Guest Reviews
- Praveen (8/5): - Beautiful setting and fabulous evening buffet Room was very warm at night. We turned the thermostat down, but that didn’t help. They only had heavy quilts, which were very warm to sleep under.
- Leesa (8/5): Expensive for what it is - I really want to rave about this property but it’s extremely expensive for what it is.
Reformed rooms, comfortable bed, delicious dinner at the bar (paid for in addition to the room), great service, and lovely view. Parking available at the property. Having traveled around Norway for 2 weeks, this is waaaay more expensive than similar properties. Despite all the good things, we couldn’t get over the price point vs the offering. Also, I understand no hot buffet for breakfast with so few guests, however a menu of options would be helpful.

- Elodie (9/5): Magnificent hotel and setting perfect for relaxing - This hotel is magnificent, the whole experience is splendid. I would return with great joy. The breakfast is incredible, the view in the dining room is spectacular. Just staying at this hotel is worth the trip to Balestrand. They placed us at the top floor in the new building, with a beautiful view part fjord part town and they gave us rooms all next to each other which was very mindful, we appreciated it a lot as it made our stay practical and more enjoyable. It seemed all their rooms have great view. The decor of the hotel is really beautiful both inside and outside, the whole setting in the middle of the fjords is from another world, it's very relaxing, it makes great photos. The checkout at 12pm makes it even greater as we can really relax, of course we can leave our luggage after checkout. The twin rooms are spacious, with a bath and a sofa area, the beds are very comfortable. Supermarket stores are very close by foot, the ferry is right behind the hotel just 5min away. I highly recommend staying at this hotel if you come to Balestrand, it is worth it. Their restaurant is good, I enjoyed their special burger. The staff at the restaurant was very friendly and chic, we felt very well taken care of. I honestly doubted Balestrand was worth visiting as there didn't seem much to do, but just experiencing this hotel makes it worth it and you can make it into the relaxing step of your journey. You can access the point of interests of Balestrand by walk from the hotel. It's too bad the hotel doesn't organize a tour to the Urnes Stave church, we didn't have a car and would have appreciated this tour particularly. But if other activities were proposed we would have been interested too but unfortunately I didn't see other activities organized by the hotel either.
The buffet dinner is so expensive: 850 NOK. I would have liked to check it out but the price was really too exagerated. Fortunately if you have the breafast included you can still experience their superb dining room during breakfast. Also their bar serves regular meals with regular prices. But too bad for the buffet!
The only reason I don't put a 10 is the staff, some of the staff could be nicer. I asked the receptionist if it was possible to borrow five spoons, and instead of telling me kindly yes it is possible, and that I could get them at the bar, she didn't answer and dismissed me by telling me to go check this with the bar which left me with the impression she didn't know. Surprised I asked if she knew or not if it's possible since it is the reception! and then only she said yes it's possible go ask the bar, not in a nice way. Disappointing.

- Vicki (6/5): - Interesting little town and the old part of the hotel is charming. This place is set up for the big cruise drop off. It’s a big place in a quaint town and the newer part info the hotel is finished as cheaply as possible. I’d advise staying in another town if you aren’t cruising.
- Steffen (8/5): - Stylish and classic Needs a bit of maintenance/renovation.
- Åsa (7/5): -
- Ann (10/5): -
- Åge (7/5): - Beliggenheten med utsikten Mangel på spisesteder/utvalg
- Chris (9/5): Characterful hotel - It is a lovely hotel with its own style. Very pleasant public rooms with lots of character. The food is excellent. The location is stunning. Our room was comfortable and had a balcony with good views.
- Oddhild (7/5): - Koselig og gammelt hotell. For det meste god service. En litt imøtekommende eldre mann i resepsjonen trakk ned heilhetsintrykket.

- Omyra (10/5): Amazing experience and stay, takes full advantage of Norway's nature and its beauty - The views from the hotel (everywhere practically) are fantastic, very relaxing and they instill a sense of happiness and wellbeing, but that is what Norway is known for, although the hotel is perfectly positioned to take advantage of it's surroundings. Dinner was a bit costly, but it's difficult to compare...
- stephen (9/5): - Beautiful spot. Rooms in modern section perfectly acceptable
- Mary (10/5): Just beautiful and so delicious and relaxing. - We stayed in the old part of the hotel and it was lovely. Our room had a balcony overlooking the beautiful fjord. The food was delicious. We went on a nature hike up the mountain, and went to the Viking mound. The overall vibe is so relaxing. Could stay here forever. Noise from the bar below while we were trying to sleep or relax, but that is the price of staying in the old part and well worth it!
- Sarah (10/5): Exceptional -
- Abdarhman (10/5): Restaurant is the best - Lovely place to stay None
- Kcdudes (7/5): Cold room in historic setting. Way overrated unless staying in the historic building. - The old world charm of the historic building was delightful. Breakfast in the old building was excellent. We had a room in the "modern building" which was not modern at all. Rooms were very small, cold and unwelcoming. Balcony had a concrete railing with a painted pipe on top. Yuk. No sense of luxury at all. Very much an economy room. We had to ask for shampoo. No bathmat for the shower. And is there some reason every hotel on the planet does not yet have a USB charging port on each side of the bed????
- Brian (7/5): Good - Staff is great, and the main building (old house) is very nice from the inside and outside. Located just by the fjord… really nice. No floor towel to get out of the shower, no shampoo/conditioner, ilumination in the rooms is very poor, shower pressure is on the low side. My room looked and felt VERY outdated. And the horrible building where the rooms are… ruins the entire town.
- Marc (8/5): Lovely hotel, friendly staff, nice lounge and good food. - Buffet Room was a bit small
- Kajsa (10/5): Lovely hotel with great view - It’s a lovely hotel situated near the water. The room was spacious with a nice view. Great breakfast buffet.
- Abbas (8/5): Very good -
- Carolina (10/5): Exceptional -
- Paula (9/5): Great views - We enjoyed our stay. The view from our room was beautiful. Our room in the old building was well appointed and comfortable. It seemed recently renovated and doesn't match the dingy description cited by others. You're paying for the destination. The breakfast was ample and delicious. The views from the common areas was gorgeous. Please stop by Ciderhuset for cider and a meal. It's a lovely property up the road a ways. It was one of the best meals we had in Norway.
- Claire (10/5): Exceptional - Fantastic stay , wonderful hospitality, brilliant service , excellent food , so very peaceful. couldn’t ask for more .
- Rick (9/5): Superb -
- Adam (10/5): Exceptional -
- Elizabeth (10/5): Fantastic experience- never forget! - Gorgeous!
Staff was the best ever!!!
I forgot something . Asked Nina the receptionist where I could look d purchase it & no one had it. She brought me hers from her home! Wow! Can’t say enough about how kind she was!
- Antony (8/5): Very good -
- Adam (10/5): Hotel is a little dated, but has lots of history and a good restaurant - Hiking beautiful location if you have a rental car, there is an epic drive that goes up the most amazing switchback and then a spectacular hike along a waterfall about one hour dr. from the hotel
- Colbie (8/5): Very good - The view from the room were amazing! The historic part of the hotel is a must see. There's alot of history there, including antiques and old artwork. The view from the dining and lounging areas is also spectacular. The dining options were great. We chose to eat a la carte in the bar for dinner and a nice buffet for breakfast. We were there in early October, which is apparently the end of the season. Unfortunately, everything in town was closed. It's a beautiful landscape to walk around though.
- Jennie (8/5): Pleasant stay in an amazing environment - Beautiful location No fridge in the room
- Kumud (8/5): Good memories in totality - The breakfast was served in the old heritage dining room. The place was huge and high ceilings. The views of the fjords and village were stunning. The breakfast variety was best quality and variety. Myself and my husband are vegetarians but still had many options. I feel the service could have been more attentive. The young boys and girls were’nt really bothered and would’nt even look up to the guest. They were like robots.
- Labelle (5/5): Passable - Breakfast was good. Nice view. Check in good. Rooms small and price paid high compared to much better hotels we stayed in Norway. Not good value.
- Fernando (10/5): Exceptional -
- Denise (9/5): Fabulous place! - Breakfast & dinner were delicious!
- Craig (10/5): Wonderful spot to enjoy fjords - The location was fantastic!
Staff very friendly.
Bar staff incredible!! Loved eating on the terrace. Need creamer with coffee in rooms.
- Yi (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gwen (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mcmorrow (9/5): Superb - Beautiful old hotel with many lovely old antique rooms to have a cocktail of after dinner coffee or tea There is a very new section that is functional and has great views but i think i would have preferred the old section. This is unclear when making resvs
- Clark (9/5): We loved staying here. We felt we got good value for our money, and would definitely stay here again. Thanks! - Great location. The historic building was beautiful. Most rooms I think have a beautiful view. It was clean and the staff were friendly. Breakfast was very good, in a wonderful room. The rooms are a bit dated, but it didn’t bother us too much. The elevator made creaky noises, which was a bit unsettling, but it functioned, so it was OK.
- Deb (8/5): Very good - Great location, easy to catch the ferry, enjoyed the view from the balcony. The bar menu was quite good -- and a better option for our casual crowd than the dining room for dinner.
- Helen (5/5): Great views, woeful room quality - Brilliant fjord views Rooms were really tired and old - they need complete renovation.
Hot Breakfast items were completely cold. Had to send them back twice, eventually they heated up in microwave
- Kristen (9/5): Beautiful hotel. -
- Eric (9/5): Lovely - Amazing location
Great view
Beautiful old part of the hotel
Fabulous Buffet dinner and breakfast Bathrooms very old fashioned
- Jo (9/5): Superb -
- Adrienne (10/5): Exceptional -
- Maria (10/5): A plunge in beauty and nature - It was amazing A magical place, the most beautiful arquitecture
- David (5/5): Ordered the $90pp pris fixe, plus wine, beautifully located table, but courses were tiny, long delays between courses, - Location Restaurant: high prices, mediocre food, sub par service
- Richard (9/5): Superb - Breakfast, location, view.
- Maria (10/5): Tradition, history, beauty - Everything, it is AMAZING Nothing, it is the most beautiful place. Absolutely perfect
- Erlend (9/5): Superb - Breakfast great Rooms slightly dated
- Mitchell (7/5): Great location for basic lodging. - Great location close to town and the ferry dock. Great view from out 7th floor room. Breakfast was good with much choice of food items. Pretty small room with basic furnishings. Thin walls let neighbor noise carry into our room.
- Craig (10/5): A wonderful hotel in a fabulous location - Beautiful , old world hotel in a stunning location; staff very nice; room was big and view from the room was lovely; grounds well maintained; grocery store and restaurants near by; Restaurant evening meal was over-whelmed on our first night there--a tour group...we therefore ate in the bar area and the food was delicious. Tea and coffee are available in the lounge area in the evening and this is a wonderful treat; Breakfast is outstanding and the view from the breakfast room is wonderful; there is a steep walkway leading from the ferry dock to the hotel; it has no railing and so in wet weather it is particularly treacherous.
- Shivam (9/5): Superb - - beautiful property with amazing views of the fjord
- nice comfortable room for a family of 4
- very good breakfast
- Britta (10/5): Wish I stayed longer in this paradise - EVERYTHING!! The location is paradise, the hotel is super charismatic and fantastic. Priceless view!!! Staff was great. The breakfast was a dream, I couldn’t get enough of the salmon! Absolutely nothing
- James (10/5): Exceptional -
- Josep (8/5): Massa car -
- Martin (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful location. Charming, historic hotel. Rooms were comfortable. Provided tv and USB outlet.
- Karen (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sumner (10/5): Exceptional -
- Nicola (6/5): Hotel basking in former glory in great location. - Great location with excellent views and nice balcony. The original hotel building is grand but rooms are in the ugly block behind. Rooms are very basic and not luxurious. It was clean but the pillows were inadequate. Bathroom very old and dated with basic over bath shower. Very disappointed with toiletries. There was a locked wall mounted soap dispenser which had the most basic chemical scented soap in it … same in shower. Nothing else provided and not what I would expect for the price.
- Todd (7/5): We enjoyed our brief time. The room was not the one we requested or paid for but the hotel made good - Great breakfast. View from balcony. Room was not what we requested.
- Ira (9/5): Excellent, as rated above. - Excellent breakfast buffet, although missing any sweet pastry.
The dining room was elegant and the views lovely The weather - not the hotel’s fault…
- Higinio (8/5): It was a beautiful property and the views were spectacular. - Excellent views! Breakfast was good, but dinner could have better for the price.
- Sharon (10/5): Exceptional -
- David (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mary (6/5): Pleasant -
- Stephen (5/5): Passable - Our room was very tired. Renovated room
- Bjingvar (8/5): Very good -
- Joel (6/5): 2 star hotel. - We had a view of fjord which was great. Hotel full of tour bus guests so hotel was very noisy and breakfast room unpleasant.
- John (9/5): Beautiful setting and so many great public seating rooms to enjoy. The views were spectacular. - Wonderful selection of breakfast items.
- Sarah (7/5): Good -
- Joseph (5/5): Comfortable but clearly not providing nice amenities. No wifi in main dining room etc. - Beautiful old hotel but a very average new addition. No amenities!! No shampoo, conditioner, bath mat, wash cloth, safe, Kleenex etc.
- David (9/5): Great stay in a beautiful location - Traditional room had plenty of space. Food was excellent.
- Pat (8/5): Very good -
- Nigham (4/5): Very disappointed ! - The location
And the breakfast they serve. The picture shown of the hotel is not where everyone gets a room.
Cannot rate the hotel room more than 2 or 3 star. Not good value for money. Very dated bathroom and infact this wing.
Corridor smelling of fish
Front desk staff not helpful or courteous.
Will not recommend as a 4 star hotel.
- Duncan (9/5): Great location in old traditional hotel - The view from our balcony was great as was the terrace area. The old style old building is interesting. Balestrand is a lovely spot In areas it could do with updating the “modern “ block is no longer modern and lack any personality. It is the same as an airport hotel but a lot more expensive!
It lives on its reputation and lack of competition in the area.
- Debra (7/5): Lovely setting but hotel needs better food options. Service at breakfast was rather mediocre. - Location was wonderful. Beautiful views and setting. No restaurant dinner options other than buffet smorgasboard and we do not care for that type of food or self service . Bar food options very limited.
No air conditioning and it was hot during our stay.
- Marilyn (8/5): Fine view, disappointing, expensive food. - The views of the mountains and fjord from our room were phenomenal. We were blessed with warm, sunny, long days, lighting up the sky, green trees, garden shrubs, blue water so just loafing on the veranda was a special event. The building is of great historical interest. The well known dinner buffet was way more expensive than it should be. The breakfast buffet was included in our plan. The entire dining experience was damaged by flies crawling all over the uncovered food. All the dishes were over-salted, spoiling the flavor. The dining room is set up for large bus tour groups, so chairs and tables were cramped together. We visited in late May, before high season, so the tables were less fully occupied.
- Rina (4/5): In the deep shadow of its own history needing modernization - Fabulous location Cleanness of room was below expectation, staff was unbothered and the facilities are run down urgently requiring an upgrade, overall not at the level of the price.
- Kelvin (10/5): Exceptional -
- James (6/5): Beautiful location. Historic side of hotel very interesting but newer side very minimal. - We stayed in the “newer” part which was a disappointment. We had hoped to stay in historic side. Breakfast was wonderful. Beautiful view from out table by the window. Staff was bare minimum and it was too quiet. Not many people mingling around. We felt like only two guests.
- Jennifer (8/5): We loved our stay, just a shame we were unaware they were closing for winter. - We were unaware that the whole area / hotel shuts down over the winter. We actually left a day early or we wouldn't have been able to catch our ferry! More info on website about this may have been helpful.
