Guest Reviews
- Aleksei (10/5): - What made this place special is the family running it — warm, welcoming, the kind of hosts that make you feel like a guest, not a customer.
This is a basic place, and I mean that with full respect. Come here to slow down and disappear for a while. The nature is alive around you. Monkeys wander through regularly. The place is cut off from urban infrastructure, which comes with some limitations. Electricity runs on a generator — evenings only, off by 4-5am. But honestly, that's a great trigger to put the phone down and just be.
Not a fancy place. But if you're after atmosphere and local hospitality — this is the spot. Could be hot in low season. And a few extra hammocks in the common area would have been a lovely touch.

- alexandra (8/5): Pure Tonsai vibe - Good place where to stay in tonsai. Meeting other travelers and climbers was nice. It keeps the essence of Tonsai alive and the staff was really nice The only thing I think could be improved would be ac in the rooms

- Willow (4/5): Good location but very basic facilities that felt dirty. - Good location and not too expensive for area as you can easily walk to Tonsai and Railay Beach.
Near quite a few restaurants. There was no electricity during the day from 6am to 6pm, meaning the fan didn’t work, so our room became really hot. Therefore, we had to avoid accommodation during the day. On the listing the rooms show nets over the beds, however we did not have these and the staff stated there was not nets over beds in any rooms. On our first night we had a bug infestation, including flies, mosquitoes and bugs on the floor. They were in both the bathroom and bedroom (including in our bed). It was awful (this is the room with an Italian flag on the door for anyone wondering). We’re okay with a few insects and geckos but this was awful. Thankfully the host let us change rooms, but there was still no net over the bed and the facilities were basic. We will not be staying here again.

- Tom (10/5): - Heavy gaff
- Caitlin (5/5): - Full of charm and run by lovely people. We slept well but it was hot in the room. Lovely staff and very helpful. Beautiful location Our room was quite tired and the bathroom was quite dirty.
- Anna (9/5): Đủ tốt trong giá tiền - Tôi thích vị trí, rất yên tĩnh, tách biệt khỏi sự ồn ào, nhiều cây xanh, không gian bên ngoài rộng rãi, dễ chịu. 1.
- Ivett (10/5): Close to nature, far from wifi - I really liked the atmosphere. De garden, the terrace, surrounded by nature. It would have been nice if the wifi reaches to the bungalows, or it's not just from 6 pm to dawn, but we managed.
- Zuzanna (10/5): - Lokalizacja i klimat na wyspie. Brak klimatyzacji.
- Zuzanna (10/5): Bardzo relaksujące i przyjemne miejsce. - Lokowizacja i klimat na wyspie. Brak klimatyzacji.
- Emily (2/5): - The location on such a beautiful beach I knew this was a budget place, so I wasn’t expecting luxury, but the cleanliness was really disappointing. The pillows were moldy and the shower was extremely dirty. This is the kind of thing that could be improved with proper cleaning and maintenance.
There were also issues with bugs and mosquitoes because the fly screens on the windows were broken and there were no mosquito nets around the bed. We were bitten during the night. The bathroom felt very run down, with mold, dirt, and bugs, and the bidet was leaking which left the bathroom floor wet. The bed an pillows also felt damp and unpleasant
Overall, the place could be much better if more effort was put into cleanliness and basic upkeep.
- Cristina (8/5): Lovely but a bit overpriced - The surroundings of the bungalow are very green and with monkeys.
Thai massage and all services close by.
There are Mosquito nets in the windows 👏
The surroundings are quiet. Unless you get an annoying neighbour OFC
There is a climbing school by it and a chillout area to hangout and do yoga and a restaurant and supermarket Chickens are too noisy, you have to sleep with earplugs especially if you sleep in one of the last bungalows.
The rooms are not super cheap compared to others around without adding much value, a little more neat but not much more.
Hard the access if you follow Google maps, it is only from the extremes of the beach.
The businesses around/spaces are not that taken care of, a bit more lower budget area, more thought for nature lovers who don't want to spend much
Some toilets don't rinse well
- Griffiths (10/5): Absolute fabulous time - Staff were excellent and extremely friendly, absolutely loved our stay here and will definitely be back soon!
- Achille (6/5): -

- joaquin (1/5): . - The bar We stayed two nights at Chillout, and the experience was very disappointing. Whether you call it a hotel, hostel, or bungalow, the place does not match what they advertise on Booking at all.
The service was poor from the beginning. Electricity is only available from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am, and the fan is connected to the only power outlet in the room. This means that if you want to use the fan, you cannot charge your phone or any other devices at the same time. It’s impossible to have both.
The shower was honestly embarrassing extremely low water pressure and, of course, only cold water. The bathroom was in very bad condition; there wasn’t even a proper mirror. The toilet was also in poor shape.
The room itself was nothing special and nowhere near worth the price we paid. It is far from justifying its rate.
On top of that, they charge a deposit for towels and the key. You don’t receive the room until you pay it, and then you have to personally return the towels along with the key to get your deposit back. In our case, we didn’t know this at first, so I had to walk back up to get the towels, which is not a short walk , something they clearly don’t handle through housekeeping.
After two months of traveling, this was by far the worst place we have stayed.
Overall, it was a very bad experience. We did not like the place and would not recommend it.

- Loli (10/5): - personnel parfait
- Paolo (7/5): -
- table du balcon était sale
- Sabrina (4/5): -
- Melissa (10/5): -
- Julie (7/5): - The area and Tonsai Beach is extremely beautiful and is probably one of the best beaches I will ever see! All the staff is very friendly and as the name states there is a very chill, layed-back and relaxed feeling among everyone. Nearby are a lot of cute and authentic restaurants where we always ate. All facilities in our room where leaking, the bed was very hard and it wasn’t very clean. Though for the price I don’t want to complain too much.
Be aware if you book that electricity is only on from 6pm to 6am - therefore also the ventilators in the room, which meant that we could not escape the heat during the day…
- Miren (8/5): - Atmosphere. Very familiar. Bathroom not cleaned at all after check outs. Showers drain not working and water flooding
- Laundon (10/5): - Beautiful clean room with balcony overlooking the garden.
Tastefully decorated and a few minutes walk from the beach.
Lovely owners who look after their guests.
If I return to Koh Lanta I will stay here.
- Sandra (5/5): -
- Valentina (8/5): -
- Annika (9/5): - It was really nice place out in the jungle! I would definitely stay again. Staff was very friendly and accommodating. I got to check out the night before I left. The place has a nice vibe too and the food was excellent!
- Georgi (10/5): Best spot, definetely will be back. - The best choice we made. We arrived in amazing athmosphere surrounded by beautiful nature at very afordable cost. Pesonnel was friendly, food superb.
- Flora (8/5): -
- Saskia (8/5): - Excellent location on tonsai beach, a great vibe A bit hot without power for most of the day, and during rainy season clothes don't dry without AC
- Kevin (9/5): - So chill, in the low season there's nobody around. Perfect to relax.
- David (5/5): -
- Haag (10/5): -
- Eliott (10/5): - Probably the best stay in tonsai
- Kate (9/5): Superb -
- Evan (7/5): Unique commune in the core of Tonsai - The campus is really cool and has a lot of potential during high season. The bed/pillow/room was nice, with a good sized balcony There wasn't drinking water available, nor soap of any sort in the ensuite bathrooms. The shower looked to be in rough shape, though it ended up being not too bad. The electricity situation wasn't ideal, but can be worked around.
- Carlos (10/5): Exceptional -
- Marley (10/5): Exceptional -
- Benjamin (6/5): Pleasant -
- Helen (8/5): Very good - Bungalow in the jungle, far from the crowd of railay. Location is good and the room is clean. Chill and calm atmosphere.
Very cheap for the location. Bed is tough. The heat doesn’t help either, fan is fixed on the ceiling and not really efficient.
- Lucky (10/5): Exceptional -
- Emma (8/5): Great atmosphere- have stayed here before and would stay again. - Such a great community vibe here! I need air con, but lots of people can make do with a fan.
- Fatema (8/5): Very good -
- Eva (1/5): Bad -
- Jedidja (5/5): Passable - On Saturday evening there was a party, crazy loud music, people taking drugs in the middle of the property. We couldn’t sleep.
- Fergus (8/5): Fantastic location, friendly staff and adequate accommodation - definitely good value for money - Spectacular location a short walk from Tonsai beach. Our bungalows had a terrace from where we could wath the monkeys wandering around. Room was a reasonable size and bathroom facilities were adequate. Cold shower - but this was advertised so I can't complain
On one night of our stay, music was very loud until late.
- Marta (9/5): Superb -
- Paloma (8/5): Very good - Amazing location, beautiful. Staff very friendly and hostel has a lot of facilities like bar and restaurant and a shop. Room windows had mosquito nets all over so none got in. The toilet could be a bit cleaner
- kenny (8/5): - Fab place
- Anthony (8/5): Very good -
- Shona (7/5): Good -
- #frank.on.travel (4/5): Bad and dirty room - never again! - Good Location away drom the touristic crowds. Nice beach bar and beautiful view of the beach. Broken clogged Toilette, very dirty bathroom with calcified shower! No warm water. No mosquito net in the sleeping rooms like on the pictures.
No Power/WLAN during the day. In General lower standard as offered!
- Sean (7/5): Good - Perfect location away from the crowds and close to a beautiful beach
- Sean (8/5): Very good - Friendly vibe. Clean. Good location compared to noisy Ao Lang and pricey Railay
- Danny (10/5): Amazing - Amazing location, difficult to walk too so boat is best option unless you like hiking/climbing with your bags. Gorgeous beach very chilled
- Simone (7/5): Good -
- Susanna (10/5): Exceptional - Everything was perfect, especially that little treehouse & monkeys
- Lisa (6/5): Spartanskt men mysigt boende!
- Susanna (8/5): Very good - Location is just breathtaking. Well organised spaces, very pretty and chilled vibe. Most staff are very friendly and helpful. Big shout out to the guy at the reception that helped us with tips on how to get to Surat Thani with public transport. Would definitely come back It could use with some better mattresses and pillows
- Amy (3/5): Dirty and expensive - The location was lovely. It was peaceful and nice to see monkeys jumping on the roof every morning. It’s a great location if you’re climbing since it’s a short walk to most of the climbing areas. The place was very dirty and looked like it hadn’t been properly cleaned or maintained in years. The pillows were covered in black mould and the bathroom was very dirty (see photos). It was expensive compared to other places in Tonsai. I wouldn’t stay here again.
- Nannette (9/5): A nice experience, a nice atmosphere and very relaxed. - The common areas are fantastic, the overall vibe is very friendly and feels safe and comfortable and calm. The bungalows are satisfactory. The rooms were clean but we had some issues with our toilet (wasn’t fully attached and smelled a little of sewer) and there was a bird that got into the AC unit (but the staff helped remove it).
- Mari (6/5): Nice and friendly stuff but luck of attention to details. You don’t want to be in Taiwan with no battery on your phone - Beautiful place in the middle of the jungle. I don’t usually do this, but after I expressed what we experienced and did not see much interest I have too.
We arrive at the room and sheets were dirty, no shower gel, no bottle of water, no hot water (it had to be activated from behind the bungalows but we weren’t told) no electricity in the morning (we were not told about and we had no battery on our phones the next day..)
- Helena (10/5): Exceptional - Chill Out Bar and Bungalows had a great atmosphere and very kind personel. Our kids also enjoyed the slackline and the common area. Tonsai is a wonderful place for climbing and also a safe place for kids since there are no cars around, we loved to stay there!
- John (8/5): Great setting, but it does all feel a bit unloved. - The setting is stunning. Tucked away from the beach, very close to nature, yet an easy walk for food, bars supplies etc. The fan was very noisy, but the staff went out of their way to replace it with a better one. Despite all the reviews regarding the cleanliness it does leave a lot to be desired.
- Sally (8/5): Amazing location not commercial and pretty cheap. - If you arriving by long tail boat.. ask them to drop you on west side of beach. Path from there is cement. Staff were very helpful and friendly. It is worth bringing towel and cotton sleep bag. And buy a big bottle of water in case supply is switched off
- Heidi (8/5): Very good - We stayed in a bungalow. A bit dirty and worn out but we weren't expecting luxury - the room has everything you need. Very cheap laundry service, lots of places where to chill in the garden, a slackline and tiny gym, nice restaurant and bar. One of the main hang out spots in Tonsai! But not too noisy to sleep. All in all super nice atmosphere and friendly staff. There was no proper duvet, just a polyester sarong. Only 2 electic outlets in weird places. No ac, just a fan. Electricity only from 6pm-6am, also wifi only available during this time. No cleaning so there was sand everywhere. Need to ask for toilet paper at the reception and you get 1 roll at a time. More expensive than the other similar (no ac) bungalows in Tonsai, probably because Chill Out is the only one with web pages.
- Emma (10/5): Jungle vibes, but is it for you? - The location was incredible, lush jungle setting, with a real back to basics feel.
The bungalow itself was tired and needs a refresh to be good.
The staff were super laid back and friendly, like the whole bay area. If you want matching bed linen, hot water, fridge, toiletries and all that, this is not the place for you.
But if you want a chilled out jungle vibe with loads of local bars and places to eat with like minded people, most of whom love climbing or the locals that like playing their guitars and having a good old sing song (before the electric comes) this is deffo the place to be.
We wished we could have stayed longer and would come back in a heart beat.
Wats bar a 5 min walk is a good place to hang out and waste a day drinking, staff are unbelievably funny and the beers are cold.
- Gabriela (7/5): not easily accesssible but authentic place - This is the less touristy beach spot to stay in the region, still authentic, not gentrified, not extortionate and with great vibes. Staff was lovely. Please mind that Tonsai is not a very accessible beach, you can only access by boat and from Railay they will charge you 300 baht, which is absurd as it's a 5 minute ride. Unless there are 6 people then you can share, but there are not many people going there as it's not as popular so high chances you are the only one and will have to pay this. You can also hike there and it was relatively easy, took me 15 min (able bodied person), but it was impossible to do so with my wheel luggage. I had to leave at 6am to catch my flight and was charged 800baht for a 10 min boat ride to Ao Nang, absolute extortion but I had no other choice. In the end, it would have been cheaper to pay more and stay in Ao Nang, a souless place but at least you can get the boat to Tonsai and Railay and spend the day there. Or bring only a backpack and use the track (you can find the place and details on google maps). Also please note there is only electricity between 6pm-6am, and even so it's a bit sketchy and my phone was not fully charged and I couldn't turn the lights on at 5am when I woke up.
- Rachel (10/5): Beautiful stay-will definitely be back! - Being in a remote area surrounded by nature and friendly people made this very memorable. You can take an adventurous route to the neighbouring town. Bearing in mind the remoteness, some of the facilities were lacking however this didn’t hinder our experience.
- Patrick (10/5): Exceptional - Extraordinary place to be, friendly staff, lovely people, wunderful community - if you´re up to something more laid back and open-hearted -> strongly recommended!
