Guest Reviews

- Amanda (9/5): Charming traditional - Beautiful and very traditional and charming
Meals were great, seven + courses including lobster, snow crab and wagyu.
Nada
- Eliott (10/5): incredible full experience -

- Amanda (10/5): Beautiful relaxing stay! - Beautiful, serene location. Wonderful staff. My 8 year old son loved our host- he said she felt like his Japanese grandma because she took wonderful care of us and had a soft soothing voice. Japanese meals were delicious if you are open-minded to seafood.
The onsen was so relaxing. It was a great way to recover part way through our trip. Meals are hard for kids if they are not open minded/adventurous eaters.

- Isabelle (8/5): Amazing staff, service and warm hospitality. Food was amazing. Hot spring baths well supplied with many products - Gardens, staff, service, food, hospitality, hot spring baths. Service was 10/10. Unique experience at a very traditional ryokan. We loved it! Facilities are little dated but part of the charm

- Georgia (10/5): Fantastic property for a traditional stay in a ryokan - Incredible staff and beautiful property! Authentic and welcoming experience Older rooms
- Esteban (10/5): Espectacular - Experiencia maravillosa.
- Herşeyiyle harika bir yer. negatif bir yorumum yok.
- Vincenzo Samuele (10/5): One of a kind experience - - once you arrive at the place, it feels like stepping into another world. Everything is curated to the smallest details and the staff constantly goes the extra mile to ensure you have a smooth stay.
- The rooms are beautifully decorated and have lots of amenities.
- the food is incredible, both dinner and breakfast are 10/10
- the overall experience was one of a kind. If you get the chance, it’s absolutely worth it to step into the traditional Japanese hospitality. - it’s really a minor thing, but if you are taller that 1.85mt, you have to constantly pay attention not to bump your head when passing through the doors.
- EricStone (10/5): Unforgettable - This is my first time experience in a Ryokan. The food and service are exceptional. The hotel is beautifully set in a Japanese garden providing natural hot springs in the public Gold Palace and Silver Palace. There is also a private tub in my room. If you want to have a experience like enjoying a time capsule and try how traditional Ryokan works this is a must try. But if you are a modern style lover then this is not your best choice

- Sara (9/5): Magical stay in a beautiful garden - Hotel Gyokutei is a beautiful, peaceful property. The hotel staff were very attentive to us and made us feel very welcome. The evening meal was outstanding, as was the breakfast. It was an easy walk into town for shopping or catching the bus. The private onsen in our room was delightful. The public baths were well maintained, clean, and so soothing. Our multi-room accommodation was lovely, but it was quite cold in many spaces that were not heated by mini splits.
- Yan Ching Hermione (10/5): The onsen is very good. - This is my second time visiting here. Very good for me to stay here for exploring Hakone Nothing. Everything is on point.
- Henry (9/5): Beautiful ryokan for those wanting a traditional experience with modern amenities - Very friendly staff. Spacious room and wonderful facilities. Both private and public baths use hot spring water. I would recommend requesting the hinoki/cypress wood bathtub. The public baths will alternate between men and women depending on time of day. Excellent dinner and breakfast, though there is a strong (traditional) seafood influence, so this might be a deal-breaker for people. Examples: fish liver, oyster meatball, uni (sea urchin), fried whole fish (horse mackerel). Really, the ONLY way this stay could've been better would be laundry equipment/facilities, or at least laundry service if the space can't accommodate.
Slightly tough to get to, Google Maps doesn't have the right 'spot'. If you see a stone wall, keep walking to the left (uphill) until you see an entrance area with a huge 'parking lot'. I think a photo somneone posted on Google Maps will provide more details.
- CAMILLA (9/5): -
- Jani Kozlowski (10/5): One of a kind experience - Amazing staff, Amazing food, beautiful facility All fabulous!
- Joanna (10/5): Best experience - Amazing experience. I would recommend to anyone visiting Japan. Google Maps navigation only said to go straight up a retaining wall and we spent a long time circling trying to work out how to get there. Go left at the retaining wall and the gate is on your right up the hill a bit, opposite Casablanca.

- Rico (10/5): Prachtig traditionele ryokan! - Hoe we werden ontvangen en geholpen! Hoe de locatie eruit zag. Prachtig!!
- Lysa (10/5): -
- Marina (10/5): It was our first night in Japan, for sure we will cherish this moment - The place is amazing, the staff is so attentive and welcoming, it is just outstanding. Everything is made with great attention to details. Everything was perfect
- Rony (9/5): -
Vi as - Tutto. Praticamente nulla. Attenzione solamente alla posizione indicata su google maps. Risulta difficile arrivare e trovarlo.
- Jing (9/5): - Dinner, spa, view are excellent Breakfast is too salty for us, personally like light food in the morning
- Vicky (9/5): A lovely relaxing stay - highly recommend - Lovely and peaceful stay. Really enjoyed the onsen experience. We had breakfast and dinner served in our room by Yukie, who was wonderful. The food was great and gave us the opportunity to try an authentic dining experience. Room was big and spacious. Had to walk up a steep hill to access property.
- Claire (8/5): - Traditional Inn. Lovely staff. Great traditional dinner and breakfast experience.
Fantastic Onsen
- Syin dee (9/5): Great traditional ryokan experience with amazing Kaiseki cuisine - Great service Nothing
- Mark (1/5): Beware of this hotel. Beautiful food but deeply disappointing service — we left feeling misled, ignored and overcharged - Beautiful food but deeply disappointing service — we left feeling misled and ignored.
We enjoyed the dinner being served in our room — the food was beautifully presented and of high quality Unfortunately, we were significantly overcharged.
The hotel acknowledged that they had misinformed us about the pricing, which resulted in an unfair higher charge.
We proposed a fair middle ground to resolve the matter, but that was ignored. Overall this really soured what should have been a memorable stay.
- Prateek (10/5): To sum it up, an exceptional and wonderful experience. Would definitely recommend! - My wife and I were on our honeymoon. It was a wonderful experience. The room was clean, spacious and even better than the pictures from the website! The staff was amazing. Although we had a pamphlet with clear instructions, it was still very helpful having someone tell us what the dos and donts were around the room especially since we had a private onsen. The food was exceptional. We were served two courses and both were well cooked and seasoned. Nothing.
- Maria (10/5): Unforgettable Stay with Exceptional Hospitality - Gyokutei is a beautiful traditional ryokan with outstanding hospitality. The rooms are spacious and elegant, the private onsen was wonderful, and the kaiseki meals were both delicious and beautifully presented. A special thanks to the attendant who guided us and served our meals with such warmth and care—she truly made our stay unforgettable. A bit difficult to find and has many steps to get there but the peaceful setting and exceptional service made it completely worth it.
- jochen (9/5): Extraordinary. Definitely recommended. - Very friendly and absolutely a great and special Japanese culinary experience! The ryokan has a relaxing atmosphere and the staff are exceptionally helpful. The entrance was not easy to find and it was difficult to carry our heavy luggage up the hillside. Because the driveway was full of pebbles, it wasn't possible to roll the suitcase uphill. Could a narrow strip of asphalt maybe solve this?
- Ana (10/5): Great !! - Beautiful , easy to get to . Amazing experience
- Jingwen (10/5): -
- Eleonora (10/5): -
- Isabel (9/5): -
- Chiu (9/5): Superb -
- Makiko (10/5): Exceptional - There is a steep climb to the ryokan. If you have a lot of luggage or if walking is difficult, you may want to take a taxi. The recommendation from one of the reviewers was really helpful: when you get to the retaining wall, walk towards the left up the hill.
The staff were welcoming from beginning to end. They stored our luggage for us, and the suitcases were delivered to our rooms by the time we returned. The view from our sitting room was the koi pond, just as it is shown in the photos. My family enjoyed the private onsen in our room. The women’s onsen was spacious and relaxing.
Dinner was served in our room and took about two hours. We thought the food was beautifully prepared and delicious. Those who do not like seafood or plant-based dishes might think otherwise. It was a lovely traditional ryokan experience. We would have loved to stay longer if we could. NA
- Youngmi (10/5): Exceptional -
- Megan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Yilan (10/5): Exceptional - A short walk from the train station. Very attentive and nice staff. Delicious dinner and breakfast. Exquisite gardens. Cozy onsen in our own bathroom, plus two larger, semi-outdoor onsen pools that connect to the woods in the mountain. There are only 6 rooms so it is almost never available.
- Robert (10/5): Exceptional - It was a perfect traditional Ryokan. Please understand what that is before you go and you will enjoy your stay more.
- Timothy (9/5): Superb -
- Laurie (10/5): Traditional experience with a large room and it felt like we had the entire property to ourselves. Incredible service, d - Traditional experience with a large room and it felt like we had the entire property to ourselves.
- Orlin (10/5): Fantastic- relaxing - Everything All was good
- Rebecca (10/5): Traditional experience with attentive staff and delicious meals. - The staff are incredible, patient even with clueless foreigners mucking up tradition unintentionally. The grounds are beautiful. The food is amazing but perhaps not suitable for all palates. The only complaint was the bed was a little bit too hard for my partner. It’s a traditional style home, so those seeking sleek or modern may want to look elsewhere.
- Adriana (10/5): Amazing Stay - They ground are beautiful. The staff very friendly and helpful.
I wish we had stayed one more night. To much to pack in one day . Did not get a chance to enjoy the Onsen as much as I wanted.
The serving of the meals odd a ritual. Never have I experienced sunshine like this. Wonderful meal for dinner and breakfast.
Wonderful to get a taste of the Japanese ale life. Everything was wonderful.
- Elizabeth (10/5): We loved our stay here! - The inn very quiet and peaceful. The grounds are very pretty and the layout is comfortable and gives you privacy. Our room attendant Yukie is a lovely and helpful person and made us feel very welcome!
- Stathis (8/5): Very good -
- Caspar (10/5): Exceptional -
- Yasemin (10/5): Exceptional - True Japanese Ryokan experience! The staff were spectacular, the food was out of this world!! The room, atmosphere everything was perfect. We loved the public onsen and my husband was still allowed to enter with his tattoos since the hotel was not busy. Our little onsen in our room was amazing too! Overall this was an amazing experience and we definitely recommend it! The staff were so so so friendly and welcoming!!
- Adrianne (10/5): Exceptional - This was hands-down the highlight of our trip to Japan. The service was amazing and the facilities are beautiful. Our room was super spacious for two adults and two children, and felt so traditional while at the same time being extremely comfortable. The in-room meals were excellent and just added to the immersive experience of staying in a ryokan.
- Maximilian (10/5): Exceptional -
- Adi (10/5): Exceptional -
- Nicolai (10/5): Exceptional - Everything was pure perfection! My wife and I loved staying here! Sublime service by all staff, chef’s food was a gastronomic adventure in the best way possible, grounds were stunning, onsen was clean and relaxing, our house was perfect and our favourite part was our house server “Kyoko” we have never experienced such gentle, homely and professional care as with her!
Thank you! And see you again! Cannot think of anything
- Mads (9/5): Full Roykan experience. - Excellent traditional Japanese experience with super friendly service. The food is as expected but very traditional Japanese.
- Karima (10/5): Exceptional -
- Fatih (10/5): It was amazing. I am sad i have only stayed one night but if you come to japan and experience what a ryokan with onsen u - Everthing. Hospitality, onsen, true ryokan experience, meals Nothing

- Kerry (10/5): Exceptional -
- I (10/5): Our family had an amazing experience, and we would definitely return. - Our family had an incredible stay at this ryokan, and we can’t recommend it enough! From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with warm hospitality that made us feel at home. The atmosphere is deeply authentic, with beautiful traditional architecture, tatami rooms, and a serene ambiance that transports you to the heart of Japanese culture.
The service was impeccable—every staff member was attentive, kind, and went above and beyond to ensure our comfort. The highlight of our stay was the phenomenal kaiseki meals, which showcased the finest seasonal ingredients and the true artistry of Japanese cuisine. Every dish was thoughtfully prepared, beautifully presented, and absolutely delicious.
