Guest Reviews

- Hiroko (7/5): -
- Anika (9/5): overall I would visit again but now prepared for where the place is lacking - the location was great, kind of in the middle of the ski slope that is also not that frequented by all the ski schools. The staff was great and even gave us many recommendations for restaurants. the view from the room was astounding. the building is quite aged and lack of working wifi is definitely a problem for anyone planning on workcations (phone internet providers have good reception though). it was also a bit curious that we were asked to readjust the gear rented by the hotel by ourselves when it’s pretty obvious our experience was lacking.
- Marcus (9/5): Perfect budget option for a ski getaway - The location is perfect and the price was phenomenal. No restaurants around but the hotel caters buffet breakfast and dinner (shoutout to the tempura master). Had a blast and would recommend for a fantastic budget option. The futons were slightly thin, but adding a second one from the closet helped immensely. The wifi downstairs stopped working for a couple of days but still had mobile reception so no big deal.
- Suzanne (3/5): Aggressive behavior from staff - Ski in ski out in the middle of the mountain. One of the employees (maybe the owner, not sure of his status at the hotel) at check out came around the desk, came close to me, pointed his finger into my face and yelled “get out, get out”. I was asking about the tax fee he was charging us. Wasn’t happy with me asking question (I wasn’t aware of that tax, so I asked questions because never had to pay that kind of taxes before in Japan). Because of that, he didn’t want to provide us the shuttle transport back to the bus stop. That service is included when you book the room because there are no other way to get in and out of Swiss Inn, unless your are on your ski. His behavior was physically aggressif and abusif. There was no discussion possible, just yelling. We got scared and being in a foreign country we did what we were told, we left. We walked down the steep and icy ski hill with all of our suitcases. That was the only choice. There are no taxi services. We made it safely down, took the gondola up and caught the bus on time. So, do I recommand that place? No because of aggressif behavior. Being in the middle of the mountain, you are at the mercy of the hotel.
Run down hotel with junk hanging everywhere.
Old ski equipment (they told me it was half price compared to other places, which wasn’t true). My husband had to change his skis after the first day. Even after changing his skis, he had trouble with them.
Old room with holes in walls and carpet.
Overprice buffet so we bought frozen meal. We saved a lot by doing that.

- Jessica (4/5): -
- Kristen (6/5): - Location was great Definitely has seen better days, and kind of dirty if you go away from the main areas
- Philip (4/5): Probably would not return - Nice view. Hard to get to and from. Not suitable for beginners. No restaurant nearby. No lessons available except in Japanese. Everything closed on Wednesday. Woke up with sore back every morning. Hotel is ageing, more like a lodge.
- Bryce (9/5): I had an amazing time at Shiga Swiss Inn. I absolutely loved it. Any complaint would be nitpicking. Well worth it in eve - Comfortable room, very large compared to every other place I stayed in Japan. Facilities were fine, staff were very friendly and helpful. It is a bit of a mission to get to but the team there were very accomodating organising the shuttle bus and even picking me up at the exact time the main but got me up the mountain. I was the last passenger and I got off the big bus in the snow and the shuttle was there waiting as I had called ahead.
Also as they state on their website, the snow equipment hire is pretty outdated. My second board hire in Hakuba was a much better board that I felt way more comfortable on. Not a big deal but something worth noting.
- Marc (7/5): -
- Milorad (7/5): - Incredibly polite and helpful staff. The hotel is a bit run down.. The rooms are massive.
- Kevin (10/5): -
- Nathan (10/5): Incredible value for the price. - Like others have said, Shiga Swiss Inn has amazing value for the benefits it offers. I was impressed by the service, amenities, and the location. I only planned to make one visit, but decided to come back because of the great value this place offers.
- Stephan (6/5): Ok - Clean quiet and good location The food was always cold even the what was supposed to be hot

- PATRICK (10/5): - Very convenient location. Staff were helpful, courteous and nice. Decor a little dated but I was there to ski. Food was excellent. Would recommend.
- Yvonne (8/5): - Good sized room. Rental gear was good and very reasonable price.
Plenty of food each day. WiFi only available in the foyer. Some food options served cold when they should be warm.
- madison (8/5): -
- Sian (8/5): - Fantastic staff, location and service.
I stayed in a traditional room and it was comfy and clean.

- Live (7/5): - Got sufficient info about skiing. Food was ok. A bit worn down. The rental equipment was old, and not the standard you would expect.
- Craig (9/5): Very much enjoyed! - Very efficient and very friendly staff. Food was very good quality and quantity. Would have appreciated a little more variety over a week.
Onsen was great. Very much enjoyed Tatami mattress was difficult to get comfortable
- MELISSA (7/5): The best staff!! - Staff!! Charming, friendly and extremely helpful. More than made up for anything we didnt like
Ski in ski out
Onsen robes This is a very old.property which could do with a refresh. Microwaves only worked on one floor, hot water for only on one floor etc.

- Isabella (10/5): -
- Kim (7/5): Lovely staff and budget friendly - Staff were exceptionally nice and helpful and the snow was great. Very kind and ski equipment was good quality and cheaper than down the mountain Food options were only a buffet. No coffee machines.
- WEI-PING (9/5): -
- Alina (8/5): Pleasant Stay - Where we can ski in and ski out Nothing much about the properly. Only problem is the equipment rental was lacking and meals get repetitive especially if we stayed for 6 days.
- Ella (8/5): -
- Sam (10/5): - We loved the location, the staff, the meals, the onsen, and all the facilities. A good crowd of fellow guests made it great too!
- Leech (8/5): Location location location - The location was amazing and the price unmatched. Seriously you cannot do better for a ski in ski out resort. Staff were amazing and super helpful, the free shuttle is easy to organise in and out so you can get straight there from a number of bus stops. Be warned when the lifts close you have a bit of a journey to get back, but it’s not the end of the world you can ski (on rough ice) from Hoppo Onsen bus stop if you are really desperate. Seriously though in terms of value for money I have never found a better ski hotel. The wifi was sub par and data connection spotty. I don’t know how it happened but literally everywhere else on the mountain had connection except the hotel. Still, I came there to ski so not a dealbreaker at all. The buffet dinner was good but a little pricey, considering options on the mountain are cheaper there is no point getting breakfast.
- Megan (9/5): Staff were really friendly and helpful. Food was good. I stayed in a traditional room with the mat to sleep on and I was -
- Sammy (1/5): Go somewhere else as it’s will not suit anyone - Nothing So old and looks like never maintained. The place is back in the 60s. Very run down and definitely never recommend. Go somewhere else
- achoco (8/5): -
- Rachel (5/5): Great location, lovely staff, in a hotel that is crying out for a bit of a refresh! - The location of Swiss Inn is great - having never been to Shiga before we only appreciated the location after we worked out the lay of the resorts. Swiss Inn is a cheap on snow option.
We loved the outdoor onsen.
The buffet meals were good but limited vegetarian options and not the best value… having been in other resorts it felt expensive for the quality and you’re a captured audience because there’s no where else you can go (easily that is).
The staff were lovely and did their best.
Despite lots of warnings about driving, our 4wd with snow tyres had no issue getting in or out. The hotel is old so while I’m sure it’s probably been cleaned, it feels unclean.
No wifi in rooms, no fridge in rooms although the staff allowed us to use a common one for our child’s medicine.
- 眞鍋 (8/5): -
- Ron Sung (9/5): - Good price. Ski in ski out! Staff was amazing The hotel is isolated from other restaurants and the main ski lodge, but you can pay like 1000yen per person for round trips
- Delphine (6/5): A good stay overall - Ski in ski out was so good. Buffet options were great for kids and staff were really lovely The property is a little run down, and could benefit from fresh paint and refurbishing.
- Lillie (10/5): - Beautiful location. Easy ski in ski out. Staff extremely helpful and friendly staff. Felt like a home away from home. Wonderful food. Would definitely recommend to others and stay here again. Thank you so much for your care and attentiveness. The slope down from the hotel was a bit steep for my daughter so that was a struggle but everything else was wonderful. Thank you :)
- Marcus (9/5): Naomi and the team do a fantastic job! Great board/ski access, except for early beginners, however you can bus arou - The location for snow access, right onto the run and lift right back up. The staff were exceptional so friendly and helpful. They tried as hard as they could with language barrier. Food was amazing, a bit repetitive but great buffet for dinner and breakfast. Had both women’s and men’s indoor and outdoor onsen. Sleeping a bit uncomfortable but it’s fine for the money…
- Julie (8/5): Loved it and a great start to our ski vacation. - Ski in and ski out, you couldn't ask for better really. Our hosts and staff were really friendly and helped wherever they could, giving lots of advice. A wide variety of food and buffet style was excellent. The onsen was fabulous. Our room was sunny and warm and had great views. We really enjoyed our stay here and wished it was a bit longer to enjoy all of the ski terrain. Four nights was not quite enough. It is dated in it's decor, but hey it definitely has character. Nothing really negative to say about Shiga Swiss Hotel.
- Nhu Phuong (4/5): -
- Emma (10/5): - I can highly recommend this hotel! I stayed here for 2 nights and it felt like I was at home. The owner of the hotel is the kindest and most welcoming person I’ve met during my travel so far. He gave me so many helpful recommendations for Yamanouchi and Nagano and told me many interesting things about Japanese culture. Despite this hotel is usually known for its great winter sport location I had a wonderful time here in October (without snow). The hotel is surrounded by natur and a scenic view of the mountains and offers a large lobby area and 2 Onsen with a wonderful view and calming atmosphere. There are 3 different gondola stations near the hotel that promise a good view and let you experience to “fly” over the mountains. The city centre of Yamanouchi and the snow monkey park can be reached by bus and are perfect for a day trip. I’m very grateful for my stay here and would always choose this hotel again in the future (with and without snow). 本当にありがとう!愛をこめて。

- 井上 (4/5): 避暑地を求めた宿泊施設 - 食事が予想以上に豪華だったから バリヤフリーでない
部屋が暑いがエアコンがない
- Steve (10/5): Exceptional -
- Chloe (8/5): Very good -
- Jasper (9/5): Superb -
- Maria (7/5): Good -
- Dunkel (7/5): Good - Location Getting a little tired
- Brendan (7/5): Good -
- Ash (4/5): Great location but desperately in need of modernisation - Great location: perfect ski-in/ski-out; great local beer on tap in the small bar. Desperately in need of 100% modernisation: bedroom rooms are very basic; restaurant is an overpriced cafeteria which runs out of choices 20 mins after the meal start time.
- Alistair (8/5): Very good - The buffet meals for breakfast and dinner were excellent. More range in the ski hire equipment.
- Steve (7/5): Typical Japanese low end ski hotel. - Friendly and helpful staff. They went out of their way to arrange a wheelchair for our family member who sprained their ankle snowboarding. The onsen was excellent. Very clean water and warm.
Free transfer to and from the bus stop. Dated decor. The bath had not been cleaned. Wifi only works in the lobby.
Ski in was via a black slope with a tight undulating track (beginners or lesser skilled need to use the blue slope (marked as green!) then chairlift and walk.
Beer was expensive.
Food was ok with very few or no vegetarian options.
- Ursula (7/5): Good location, affordable and very convenient including dinner and breakfast - Location good. Breakfast and dinner offered good variety. The place looked a little tired and would benefit from some renovations.
- Justin (3/5): It felt like a money trap! - The staff was polite and helpful with information. Location is terrible if you drive your own car. If you don’t have 4wheel drive with snow tires or chains you will get stuck. Staff won’t help you. You have to pay to use there shuttle. The hotel is old and run down compared to others in the area. I chose this because it was the only one available. If guest are loud you hear everything in your room. If you don’t rent ski gear with them they won’t help you with yours. Prices seem higher here for vending machines and food than the other hotels.
- Kyoko (8/5): quite warm - The room was so warm Bathroom can be cleaner
- Neil (7/5): Good -
- Stephanus (10/5): Exceptional -
- Brendan (1/5): Worst hotel ever - Nothing Hotel is about 1000 years old. Peeling paint, torn carpet, junk furniture lying around. Cold. No food except breakfast. Remote location well away from any facilities. And they charged $10 to drive you to a bus transfer station where you could catch an occasional bus to facilities 15 minutes away. Everything about the hotel was bad except the poor lady on front desk who tried very hard. I quit after one night and spent a heap of money getting something decent. The property was hugely misrepresented on booking.com
- Timo (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lance (8/5): Very good - Location was everything... Ski in and out on the side of a mountain in dumps of snow...amazing Walking 800m in the snowfall and missing my bus by 2 minutes to wait 2 and half hours for next bus
- David (7/5): Good - Food was good. Accomodation was roomy and warm. Location is fantastic, staff were very helpful. The team managed transfers in very heavy snow conditions effectively and with a smile. Access to slopes is excellent ski in and ski out. The bathroom sink drained very slowly and was not very clean. The toilet also could have been cleaner.
- Stephanus (10/5): An authentic Japanese ski experience - with amazing onsen. - Awesome location for ski in ski out in a world class ski resort.
- Dale (9/5): A very nice and friendly Japanese style ski hotel on the snow. - It was a good authentic Japanese ski hotel. The staff were very pleasant and helpful. The people at reception were very helpful even though English is not their first language. The ski hire/rental service was very easy. It was nice to be able to ski from the hotel in the morning and then back again at the end of the day.
The meals provided are good for a buffet style service. It is important to have meals included with the accommodation as Shiga Kogen is not really a location where it is easy to dine out so having meals in the hotel is a must. There is only wifi in the reception area, so it is important to bring some sort of mobile data service if you need to do work remotely or use the internet a lot.
- Michael (5/5): Passable -
- Matt_f_matt (6/5): Pleasant - Location is good for skiing but one is stuck at the Inn for dinner. Dinner was really disappointing, breakfast was ok. Eating room is like in a prison.
No staff around from 11-3 every day. So no way to get a lift to the nearest bus stop.
Also, the place is _very_ dated.
- Neil (8/5): Great, cheap hotel to ski out from. - Location, facilities and slopes were great. The hotel is located beside the slopes so you can ski out from the hotel. The hotel is older.
- Lim (8/5): Very good -
- Joshua (10/5): Highly recommended for experiencing Shiga Kogen ski in/ski out. - Excellent location, friendly staff and fantastic breakfast. Onsen facilities were lovely, and the Japanese-style room was very clean and comfy. Staff went above and beyond for our needs, transporting us to and from Ichinose, up to Hoppo Onsen, etc., and are experts on anything you want to do in the area; for example, they helped to plan our trip to the Snow Monkeys one afternoon. They bring you dinner from Ichinose's food trucks if you order it, and there is a buffet dinner available. Snowboard options were a little light but they had a table with screwdrivers for you to adjust your own gear.
- Natasha (9/5): A great budget accomodation option - On the contrary to some other reviews we read, we liked staying here and found the accomodation comfortable for a budget accom, staff were friendly, the buffet dinner was good, a very spacious room by Japanese standards, great ski in and ski out location to the slopes. The decor is outdated and only Fluro lighting in the room
- Larry (7/5): Excellent ski in ski out location! - I loved that you could walk out the front door, strap in, and start snowboarding. Literally right on the side of a ski run. That only a 4x4 with chains is the only way to get to the hotel. You can however park up top and get a ride from the hotel staff.
- Dale (8/5): Great value for money with ski in /ski out access. - Great value for money being more than half the price of any other place in Shiga Kogen. The staff were friendly and welcoming. We enjoyed the Onsen every night (my two children aged 5 & 7 are now converted to Onsens) after skiing. Ski in/out access was fantastic and it is a short lift ride away from Ichinose ski area which provides access to other great spots such as Yakebetai. A shuttle bus is also provided for access to the hotel from Hoppo Onsen bus stop (you cannot access the hotel without a 4WD). If you are lucky you might get some monkeys visiting the hotel too! If you are planning on using international ski schools for your children then you will need to take the bus to Okushiga or it is 1-2 hrs to ski there. The hotel is dated, so don't go in expecting the Ritz, but as I said earlier it is great value for money. Key points for improvement from us would be to have bowls/utensils available for use with the microwave and a greater range of convenience items in the store for purchase.
- Erik (8/5): Very good - Nice with Onsen after a day of skiing. Breakfast and dinner food buffet was great! Nice, helpful staff. Unpractical that 4wd is needed to get all the way to the hotel. But there is a shuttle. But the shuttle doesn't go after 8 pm so be sure to arrive before that.
Generally old building. But okay for our standards
- Ravi (8/5): Very good -
- Ben (9/5): If you’re ok with older facilities this is absolutely worth the low price - The owners are very generous and welcoming, and its incredible value. The food was lovely and good value It appears on maps to be a blue/red ski run into the property, but it’s actually a black. The other way in is down an easy but long blue and then catching a chairlift up. So keep that in mind. Not beginner friendly. As others have said the facilities are pretty old and the wifi doesnt work well but still, the value is pretty amazing
- Shaheen (6/5): Cheaper place to stay that has everything you need, but a bit run down and could be more accommodating. - The convenience to the mountain was great, but the location to other restaurants and the main lodge was a bit far. You need a car if you want to leave the resort to do anything other than skiing. The rooms and the onsen were definitely a bit run down. The staff were friendly, but were too strict against letting friends hang out in the hotel. They only let guests go up to rooms, but that wasn’t mentioned anywhere. I booked a room big enough for four with the intention of friends hanging out and playing games, but they were watching the door like a hawk to prevent outsiders in. That was unfortunate that even if they weren’t staying, they couldn’t enjoy it.
- Mayuko (8/5): Very good -
- Wai (1/5): Worst stay I have ever been, it’s blacklisted for me - Absolutely nothing, if I have to say one thing, the view outside the window. Everything.
1. Unhelpful staff members, not even the language barrier but unmotivated, insincere staff in helping guests navigate through troubles.
2. Awful location, what kind of hotel is positioned at the top of the hill, requires a lift chair to get it, and expects 500 yen for every transport? And have the audacity to call yourself a ski inn ski out? Pick up times have never been more inconvenient, basically limiting any access at reasonable times. Call for pick up, there is no answer, no one in reception ever
3. Awful facilities, public bath is so dirty, visible particles are floating on the surface
4. No wifi, no data service
5. Insufficient information, the most useless shit is posted while the most important information has been COMPLETELY OBLIVIOUS, such as the inconvenient location, pick up times, fees for transport
5. ALL TOILETRIES ARE EMPTY FOR OVER TWO DAYS? Do you expect me to wash myself with monkey piss
6. Room is extremely dirty, especially toilet, really really uncomfortable
- Sharad (8/5): Very good -
- Tharani (9/5): Superb -
- Lin (1/5): the worst experience you can get on new years eve - bad communication with customers, replying in Japanese all the way through, have to use translate app to understand what they are saying. the staff never try to help.
the location of the hotel is very remote and difficult to access by public transport.
