Guest Reviews
- Graeme (10/5): Second trip fantastic again thankyou - Excellent hosts and staff , so friendly always ready and able to assist with your needs , travel arrangements train tickets restaurant bookings ,
Fantastic breakfast ,
Great onsen ,
Big lounge with fireplace to relax
Easy access to Akakura Osen/Kanko Ski Resort and short 3 min walk to bus for other close by resorts
- Christine (10/5): 10/10 - Wow wow wow! Best place to stay in Myoko. The best staff and pancakes ever. Would highly recomend it!
- Rod (8/5): Awesome….will be back. - Meiko and her team were fantastic. Felt like part of the family. Breakfast daily was fantastic. Board storage could have been better. Dinner was pretty average.
- Cathy (9/5): -
- Tam (10/5): One of the best stays I had in a ski resort without breaking my wallet. - Close proximity to ski lift which also offer night skiing.
Comfortable bed and room with exceptional heating during winter
Breakfast spread and stations were great and delicious
Hotel host was very helpful and easy to communicate via English
Hotel staff were all very friendly and made us feel like home
10/10 will stay again when Onsen pool could be cleaned more throughly. Seem to see lots of dead skin floating about
Or maybe cuz I always enter the onsen later in the night.
But the onsen still help with the muscle ache recovery. It was hot enough to provide a very rejuvenating soak every night
- Jayson (10/5): -
- Kaori (8/5): -
- Adrian (7/5): A great week. Enjoyed the hotel and skiing. - Great central location The onsen is pretty dated
- Margaret (10/5): - Fabulous staff, Mieko was exceptionally helpful, even assisting us with organising train travel for our next destination.
- Jacqueline (9/5): Great service, super helpful staffs! Mieko was very cool, you asked she delivered! Don’t miss the homemade Plum wine at -
- Louise (10/5): A fantastic stay with warm welcoming staff - Great location
Fantastic staff
On- site Onsen
Great bar and food Nothing really but maybe some addition hooks in the room to hang clothing?
- Caroline (9/5): Loved the onsen and the robes. Mieko was super accommodating, running a professional team - Breakfast was very generous with all food stations well stocked. Staff were super friendly and courteous. Coffee was the only disappointment with drip filter the only type available. Pancakes were a huge hit. the ratio of staff to client was amazing. better coffee either in the form of DIY coffee machines or staff bringing to table. Availability of proper napkins. More fresh fruit would be a bonus but at least there was tinned fruit. Potentially more dinner options and availability every night. We arrived around 10pm by train and had to wait 30 mins for a taxi to hotel.
- Francois (9/5): Very welcoming staff and delicious breakfast - Good sofas, very helpful front desk and shuttle service, relaxed atmosphere. Needs a refresh, rooms and onsen. The coffee at breakfast isn’t good.
- Penelope (10/5): -
- Barrie (10/5): Lovely, breakfast was the best - Onsen was priceless, any time at night whenever you want. Nothing
- Tsun Kei (6/5): Disappointing onsen outweighs other good effort - Great location, good breakfast, nice staff Onsen area is too old, dirty and has too much dripping water from the roof; badly needs refurbishment. This is the worst onsen experience I have ever had in Japan.
- Wan Ying (10/5): -
- Brian (9/5): A truly exceptional stay. Would not hesitate to visit again and again and again. - Our stay at Hotel Kougakuro was absolutely delightful. The warm welcome each morning, along with the delicious breakfasts, made every day special. The hospitality and helpful assistance from all staff—whether arranging lift tickets, booking restaurants, or recommending the best miso ramen in town—was truly exceptional. When we had to leave.
- Emma (10/5): -
- Joe (10/5): - Mieko and her staff do an impeccable job. Great onsen, rooms, and breakfast. Close to the ski lift and everything in town. Nothing
- Anna (10/5): Fabulous authentic Japanese stay - I loved the onsen (indoor and outdoor), the traditional rooms and breakfast, and the staff were so nice and helpful. Mieko was really excellent in helping us get lift tickets, bus shuttle, dinner reservations, luggage delivery, etc. She and her staff made it so easy and comfortable to stay at the hotel that it was a lovely experience for our first time in Myoko. Thank you so much for everything! Nothing
- Jake Ng (10/5): Fantastic stay - Mieko-san and the rest of the team are super! It was well organized and breakfast + dinner are tasty.
The room is big and comfortable with nice mountain view.. Close to the ski lift and there are many restaurants around.
We will definitely stay here again in the future.
- Ming Chuen (5/5): Well, if you only look for an accommodation to stay at, it can be considered.if you demand more services, this may not b - Location, close to the skiing slopes Not so clean, daily house keeping is just fair.
Stains on the kimono jacket. Towels were not cleared during half of our stay, we brought to the staff ourselves.
Don’t except they tidy the tatami beds everyday in the morning like most of the other hotels, and set up again at night. The beds are set up on the first day and won’t be closed again. Beds are only being make up (tidy) every four days, not to mention bedsheet change.
Food that can be ordered daily is very so so, I would say the ramen is rather bad.
- Joshua (10/5): Perfect and would recommend to anyone - The staff are amazing / accommodating and very helpful roomsrooms are very clean and beds were very comfortable. The Onsen was amazing definitely would stay again next time I’m in myoko
- Ivy (8/5): All is great! - Japan room was really cosy and nice and clean and with a nice scenery. Breakfast is great too. Staff is helpful as well. We also booked a non Japan room at 3rd floor, it’s nice but shower is difficult to adjust water temperature.
- Umberto (10/5): Awesome, easy and best value for a Japanese experience with conveniences from home. - Awesome cultural experience, convient to some of the best powder skiing, onsen soak after day of skiing, all staff - from the kindest owner to her Japanese and seasonal team from Australia was so helpful... overall the best!
- Thaddeus (8/5): Pleasant stay in a centrally located accommodation. Friendly staff and good breakfast. - Place was well maintained despite the age of the property. The facilities were adequate. Breakfast was nice and filling. Staff were friendly. Loved the lounge area.
- Miguel Angel (8/5): One accommodation not to be missed! - Very helpful to clients facilitating reservations at restaurants. Proximity to slopes and ski rental. Altogether very helpful and attentive. Nothing in particular
- Raul (10/5): Excellent experience, wonderful service. - Excellent experience, wonderful service.
- Zoe (9/5): Mieko and her team were extremely helpful and so friendly would definitely stay again - great facilities and all easy to use
- MChinch (9/5): -
- Stephen (9/5): - Great hotel with lovely management and staff. Food also wonderful. Facilities good.. 5-10 walk to slopes.
- ignatius (9/5): -
- Louise (10/5): - Of course the location was amazing. Staff were also so helpful & friendly. Rooms were traditional & very comfortable
- Eve (10/5): HIGHLY RECOMMEND - Excellent value for money. Mieko was a wonderful host (and owner) she was always available to help with any questions. The rooms were spacious and beds/bedding very comfortable. Mieko even had a treat of beers and chocolate in the fridge for us on arrival. The buffet breakfast was included and sensational. Onsen was beautiful with an inside and outside bathing area. The shared lounge area cosy with an open fire and comfy couches plus a bar and great restaurant. 10min walk to the slopes and 5min walk to the main street with all the restaurants. They also provide a shuttle to/from the bus/train stop. We will be back for sure.
- Gavin (7/5): Owner and staff very helpful - Location to ski fields and restaurants Property a little out dated
- emily (8/5): -
- ellen (10/5): Awesome stay - Meiko is an absolute star! So helpful and knowledgeable about the area.
Good wide variety at breakfast.
Close to the ski slopes.
- Julynn (9/5): - Location was superb, close to the restaurants and the slope. Facilities were also clean and well-maintained. Breakfast provided was delicious! The wifi is really weak
- Cooper (10/5): -
- Ken (8/5): Comfortable, good location for skiing, friendly staff, dated facilities - The proprietors were extremely helpful. They can arrange transportation of luggage, have discount coupons for the ski resorts, and could answer all our questions. Most of the staff are Aussies or Kiwis, and there were some young Vietnamese in training as well. All were friendly. Breakfast included Japanese traditional items such as rice, salmon or mackerel, miso soup, Japanese omelet, and small side dishes. Fried eggs were made to order and there were pancakes, cereal, yogurt, dried persimmons, and various breads and pastries. The smoothies were very good. The coffee was very average. The hotel is right off the main drag where most of the shops and restaurants are located. It's a couple hundred meters uphill to the closest ski lift and ticket office for Akakura Onsen, and closer to the shuttle bus stop that runs between Akakura Onsen and Akakura Kanko. The hotel is very dated, though comfortable and homey. It was the only hotel we stayed at in Japan that did not have heated toilet seats. The ski storage room was a dimly lit shed with ancient ski racks that couldn't hold modern skis.
- Tara (10/5): Best place in Akakura Onsen for a ski holiday. - The service provided at Kogakuro is excellent, the location couldn’t be better. The rooms are spacious and clean, we will just keep coming back!
- Kirren (9/5): Absolutely perfect in every way! - The location of the property is excellent. Close to the Main Street for restaurants. Close to the chair lift and close to the shuttle bus stop to access other mountain areas.
The staff that work here are exceptional. Very friendly, helpful and polite. The food was great. The Onsen was excellent!
What really makes this property so good is the Manager Meiko. She goes above and beyond to help book restaurants, massages, shuttles, train tickets etc. There isn’t really anything that we didn’t like about the property. The only suggestion would be to have the bar open a bit longer for food.
- Peter (9/5): -
- Shaun (9/5): - Good breakfast.
- Rohan - Produce Art (10/5): Couldn't of picked a better place, we had an amazing time thanks to Mieko and her team! - Mieko and her lovely Staff! The onsen, the location, buffet breakfast
- Zara (10/5): Awesome experience staying here! - We enjoyed our stay! Everything was excellent and Mieko assisted with whatever queries we had. The breakfast was very tasty, and the location was very convenient.
- Noel (10/5): Great hotel and with lovely staff - We had such a great time at Kogakuro. The staff is super friendly and helpful. Our room was great and we loved going to the Onsen every day after skiing. The vibe in the hotel was relaxed and in the evening we played cards in the bar area next to the warm fireplace. The staff helped us with dinner bookings every day, as almost all the places were booked out.
- Cathy (9/5): A wonderful welcoming stay at a a lovely hotel. - Kougakuro is perfect for a skiing holiday. It is exceptionally staffed and cleaned. The buffet breakfast was delicious with plenty of western and Japanese options. They also serve a delicious in house dinner (extra cost), but there are lots of restaurants nearby. Mieko is available to help with information about everything to do with hotel and logistics of lifts etc. She is very helpful. It has quite spacious rooms by Japanese standards, and two awesome onsens for both women and men. It honestly has everything you need. There is a lovely living space for relaxing in front of fireplace afterwards (but you can also relax in room). They organise a private free shuttle service to and from Myoko train station, which is useful. There is a shuttle bus nearby to akakura kanko resort. The hotel was around a 5minute walk to Akakura Onsen quad, and there are two very good ski hire venues within a 2 minute walk. The ski hire option being close was very useful and I would highly recommend Aoyama sports. The pillows are a little firm, but this was pretty typical of Japan.
- Rebecca (9/5): - Very friendly staff. Our room was comfortable, warm and spacious. Breakfast each morning was tasty and filling. Kogakuro is close to the main street with easy access to the ski lift. Nothing
- Tiffany (10/5): -
- peiling (8/5): -
- Rebecca (10/5): Great stay would definitely recommend - Location was fabulous the staff were very kind and helpful
- Maria (8/5): Basic but super comfy and homey. Great value for what you pay for, and just a wonderful family-run place. - The service is great! Mieko-san was super responsive and super understanding about various changes I made to my booking. She also helped to make reservations for dinner and kept me updated on any requests I had. The service staff were always so friendly and polite. Breakfast was delicious! Location is amazing, so close to all the food and shops you need, including gear rental and just a little walk to the ski lift. Onsen was also great! The toilets are a bit outdated but still functional!
- mark (10/5): Great family ski trip - Lovely team
All staff friendly but Mieko was amazing and helped us from long before our arrival until when we left, it felt like everyday I was asking for something and she smile and was happy to help
The owner went out of his way to help us as we got stuck in snow at station so he collected us (so kind)
Onsen was lovey too
Easy walk to lots of restaurants, bars and the ski slopes Nothing - all good
- Natalie (8/5): Very memorable stay - amazing buffet breakfasts - loved the pancakes - Lovely helpful staff & very clean rooms & facilities
- K (10/5): -
- Joanne (10/5): - Amazing staff, lots of help organising everything.
- Rory (10/5): -
- Brett (10/5): -
- William (9/5): Great stay, will definitely be back. - The hotel was close to the ski lifts and restaurants. The staff were so very helpful and answered any of our questions. The breakfasts were excellent and set us up for a day on the slopes. At the end of a skiing day, the onsen was a welcome relief.
- Graeme (9/5): - The location, close to restaurants, close to ski lifts, close to inter resort bus stops ,
The staff were excellent, happy and helpful with any requests, booking restaurants, luggage transfers, train and bus tickets
Great breakfasts
- Wong (10/5): -
- steven (10/5): - Mieko provides a wealth of local knowledge. If you wanted to know anything, she would always advise. Food and accommodation was great as well.
- Ashleigh (7/5): -
- Adrian (9/5): -
- Lenneke (8/5): -
- Wesley (8/5): Excellent service provided by the friendly staff - Great location. Very helpful staff A little run-down.
- Sally (10/5): We will definitely be back. Great location, lovely onsen and wonderful staff. - The location for skiing was excellent and the ski hire was just around the corner. An absolutely delicious and varied breakfast was served every morning and we loved the open fireplace to sit beside after a day on the mountain. Mieko the owner is delightful and provided exceptional service helping us with our transport home and her local knowledge was invaluable.
- Paul (10/5): The best snowboard holiday staying in the best place - Mieko, her husband and the team where very welcoming and provided the highest service
Mieko also spoke very good English and helped us with anything we needed help with.
The hotel is also really well laid out with chill out lounge and good food options and drinks in the hotel lounge or restaurant area
Also inside and outside onsen where just the best after snowboarding all day and on rest days
The breakfast was excellent and had many Western & Japanese options. Again with excellent staff serving.
The hotel is ideally located in town and very close to Akukara Onsen ski field. Also close to shuttle buses for the other fields also
Shuttle bus can also be arranged with the hotel from Myoko Kogen station if let them know in advance
The also offer discounted ski field passes and shuttle bus tickets
Simply put, a wonderful stay in a fantastic hotel in the beautiful area of Myoko. Nothing
- Gregory (10/5): The perfect place to stay in Myoko - Everything about Kogakuro was perfect. The concierge, Meiko, was amazing, incredibly helpful with general advice, restaurant booking, transfers. The hotel was spotlessly clean and tidy, the rooms super comfortable. The onsen is fabulous. Great location at the top of the main street, easy walk to restaurants, ski hire and ski lift is nearby. I could not fault anything about our stay at Kogakuro. Will definitely stay here again when I return to Myoko. Nothing
- Scott (10/5): This hotel is exceptional and I will be coming back. - This hotel is exceptional. The staff went well beyond for an english speaking guest. They assisted with dinner reservations and train tickets. The hotel collected us from the train station and returned us to the station when they had just had 40 cms of snow!
- graceee (7/5): -
- Jordan (10/5): Faultless. - Amazing.
All the staff were extremely welcoming and helpful with everything you could think of.
We came for skiing, and it was a perfect location for the mountains as well as food and drinks in the afternoon/night.
Cannot fault anything about the place.
Breakfast that is included is delicious.
Yes, it’s a little bit tired of a building - but that’s what you expect in older Japan. It was a highlight of our trip.
- Jason (9/5): Great location and staff - Mieko and team are exceptionally friendly and so helpful in making your stay enjoyable. Service provided goes way above expectations from booking dinners to collecting our luggage from the local black cat depot to minimise any delays in getting on the snow. The service really is outstanding. Location is great with a short walk to lifts, restaurants and bus terminal for travelling to other snow resorts, the buffet breakfast is amazing…and those pancakes! Would definitely stay here again when next visiting Myoko. The facilities are on the dated side, but that is a side note that is easy overshadowed by the exceptional service the team provides.
- Brian.Ford (10/5): -
- Caley (10/5): - Staff were incredibly friendly and helpful! We had a train cancellation and Mieko was so helpful in getting us to Myoko. Would recommend to anyone!
- Dene (8/5): Great place situated close to the lifts. Great breakfast and loved the Onsen. - Great food and Onsen was fantastic. Location, right in heart of town. Nothing
- John (10/5): -
- Jack (10/5): -
- Sophie (10/5): Incredible stay. Solo female traveler who felt safe and comfortable - I loved the space of the room.
The breakfast was incredible. So much choice and so well cooked There was nothing I didn’t like.
- Peter (10/5): -
- Della (10/5): Every thing we needed was taken care of quickly. Such a wonderful staff! - Helpfulness
- Sarah (8/5): Great stay, so close to everything. Mieoko was a wonderful host, she was there to help in anyway possible. One of the be - Great location, amazing staff and wonderful service.
- Peter (10/5): Perfect location, great staff and awesome onsen - Great location, excellent breakfast, friendly owners and staff.
- Darren (9/5): Great location, well setup for skiing and boarding. Famtastic breakfast and staff. Recommend highly. - Staff were ever so helpful and polite. Went out of their way to assist and always available. Breakfast was great and the near ski in ski out was so close to Main Street and restaurants. Like many properties in Japan, the property is old. But if you know what to expect, this is a fantastic property in a great location made even better by the owners.
- James (10/5): Wonderful, hated to leave. - Great place, superb staff especially Mieko who is fantastic. When I was there, my team lost the Super Bowl in overtime. But I was so appreciative of Zac and Luka’s helping me set up the TV so I could watch it live.
- Andrew (10/5): Perfect stay in Myoko Kogen. - 3rd time staying here and it's just as great as the previous visits. Mieko makes your stay perfect and will help you with anything you need. Great location for ski resort access, and restaurants at night. Daily buffet breakfast is fantastic as is the natural Onsen. Highly recommend.
- Leanne (10/5): -
- Ana (9/5): Great location and amazing breakfast!, - It was a charming comfortable hotel right at the top of the town very easy walking to restaurants hire places bus etc also walk out back of property to the Akakura Onsen ski area. The breakfast was amazing!! Full buffet of Japanese and western food and drinks. Loved the onsen! The owner was THE most helpful person I have ever met on my travels! Nothing was too hard she totally went out of her way to be helpful in fact all the stuff were happy and helpful. Totally loved this place and would recommend to anyone. We will definitely be back thank you for a wonderful time. Nothing
- Alex (10/5): - Meiko was amazing!
- Diane (8/5): Great introduction to Japanese culture and people - Good location lovely helpful people Had odour in our entry to room- a sewerage smell 🥺
- Bradley (2/5): Terrible value, run down accommodation, run like a youth hostel - The onsen is quite nice and the breakfast was good. I really can't understand the endless positive reviews here. Perhaps they paid a lot less. I've never paid so much for so little.
The room was large, but extremely dated and run down, with paint falling of the walls, water stains all over, and small bugs everywhere. Terrible 7-11 style ultra blue/white light.
The shower was unusable. It was mounted at bellybutton height and shot out about four microscopic needles of water that would take several minutes to fill one cup. We had to remove the hand shower head and use it as a hose.
From reading reviews you'd get the impressions that this is Japanese run hotel. It is not. It is presumably Japanese owned, but most of the running is delegated to a bunch of untrained, presumably very cheap, teenage Australians on their working ski holiday. When off duty, they treat the place as their own play room.
They complain loudly about various guest between themselves, seemingly not caring that everyone can hear them.
The communal lounge area would have been nice, but the owner forbids you from even eating your own potato crisps there, during 'operating hours'. Operating hours are the several hours in the evening when half of the teenage Australian staff serve drinks to the other half, and they all swear and laugh loudly while playing cards etc.
- Lisa (9/5): A perfect place from which to enjoy Myoko - Great family feel, excellent location and breakfast and staff couldn’t have been more helpful in booking restaurants, organising trains and lift passes and making us feel at home
- Charlesworth (10/5): -
- Adam (10/5): An awesome place to stay. Highly recommended. - Excellent hospitality, location & facilities.
- Eva (10/5): Right in Town, great breakfasts and fantastic staff. - The breakfasts were fabulous this property. Every morning, we had a good selection of western and eastern options. Mieko’s pancakes were a real hit with the kids.
We loved using the onsen each night.
The property offers a free shuttle to and from Myoko Kogen station. We were warmly greeted by Cooper on the first day of our stay at the station.
But the real highlight of this property are the staff and customer service. It is a family-run property who care about their guests. We will be back. Nothing at all!
- Kuah (9/5): Fabulous - It’s in a quaint village with a nostalgic feel. We love and enjoy the stay in Myoko. Everyone was so helpful. We could ski at Lotte Arai or akakura. We drove from Tokyo to myoko. A 4WD is recommended to drive there in snowy weather. Skis rental is just next to the hotel. A nice Xmas eve party in the village is a very nice touch, free sausage, free sake and beer and fireworks! Lovely! Special thank to Mieko and staffs. They are all so helpful and also aoyoma sports for their help. We would love to go back again for sure. a more updated room.
