Guest Reviews
- Emma (8/5): Lovely proper house in a local area, with the free bikes an absolute highlight - Like many of the reviews before this one, the host Fiona really helped make the stay. The personal touch of meeting us and being there to answer our questions was really nice.
We hired this place to be further out of the centre and because of the bikes on offer. This was a highlight of our whole trip. We cycled down the river covered in cherry blossom. It was easy to navigate around by bike and meant the location, quite far out, was no issue at all.
the kitchen is full of everything you'd need to cook - the whole point of going self catering really vs hotels! It even had soy, oil and basic condiments that you would need but wouldn't want to buy for a short stay. I find the futon mattresses on tatami quite uncomfortable, but its very traditional and so not a bad thing
- Govert (10/5): - Fiona was a great host, very welcoming and helpful! The place was really nice and a quiet, but nice neighbourhood. Nothing
- Corinna (10/5): Asthetic & comfortable stay - We loved guesthouse Chayama! A beautifully aesthetic & comfortable stay & Fiona was a delightful host! We enjoyed the area, it felt local & quiet but you can bus ride to any tourist hubs. Plenty of good restaurants in walking distance as well as the gorgeous river. We really enjoyed our stay.
- Ruslan (10/5): - The house is amazing. One of the best places to stay in Kyoto, if you want to experience the life of locals and not being in the tourist center, but still get around easily. The owner and the locals are lovely. Exceptional stay
- Marcel (9/5): Nice quite place to stay. Very neat. - Very good equipped kitchen.
- Priscillia (10/5): -
- Martyna (10/5): -
- India (10/5): A wonderful place to stay in Kyoto with everything you need at your fingertips whilst being out of the rush of busy area - This property was extremely comfortable in every way. It had everything we needed and more - small balcony upstairs, two bedrooms upstairs, a washing machine, kitchen, living room - it was awesome. Fiona was an absolute sweetheart and gave us some recommendations for Kyoto which were fabulous recommendations. She was very kind. The location is away from touristy spots which we absolutely loved. We wanted to live amongst locals and we were. Its still walkable to the philosophers path and extremely close to bus and train locations - it was very convenient. I could easily live here, totally liveable and great location. The value for money is very good. Arigatou gozaimasu Fiona! Nothing!
Rien

- Jo (9/5): Loved it here! Would stay again. - Gorgeous little authentic Japanese guesthouse. We loved little touches the host made. Extra padding under the futon beds and recommending dinner places close by. Also loved riding the bikes around town. We loved that it had a washing machine but needed to dry our clothes. Being winter we couldn’t hang them outside.
- Phil (9/5): - Quiet location. Traditional Japanese house. Clean with lots of amenities. Fiona was very friendly and helpful and helped us with our luggage forwarding. Nothing.
- Marina (9/5): A wonderful place to stay and use as a home base to explore Kyoto. - The space and ability to spread out. Nothing
- Marjorie (9/5): Excellent, private and public transport accesible - Very cosy and styleful designed accomodation
- Sharon (10/5): - Very conveniently located near Chayama station, very clean and well equipped. Fiona was very friendly and helpful. There are bikes that can be used and 7/11 and local restaurants / izakaya nearby. We would highly recommend staying here.
- Kiersten (9/5): All family members were happy and impressed with the stay and love Kyoto. - Cute cozy Japanese style house in a quiet neighborhood amongst the locals. Close to transport and supermarket and 7 Eleven. Host was very friendly and helpful. Nothing
- Britton (10/5): Will always come back - Clean and comfortable with easy access and amenities
- HSIN HUNG (10/5): -
- Jason (9/5): -
- Linda (10/5): Comfortable Japanes house well situated for Kyoto. Good value. - Great location for Eizan line with link to Mount Hei cable car and rope way. Easy to get into town and if you’re a cyclist you’ll enjoy the bikes. Simple, well equipped and comfortable in traditional Japanese style. Host Fiona very friendly and helpful. Nothing, it was great for two of us.
- David (10/5): Amazing - Totally loved this place... we had 7 nights in kyoto so wanted somewhere to relax a bit more and be able to maybe cook etc. This is spot on... location is lovely, and the public transport system brilliant so we had no problems visiting everywhere we wanted to go. 7/11 literally round the corner, and anyone who visits japan must try their food ! Fiona was excellent, engaging beforehand and during our stay,.always wanting to ensure having a great time. Property itself is lovely, traditional in terms of decoration, but a nice sofa in the lounge which we wanted for relaxing in the evening after sightseeing and 25k steps! Kitchen met our needs, as did thw washing machine. I completely recommend this place. Nothing...however this is a traditional home, the stairs are steep, so if you have mobility challenges then be mindful.
- Marine (10/5): - Tous !
- Naoko (9/5): -
- Katharina Suzanne (10/5): The perfect little house for a family stay in Kyoto. - Our stay at Chayama Guesthose was absolutely fantastic.
We arrived by the house in the afternoon, and punched in the code we had received before. The house is beautifully decorated, light, and cozy. Everything you could think of was provided for, from towels, toothbrushes, coffee, sugar, and cleaning supplies. The washing machine was a great help for traveling with family in the hottest of seasons.
Our host Fiona, and her colleague Mariko were tremendously helpful, and the communication was stellar.
The house is located in a residential area close to Chayama station. The neighbors were very friendly, and everyone greeted you, which is something that would not happen in other places.
Restaurants, a combini, a big shopping mall, and a little antiques shop are nearby. The bus 206 is in walking distance and takes you to many touristy spots, and Kyoto station. There was nothing that could have been better to be honest.
Thanks to the great communication, the wonderful offer, the calming atmosphere of the house, everything was just perfect. We did not have to stress about anything, which is valuable.

- Dmitrii (10/5): - It’s been a week since we left Kyoto. We stayed for a few days and were truly impressed by how thoughtfully the house was arranged – every detail was carefully considered, making our stay exceptionally comfortable.
What touched us most was our host Fiona’s genuine care and involvement in her guests’ experience. I accidentally left my top behind, and Fiona went out of her way to make sure it was returned. She kept in touch for several days, looking for the best way to send it, and eventually mailed it to me.
This level of attention, kindness, and hospitality is something we’ll never forget.
Thank you so much, Fiona!
- Ulrike (9/5): Kleines niedliches Guesthouse - Ein kleines Haus, sehr gemütlich u.liebevoll eingerichtet.
- Kylie (10/5): Great property - Great property, very homely and exceptionally clean. Close proximity to local train station with 7 eleven around the corner. Wonderful host provided suggestions of places to visit. Stairs are very steep (we knew this when we booked) which was fine for us but would be difficult for anyone travelling with mobility issues
- C (10/5): Bikes were a huge bonus during a short stay in this lovely home - Lovely traditionally renovated house in residential location. Our host was very kind and able to share useful local information. We loved using the bikes to cycle around the city and along the river path. This was a good way to see the different areas. Really enjoyed our stay.
- Ulrich (10/5): Great place and very welcoming host - Fiona was great and provided us with an amazing stay. We loved the bike option and enjoyed exploring the surrounding areas. N/A
- Rebeca (10/5): The cutest and super comfortable! - Very cute house, small but very comfortable and very convenient but quiet location! The host was amazing and helpful. The stairs are a bit steep which was fine for us but could be an issue for other people.
- Tushar (10/5): Great for authentic Japanese neighbourhood experience in Kyoto - Extremely helpful host, very well thought of property
- Javiera (10/5): Exceptional -
- Standwin (9/5): Superb - All. Nil
- Thomas (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely house in quiet neighborhood with everything you need. The included bikes are a huge benefit - about 45mins ride to Kyoto station
- Michelle (10/5): A fabulous hidden gem in Kyoto 💓 - We loved our stay at the guesthouse. It was great for the family to have their own space. The guesthouse is very comfortable, clean and convenient to transport and 7/11. We enjoyed experiencing daily life in the suburbs of Kyoto.
Fiona was such a wonderful host, offering great advice on where to go in Kyoto. She really went above and beyond. Book with confidence. ☺️ Nothing.
- Vincent (9/5): Wonderful city, beautiful guesthouse, great host! - Nestled in a quiet area of Kyoto, this guesthouse is a hidden gem! If you want to experience what it's like to be living in Japan, this is the place to be. While it is not a mansion-size, it has everything you need; whether to cook, do laundry, rest and soak up the Japan experience. All the decorations are in the right vibe and there's a 7-Eleven less than 30 secs away. But I have to tell you the real star is the host Fiona. She is exceptional and goes beyond to give you advice/tips. One time, one of our family members has an eye infection and she kindly gave us advice on where to go for a pharmacy and how to treat it. Highly recommended!!! It is no secret that it's not the most convenient location, but if you want that, a city hotel is more suitable; but if you want to live in a guesthouse and experience living in a Japanese suburb, it is the way to go!
- Ma (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gina (8/5): Comfortable and great to relax, close to transport options - Roomy and comfortable, washing machine, kitchen facilities, close to lots of transport options ❤️ Didn't have many kitchen utensils etc
- Britton (10/5): We will definitely be back in future! - Amazing place to stay with bicycles as great option for quick transportation around Kyoto. Comfortable and clean and felt like home.
- Anthea (10/5): An amazing experience - We loved this accommodation, so cute and perfect for everything we needed
- Katrina (9/5): Great little house! Stylish spacious comfortable cosy we loved using the bicycles! - Bicycles were awesome bonus, host was attentive, lots of little details.
- Pranay (10/5): The best stay of kyoto - Staying at Fiona’s guest house was the best decision of our Kyoto trip. The house is well located and has every tiny bit you could ask for. Fiona also helped us with amazing recommendations. We will definitely like to stay again :)
- Price (10/5): Brilliant would stay again and recommend - Beautiful, spotless and well located. Kitchen well equipped and little extras like English tea provided. Loved it. Nothing
- Lucas (10/5): Exceptional -
- Marina (10/5): Exceptional - Great private cozy house in Kyoto in a good location. Fiona was a great host. The house has a living room and a separate sleeping area upstairs, which can be divided into two spaces. The beds were comfortable, bathroom was super clean and the kitchen came with a filter coffee machine which we loved. I'm someone who needs coffee first thing in the morning and this was the only place I stayed in Japan where I could have it so this gets extra points for that! They also offer bikes for free which you can use to explore Kyoto. Nothing, everything was great.
- Amira (10/5): Exceptional -
- Emily (10/5): An amazing stay hosted by the lovely Fiona, clean and comfortable in a lovely area! - Beautiful house in an amazing area of Kyoto. Fiona was fantastic and the stay was very clean and comfortable! Nothing it was perfect!
- Yael (10/5): Wonderful peaceful stay - Fiona the host was super nice and responsive, she gave us great restaurant and activity tips on our arrival. The house is beautiful simple and clean - was absolutely perfect for us. There were 4 bicycle we could use and this was a game changer, Kyoto is very flat and great to bike around in, I think it's the fastest (funest) way to get to places around the city. The nieghbourhood was super quiet and local, even though its a bit far from the center with the bicycle this becomes an advantage. Liked everything about it, with biclcle its perfect but without them I think it might be a bit too far from the center, I don't know though, we didnt try using bus or train because we were delighted to go with the bike everywhare.
- Adina (10/5): Great property and location for visiting Kyoto! - Chayama Guesthouse is a quaint and elegant place, it has everything you need for a comfortable stay. Fiona is an amazing host, she gave us great tips on food, places to see, transport, even found some Yorkshire tea, so we don't miss home. There is a comprehensive folder at the property with everything you need to know about the amenities and about Kyoto. We enjoyed everything!
- Wendy (10/5): I would highly recommend staying here if you like to get away from the crowds. - The house was just like the pictures. It is located in a very quiet residential area, but is close to transit and a 7eleven. We loved the adorable train station that takes you into the mountains or connects into town and used the bikes to explore temples, the Philosophers Path and the River. There is even a mall close by, if you need to do some shopping. Nothing I didn’t like, but a note that the stairs are steep to get to the bedrooms.
- David (8/5): Very good -
- Stevenson (10/5): Exceptional -
- Demi (10/5): Exceptional - The atmosphere of the house was really nice and it gave us a good place to move around and also explore the outer parts of Kyoto. Also the hospitality of Fiona was wonderful. It was a bit small for four people to hang laundry
- Ramone (10/5): Highly recommend! - The perfect house for a family stay, comfortable, beautiful decor, quiet, traditional but with modern touches. Warm, helpful host with great recommendations. Nothing.
- Helena (10/5): Charming gem of a place - ideal for small family! - Everything! Charming gem hidden away with the most helpful English speaking owner. She really thought of everything one may need...even a First Aid kit, pods for the clothes washer etc. The bikes to use are a bonus! Slightly out of the way, but busroutes very close by and area not as noisy. Looking forward to returning one day!! Nothing!
- Anne (9/5): Superb - Helpful host who helped us find replacement reading glasses and even ordered us a taxi when we were worried it would rain on checkout morning. Fiona gave us a detailed guide to appliances, transportation, and provided the use of bicycles during our stay. Water bottles in the refrigerator and senbei to snack on when we arrived. Clean. Loved the sinks, coffee table, and furniture which all fit well, were functional, and looked great in the space. Very minor--We couldn't all (4 of us) eat in the kitchen at the same time. Maybe two small stools instead of the larger chair?
- Linda (10/5): Awesome place to stay. Super close to the railway and neighbourhood eating places. -
- Natalie (10/5): Lovely home away from home - Fiona is a great host. Perfect little home to give us a real traditional Japaneae experience (with a great creature comforts!). It had everything our family could need. Loved the upstairs bedroom - was like a big sleepover for our family of four.
- Baily (9/5): Superb -
- Samaa (10/5): Exceptional -
- Daniel (9/5): Great value for money - Spacious house (uncommon in Japan). Fiona is a great host, very helpful and responsive. Bycicles are included for free! Location is a bit far from major touristic attractions and main train station, but we’ll connected by bus
- Nurfarhana (10/5): Exceptional - The house in Japanese style fully equipped to live there
- Celeste (10/5): Was nice to experience traditional Japanese way of life. - A beautiful traditional Japanese guest house. A bus stop and local railway line around the corner from the house. Nothing. Everything was perfect, Fiona is an amazing hostess.
- Nan (8/5): Very good -
- Kar (10/5): Lovely, comfortable stay. - Love the guesthouse, it is one of our highlights for our honeymoon. Fiona is amazing, and the communication was really good. I really like the folder with all the information, it was so helpful for us to plan the trip. We were glad that we followed Fiona's recommendation to visit Mt.Hiei. It was so convenient to have such a spectacular temple! We love everything about Guesthouse Chayama really :) It was great to be able to bike to Kyoto central too ! Nothing! Maybe the bikes need a little maintenance?
- Gilly (10/5): Would love to come back! - The house was fantastic, nicely decorated and extremely well equipped. Fiona was a great host, communicative and helpful. we also appreciated the early check-in time! Maybe the steep stairs - but we do appreciate this comes with the type of house, and it was worth it.
- Marie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Madeleine (10/5): Loved it! Would book again. - Host was amazing - so friendly and accommodating. Facilities were great - clean, full kitchen with everything you could need. Free bikes for 4 people. Washing machine. Location was great for us as it was out of the hustle and bustle a little of Kyoto but still close to restaurants, cafes, gardens, temples etc. Pillows were uncomfortable - but this was to be expected as it is a traditional Japanese bed set up so keep this in mind if booking (not like a Western bed).
- Claudia (10/5): Exceptional -
- Carol (8/5): Lovely property. Comfortable with excellent facilities. Very friendly and helpful host. - Very comfortable. Excellent facilities. Even a toaster! Nothing.
- Agnes (9/5): Superb -
- Smith (10/5): Quaint, clean, and classic spot with an amazing host. - Everything about my experience at guesthouse chayama was incredible. Highly recommend staying here!
- Geoffrey (8/5): Very good -
- Laura (10/5): we had a great stay - The house is great! Not in the centre of Kyoto but it’s easy to get there with public transport or bike :) The neighborhood is quiet, no tourists at all! Fiona, the owner, is extremely nice and helpful! I really recommend Guesthouse Chayama!
- Sven (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing host, really. When she said, contact me if you need anything, she meant it. Usage of bikes included, 7-11 50 meters away, and the local train station around the corner.
- Barbara (9/5): Quaint house, great location. - Lovely house, close to transport & restaurants. Fiona was a gracious host.
- Jill (10/5): wonderful stay in Kyoto - Close to rail (Eizan) and bus line stops. Beautifully appointed home. Comfortable futon-the futon rests on a two-inch (?) foam pad on the mat. AC worked great. Plenty of hot water. The owner is great to work with-fast responses, helpful information and friendly.
- Jennifer (10/5): wonderful host, excellent location, cute house. loved it and highly recommend. - Beautiful house, many amenities, great location and excellent staff. I prefer a bed to futon but this is Japan. True Japanese experience.
- Radosław (9/5): Superb - If You want to feel like in Japan home this it is. Owner very helpful. Neighbours very friendly and safety area. Bikes can be use during the stays. far away from city center, around 40 minutes by bus from Kyoto station ( depends on traffic) , very small shower for big people.
- Andrea (10/5): Exceptional - We loved Guesthouse Chayama!!! The location is great as it is very close to a tram stop and a large grocery store. It's also in a residential area, so it's nice and quiet. The guesthouse's space was really fantastic for our family of four. The kitchen was roomy for meal prep and there were lots of useful (and much appreciated) kitchen basics like oil, salt, tea, sugar, etc. There were lots of ways to either keep spaces open or close spaces off with doors, which we liked with two kids in tow. There is a balcony to hang up clothes which I liked, but an absolutely wonderful feature of this guesthouse is access to bikes and bike helmets. We spent several days in Kyoto and most days we biked to our destinations. We met the host Fiona on our final night and she is just lovely! I would stay here again in a heartbeat!
- Jo (10/5): Simply sublime - Everything! We liked everything. A home with a wonderful atmosphere, everywhere you rest your eyes is sublime. Very comfortable, well appointed, great neighbourhood. And the host is lovely, a great communicator and went above and beyond for us. Loved it all. Really can't fault it. I guess I would say if you have mobility issues the stairs to the second floor are very steep, but there is a good hand rail.
