- Olivia (9/5): Fantastic 2 night stay in a beautiful studio apartment - Beautiful sea views, spacious rooms
- Christopher (9/5): -
- Joyce (9/5): Pleasant stay overall - Location excellent. Staff very friendly and helpful Outdoor pool unusable as not heated. New sunbeds so short they are more like chairs and very uncomfortable.
- Anne (9/5): -
- Gene (9/5): A perfectly located large hotel with two beautiful swimming pools and lots of amenities. - A large well located hotel with amazing swimming pools and fantastic breakfast. Our studio apartment was huge with amazing views of the ocean. Two very large and beautiful swimming pools overlooking the sea. Lots of bars, restaurants, and activities located around hotel. One of the best located hotels in Funchal between the Town Centre and Hotel Zone. Payment for the hotel was very confusing as I had payment on arrival and they kept messaging me to pay in advance. Also, hotel was a bit dated in the Madeira Beach section but very clean and comfortable.
- Roel (8/5): -
- Márcia (1/5): Não gostei, não recomendo. - Do Hall de entrada Do apartamento, gestão de reserva, limpeza do apartamento.
- MrsLesleyR-J (10/5): Our second home - As always Pestana Vacation Club at the Carlton, never disapoint.
We always look forward to coming back each year.
Owners relations team are exceptional and such good value as an owner on options and a timeshare.
The housekeeping do an amazing job with the little towel displays and the onside shop is a great addition to the Vacation club.
- Helen (8/5): Very good - Excellent locatiion. Very clean. Staff were great. Mattress was really hard
- _andyhibbert1245 (10/5): Great holiday stay - This is the third time we have been here, the hotel rooms are really great. We upgraded to junior suite with balcony and pool view. The room is huge with jacuzzi bath, multi spray shower two wash basins and bidet .
We have 3 small private balconies and this makes our stay even better this time . There are several pools to use( sea water) A Spar room and steam rooms . Small shops as well
Breakfast is a buffet style and there is plenty of it and it suits all tastes ( plus having a glass of bubbly in the morning is fine )
There are pool bars and a pub bar attached to the hotel. Easy to get a meal at these , an evening bar and restaurant
The Hotel is situated about fifteen minutes from Funchal a very easy walk . There are so many restaurants and places to eat it makes it easy to find something . This is a group of hotels and there are quite a few in the area which are Pestana hotels . If they are as good as this one you cannot go wrong
Staff are very friendly and helpful. If the weather is good you will have a fab time here and lots of things to do
This hotel does seem to have an older generation in it but that suits us fine as it’s a relaxing holiday that we want
5 stars all the way. Well done to the holiday group, and all the staff
- Julie1808 (8/5): Should have been a five but the lack of entertainment is a big shame - I love it here. The staff are so amazing and nothing is too much trouble. Really clean and lots of different spaces. So I would highly recommend it.
So why not a 5. Simply because they seem to have stopped having so much entertainment in the Taverna Bar. We look forward to going down there where to atmosphere is good to listen to the bands. Now they don’t have them every day and on one day they even moved the music to the Taverna Grill so no one in the bar could see it. A big mistake we watched couple after couple come into the bar and turn around and go out again.
So I’d give you 5/5 next time if you sort that out!! Marcelino and the other waiters in the Taverna bar are excellent by the way. This is no reflection on them at all.
- Carlos (8/5): Great location - The breakfast and the location were great. The beds where hard and not to comfortable.
- hotfootScotland (10/5): A lovely surprise…Obrigado - We were allocated a two bedroom apartment on arrival at the beach club … wonderful surprise and lovely accommodation. Two bedrooms, two bathrooms, two balconies, two televisions! Lots of closet space and a comfortable living room with well equipped kitchen. Thank you so much Pestana Beach Club for this great upgrade!
Our weather was perfect every day. So appreciated after the long, stormy winter we have had here this year. Enjoyed exploring new and older parts of Funchal…it never disappoints. We used a variety of restaurants and supermarkets and,of course, the market. Food was excellent and people were so friendly.
Hotel staff are exceptional and Alexander at reception is outstanding. Thank you to Gillian at the beach club who worked a bit late for us on a Friday evening! Cocktail party once again gave an opportunity to meet and mingle with fellow members and we hope to meet up with them again in future visits.
All in all a most enjoyable break and we hope to return again…and again.
- janld2017 (10/5): A great holiday. - It was a fantastic experience staying here. All the staff are friendly and helpful but professional. Rooms clean and comfortable. The pub is a great place for a good value meal. Happy hour good as well but sometimes the music is a bit loud. Will definitely go back again.
- June (8/5): Very nice stay. Love the location looking out to the sea. - Mattress was very hard and uncomfortable.
Parts dug in to side while trying to sleep.
- Cathy (4/5): Gorgeous pool facilities, view and location. Room wasn’t great. - We stayed here one night before a very early flight. The staff were very accommodating when we arrived early (11am) as our previous accommodation elsewhere on the island had an early check-out. Although our room wasn’t ready, we went to the pool and they stored our luggage.
The location is great for a quick (or longer) visit to Funchal.
The view from the rooms and pool areas are fantastic and it’s so great to have access to a sea-swimming spot. The rooms and corridors in this part of the hotel are dated (although this is probably reflected in the price). Inside it doesn’t feel 5 star. The air conditioning in our room didn’t work, which we didn’t realise until we were putting two small children to bed (so couldn’t get anyone to come and look at it). As a result, we didn’t sleep at all before our 3am start for our flight as it was roasting.
- Rui (6/5): Pleasant -
- pamelawL5581NY (6/5): Going down market. - We have been going to the Beach Club for many years and unfortunately it seems to be deteriorating. The bathroom towels were shabby and fraying and there seems to be some “corner cutting “ going on. The garden pool is lovely since it’s redesign some years ago but it is now spoiled by loud music for the aquarobics every morning, followed by silly games . There is an indoor pool where they can go and it would not disturb anyone else. Little things make it seem that the place is going down market and not the 4 star standard that it used to be.
- Dee (10/5): Exceptional -
- Merrifield (8/5): Very good -
- Johanna (7/5): Good -
- bzoow (10/5): Great location, lovely helpful staff - Lovely stay in ocean front studio well equipped. Staff friendly and helpful, big indoor pool and even got some sea swimming in via steps access from hotel.
Good location within easy 15 minute walk to central Funchal or West to Reid's/Lido area.
Definitely be coming again.
- Bjh_5362 (7/5): Good -
- M1327VNchristinel (8/5): Spectacular Ocean Views - We have just returned from 2 weeks at the Carlton Beach Club. We had an issue with the studio room we were allocated for our first week but Ian, our rep, found us a more suitable room. Thank you Ian. However we did have a faulty microwave in this one but nonetheless everything else was fine. For our 2nd week we had booked a 1 bedded apartment but were give a 2 bedded apartment so no complaints there. It had an expansive sea view, was quiet and well equipped for self catering with all appliances working. On a general note we found the hotel to be a nice place to stay and well located. A special mention for Judy at the information desk who clearly loves her job and cheerfully supplied us with bus timetables. Not an easy task with so many bus companies operating on the island.
- Natalie (8/5): overall we had a really pleasant stay at this hotel. Our room was a good size with self catering facilities and a fridg - good location
access to the ocean too big, struggled to get a sunbed
- Odyssey03966566248 (10/5): Christmas in paradise - We come often and always have the friendliest of welcomes, all the staff extremely helpful, location perfect - right on the ocean so it feels as if it’s just you and the sea and yet a short walk into Funchal. As mum to an 8 year old it’s important to have fun things organised and Sissi is incredible - aqua classes, craft and face painting and we will come again and again. Odette in the shop and the team in guest relations always there to help with anything. It’s a home from home.
- robertbS708OZ (10/5): Drinks in the Pub - Back in the pub again last night Braulio made the cocktails for us, and very good they were. Danilo and Leonardo were serving the tables. It was very reassuring to see how quickly they clean the tables and chairs when people leave. Another pleasant evening with a gentleman playing the saxophone.
- Oldbolter (10/5): Back after 2 years - Back after lon Covid break for a long wished for break. The Beach Club are similar to timeshare apartments attached to the Pestana Carlton hotel, with full access to all the hotel facilities. They generally face the sea and therefore have great views. Our 2-bedrom apartment is spacious and comfortable, with effective air con, full kitchen area (incl. dishwasher and fridge) and 2 bathroom/ toilets (one en-suite). There is a small shop in the hotel for basics like milk, etc. The apartments have an excellent daily cleaning service, and pool towels were provided as complimentary. On our balcony we had a table and four chairs as well as 2 sun loungers. Sitting on the balcony watching the sun come up and go down is always a pleasure. Ours were also sun traps and we spent time on balconies rather than by pools.
The Pestana Carlton hotel itself is lovely – all the staff we had contact with were top rate, friendly and helpful. There are outside pools and an inside pool with Jacuzzi and Spa facilities available.
- dennis6611 (6/5): Pestana squeezing the asset - Was booked into the Pestana Promenade but cancelled at short notice and rebooked into the Palms. Unfortunately this is at the bottom of a hill so declined and was then offered the Beach Club. This is the timeshare part of the 5 star Carlton hotel. First impressions the room is ok , comfortable with a small kichenette and an unimpeded sea view. The balcony is small with a table,2 chairs but only a single sunbed. The maid service seemed good but there was always a lingering musty smell in the toilet/ shower room as the air extraction never seemed to be on. Aircon was ok but during the night just blows air around. Food in the restaurant is mixed. Breakfast is varied but underwhelming with the fruit juice awful and fried eggs just cooked in rings from the bottom so either hard yoked or snotty. Pancakes varied some delicious others soggy. Evening dinner mixed. As with buffet food most overcooked and just warm but fresh grilled meats often very good. If there is a dress code I couldn't tell as many men in shorts and flipflops. The pools are good. Indoor and a large salt water pool which at high season is full of kids throwing balls about and generally jumping in but a lacking of sunbeds which may be covid related but it means an 8 o'clock rush to get one. It may say 5 star outside but far from it within although staff are polite and professional and do attempt to make your stay good
- Simonaaj (10/5): Long overdue escape to an island idyll in a comfortable, perfectly situated hotel overlooking the sea. - Moved from our intended venue, Pestana Palms, due to reduced numbers travelling following pandemic restrictions being lifted. Very glad as this is nearer the city centre. Stayed for the full two weeks despite De Pfeffel etc trying to stop us plebs taking a holiday abroad and enjoying ourselves at a location far safer than back home, where the delta (Indian) variant is running rampant.
Staying on a self service basis at the time share facility as our own in Gran Canaria was on the Amber list so have eaten out and had takeaways as well as self-cater.
Accommodation is comfortable, overlooking the sea. It has been quiet due to low numbers, even moreso after 7th June.
Staff are friendly & very helpful. The only slight criticism is that each floor looks the same, so if you're not paying attention when stepping off the lift you may find yourself trying to get into the wrong room. I've done it twice, 5 more to go for a full house.
- jancruising (4/5): Poor facilities and value for money - Standard of furnishings, fixtures and fittings not 5*. Damaged and dated in public areas. Room dusty. Balcony dirty. Indoor pool freezing, virtually unheated, no doubt a cost saving exercise given that the hotel and apartments are virtually empty. Restaurant and bar closed in the evening. Excuse is the local covid curfew but this is a lie because bars and restaurants in hotels are still allowed to open after 7pm. Certainly not nurturing customer loyalty. We've moved on to alternative accommodation. Pestana need to rethink their model given the current and future state of tourism on the island and local competition. Very disappointing.
- sparel (6/5): Definitely not 5-star worthy - We stayed end of October 2020 at the Pestana Madeira Beach Club, which comprises the timesharing apartments attached to the Pestana Carlton. It is a great location but definitely not a 5-star resort.
Apartments: Very spacious with a wonderful, unhindered seaview, and well-equiped kitchenette. And that is more or less all. The apartments were renovated in 2017, but still look outdated. Antique furniture. The washing bassin was clearly replaced, but obviously, the water mains had to be moved, and the old holes were just plugged, in the hope nobody would notice (see picture). Not really 5-star worthy. We also noticed that most door corners were dented, very likely due to the maids "smashing" the vacuum cleaner around, as we found out after seeing the shape of the vacuum cleaners they are using (see picture). Is really nobody from the hotel staff seeing this ?
Room cleaning: After a couple of days, we noticed that the cleaning of the apartment was not performed properly. Crumbs were left on the floor, TV and door edges very dusty (not cleaned in weeks), glass pane from bathtub with water and soap stains. We complained for four days in a row, always being told by the reception, by the housekeeping manager,... that they would talk to the maid. Apparently, everybody was talking to the maid, but nobody bothered checking afterwards if the maid had done her job properly. Again, not really 5-star service.
Breakfast: A bit boring, everyday the same choice, not even the usual pancakes-French toasts-waffles rotation. The fruit juices were really awful, clearly prepared with some artificial flavor and sugar concentrate, and definitely not with fruits. The "orange" juice tasted like an effervescent cold medicine you can purchase at the nearest pharmacy. Definitely not 5-star !
Dinner: We went only once. The very same, boring buffet that you would find in countless cheap hotels around the world. Nothing really typical from Madeira ! Good thing: they have a rather strict dress code, bad thing: it is clearly not enforced. People walking around the dinning room in sport shorts and adilette sandals is not what you would expect in a 5-star hotel. We complained to the restaurant receptionist (who should have advised these guests about the proper dress code), but she was clearly not interested and redirected us to the Maître d' who promised he would speak to these particular guests. Whether it was done, nobody knows.
Fitness room: Here also the strength training equipment hasn't been replaced in probably 10-15 years. Leather benches broken, plastic/rubber handles falling apart.
Pools: Great combination of various outdoor and indoor pools. But having people blasting loud music over Bluetooth loudspeakers around the pool is not really the best way to relax. I don't understand that this is being tolerated.
Overall, the whole hotel looks antiquated and falling apart (another example: the walls at the indoor pool clearly broken, see last picture). Nobody seems to care, or maybe everybody has given up. Pestana is obviously trying to squeeze a few last bucks from this hotel, capitalizing on the Carlton name, but clearly they don't want to invest anything.
- sdwmaps (10/5): Great sea views and pool facilities - Was upgraded to MBC as Miramar was closed. Further from Lido area so no large supermarkets and fewer restaurants around, but enough to manage. Local ATMs charge a fee to withdraw cash. Very clean and Covid secure, with friendly staff. Facilities shared with the Pestana Carlton Hotel. Best parts were the on-site shops (less distance for carrying water) and the views from the balcony. Great choice of pools, with a good variety of depths and variety to keep kids and sunbathers happy as well as quieter indoor pools. Only a studio so cooking facilities basic with fridge, a basic microwave and a two ring hob; but enough for snacks. Mainly used the buffet lunch discount packs for main meals, with a choice of how many days to cover. Found bed was too hard and had to request extra mattress toppers, but quickly supplied. Room service was great, for the first day 12 hour waiting time for the compulsory airport Covid Tests to come back negative.
- BillyCorbs (10/5): Escaping the Winter - We are now convinced travellers to Madeira for all year round good temperatures. The first week in March was no different. The Pestana Madeira Beach Club was a perfect place to stay with 5-star accommodation, easy access to Funchal and surrounded by many excellent restaurants. We will be returning many times!
- AntonyGB (10/5): Another Great Holiday! - We had another great holiday at the Beach Club. We were well looked after and enjoyed the rest after a busy period. We are back in just over two months with our family to celebrate our Golden Wedding!
- Eric960 (10/5): A great place to stay - We love going back to the MBC as the apartments are always kept nice and clean, and have everything you need in them for the time that you actually spend there. The staff are excellent, very helpful and friendly for all your needs. We will look forward to our return.
- ajh64 (10/5): Lovely family break - We apartments have been refurbished recently so all finished to a good standard with walk in showers and separate toilets all with a bidet. Kitchens are well equipped for self catering if that is needed. Super clean standard. All apartments have a wonderful and unbroken view to the Atlantic and are very close to the rocky shore. We had our grandchildren with us and glad to have apartments next to each other, very quiet, we didn't hear anyone else all week. There are a number of outdoor and indoor pools which can be enjoyed at both the Pestana Carlton and the Beach Club itself. Lovely spa. Shop selling basics on site as well as one selling beach and pool toys and another selling gifts and souvenirs. We chose this venue for the children's facilities and we weren't disappointed. Just enough to divert young people when needed but not intrusive to other guests. The reserving of sun beds was disappointing and the removal of towels was not enforced so that often two thirds of sun beds were reserved but not actually in use. Lots of good restaurants on site and also nearby. We used both and all a good standard. Staff more efficient than friendly.
