• baglan7 (8/5): Convenient and Welcoming Hotel - As others have said, this hotel is conveniently located just a few steps from the railway station. We had a friendly welcome at check in. Our room was quite small but perfectly adequate - quiet and comfortable. We ate in the hotel restaurant for dinner. There are not many other choices in Kakunodate. Fortunately we booked a table for dinner when we checked in. The restaurant is very small and has a limited menu - mainly noodle dishes. There was a sign saying that dinner was exclusively for hotel guests but when we arrived for dinner they were turning away prospective guests who had not reserved a table. Breakfast was served in the same restaurant. There may have been a wait if all the tables were full but we were accommodated right away. There was a reasonable choice including Japanese and Western food. The coffee was very good. It is an easy walk to the Samurai area and the river. There are some restaurants near the Samurai house street but not sure if any are open for dinner.

• Joyce (6/5): - Stayed for 1 night. Very convenient location right next to the train station. Very walkable to the Samurai district. The service was great. We arrived to the town very late after a full day of travel, and the receptionists were very helpful - they seemed to have been waiting for us as we might’ve been the very last guest to arrive for the night. Overall it was a good stay - did the job of providing a place to sleep for a day trip. The included breakfast was satisfactory - but glad we didn’t have to pay extra for it. This might be an older hotel as the room was dusty & there was some minor mold in the bathroom doorway that got missed with cleaning. I’d say it’s more expensive than what it’s worth, but hotels in the area seem to all cost a little more.

• Paul (8/5): A pleasant, friendly, inexpensive hotel - Kakunodate is more like a large village than a town, and there are few hotels. Folkloro is ideally situated next to the railway station, so a very short walk when carrying heavy suitcases was most welcome. The staff members were all lovely and very helpful. The rooms are reasonably large, have comfortable beds and a nice bathroom area, but a basic clothes rail and no cupboards. The breakfast was a small buffet with Japanese and European foods available, all very nice. It was an easy walk to the Samurai areas and the restaurants, and a shop was 100 metres away. The information centre was also next to the railway.

• Jesse (10/5): The best staff - This was our second time staying here in 4 days and the staff is amazing. They of course recognized us and were incredibly friendly. The check-in and check-out process is simple.

• Leah (10/5): Perfect stay - This was the perfect location. Right next to the train station and in a nice quaint town with the samurai house street. The employees were extremely nice and attentive and the breakfast buffet was great.

We dropped our luggage at the hotel in a.m. and spent the day walking around Kakunodate (1 day is enough...actually, probably just a day trip from Akita would make sense). This is not the busy season though the autumn colors of the trees were spectacular. The town is very quiet and very few restaurants were open in the evening. There is nothing near the train station. We ended up eating at the hotel which was, surprisingly, good and very inexpensive. The hotel staff is very perky and as with everywhere in Japan, place is well maintained, clean and functional. I would definitely recommend this hotel if planning to stay in Kakunodate overnight.

• THAM38 (6/5): Location &Proximity to JR station - Had to book here as all other properties are full on 6thMay. There’s no single occupancy unit available, so i was staying in a double bedroom facing the back yard,on ground floor Standard amenities are placed in the room, no English ch available in TV, pretty much all the local chain hotel does the same! AC control doesn’t works well at night, adjusted few times but still didn’t feel the cool, probably centralised system. Breakfast is traditional…totally love it.
• Sharon (10/5): - Comfortable two-night stay, very convenient as it's right across from the station and has its own restaurant. I spent several pleasant hours exploring the town's old houses and shops, and then was able to get a bookable community taxi (with the help of the helpful tourist information office located next to the station) very cheaply to go out and visit Dakigaeri Gorge which was beautiful even in the rain. My room was quite a good size , I could open the window, it all seemed fairly new and well kept.
• Ginney55 (10/5): Great location next to station - This hotel is located next to the train station and we had a very good dinner there and their breakfast is great too. I was so surprised that it was quiet. Despite the fact it was next to the train station. I was disappointed in the town because now there were no good restaurants open in the evening, probably because the cherry blossoms were done blooming.

• Masayosi (8/5): - スタッフの皆さんは親切で丁寧でした。駅の隣にあり新幹線利用だと非常に好立地と言えますが、武家屋敷地区までは結構歩くことになりました。 部屋はビジネスホテルに比べて多少広い程度ではありますが特に問題はありませんでした。 部屋が階段の真横だったので他のお客さんの足音がうるさいかと心配でしたが、特に問題はありませんでした。 問題はバスルームと部屋の床の段差がかなりあったこと。毎回昇り降りする感じで、高齢者の人だと結構苦労するのではないかと思いました。
• Sara (10/5): Nice, convenient, comfy - Right next to the JR station (you don't even have to cross the street). The tourist office is on the other side of the station. Very convenient location. About 15 minutes from the Samurai town. They have a restaurant in the hotel with a nice variety of local dishes. Comfortable bed (and 2 pillows! a rarity in Japanese hotels), nice and toasty warm (which is helpful when it's literally freezing outside).
• MAMI (6/5): 少し残念。 - 帰りの日に荷物を預かっていただいたのですが、暖房器具でも近くにあったのか、荷物が温まってしまっていた。お土産や荷物って、あらゆる種類のものがあるので、温まってしまうのはまずいこともありますよ。私もがっかりしました。

Small charming hotel Nice, courteous and efficient reception and service. Good, clean and comfortable room. Breakfast and dinner a pleasant experience. I am glad, we stayed there.
• lbe2013 (10/5): Kakunodate Sakura Festival - Stayed here with my girlfriend for a night while in Kakunodate -a small town known for its Sakura and samurai houses. The place is a cute, almost Ryokan looking place right by the train station (it’s not a Ryokan-it just looks like one). It’s a bit of a walk into town, but it’s not bad -a nice way to stroll through a quieter, more quaint side of Japan. The staff also were very friendly, and gave us free gifts and snacks (little mirrors with lacquered cherrywood finish and squid crackers). Breakfast was decent too, and is served in the little restaurant next to the lobby. The room is small (but so are almost all hotel rooms in Japan), but again cozy. The room we had was a two bed, so it’s not exclusive for couples.
• GraftonRiverguide (8/5): Comfortable and convenient - We stayed here for a night while visiting Kakunodate and found it a satisfactory place to stay. It is modern and the rooms are well equipped and quiet. I expected noise given its proximity to the railway station but it is a small regional station with few movements particularly at night and noise was not intrusive. Staff were courteous and efficient and we dined in the restaurant and had nice meals for both dinner and breakfast. The hotel is not really distinctively Japanese and lacks the quirkiness of many country hotels but does everything you need well. Particularly for those travelling by train it is super convenient and it has adjacent parking if you are in a car. Be aware it is a trek to the main tourist areas but there are local buses you can use.
• TassieTripping (8/5): Great small hotel next to the station - Apart from the minute's walk from the station, the staff at the hotel were very friendly and helpful. I stayed in a ground floor room which was a change (there were only two floors). The room was a large twin and there was a good restaurant attached to the hotel too.
• tomasf572 (8/5): Very practical and comfortable - I I was travelling alone by motorcycle, and the free parking was really convenient. For your information they have around 10 parking spaces directly behind the hotel. I stayed 1 night in a double twin due to the fact that the singles were already gone, but the price was still very competitive compared to hotels in the area. I was surprised how spacious the room was compared to what I usually get in Japan for this price range. The bathroom is also wide and comfortable even for taller people, I especially enjoyed the shower which was at a good height and had a powerful pressure. Free wifi is not secured with a password, but the speed is just fine. The convenient location does mean that on one side of the hotel you will be exposed to the train tracks. However I didn't experience any nuisance in my case, but then again I did check out very early. First restaurants and convenience stores are a 5-10 minute walk from the hotel. Going to the Samurai district will take you around 15-20 minutes by foot. However if you don't feel like going to the town centre for dinner, you can use the restaurant of the hotel. If you do go out, you have to leave your (large) room key at the front desk. Also it is necessary to inform the staff if you will return past a certain time (I believe it was 23:00). The staff themselves were very helpful, and their level of English was adequate. They were happy to help with recommending a restaurant in town, and assisting me with my early checkout. When I asked for some tissues to clean the visor of my helmet, they even let me keep the entire pack which I very much appreciated. All in all a great budget hotel, clean and spacious, conveniently located and helpful staff.
• Geoviki (8/5): Great location for shinkansen - This historic town is on the Akita shinkansen line so the access is easy. There aren't many hotels in Kakunodate proper, so your choice is pretty limited, but saying that, I'd choose this small hotel even if there were lots of choices. The staff are very welcoming. We stayed in a standard twin room - peeking in the deluxe rooms, I wish we'd have been able to snag one of those, but they were booked months ahead by a (small) tour group. The buffet breakfast was good, and we ate dinner both nights there as well because we didn't feel like walking back outside into town. It doesn't have its own onsen/sento (public bath) so we went into town and used the one there. Worth the walk.
• iwantgoodfoodnow (8/5): Value for money and close to sights - Value for money hotel with good breakfast and good sized rooms and parking. Short walk to the river where the hiburi matsuri was ongoing and food in town. Also close to the samurai houses and heritage centers.
• francescays (10/5): Amazing service - This hotel is located just text to the station, less than 1 minutes walk. We arrived earlier than check in time, so we left our suitcase there and went for a walk. When we came back to check in, our suitcases were already in the room. I remember they serve breakfast from 7, but we needed to take train around 7:10am. So we said to the staff that we won’t have time for breakfast. Then they offered us to serve breakfast at 6:45, so we can quickly eat!! Thank you so much for your amazing hospitality!! Room was very clean and descent size, and easy walking distance to samurai district. Highly recommended.
• Joy_Sinha (10/5): Wonderful overnight stay - Conveniently located besides the JR Kakunodate station. It is accessible from Akita station. The hotel staff are very friendly and helpful. My stay was overnight booking in a standard room including breakfast. The room was well equipped and spotlessly clean. Being winter, the in room facilities were comfortable. The locations of interest in Kakunodate are very close and a walking distance from this hotel. Overall, a great stay here.
• swloo_sg (10/5): Excellent Hotel for Stay and Food - The hotel is just besides the train station and a short 10 mins walk to the samurai town. They serve simple but delicious breakfast. Their dinner is serve with local ingredients and taste excellent. Highly recommended.
• M021958 (10/5): Great option for overnight stay - I stayed here as it was right next to the train station. Although there is not much English spoken, the room has an English guide and pretty much a hotel is the same all over the world so it’s easy. I liked that I could leave my bags there and just walk up to the samurai district without carrying anything. Room and bed were comfy and big by Japanese standards. Included breakfast which was basic but good enough. I think it was a great bang for buck and would stay there again. If you are a train buff, stay in the rooms on the left hand side of the corridor as they face the train tracks. So you can watch the bullet train go by. They are quiet, so won’t disturb your sleep.
• CG0007 (8/5): value for money, good for long-term travelers - It is located next to the rail station and blends in with the entire scenery there, is very attractive. It is about 15-20 minutes on foot to the BUKEYASHIKI area, hence very convenient to stroll about. Only wireless LAN without security password is available and the number of AC outlets is quite limited so that you should bring an extension cable if you have many gadgets. Dishes of morning buffet are not anything special but nutritionally nice indeed as if we were at home so that are very good for a lengthy trip.
• babylovestotravel (8/5): Convenient location, good value for money - Next door to the station and about 20 minutes pleasant walk to the Samurai Houses. Hotel restaurant a good option. Staff are friendly and rooms are clean. Would stay here again. Our room faced onto the train tracks but we have a 3-year old train obsessed son so we didn't mind at all!
• 201MichaelL (8/5): Friendly hotel, great restaurant - The hotel is just to the left of the station exit. There is no Latin script outside, but believe me if it looks like a hotel it is the Folkloro! To get to the heritage area of town you need to take a pleasant 20 minute walk. We had a very friendly welcome. Our room was small but clean and perfectly adequate for a one-night stay. The walls are thin though. We had two very nice meals in the hotel restaurant (dinner and breakfast). Overall a good choice in Kakunodate.
• Debiku (10/5): Pleasant little town and hotel - The location is great if you arrive into town later at night like us because it's located literally to the left hand side of the train station. Kakunodate is a small quaint township that is most popular during cherry blossom season. But as we visited in winter which is the low season, it's a nice way for us tourists to have a peek into what normal Japanese township is like without the tourism hustle and bustle. The hotel staff spoke limited English was friendly and tried their best to explain everything to us so there were no issues checking in. The rooms were spacious in Japanese Standard with 2 sets of lounge sofas. The carpet and decoration looked a bit dated however very clean. Bathroom/toilet was also very clean and looked new. Like what other reviewers have mentioned, although it is right next to the railway, we did not hear a thing during the night even when the shinkansen speed through the station! Although I originally planned to visit a few restaurants in town, most shops were closed after lunch so we ended up taking a 10 min stroll in to the town centre where the Kakunodate Onsen was. It's a hot spring bathhouse where you can pay few hundred Yen for entry and enjoy the SUPER hot onsen/ bath. The restaurant at the hotel provided dinner until 930pm and also offers traditional dishes such as Kiritanpo and good hearty Udon soup. We really enjoyed our dinner as it was light but not bland, also came in very good portion. Breakfast was included with the stay and like most Japanese hotel it's buffet style with good varieties. (not extensive but here weren't that many groups of customers staying). Overall a very nice hotel and conveniently located. Would recommend to anyone visiting Kakunodate.
