Guest Reviews
- Ana Christina (10/5): -
- Monica (10/5): Highly recommend for an authentic onsen stay - Serene location nestled in the mountains. Very relaxing and perfect place to be for rejuvenation The two large onsens were incredible but the small one (chojukan) was full of mold
- Livia (10/5): We had a magical stay at Houshi Onsen Chojukan. Thank you. - Everything. Nothing.
- monika (10/5): - Unglaublich gelegen, inmitten von wunderbarer grüner Natur - historisch japanisch
- John (10/5): The perfect onsen ryokan. - In many ways the perfect Japanese onsen: idyllic location, historic wooden bath-houses, tatami rooms, traditional meals etc etc.
Two buses from the shinkansen station adds to the feeling of remoteness and specialness. I get the feeling we were given the "foreigners' package" even though one of out group spoke Japanese.
- Karin (6/5): Speciellt, traditionellt - Underbart onsen Traditionellt boende, sov på futonmadrass- inga sängar.
- zhisen (10/5): -
- Daria (9/5): Cozy, beautiful, relaxing - Very beautiful, relaxing, surrounded by nature. Baths are glorious.
- Dara (9/5): -
- simon (10/5): - Amazing…incredibly onsen. Felt like travelling back in time. Perfect
- Andre (10/5): - One of nicest onsen in Japan Nothing
- Shao yu (10/5): -
- Jones (8/5): Excellent opportunity to experience a beautiful onsen - This place offers a look into the past with its beautiful architecture and onsens including the mixed one shown in all the advertising. We’ve been to a lot of different places and this one rates very close to the top. The rooms are cold, but hey we went in winter so it’s expected
- Nela (10/5): -
- Silke (7/5): Worth the drive but no need to stay the night. - The location of the ryokan and its history are truly exceptional. We love onsen, and the atmosphere of the different onsen alone was worth the visit. We had a lovely room overlooking the river. We were not impressed with the food served. It was okay, but considering ryokan cuisine, there is definitely room for improvement. The place has certainly seen better days, and the service appears tired.
- nelson (3/5): Good onsens bad rooms and not hygienic - Beautiful onsens in the secluded woodlands 3 cockroaches in several locations in the bedroom and aunts room and onsens, the pillow feels like a rock in the old rooms so please book the new which use proper pillows and when requested to change they are kind of run out of western pillows, that shows the place is kind of under budget on pillows in an age when most high end hotel offers pillows options or at least can’t all the rooms have the option to do western pillows, and for service the vending machine is not working l, the water machine is broken, compare with other onsens the staff aeems like they are under staffed and not so willing assist guests, seriously asking guests to bring the luggage themselves to the lobby after a long drive and only willing to do it after request is a Nono for Japanese Ryokan, there are many ryokans in the area which does better. The rooms are old and insects in not just one room but few of the rooms is disappearing .
- LEONG (1/5): - Staff's attitude is bad
- Stacey (9/5): -
- Je-Wei (10/5): -
- Guy (10/5): Great choice for skiers and solo travelers - Cool atmosphere, great location. Felt like private retreat Western breakfast was a bit weird

- kenneth (10/5): - Visiting Hoshi Onsen Chojukan as an American was quite different from other experiences I had in Japan. Soaking in the baths twice a day was peaceful and beneficial. The meals served in the dining room were outstanding as well. Tattoos did not seem to be a problem in the baths. I eat a lot but it became difficult to finish the meals with so many different foods available on offer. The service was friendly and responsive, the hotel is well staffed in regards to how many guests it receives. The surrounding area is incredibly beautiful in summertime, and there are many fun areas and activities for tourists. The wifi and the phone signal are poor, which helps with disconnection and relaxation. My mind felt very quiet after staying here for three days. The onsen access schedule prevents men from taking a regular shower-- anywhere in the hotel-- between 7am and 3pm.

- Henrique (10/5): -
- Nicolas (10/5): Exceptional - Exceptional stay with a magical onsen experience. -
- Micaela (10/5): Exceptional - The onsen areas with warm water are wonderfull, so relaxing and the atmosfere is beautiful. Enjoy the warm water while looking at the sorrounding nature and mountain is a unforgetable experience.
the dinner was very well organised and with lots of japanese deliciuos food. The breakfast could be a little too rich for a European citisens but also good. The employees are welcoming and they are really caring about the guests.
It is worth the 2 buses rides to get here :)
- Jones (9/5): Amazing tradition onsen experience - Absolutely beautiful property and wonderful staff, the three Onsen’s are all very different, personally the outdoor one was our favourite with the mixed one a close second. Very very traditional stay including the bedding and food, loved it, it’s expensive and way out the way. I’m being picky but the third Onsen was tiny, two shower heads and small space, be ready for very firm and thin mattresses but that’s what the place offers so suck it up and enjoy.
- Lilan (10/5): Amazing highly recommend - Such a beautiful place and authentic experience it was the highlight of our trip It was very hard to get to so we had to hire a car but it’s also very beautifully located
- Michael (10/5): Exceptional - Probably the best Onsen in Japan
- Tan (3/5): Do not feel comfortable and will not come back to this place. - Onsen water is hot enough. Location is far deep inside, the road is extremely narrow.
One of the onsen is too small , limited time to use the onsen. There is no elevator to the room, the stairs also very steep. The room’s heater not working, almost no amenities.
- Prasert (8/5): Good rest and relaxing ryokan - A very nice and long historical ryokan. Good rest and Onsen here. Staff are nice and friendly. The switching of onsen time and usage of mixed sex in a certain area in a certain time.
- Matthieu (9/5): Superb - Incredibly beautiful location and facilities.
- Terry (7/5): Fantastic slice of history - Onsen were amazing Hard futons, corridors were cold
- Charlotte (9/5): Amazing experience - Unique and traditional vibe A lot of insects in the room
- Viktor (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sean (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tyler (8/5): Very good -
- Ryan (9/5): Superb -
- Christian (8/5): Beautiful Onsen in the mountains - Beautiful property, Onsen, and room. Friendly staff. Meals were repetitive, and some dishes may not appeal to a Western palate. The last dinner made me sick to my stomach.
- Elena (10/5): Magnificent. - This place was magical! It was everything we expected and much more! The rooms were impeccable, the pool beautiful and historic, the meals were truly exceptional, the staff incredibly friendly and helpful, the site is historical and it was covered in snow when we arrive. We will definitely recommend it! Nothing. It was perfect.
- Thi (10/5): Exceptional -
- Barnaby (9/5): Superb -
- Haley (8/5): Absolutely magical - I found this ryokan on a list of tattoo friendly onsens. There is some competing information out there, but I emailed the property directly and they said I could just cover my tattoos with a towel. Once there, I had no issues with my tattoos while using the public baths, despite being a young foreigner amongst elderly Japanese, everyone was nice about it. The baths were absolutely stunning, looked just like the pictures. It snowed one night and to sit in the open-air bath in the snow under a red maple tree was pretty magical. There were also some hiking trails out behind the property that were lovely to walk around in. The local sake was pretty tasty too. The food was fine but nothing to write home about. The beds were of course futons on the floor, which is normal. I was not used to the beanbag pillow though and that was not the most comfortable. But, hard to complain about an authentic experience at a Meiji-era onsen ryokan. Oddly, the first day the staff never came to put away our futons, so we just had beds out all day. But look, you come here for the natural hot spring baths, and it's worth it.
Incidentally, if you are using TA-Q-BIN, don't make the same mistake as me - it only took one day for our bags to get there from Tokyo, but to send them from the onsen straight to Haneda would have taken two days, so we had to schlep our heavy bags into an expensive taxi since the local buses are quite small. If you can plan ahead and stash any large luggage in a locker or something you'll be glad for it.
- Xanthi (10/5): Exceptional -
- Timothy (10/5): Truly magical and restful stay - The Houshi Onsen Chojukan is a magical place that offers scenic views and beautiful walking trails in the surrounding area. The staff members are incredibly lovely and truly elevated our stay there. The food was amazing, and we couldn't get enough of the onsens. The times for the onsens M/F/Mixed were a bit odd at times other than that it was a great stay
- Daniel (10/5): One in a lifetime stay - The place is exquisite. The beauty of the onsen baths and preservation of the building is outstanding. Came for our honeymoon and the staff treated us incredibly well. Everything was beyond our expectations.
- Magdalena (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lisa-jane (10/5): Sublime - It's authentic old style Japanese. The actual onsens (3 of them) were stunning, original 1800s buildings.
The food was fantastic. The attention to detail in every aspect was outstanding. The onsen schedule was a bit confusing at first, but no major hassle.
- Armin (10/5): Its a magic place. I was 30 years ago and it keeps its spirit - Its a magic place. I was 30 years ago and it keeps its spirit Its a magic place. I was 30 years ago and it keeps its spirit
- Shikiko (8/5): Very good - The baths are absolutely beautiful and the ryokan is located in a nicely tucked away in the mountains.
- Veronica (10/5): One of the best place on earth - The place is amazing. Everything is dreamy
- Rotem (10/5): A beautiful, relaxing and interesting experience. - The location is beautiful, the room was extremely relaxing, the baths and food were amazing. A person speaking English well seemed to have been responsible for me, and I felt comfortable asking him all of my questions, as this was my first experience of anything similar. I could use the baths although I have large tattoos. Could get there completely by public transport - although note that one of the buses runs on a different schedule than what google maps believes. The baths are not very large, so perhaps one should read beforehand on the expected behavior. As the place is old, a large spider appeared at some point in the room, but that seems inevitable.
- Kevin (10/5): Classic, cozy inn with the best bathing hall in Japan - Our fourth stay here and we are still absolutely smitten with this place. Comfortable rooms, wonderful staff, delicious food, and the best baths in the prefecture, all wrapped up in a cozy, creaky, glowing inn nestled deep in the woods.
- Martyna (10/5): Exceptional -
- Walter (7/5): Good -
- Giacomo (10/5): Exceptional - The onsen is amazing. Seems like leaving in a dream
- Marcela (10/5): Exceptional -
- Marina (10/5): At least once in your life - This place is just on the top of my ranking. A real Japanese experience with all the necessary detail to make the stay unforgettable. The different baths super clean and with history. The meals offered were delightful. And the environment just as needed, calm, serene and peaceful.
