- Pat (5/5): Lovely garden, good location, expensive breakfast. - Beautiful garden, great location. Room was very small, booked a double but hardly big enough for one person. The breakfast was very expensive, big choice of a Japanese breakfast but only bread and scrambled eggs if you don't like Japanese food or don't know what things are. Nowhere to open suitcase other than the bed.

- PLAHP (10/5): Last Shogun - Hotel is located at a old villa of the last 15th shogun Yoshinobu Tokunaga. The garden is well preserved and the restaurant, Ukidono, serves high-quality traditional Japanese tea-ceremony dinner, Kaiseki. Shizuoka is only one hour from Tokyo by HIkari super express train, and this place is well worth visiting. You can drop at by Odawara castle on the way from Tokyo if you have enough time.

- ChrigiZH (8/5): Nice Hotel - This hotel had the probably biggest room we had in Japan (still small though)
You get good value for the price. But the room is a bit dusty (not too bad though)
As we were there during Typhoon Hagibis we had to stay a bit longer which was very comfortable. The staff was very helpful eventhough communication was a bit tricky because of the language barrier.
Breakfast is nice as well and has a good selection of international and Japanese dishes.
The hotel is very central and has Shops, Restaurants and Craft Beer bars nearby. You can reach Shizuoka Station within 5 Minutes by foot (most of it underground which comes in handy when it's raining).
There's also a laundry which we were happy to use.
Overall I can recommend this hotel and would stay again!
- Stephenbkk20156 (10/5): Great place, don't miss the garden - I didn't chose the hotel but I loved it. Location was great, very convenient for the station, room was fine, front desk staff were kind and thoughtful. Enjoyed a better than average breakfast, included in the room rate. The whole experience was much more "boutique" than "chain" hotel.
But the real glory of the place is the privileged access to the former daimyo's garden next door. Each morning at breakfast, the waitstaff encouraged me to step outside into the garden. On the third morning, I finally did it. What a lovely place! Japanese aesthetics at their best. And I had it all to myself. Would have been worth staying here just for the garden, but like I said, the hotel was good, too.
- olafoomes (6/5): Excellent location downtown - Pleasant hotel close to the JR station and all the activities in the downtown area.
For such a big hotel the main entrance was rather small, I overshot it the first time around. Also the lobby was rather small. Nevertheless all in all the hotel was fine.
My room gave a great look on the garden. The neighbourhood was loaded with restaurants, bars and shops like for instance Don Quijote just around the corner.
- annajF8723GF (10/5): Excellent Service! - Their rooms were very comfy and clean. They clean the rooms everyday. Breakfast was delicious. The hotel staff spoke English so the transaction was easy. It is within the city so everything is accessible.
- riskaelfiarini (10/5): Very Great Hotel in Shizuoka - The hotel located in strategic location and the room was very well furnished. This hotel has one of the most elaborate and beautiful garden I have ever seen in a hotel, it's worth a stroll around this historical garden. Breakfast was delicious with many variant of meals. Staff were very helpfull. Definitely will stay here again when we're back to Shizuoka!
- MG1821 (6/5): Very close to everything BUT... - It is clean and very close to the train station and establishments.I just hate the breakfast, because they accommodate the Japanese speaking guests first. It should be 1st come 1st serve basis. And the non smoking rooms smells like it has been a smoking room long for long time.My husband is asthmatic.
- Clover5000 (10/5): AMAZING!!! - Wow, this hotel has it all. A stunning garden, huge rooms, large breakfast buffet, welcome drink (alcoholic) and warm service. Excellent location, as well. Very very good value - would definitely recommend!
- UncleCat (8/5): Good hotel plus Pleasant Shizuoka Surprise! - We stayed two nights on our way home. Our hotel room was very well furnished and included a personal air cleaner and what looks like a humidifier (though we didn't try it out). The LED lights were rather high tech!
The breakfast was very good value (Yen 750 each, pre-paid night before). The buffet spread has western and Japanese options (including a local speciality, a sort of taro paste). This hotel has one of the most elaborate and beautiful garden I have ever seen in a hotel. It is worth a stroll around this historical garden.
You can go up (free) to the 21st floor of the Prefectural Office and have good 360 degree views of Shizuoka. Like other reviewers, we don't find Sumpu Park all that great. However, the Momijiyama Garden inside the park is beautifully kept and what you would expect of a traditional Japanese garden.(bear in mind the park dates back to 1585, to Ieyasu, the first Tokugawa Shogun). This garden is well worth the entrance fee (Yen 150/adult) and should be a "must-visit".
Shizuoka City Tourist Info Centre (North exit of the train station) sprung a most pleasant suprise. Amazingly, they offer FREE Rental of a pocket Ninja WiFi for 15 days. There is no data limit and the internet connection is very fast (we streamed Korean drama to watch on the Shinkansen!) And we simply dropped if off at the Ninja WiFi shop at Haneda on our way out.Good one, Shizuoka!!!
- Jun2222 (10/5): Lovely hotel, excellent value for money - We stayed here en route to Hakone and Mt Fuji. The hotel is right in the centre with restaurants and shops.
Really nice front desk staff dressed in suite and smiling each time we walked by..
Room is clean and new, amenities free by the lift, the front desk staff even offer me extra facial mask and body lotion!
Breakfast was buffet, really good quality food and plentiful , we sat by the windows watching the street, which was surprising clean considering the previous night was Friday and rather busy when we got back around 11pm.
Great value for money considering the room, breakfast, plus onsite secure parking for just over JPY10K . Highly recommended.
- 405pauld (10/5): My first choice in Shizuoka - My wife and I live in Shizuoka city and have quite a lot of experience with the hotels in the city. You are not going to get a better place to stay than this hotel. The price is reasonable, the location is great and the rooms are big enough for people who expect western sized space.
The view is not exactly spectacular but if you can choose I recommend the garden side. Perhaps a tourist might prefer to see Mount Fuji so make sure to ask if that is possible. Try to stay above the 4th or 5th floor if you can.
- Imaleecious (8/5): More roomier than expected - We booked a deluxe room and thought it would be pretty crammed since we also requested for a baby cot to be in the room but we were pleasantly surprised to find the room quite spacious.
The bathroom was nice and clean with the infamous TOTO washlet :)
Its worth getting the breakfast at the hotel as they have a good selection of various Japanese food and some western food items too although our was a purely Japanese cuisine all the way.
The staff are very accommodating and even provided a bib for baby during breakfast.
The location is the best part about this hotel as its just a stones throw away from the city shopping and eateries. Would definitely stay here again.
- imaginarts (10/5): Love it - Coming back to this nice hotel in the center of the city. Really splendid traditional garden :-) Nice staff always smiling, clean and spacious room. I really recommend this hotel. My best stay in Shizuoka.
- KuangKuang (8/5): In the center of nearly everything - Some may prefer staying at the hotels right next to the station, but I’d recommend staying at Hotel Garden Square Shizuoka as it’s just in the middle of everything you need.
Hotel Garden Square Shizuoka is best in its location – 8 min walk from station, 2 min walk from all the shopping and dining areas. It sits right across a KTV but their soundproof window is so nicely done that we hear nothing from the street. We stayed at a single room for our first night and then a double room for another 2 nights. We don’t recommend the single room as it’s just too small for 2 people. When you book the room, make sure you pick "non-smoking" if you are not a smoker. and don't worry, the wifi is available at room and it's free.
BTW, no need to buy bottles of water. They have a water cooler in the lobby, get your bottle filled as you head out. Stay green.
- Miki_Hsu (10/5): Had a great time staying at this hotel - This hotel is very close to station. 5 mins walk distant. All the amenity is provided. Wifi is only provided at the lobby, but it's enough. If u stay at this hotel, must take a walk at the Japanese garden. They maintain the garden very well. 10 mins staying at the garden could refreshed me a lot. There is a Jazz live house just besides the hotel. It's part of this hotel. It provide best Jazz live and delicious dishes. Must give it a try!!!
Overall, the service was quite nice and efficient. Japanese style breakfast was yummy and quite traditional.
I'll choose to stay here again next time visiting Shizuoka : )
One more thing I would like to mention. There is a coffee shop called hug cafe just at the corner of street. I had a great time having a cup of delicious latte and the relaxing atmosphere at this unique coffee shop. Thank you!
- imaginarts (10/5): Nice garden - Second hotel in Shizuoka and this one is great
Really quite with its little private garden, peaceful in the piddle of the center city.
The room was good. The service also.
Loved to take green tea candy at the entrance : really tasy
Asked to find a good restaurant and they help me, ever more, they came with to show me the exact place and helped me to order. Splendid.
Highly recommended
- Krissi55 (8/5): Accidently landed in Shizuoka - On our way back from Kyoto to Tokyo.
And had to find a last minute hotel room which is affordable and near to the main train station and I was actually quite surprised with this hotel.
Price is ok, rooms are much bigger than I expected, it was clean and very efficient, even when the staff can't really speak english, but it worked out, so happy with the choice. And it is quite central of what we saw
