenty of room for everything. Hosts very welcoming and accommodating. Breakfast delicious. Walkable to city centre. Would thoroughly recommend and won’t hesitate to rebook if I am visiting Winchester again.
- Kevin (8/5): - the property was fab but it would of been nice to know the toilet was down the corridor before arriving and thankfully they did supply dressing gowns
- Wilma (10/5): - A beautiful property, very comfortable and a real home. Recommended.
- Alexander (10/5): - Really lovely room and excellent hosts. My second visit and I’ll be back. Thanks!
- Susan (10/5): - Delightful house, friendly, convenient location, excellent breakfast
- Sheri (10/5): Nice hostess! - Quick in and out stay, but very helpful hostess!
- JULIE (8/5): - A very old, interesting house, close to city centre. A warm, friendly host provided great breakfasts and information.
- Michael (10/5): All round great visit - An amazing historic house and home. Hosts made us welcome, great breakfast, large room, great shower, super location, loved the experience.
- Michele (8/5): - Listed building so it was a novel experience. My toilet was down the corridor and I had a bath but no shower. Owners were very friendly.
- Tatjana K (8/5): Good Atmosphere - Had a great sense of well being in that place. Very comfortable and nice.
Plus the hostess was most accommodating.
- Helen (6/5): - The bed and breakfast was good. The room was large and warm. Nice big windows and a desk. The internet worked well. There could have been an improved TV and Remote. A few more teas, coffee and biscuits. A refreshed tray. The bathroom was large and nice as well. Three guests could have slept in the room. It had a couch and (2) chairs. Dottie and her daughter were very nice. I enjoyed my stay for (2) nights. Helen DeVries
- Jane (8/5): - Loved its querkiness and creativity. And central location was a very big plus,
- Verified traveler (10/5): A real find - A really charming place to stay with extremely welcoming hosts. Very comfortable room and excellent breakfast.
- shalini (6/5): Weekend get away - Really good location within walking distance to town. Beautiful property with lots of quirky features that added to character. Our hosts were really nice and had a good chat with Rosie during breakdown. I would say the only negative was the bed. I found it a bit too hard for my comfort level and struggled to sleep but it was only for one night so was ok ; )
- Christopher (10/5): - The property was in a fantastic location
Parking was convenient
The owners of the property were lovely and very accommodating
Would stay again
- Alan (8/5): - Good location in a quiet spot with very helpful owners. Spacious room with everything you need.
Rustic feel to the place with some interesting and curios decor. Good breakfast, though not a full English.
- Anastasia (10/5): - We absolutely loved our stay at St. John's Croft! Such a dreamy setting for a very lovely home. Our room was gorgeous and had a beautiful view of the garden and town beyond. Zoe's breakfast was delicious! Winchester is one of my favorite places and I know we will be back--and now we have found the perfect place to stay.
- Jennifer (6/5): - Large unique room, comfortable pillows and bed. Strong cigarette smell downstairs. Friendly engaging staff.
- Ruth (8/5): - We found the double bed to be rather small and the mattress too firm for our liking but our room had an additional more comfortable single bed which we got made up.
- Bron (10/5): - We had absolutely no complaints except for the lack of en suite, although the bathroom was private and a short distance from our room.
- Roderick (10/5): Great place for a city break - Lovely old grade 2 listed Georgian house with large rooms, comfortable furniture and beds and great hosts. We stayed for a night, meeting up in Winchester with a friend. Ideally placed - the hosts allowed me to park my car early so we could just walk in to the city centre less than 10 minutes away. Zoe cooked us a great breakfast on Sunday morning and provided gluten free food too. Highly recommended.
- Adam (10/5): - We had a great stay here and have to give a massive shoutout to Zoe who looked after us, cooked a fantastic breakfast each morning and was just a delight to speak to. Would highly recommend to anyone visiting Winchester.
Also recommend visiting Winchester Cathedral, taking a walk down the river Ichen to St Catherines hill and taking in stunning views of the City.
- Perry (10/5): - I had an absolutely fantastic stay at St. John Croft! The room was beautifully decorated, and the attention to detail was evident in every corner of the house. The stunning view from my room left me in awe, and the lovely garden provided a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. The owners were incredibly friendly and accommodating, and the breakfast spread offered a delightful variety of options. I can't wait to return for another visit.Highly recommended!
- Jamie (10/5): - Great property with very friendly family. The breakfast was perfect too, highly recommended.
- Peter (10/5): - Good old fashioned hospitality delivered informally.
- Ian (10/5): - Enjoyed our brief stay. Helpful and accommodating, fun talking with Nick and the other guests over a fresh cooked breakfast.
- Irene (10/5): Something different - A lovely quirky house with lots of nooks and crannies. Our host couldn’t have been more accommodating. The room looked over a lovely garden and breakfast was plentiful. We had a private shower room but it was across the hall from the bedroom. However it didn’t detract from our enjoyment. The house is ideally placed for exploring Winchester.
- Lisa (10/5): - A lovely spot with nice folks. Just be aware your room may not have a shower and bathrooms, while private, are not necessarily attached to your room.
- Andrew (10/5): - We arrived early and hosts allowed us park on the property. Easy walk into Winchester. Building is currently undergoing renovation(exterior) so scaffolding on the road side.
Slight one-time smell of what I imagine to vape pen and another briefly like traditional cigarette - otherwise rooms smell great, clean and nicely appointed.
Host was even so kind to lend us a UK adapter for my US plugs because I forgot to buy one in town
- Brian (4/5): - Handy for Winchester city centre. It is an old house which is untidy and the kitchen where breakfast is served is messy. No real offers of breakfast food made and a begrudging attitude towards providing any type of hot food. I called out for attention twice during our stay. Once to enquire about breakfast food and then for dry towels. Nobody came. A poor attitude to customer service. Not recommended.
- Verified traveler (6/5): No ensuite - I hadn't realised the rooms were no ensuite, otherwise it's a nice property.
- Carole (10/5): - St Johns croft is a beautiful building with lovely gardens and views. Excellent location for exploring the historic city of Winchester. Dotty is a lovely host and was very helpful and accomodating. Our room was large and comfortable and we would definitely love to stay here again.
- Paul (10/5): Truly outstanding - I love staying at St John's Croft. A lovely relaxed atmosphere within a beautiful family home. Always made to feel so welcome.
- Kieran (10/5): - Beautiful accommodation, very friendly hosts. Shame about about the cigarette smoke wafting about the house
- Paul (10/5): - Large room with roll top bath. Listed building. Furniture in keeping. Good breakfast. Friendly owners. Parking on site. Short walk into Winchester near water mill.
- Jan (10/5): - We received an excellent welcome from the proprietor and enjoyed our stay in a large family room. Breakfast was hearty and healthy. This listed building is ideally situated for walking into Winchester town.
- Sarah (10/5): - This property was magical and the hosts were wonderful. We stayed in Room 1 and loved it. Wish we could have spent more time there!
- Elizabeth (8/5): - Property was quirky and very interesting in view of its age and cool owners. More like being at home than staying in a B and B. Would have preferred en suite but bathroom was for our use only. Lovely shower. Beds super comfy. We would definitely go back.
- DIANE (10/5): - cant fault The Croft
- MARK (8/5): Great Location - Great location, free parking available, great building, easy 10 min walk to centre of town. Bed rather hard - mattress needs replacing or a 'topper' adding. Bedroom decor a little tired. Great breakfast
- Keith (10/5): - Very nice B and B and very traditional. Excellent location for access to the center of Winchester. We had to leave early so didn't get chance to sample the breakfast.
- Paul (10/5): A thoroughly enjoyable stay - I had am amazing stay at St John's Croft. I arrived to a very warm welcome, the room was stunning, the house and gardens absolutely lovely. In the morning I had a superb breakfast of fruit and yoghurt, bacon and egg cooked freshly in front of me on the Aga by Dotty who was thoroughly engaging.
- Suzanne (10/5): - Very convenient for Winchester. Good breakfast and friendly welcome.
- David (10/5): Excellent stay. - Well equipped large room in an excellent position to visit Winchester attractions.
Good breakfast tailored to individual needs.
Very friendly and accommodating hosts.
- Wendy (8/5): -
- Sarah Helen Elizabeth (10/5): - Beautiful home, comfortable, spacious room, warm duvet, clean bathroom and breakfasts that brought sunshine to my son. Highly recommended, we were reluctant to leave.
Such an honour to stay in a grade II listed Queen Anne house just up the hill from the centre of Winchester. Being a former resident of Winchester, I would often cycle past this house as a teenager, little knowing the charm, warmth, peace and comfort that sat behind the beguiling façade. The house, situated partway up Blue Ball Hill, overlooks Winchester with stunning views of the Cathedral and the surroundings.
Such a warm welcome on a cold March day, not only by Nick and Dotty’s son, but also by a warm house! (A British March was a bit of a shock from Singapore). Our room was spacious, clean, comfortable and peaceful; as my son said, it allowed us to both have our own space. We overlooked the garden and enjoyed the peace and calm of our refuge at the end of each busy day.
Such a treat to have breakfast around a large farmhouse table in the spacious kitchen, warmed by an Aga. We were never alone, and our breakfast time was a highlight getting to know the Bengal bros (cats), chatting with our fellow guests, and watching the live feed of the Winchester Cathedral peregrines that had just started nesting.
Thank you, Dotty, Nick, Ben and Fred for making our stay just special.
- Lisa (8/5): Pleasant and ideally situated - Lovely B&B great building and central so easy for walking into the city. Friendly welcome apon arrival. We were able to access the room earlier than check in time. The room was clean, tidy, warm and beautifully decorated. The shower room was private but not en suite it was across the landing from the room. Robes were supplied to wear to walk from the room to the shower room. The bed was big and comfortable, pillows were soft. The view was lovely across the garden. The shower head was very low and we weren't able to adjust to make it higher as the fitment was broken. The sink in the shower room was small only big enough to wash hands really. The sink in the bedroom was big but had no plug in it. We weren't able to tell the owner as we didn't see her before we left. Plenty of tea and coffee in the room and a small jug of milk was provided. Breakfast was nice and fresh, only had eggs on toast as they had no bacon and niether of us like salmon. They offered to go bye more but it was easier just to have eggs and cereal tea and coffee.
- Michelle (10/5): - The location was great, a quiet area with an incredible view from the garden of the city, but a short walk to city center. The hostess was friendly and accommodating. I liked the high ceilings in the room. Good breakfast and good company. I would definitely stay there again when in the area.
- Christa (10/5): - A very comfortable and characterful B&B in an excellent location for visiting central Winchester. A warm welcome and a delicious breakfast. Our large bedroom (no.3) had a bath and handbasin in a screened off section of the room, but no access to a shower. Not a problem for our 1 night stay, but if you are unable to use a bath, I’d advise booking a different room here? Overall, highly recommended.
- Kim (10/5): - Beautiful building and accommodation host very friendly and helpful and a wonderful breakfast
- Gregory (8/5): Cat/Cats - Everything was very good, but we did not expect cat/cats. Maybe I did not do my due diligence, but I would not have booked here had I known. A member of my family is allergic to cats and although everything was fine, she sneezed and coughed the whole night.
- Sam (10/5): - A lovely unique property in an excellent location. We were made to feel very welcome in a relaxed environment.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Perfect B&B stay - Great B&B very near to city centre. Beautiful house and grounds with well-presented rooms and a charming style.
A great host and super breakfast.
- Pam (10/5): Excellent stay - Made to feel welcome
Room clean
Through out the house there are interesting things to look at
So near the centre
Thank you
- Cynthia (10/5): - Very comfortable and charming B&B. Dotty was a lovely host. Great location! Highly recommend St.John’s Croft!
- Helen (10/5): - Had a great time on our 2 night stay. Dotty was so welcoming and attentive. We felt well looked after. We had beautiful scrambled eggs in the morning. St John's Croft is a beautiful shabby chic house. We had a perfectly comfortable bed and lots of space in our room. We walked everywhere from the BnB, did a fantastic walking tour of Winchester from the tourist information shop, and enjoyed the pubs and restaurants at night. A fabulous stay. Couldn't fault it
- Louisa (10/5): - Lovely building, with stone floors abd heavy wooden doors in a really good location, just a short walk into the city. Felt relaxed and at home as soon as we saw our huge, comfortable room. Dotty was so hospitable, we arrived much later than expected, but she was very welcoming and friendly. The room was very well equipped, clean and comfortable. Our shower room just across the hall was equally clean, with nice toiletries provided. The view of the garden is stunning, would be a perfect place to relax with a good book. Was also nice to meet and chat with the other guests as we sat around the kitchen table with Dotty cooking our very tasty and filling breakfast. Would highly recommend this as a place to stay, and hope to return again in the future.
- Olivia (10/5): - Loved this stay! It really felt like a true bed and breakfast experience, and the hosts were both very kind. Our breakfast was also amazing and made to our preferences. Would love to stay here again.
- Elizabeth (10/5): - We loved our stay at St John's Croft - beautiful house, we were very welcomed , facilities delightful
- Keith (10/5): A nice place to stay, would likely stay there agai - very pleasant owner, nicely appointed rooms with large windows, decent breakfast made as requested
- Jacqueline (10/5): Close to Winchester and all it has to offer - A lovely large bright clean room. The bathroom was just outside the room but for exclusive use. We expected this given the age of the property. Dotty was an excellent host. Breakfast was good quality and lots of options. We would stay again if in the area. It was very close to the town centre just a ten minute walk. We had everything we needed
- ted (10/5): - Our host gave us a very warm friendly welcome. Was extremely helpful had a choice of rooms. A beautiful view over the garden a fabulous period property shabby chic style. Good quality breakfast and plenty of it. Ideal location easy access into main part of Winchester High Street. Dotty was very informative about the local area and restaurants. All in all a very enjoyable stay.
- Mark (10/5): - Couldn't have wished for anywhere better to stay for a two day trip to Winchester. Location super, being close to M3, although you wouldn't know it, and a short stroll into the city. Amenities at the croft also great with on site parking, facilities in the room covered all the bases and a great breakfast in the morning shared with fellow guests and superbly hosted.
- Daniel (10/5): - We loved this historic property and the owners, who live on site. It's a very old farmhouse (over 200 years) with lots of history. The owners are lovingly restoring it and it has a nice feel to it. The gardens around the house are beautiful, and we had a wonderful breakfast with Dottie, who made us feel welcome and more like a guest in her home rather than a visitor. The remodeled bathrooms and shower are spotlessly clean and modern. We enjoyed being within walking distance of downtown and river walk. Winchester is very historic and there is lots to do there. Awesome pubs as well. We will definitely stay here when going back to the area.
- Robyn (8/5): Nice room with a view - The room was delightful—looked just like the pictures. So was the real English breakfast. The rest of the house was kind of a mess, with doors opening into very untidy rooms. There was no sitting room for guests. The bathroom was outside the room but I believe it was our own. The location was beautiful and an easy walk to the pedestrian district. I would stay there again.
- David (10/5): - wonderful property, friendly and helpful hosts, nice informal atmosphere. would stay here on next visit.
- HUGO (8/5): Charming place - Very welcoming place , good location , excellent service , very good breakfast.
Comfy beds .
The only thing that has room for improvement is the internet service. It was intermittently working at some times
