Guest Reviews
- Joanna (10/5): The best stay of our 3 week holiday. We hired motorbikes for an afternoon and toured the UNESCO National Park just down - It exceeded our expectations, the room, facilities, restaurant and spa were all outstanding. We will visit again.
- Stella Bristing (9/5): -
- BLECHSCHMIDT (10/5): - Les décors et l'ambiance
- Deb (9/5): NW Bali Sanctuary - We loved the Balinese architecture and decor. The gardens and paths made every room seem private. Restaurant meals were delicious. Diving and snorkelling excursions fabulous. Spa treatments excellent. But most of all, the staff were all amazing.
- Monika (10/5): I had a fantastic beautiful stay. I have visited PONDOK Sari before and will hopefully be able to return in the not so d - I liked the beauty of the buildings and nature tropical gardens. The traditional style of building. Absolute fantastic staff all around.
Dive centre attached with very helpful staff.
The hotel and also the pool look so natural in their beauty.
- Aksel (10/5): Lovely resort, feels like home - Lovely traditional Indonesian building style with all modern luxuries and amenities. Lots of privacy, in lovely garden, direct beach access. Personal contact with staff, feels like visiting a lovely family (instead of commercial non-personal resort). Excellent kitchen chef. Great value-for-money.
- Tom (9/5): -
- jean-michel (10/5): Super!!!!

- Raimund (9/5): -
- Joseph (10/5): Perfect escape from modern life! - Incredible location. Rooms are fantastic with Balinese antiques. Very unique vibe. Beautiful garden.
- Jan Willem (8/5): Heerlijke ontspannen week. Schoon strand, super aardig personeel. Zijn hier al twee zomers geweest. Villa's hebben onderhoud nodig.
- Alice (10/5): Exceptional stay, would recommend it - Location, service, accommodation, garden week exceptional
- Anders Tobiesen (9/5): - The hotel is beyond beautiful. The pool, the garden, the beach, the old houses. The staff is sweet, polite and very helpful.
Recommendations for the area
Mangroove Forrest
Menjangan island - we did a snorkeling trip and it was the best coral and fish we ever seen
Tempel tour The waiting time in the restaurant are long. We ate there 6 times for lunch and dinner and the shortest wait was 40 mins while one evening we waited more than 1 hour.
Preise leider recht hoch.
- Michael (8/5): Incredicble location and truly awesome shady restaurant right on the beach. - Amazing location. Clean town and beach. Nice pool area and stunning gardens and natural fish pools. Beachside restaurant is at an epic gorgeous location right on the beach under huge trees. We found the bathroom a bit dodgy. Shower was average and the outdoor bathroom a bit too close to our neighbours outdoor bathroom (noises from private things are easily heard).
- Annie (10/5): Very comfortable place to stay in Pemuteran with a real Balinese style - The location is very convenient for beach access. The booking process and prompt replies to questions via booking.com was excellent and the service provided by Edhy in his communications and at the property was exceptionally good, he is a real asset to the hotel. The buffet breakfast at the hotel during the tourist season was excellent and very convenient to allow flexibility in our holiday. All the staff on the property were very helpful. Liked the traditional wood carving incorporated in the hotel design, felt like the old Bali. Use Karang Divers at the beachfront for your trip to Menjangan, they are very professional and caring. Room 8 is in good central location. No kettle in the standard room but they were happy to provide one upon request, bought coffee/tea at local shop. No fridge in standard rooms.
- Israel (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing people! Amazing place! On reviendra!
- Lindsay (10/5): Fabulous experience - The kindness shown to us by the staff, particularly Edi and Nia (in reception) and Michael in the restaurant was exemplary.
I was unwell for some of the time, the Doctor visited, a car was arranged to take me to hospital, NOTHING was too much trouble.
There were a couple of issues with both the shower, and the air-conditioning, these were attended to straight away.
The choice of food in the restaurant was FABULOUS.
I don't like writing such a positive review, as I want to return next year, and don't want the place overrun with tourists 😁 Nothing really
- Rolf (9/5): Great value for money. I enjoyed my stay - Direct beach access with good quality restaurant at the beach. Direct access for diving, snorkeling, dolfin watching Everything feels a bit run down. Besides that… ask for cabin close to beach and away from the street
- Cheryl (10/5): Exceptional - This was our 2nd stay at the Pondok Sari (the first being 25 years ago). It is even more beautiful now than it was then. There is nothing not to love - everything was perfect for us. The restaurant has a good and varied menu and all styles of food on it were delicious. The rooms are beautiful and the grounds and gardens are a paradise.
All the staff - reception (Edi who contacted us beforehand when we we're arranging transport to the hotel and met us on arrival), the restaurant staff and the dive team are wonderful and helpful. And all the other staff around the hotel are also very welcoming. It is a special place. We hope to return again but not leave it so long. Absolutely nothing!
- Judith (10/5): Beautiful traditional Balinese designed bungalows in gorgeous grounds - Pondok Sari was a tranquil haven - I spent a week here & loved everything . Just a totally beautiful setting for a break away & such good value . So nice to be amongst such authentic, old school Balinese accommodation - with fantastic service.
I will definitely return!
- Twever (9/5): A relaxing stay at a lovely beachside resort. - We had a relaxing 4 night stay at this picturesque beach resort. A truly relaxed setting on a calm sandy beach, with tasty local food and lovely staff-thanks Mike, Edhy and team!. We definitely took advantage of the terrific swimming and snorkelling right off the beach-seeing so many colorful fish and other ocean life brought much happiness. Also, try to get out for the sunrise dolphin tour arranged right next door on the beach - we saw saw so many spinner dolphins we lost track of the total! I hope to be back again soon!
- Judith (9/5): Superb - Beach front, lots of comfy cushioned relax places, staff, old Bali design. Beautiful garden. Restaurant is really good. Dive shop on site very good and friendly. Location was excellent to other restaurants and ATM. Acknowledging it was rainy season roof needed a repair and plumbing in bathroom needed attention .
- Vera (8/5): Nice place in a lovely tranquil area - Location, access to thr water, the territory
- Carlo (8/5): Very good - A very nice hotel with bungalow in a beautiful very large garden, Maybe the best fascinating Place in the area. There Is no frigo in the rooms. Millions of moswuitos: It could be useful a disenfestation
- Faith (9/5): Superb -
- Anna (10/5): Our diving experience. started here 🌟 - We loved it!
The resort is very beautiful, clean and calm.
The water is nice and we especially loved snorkeling with the wild turtles in the house reef and within the coral sculptures of the biorock conservation programm.
We also did our SSI OWD certification and it was awesome. Komang took such good care of us and made sure we performed well and exercised everything we need to know for starting our diving experience. We felt very comfortable with him as a teacher and the Karang Divers in the whole. We are more than happy that we made the first steps to become Divers with you guys!
The food was very good and we loved having breakfast while watching the ocean.
We also tried the full body massage and liked it. Nothing to complain!
- Una (10/5): A wonderful stay - This was a perfect oasis. A little piece of heaven. The staff were wonderful, every meal was a delight/ and the infinity pool and the view was just bliss. Almost don’t want to write this review and keep this little gem to ourselves Nothing- even the raimstorma were perfect
- Julie (8/5): Ideal peaceful location, if air con had been better it would have been perfection - For us the location was perfect, really peaceful beach with no hawkers etc
Whole resort very authentic, even the sunloungers were in the shade of a beautiful old tree Problems with our air con not powerrful enough, even after swopping rooms. Staff couldnt have been more helpful in trying to resolve this though.
- Angela (7/5): Good - AC never got below 25c
- Cole (9/5): Superb -
- James (8/5): Very good -
- Afra (7/5): Great location ok room - Great location, fantastic staff, okish accommodation, dissapointing food.
The property is rigth on a sandy beach. Perfect for swimming and reasonable snorkling. There are a few restaurants in a near side street away from the busy main road. Small supermarket close to entrance of resort.
Staff is friendly and Edhy, who arranged an excursion for me, delivered some of the best customer service i have experienced. Compliments! The room is a bit dark and the decor a bit tacky. My cabin felt very private until guests moved in next door and I could hear them talking all the time.
Really missed a fridge and water cooker.
I think is very sad the resort only supplies small waterbottles - they should really offer a refill station.
Grounds pretty and well maintained. The dining and beach area feel a bit cramped with tables and loungers.
Most dissapointing was the food. My lunch was worse meal in Bali and a tiny portion (i an not a big eater) A la cart breakfast was good. But on a busy day the buffet has very limited choice.
I liked the location in Permuteran but would see if better is available
One tip that has nothing to do with the resort. Do NOT go dolphin watching. It is a horrid experience. With dozens dozens of boats you chase any dolphin popping up. But again not the resorts fault! I requested they arrange it and they did a great job. Shame on me for choosing to do this
- Jose (6/5): Pleasant -
- Lyn (9/5): We loved our stay there and would definitely stay again. - Unfortunately we thought the breakfasts were disappointing. It appeared that most of the food was prepared quite early and left to sit before eating.
We loved the resort, gardens and position in relation to the beach and Main Street. Breakfast ☹️
- Nick (10/5): Perfect - Liked everything the garden setting the traditional build of hotel was exceptional. We loved everything about our stay from the friendly welcoming from staff ,,the quiet peaceful atmosphere the food was fantastic sitting under the fig tree eating dinner. Michael the guest relations manager was the stand out . Our rating is a 10 Nothing not to like
- Dušan (10/5): A rather nice mixture of old Bali with a new ways of Bali. - Something for nostalgic travelers. Pondok Sari Hotel I knew for decades. The atmosphere, old style, wooden bungalows amid lush tropical gardens, serene sandy beach in the shade of old trees, and attentive staff remain unsurpassed. Mr. Mekel pays attention to every detail, directs staff when necessary, and communicates excellently with guests.
In 2024 you still get some feeling of an old Bali. Just avoid European holiday seasons - July, August, and Christmas - and you will appreciate the old charm of Bali.
All the staff at Pondok Sari, from Mr. Mekel to reception people, staff at the restaurant, room cleaning, servicing, and gardeners - highest marks. Thank you all for your hospitality! Higher powers (owners, directors) of Pondok Sari (in Denpasar?) do not deserve the same marks.
Prices for services offered by the hotel (transport, massage ...) are over the top.
When traveling I got their email through the booking.com application demanding to send my credit card data for an already paid booking again. After my answer that I refused to resend any data, I got an email stating: "Sorry, the system is compromised."
The system belonging to Pondok Sari or belonging to booking.com remained a mystery.
It's a scam, but a certain percentage of guests could fall into the trap.
When you step out of the resort, you are in the center of Pemuteran village.
The village developed through the years, however, development is apparently in quantity not in quality. When you stroll in one or the other direction of the main road you will see dozens and dozens of ventures offering the essence of the village: Eat, Drink, Dive.
Wiener schnitzel, french fries, pizza, cocktails, cold beer, arak (local spirit: something like vodka mixed with high octane fuel), diving better than on Mars - all over the place.
Some of the businesses claim to be planet-saving, life-saving, green, eco, bio, (super)natural, and essentially mind-blowing game changers in tourism.
The package seems to become way more important than the content.
Eateries compete with each other by artfully designing the food on the plates, like some Goodyear or Michelin star-awarded restaurants, and letting the authenticity of the proper fantastic taste of local cuisine go down the drain.
Other services bravely compete with each other on all known (and also some not yet known) social self-promoting and bragging platforms.
But it's still a good place to visit. Just keep your expectations in check.
Be it a first-time visit to Pemuteran or as in my case because of so many friends, memories, and a great feeling I'm a tourist now ...
- Siobhan (8/5): Great service, clean and comfortable - The staff were fantastic and went above and beyond for us. The breakfast is nice, you can eat breakfast on the beach. There is a lovely vibe about the place. It is on the beach, with great snorkeling and is easy to walk to local warungs for meals and there is a supermarket/shop nearby. It was our honeymoon and the staff were absolutely lovely.
- Sandra (10/5): Exceptional -
- James (9/5): A charming ethnic property in a peaceful location on the much more unspoilt North Coast. - Fantastic property, with the most amazing Balinese architecture throughout. Such a delight to walk through the property grounds. Even the swimming pool is stunning, set in the garden amongst statues of Buddha and under the low canopy. The bungalow was cosy yet comfortable, and perfect for a family of 3, and the private 'outdoor' bathroom was delightful.
Only 30 minutes drive from the National Park, so convenient for anyone who wants to try snorkelling or birdwatching. Dining room staff could have been more enthusiastic, and although breakfast was good, the only other meal we had there was very average and rather overpriced (much better dining choices are just a few minutes walk from the property).
Also, it would have been nice if we had tea making facilities in the room.
Our biggest complaint is that the only drinking water provided in the room was in the form of very small plastic bottles - extremely environmentally unfriendly, and no option of regular filtered water, so if one wants more drinking water one has to go to the restaurant (only when it is open mind you!) to buy yet more plastic bottles. (advice: buy your own 2 litre bottles in the nearby grocery store!)
- Nikki (9/5): Beautiful lush garden setting, beach front location, and traditional decor - Beautiful lush garden setting, great beach front location, friendly, helpful staff, and traditional, ornate decor and furniture. No fridge nor kettle, but this is only a minor inconvenience
- Dianne (10/5): A lovely villa in a peaceful garden. Staff very friendly and helpful. Beautiful beach Very tranquil get away. - Beautiful gardens, quiet, peaceful friendly staff. Lovely restaurant and food delicious.
- Irena (6/5): The worst choice in the area - Unfortuntately I trusted the positive reviews and was deeply disappointed. The only positives about this hotel are the beautiful garden and old-time charm of the public areas, as well as the shade of some huge trees for the sunbed area. The food is OK (nothing to wrote home about) with quite competitive prices. The room was smallish and grotty, extremely dark - electric light was required at all times. An incredible number of mosquitos which were undeterred by any chemical means, the mosquito net saved the mights but the open bathroom was a hunting ground. Everything was old and not closing well, the toilet flush did not work. The biorock and the other snorkeling areas (even those reachable by boat) were underwhelming. The pool water was never clear.
All the other hotels on the beach seemed much nicer, newer and in better condition.
- Pamela (8/5): Very good -
- Christine (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful, well maintained grounds with lush plants and lots of water ponds. Restaurant and pool are conveniently located at the end of the park. Beach lounges in the shade under big fig tree. Diving and snorkelling at your doorstep, no need to leave. Staff were exeptional!
- Westlund (10/5): We also loved the fruit basket welcoming us as return guests, great personal touch! - The property is so lovely, with gardens, the pool, and the beach. Also the antique feel of the decor is really special.
- Mark (9/5): Lovely hotel as a base for Menjangan Is diving and snorkelling trips. - The location allows for snorkelling and diving boat trips to Menjangan Is, which is the main reason to visit. The hotel has lovely old Javanese panels and jogelos and beautiful gardens. Staff are great, very friendly and helpful. Meals were good too. Mosquito's were a bit annoying, the hotel could do with fogging.
- Chris (10/5): Our stay here (2nd time) a highlight of our trip to Bali. - Superb location You can swim from your breakfast table! The dive company boat can pick you up right in front of the hotel breakfast area!
Beautiful garden and pool area.If you can afford one of the Javanese antique villas do it !
My wife loved the in house spa treatment.
- Kent (10/5): Exceptional - Great location right by the beach, very safe leaving things on the beach chairs while going in the water, which made things extremely convenient. Beautiful grounds and pool. Much quieter than south Bali, so nice for relaxing. Spent 3 days but could have spent a week! Could have had a fridge and coffee maker/tea kettle in the room
- Virginia (10/5): Unique with a feel of restful old-school Bali. - The amazing detail of the surrounds. Every day I’d see something new. The staff were excellent in every way
- Tiffany (7/5): Good - The restaurant food is really good, highly recommend. It is close to the beach, staff is very friendly Kinda old
- Tim (9/5): Such ornate detail. - Absolutely beautiful, traditionally styled hotel. Straight onto the beach. Loads of lovely staff. A little more choice for breakfast would be good. That said, we didn't go hungry.
- Christopher (9/5): Superb - Super friendly staff were really helpful and made my stay a wonderful time. I really liked the rustic rooms and the food was very good. Facilities were all that I needed, a lovely place! Was all ok for me
- Mie (8/5): Very good - The hotel area is so beatifull
- Michael (9/5): It was so good we extended our stay - The rooms and its furnishings. The charming little swimming pool. And the beach. You can swim at high or low tides and there arent any crocodiles or deadly sea wasps to contend with. Nothing.
- Lauren (9/5): We look forward to returning - The restaurant menu doesn’t cater to vegans but they were accommodating . The location is magnificent I think Pondok Sari would benefit by adopting a more ecological ethos. Instead of providing little plastic water bottles everyday they should place a large water dispenser in every room for guests to refill their own bottles.
- Mirko (8/5): Typical tourist resort with very helpful staff - Very nice hotel but a bit outdated. The staff was very friendly and experienced. Hotel right on the beach. Snorkelling was possible directly from the hotel. The food was good and standard. The complex was very nice, but a bit outdated.
- Brightwell (10/5): Exceptional - If we could rate higher then 10/10 we would! The gardens and grounds were idyllic. Our bungalow very clean and comfortable. The service and staff were exceptional and very friendly and helpful. The location was perfect and within 50m we could be dining beach side or head the opposite direction to eat at nearby Warung. We felt like we had been transported to our own piece of paradise. Thanks Pondok Sari..we certainly hope to come back. Absolutely nothing
- Dagmar (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing villa decorated with beautiful wood carving. Small but so nice swimming pool with area to lay down, amazing place in very nice garden, also a fish pool. So happy to stay here! The garden of the resort is decorated with Buddha statues,we loved it so much. The staff so friendly, great hospitality. We recommend to everybody!
- Bernd (9/5): Superb -
- Jason (9/5): Superb - Everything was fantastic. the only down side was if there were more sun lounges on the beach,
- Paul (10/5): Exceptional -
- Rudolf (10/5): Excellent food and extremely friendly personal. Lovely beach area - Excellent food and extremely friendly personal. Lovely beach area.
- Christoph (10/5): The place to be in Permuteran! - A very well tended resort with bungalows in a tropical garden. The restaurant area with view to the beach and the sea is especially nice cos of a big old tree, which spends shadow all day. There are also restaurant seats on the beach under the tree where you can have your meals, if you like.
The staff is friendly, professional, and they speak at least english and german. The way from our bungalow to the beach was long. (This is a joke, we have no complaints)
- Janine (10/5): Peaceful, tropical, beach resort with everything you need onsite, for a perfect holiday. - This resort is a tropical paradise. Lush, well established, beautiful gardens, kind staff, very clean, peaceful. Great pool and beach right beside restaurant. Many spaces and Day beds to relax or dine and drink. Superb massage treatments onsite. Short walk to roadside warungs and beach bars. Virtually no mosquitoes!
- Philip (8/5): Very good -
- Naima (8/5): Very authentic hotel where you’ll feel very welcome by all the staff. It’s a super relaxing place, by the beach, in the - The hotel and the rooms are very authentic. It’s absolutely peaceful and the gardens are luxuriants.
The hotel team, and especially the restaurant team is fabulous. Always smiling, very kind, and the manager took the time to come and speak with our group everyday.
The hotel has a dive center and they are great ! We did 2 days of diving with them and their team is awesome, from the reception, the manager, to the diving guides and boat guys.
- John (7/5): Good - The staff were very friendly and helpful. Customer relations officer (Michael) was very informative.
- Deborah (10/5): Beautiful hotel with outstanding staff and delicious food - Beautiful hotel with outstanding staff and delicious food
- Luke (6/5): a peaceful, old Bali style retreat in quaint Pemuteran. - gardens are beautiful, beach location very good, love the old Bali feeling of it. lots of character. attached bungalows have very thin walls and you can hear everything going on in your neighbor’s room.
they need to offer better coffee besides Bali kopi.
- Daniel (8/5): A lovely quirky resort on the beach surrounded by nature. - The pool was awesome. It was surrounded by nature and ponds. The rooms were spacious and clean. Breakfast was decent and varied. The whole resort was really quirky and you felt like you were in the rainforest. Spa was so relaxing and reasonably priced. The resort was a little worn, but not enough to be an issue at all. Our room shared a wall with another bungalow, but the top half of the wall was wicker, so you could hear your neighbours easily.
- Kenneth (8/5): enjoyable relaxation in paradise - fantastic staff and tranquil setting needs deep cleaning (high pressure water jets to remove mould in bathrooms and pathways) and general maintenance post Covid
- Olivia (10/5): nice garden, super snorkeling, best staff, friendly, peaceful - the hotel is located in the middle of a dreamlike garden. everything is beautiful - down to the last detail. what impressed us most was the friendly and attentive staff, they read all wishes and fulfil them immediately.
the hotel is good for resting or for diving and snorkelling. it is not very busy and very quiet, many guests are retired... i (42) would get a bit bored after a week. but i would like to chill there again for a few days. recommendable! -
- Peter (8/5): Very good - The grounds and the room were so nice.
- Nadine (7/5): Good - nice vibe & beautiful garden. directly at the beach and the staff is extremely friendly there was a bad smell in the room and in the outside bathroom. power plugs are very old / many of them don‘t work
- Wendy (10/5): Exceptional - Staff very friendly and helpful
Spa was fantastic Nothing
- Bharatha (10/5): The staff as well the facilities in this hotel is excellent. - The staff especially at the restaurant and the facilities management were polite and friendly. They paid attention and addressed to the basic needs of a family with kid such as providing boiled milk for our kid on timely basis and also fixing a toddler swing. Additionally, the gardens and the overall ambience is exceptional with beach and diving/snorkeling facilities. Wifi connectivity is weak and is only available at the reception and the restaurant.
- Joanna (10/5): Exceptional -
- Philip (8/5): Very good -
- Stephanie (9/5): Enjoyed my stay - The room was comfortable and cleaned daily. The shower had just enough warm water for a shower after going to the beach. Beach towels provided and there are sun beds.
There are lots of places to hang out around the restaurant and beach and the garden is lovely. The pool setting is so pretty. Big restaurant area which was almost empty during my stay so the staff got to know me well.
Free breakfast had a few choices and was enough to keep me going.
Snorkelling out the front and along to the right was great. No kettle, fridge or WiFi in the room. Pretty obvious that the intention is that you go to the restaurant for WiFi and spend money while you are there.
I did think that the meals were overpriced.
- Stefan (10/5): Ein wahrhaft schöner Ort! - It is a wonderful garden right by the sea, where we felt more at home than anywhere else in Bali! A good place, shaped by people who enjoy working there. This is how we imagined Bali to be, and at Pondok Sari we found it! The sea and the beach are very beautiful here. The huts are wonderful and especially the bathroom is unique. The breakfast is rich and offers a lot of variety. It was very hard for us to leave, because Pemuteran also has so much to offer with its friendly residents, its many small shops and the great restaurants. Nothing.
- Aurelia (8/5): Very good -
- Mark (9/5): Superb -
- Richard (7/5): Good -
- Arndt (9/5): Superb -
- Juan (9/5): great resort in Permuteran beach - nice rooms and great location. was nice to be in 50 m in the restaurant, which was directly in the beach. one of the few places we saw in Permuteran to have a beer or some food directly in the beach.
good place for snorkeling directly infront of the hotel. The price for food and other services was a bit overpriced, but it goes with the location...
I missed the water refil options we found in other accomodations across our trip. not only for the money but for the plastic reduction...
- Anna (8/5): Very good - great location - the snorkling here is amazing!
