- Andrew (10/5): Incredible overnight experience. Highly recommend to anyone staying in this town! - This was by far the best overnight experience we've had. We were greeted by our host with a quick tour of her property. There were all sorts of complimentary drinks, and an absolutely delicious chocolate and carrot cake waiting in our room. After hiking all day on the Fisherman's Trail, this truly hit the spot, along with a few Super Bocks of course! In the morning, our host cooked us an amazing breakfast, and even brought us extra for us to take on the trail for later. I couldn't recommend this place more if you are visiting!

- Natalia (9/5): Amabilidad total orientada a cada detalle - Sentirme como un invitado en una casade familia local Me gustó todo.
- KaeyH_13 (10/5): Incredible Hospitality - If you want to experience the welcoming hospitality of staying with your favorite grandparents, this is the place. Such wonderful, caring hosts make your stay much more enjoyable - I truly appreciated them! You get way too much food for breakfast, lots of snacks, plenty of local knowledge and assistance - all this within walking distance to anything in the town. A terrific option, especially for anyone doing the Rota Vicentina. Everything was very comfortable - bed, space, ability to control temperature, water temperature, etc. You have access to a guest kitchen and extra seating areas. I'm very glad I stayed here and would do so again. You will need to pay for your stay in cash, but there are a number of ATMs in town.
- Nicola (10/5): Friendly, warm & hospitable… and fab breakfast! - Staying here is like staying with family - you feel welcome and well looked after. My room was spotlessly clean, there was chocolate cake and a flask of hot water to make tea in my room, and loads of welcoming communal areas (living rooms, balcony space, and also a kitchen we could use for tea/coffee as well as complimentary beer and wine in the fridge!). Breakfast was next level! Fruit platters, granola & yoghurt, bacon & eggs, toast, jams, good coffee… all beautifully presented. Then we were offered to pack a picnic lunch from the table, including another slice of cake!
Idalia is warm and welcoming and ready to help in any way (as the ferry wasn’t running yet, so she offered to drive the hiking guests to the other side of the Mira).
All in all, a wonderful stay!

- Alessia (10/5): An unforgettable stay - When I read the reviews of this place before booking, I thought they might have been a bit exaggerated. Instead, I must admit that I had one of the best hospitality experiences ever. Mrs. Idalia welcomed us warmly, provided everything we could need in the room, and even surprised us with a welcome treat (tea and a delicious chocolate cake).
The house is beautiful, spacious, with two terraces and complete privacy. Mrs. Idalia lives downstairs, while the guest rooms are upstairs (with a separate entrance available until a certain time).
Breakfast is simply outstanding – generous, varied, and freshly prepared every morning, with fruit, eggs and bacon, toast, jams, yogurt, cereals, and more. The room was spotless, and they even provided disposable slippers.
This guest house offers services that, in my opinion, are on par with a 5-star hotel. I honestly couldn’t find a single flaw, and I will definitely return! There’s absolutely nothing to complain about

- M (10/5): Beautiful, comfortable, delicious breakfast. - I would rate it 11/10 if it was possible. The location is pefect. The host lady is very kind and generous and staff is very polite. A scrumptious breakfast was served at a beautiful terrace, pieces of a delicious chocolate cake were offered as a welcome and goodbye treats.
- Anouk (10/5): Everything was perfect! Feeling at home immediately. - One step inside and you feel so welcome!
- Elizabeth (10/5): A warm and welcoming first visit! - Picture a visit to stay with your favorite aunt in her traditional family home where she will spoil you for your entire visit - such was our visit with Idália! The location in V.N. de Milfontes is pretty perfect, right in the center of the original town, very close to the river Mira and the fortress/castle, but away from the main drag. We made use of the guest kitchen and living room upstairs on a few cool evenings to play cards and sip some excellent Alentejo red wine. Gorgeous wild beaches to explore each day along with sections of the Fisherman‘s Trail. A perfect place to experience Portugal! The parking is tricky, as expected. We were able to park on the narrow street right in front of the guest house, but did depart with a new scratch down one door. There is a public lot nearby that might be a better choice.
- Heather (10/5): Exceptional -
- hors82 (10/5): Superb hospitality - This accommodation was booked for us though our tour company for walking the Rota Vicentina. The hospitality was second to none. Greeted by fresh orange juice and chocolate cake. Complimentary drinks- beer, wine etc and shared terrace area. Everywhere was very clean, although a little old fashioned and cluttered for my personal taste. However the hosts were lovely and couldn’t do enough to help. The breakfast was amazing with containers provided to take away a packed lunch which kept us going all through each days walk. Glad that we stayed 2 nights. Also very well situated for bars and restaurants in the old part of town.
- Estelle (10/5): Exceptional - Host is one of the best I've met, very generous and attentive to her guests! She welcomed us as if we were in our own home and was super flexible. She let us stay in the living room after checkout to do home office, came in to check on us and see if we needed anything. Breakfast was incredible, very complete and tasty 😋 and there are even drinks and snacks available. The house is in the old city centre, close to the beach. You can walk along the coast with the most magnificent views 😍 A bit noisy but apart from that nothing to say.
- Hans (10/5): Exceptional -
- Agne (10/5): Amazing host, heart-warming hospitality, great location - If there was one trip I would recommend for everyone from our stay in Portugal, this would be IT. It has such a nice 'feels-like-home' vibe and hospitality is through the roof. Our only regret is that we did not not stay longer.
- Stothers (10/5): Best stay in all of Portugal if you are going to VN Milafonte - Incredible attention to detail in every aspect from greeting to restaurant bookings and breakfast on the gorgeous patio! Too many extras to mention. This hotel
Is not like any other, the owner gives her personal touch 100 percent and has not missed a thing! Absolute beautiful experience! Nothing
- Naomi (10/5): Lovely authentic local pension. Very charming and generous host! - Wonderful host and staff, warm welcome with fresh squeezed orange juice and chocolate cake. Lovely atmosphere. There was nothing I didn't like.
- Iona (10/5): A wonderful experience & one I will remember for a long time! - Idalia was a wonderful, kind host. Breakfasts on the sunny terrace were delicious, the homemade chocolate cake was so good & the bed was incredibly comfortable. So many lovely touches. A magical place for a holiday! Nothing!
- Anne (10/5): Absolutely wonderful - The warm welcome
The comfortable bed
The delicious breakfast Nothing
- Eugen (10/5): I would warmly recommend this hotel to friends and family - This a fantastic small family run hotel. We liked the warm welcome and the friendliness of the owner Dona Idalia and her staff. Everything was clean and tidy and we felt right at home. The breakfast was delicious and overall we had a great time. Nothing, really
- אבנר (10/5): Very nice family B&B - Very nice family B&B. Perfect location. In the center of the old town. A short walk from the marvolous Vila Nova de Milfontes beach, the Mira river, and the local restaurants. The room was cozy and clean, although not new nor renovated. Nice terrace, where you can sit and enjoy with free included drink. Very good breakfast. Great wellcoming and helpfull owner and staff.
- TravellerAng (10/5): Charming bed and breakfast - You won’t find a more charming guesthouse to stay than this. The owner is delightful and guests so well catered for by her. The top floor is for guests with a communal living room and kitchen with lots of goodies (free). It is well located in Villa Nova do Milfontes on the Rota Vincentina. The breakfast is amazing and beautifully arranged!
- MplsGlobetrotterNB (10/5): A wonderful stay! - We so enjoyed our stay here! Idalia makes you feel so welcome from the moment you arrive (with fresh squeezed juice and her famous chocolate cake!) It was as if you were staying in your own family's home. Rooms were clean, patios were lovely and breakfast and staff was great. Staying here makes you feel like you are staying in a family home. We loved it!
- Alison (10/5): A truly unique and exceptional property run by the most wonderful hosts. - This is truly an exceptional property. We were greeted with fresh orange juice and chocolate cake. The room was comfortable, perfectly clean and had everything we needed. Our bikes were secure in the courtyard and we were made to feel very welcome. The breakfast was truly amazing and our host provided us with foil to take some of the left overs with us for lunch. This is a family run B&B and the most lovely experience.
- Johanna (10/5): Exceptional - One of the nicest hospitality I ever encountered!
Perfect location to follow the fishermen's trail.
- ourportugaljourney (10/5): Eating Chocolate Cake in a 17th Century Guest House - Driving down the narrow cobblestone village streets of Vila Nova de Milfontes, you can easily miss the door to the Casa do Adro guest house. But on a recent road trip and with a reservation for a two-night stay, my husband thought he saw the sign and stopped the car at the door that we hoped was the right place. It was late afternoon when I hopped out of the car and rang the doorbell. A well-dressed and stylish older woman with a shawl over her shoulders answered. I wasn’t sure she knew any English and my Portuguese can only take me so far, but we were in luck! Guest house owner Idália spoke English, and before I could ask if we were in the right place, she smiled and said, “Welcome. Yes, this is the guest house.”
Owner Idália Costa José and her husband António Costa José live at Casa do Adro. As we walked into the main area of the home, Idália explained that it has been in her family since it was built in the 17th century and after the village church was built, her family home was the next to be constructed for a total of only six homes that were in the village at the time.
A retired banking executive, Idália and her family lived in Lisbon but would escape to the family home in the village whenever possible. When she retired, Idália and her husband left Lisbon to pursue their dream of living full time in Vila Nova de Milfontes and opening part of their home to guests. They have been welcoming guests from all over the world for over twenty-five years.
When you enter the tile floored entry foyer, you feel as if you’ve arrived in your grandma’s home! There are family photos from many generations in frames on every wall, beautiful antique furniture, dried flower arrangements, gorgeous pieces of porcelain bowls, vases, plates, knick knacks, and lace doilies and table runners. This guest house is truly a family home.
It’s also a well-maintained home! A visitor would never guess that it is as old as it is. This family has lovingly maintained and updated their property including a large kitchen, insulated windows, modern plumbing, and heat and air conditioning, without compromising any of its 17th century Portuguese village charm!
Guest rooms. There are two guest rooms on the first floor, although we didn’t see them during our stay. There are four guestrooms on the second floor, accessible only by a staircase. Idália escorted us upstairs. As we ascended the stairs, directly in front of us, paned glass double doors led to a rooftop patio for guests, complete with tables, chairs, and umbrellas.
To the left, there was a guest dining and living room (known as a lounge) with a working fireplace, books, games, and an antique server with a variety of complimentary apéritifs for guests. To the right, there was a small guest kitchen with refrigerator, complete with complimentary fruit, beer and wine, a coffee maker with a choice of coffees, teas, dishes, cups, utensils, bottled water, and microwave. Down a hallway there were four rooms, with each room named for a different flower. Our room, named the Girassol (sunflower), was at the end of the hallway.
Upon entering our light-filled room, I was immediately impressed with its spaciousness and cleanliness. The room consisted of a double bed (king size), top quality linens and window treatments, polished wood floors, side tables and lamps, a comfortable chair, a desk, a television, and a large closet as well as a modern private bathroom. Everything was tastefully decorated and colorful.
Our room had a small balcony that overlooked the village street and a second patio shared by the other three guest rooms, with tables and chairs.
On the desk in our room, Idália pointed to an insulated water bottle filled with hot water for tea as well as teacups. Also, there was a carafe of water with two glasses. On a tray there was a plate with two slices of chocolate cake. Apparently, Idália is famous for making a most decadent chocolate cake. Our mouths began to water!
After dinner in a local tasca recommended by Idália, we returned to our room and enjoyed the cake! It was the most delicious chocolate cake we have ever tasted - moist, dense and not too sweet. We retired to the comfortable bed and as I drifted off to sleep, I could feel the energy of the little village, its history and its ancestors and I felt a stronger connection to Portugal.
The room rate includes breakfast, and it is served in the first-floor dining room or in your own room if you prefer. We elected to have breakfast downstairs in the dining room. Ana, one of Idália’s three assistants, served us starting with a fresh pot of coffee, a pot of warmed milk for the coffee, a carafe of freshly squeezed orange juice, an array of fresh fruits artfully arranged, a plate of the most delicious buttered toast, a plate of untoasted bread slices, butter, jam and honey, a plate of cured meats and cheeses, and prepared-to-order scrambled eggs and bacon.
It seemed as if we hardly made a dent in the food but there was nothing to worry about! Ana came into the dining room with a little take-away box and a roll of aluminum foil and said in (sort of) English, “picnic.” And indeed, we enjoyed a delicious lunch later in the day on the rooftop patio from the leftovers of breakfast.
Idália is a smart businesswoman and she doesn’t skimp on what’s important to the comfort of her guests. The bed linens are top quality and the beds are comfortable. The rooms, bathrooms, and common areas are exceptionally clean. There are thoughtful touches such as lavender body gel, slippers if you need them, a full length mirror, a rack to put your luggage on. Breakfast isn’t a buffet – it’s made especially for each guest. If she thinks you’re chilly sitting in the upstairs lounge in the evenings, she’ll bring up blankets made in Portugal to keep you warm. She’s knowledgeable about the area and offers to make dinner reservations for you if you’d like or make suggestions as to how to spend your day.
The morning that we were leaving, we paid the bill (cash only – no credit/debit cards) and were presented with a handled bag with the guest house name imprinted on it, a full-color printed brochure, two complimentary bottles of water, and of course, two slices of chocolate cake (good marketing!).
Award winning. Idália and António’s charming 17th century guest house has won numerous awards including awards from Trip Advisor and Booking.com. They are proud of their Portuguese heritage and of their family home, and work hard to make sure guests have a memorable, local village experience. Many of their guests are repeat customers who have become like family. A good portion of guests come from all over the world and stay at Casa do Adro to enjoy hiking or cycling the Rota Vincentina.
As Idália said to me when we first arrived, “While you’re here, this is your home.” And then of course, there’s always (chocolate) cake!

Some on the ground floor w/window opening directly on the narrow street. Might be noisy during the night in high season.
Worth to stay.
- Pedro (9/5): Superb - Family-run place, extremely nice people. Very well located, amazing breakfast. Times for check-in/check-out and also for breakfast are relaxed. Overall the experience exceeded my expectations. Would definitely come back. Bed was slightly noisy, but aside from that I have nothing else to add.
- Daan (10/5): Hospitality at its finest. - Hospitality at its finest. Absolute gem, super friendly, gorgeous rooms and amazing breakfast. Thank you very much!
- K1773DTsimond (8/5): A beautiful traditional family home and guesthouse - I stayed at Casa do Adro with my wife for 2 nights while walking a section of the Rota Vicentina in May 2022. We had a twin bedded room on the ground floor with a window that looked onto the street. The beds were comfortable with high quality bedlinen. Our own beautiful bathroom was nearby across a public corridor. Everything was spotlessly clean. We were made welcome on arrival and the staff were friendly and helpful at all times. Breakfast was spectacular. The hotel is a guesthouse with the owners living onsite, so one is staying in someone's traditional old family home.
