Great location
Wonderful host who was very welcoming Nil- all excellent
- Rhys (9/5): Great value ryokan. - Traditional ryokan with futon beds but with own bathroom as well as public bath. Delicious dinner and breakfast and staff were very kind. All good.
- William (10/5): - Very characterful room and hotel and great food; we felt more immersed in Japanese culture than at any other time on our trip so far. Incredibly helpful and kind manager who ran after us to give us my wife’s clothes she left in the wardrobe on our last day
Niets
- Dorothy (10/5): Fabulous - It is a beautiful ryokan offering a warm welcome and exceptional service. It is a wonderful way to experience traditional Japanese hospitality. It is located a short walk from the station. The room was cosy and en suite, however, we also enjoyed the 'onsen style' bathing area. It was also lovely to have the opportunity to wear a tradtional Yukata to dinner. Our evening meal was exceptionally good and we were very grateful that our vegan requests were able to be so deliciously accommodated. We had a very memorable stay! Nothing.
- russell (9/5): Our room was excellent, the breakfast was superb and the proprietor charming. - This is traditional Ryokan accommodation. Our room was excellent, with a view out to a beautiful small garden. The room was tidy and tastefully decorated. The facilities were good, with separate toilet and a bathroom with a large tub and separate shower.
The breakfast was absolutely superb. A traditional Japanese meal, beautifully presented. We were sorry that we did not arrange to dine there too. Note that there are not many other dining opportunities in Tsuwano in the off season.
The proprietor was extremely helpful and pleasant, and made our stay (2 nights in March) most enjoyable. Our lack of Japanese language was not a problem.

- Sergei (10/5): - A very traditional Japanese accommodation in a very traditional little town. The location is quiet but close to everything. The house is exceptionally clean and the owner really works very hard to take care of her guests, to make sure they have an exceptional stay. We did not have dinner but the breakfast was delicious. Overall a lovely stay.
- Scott (10/5): A wonderful ryokan with friendly staff - Friendly and helpful staff, amazing dinner and breakfast, lovely bath and clean rooms.
- Brian (8/5): - Excellent kaiseki meals Japanese beds not comfortable
- Davide (10/5): - Ryokan autentico. Personale gentilissimo e disponibile, cibo ottimo. Ci siamo trovati bene.
- Keiko (9/5): -
- Robert Australia (9/5): Wonderful taste of traditional Japan in small traditional old town - Very traditional Ryokan over 100 years history
L'emplacement
L'accueil La salle de bains trop petite
Les équipements tres vieillissants
- Toon (9/5): - Located close to the historical street in Tsuwano.
The food was delicious with all kinds of fresh local dishes. Both dinner and breakfast time was flexible which was helpful.
Staff was very kind and helpful.
The room is simple authentic ryokan style, with futon bed.
The public bath is also great to relax after exploring town.
For an authentic ryokan experience in the countryside, the price is correct and reasonable. Nothing :)
- Simon (10/5): A wonderful experience not to be missed. - Lovely building in a great location. The staff were amazing and couldn’t do enough for us. A tremendous experience all round.
Rien.
- Ingeborg (8/5): -
- Kum (8/5): Very good -
- David (10/5): A beautiful renovated historic ryokan in a gorgeous mountain village. - Everything was fabulous. Wonderful meals, a lovely onsen bath, we also received an upgrade to a premium room with a hinoki bathtub.
- Deborah (10/5): Excellent value for money, wonderful Japanese hospitality and food in a historic mountain town. - Tsuwano is a fascinating historic town in the mountains of South Western Honshu. It now has a brand new train station which is probably less quaint than the old one I read about. Noren Yado Meigetsu was fabulous! We were greeted by our hostess and directed to the parking next door. She attended to our every need upon arrival and the women in our group were invited to dress in yukata for dinner. It was so special because she helped us dress with a properly reinforced obi too! Dinner was an amazing array of delicacies, including matsutake mushrooms because we were there in autumn. Breakfast was huge and traditional. The onsen tub is small, essentially private, so needs to be booked and was very pleasant. Sleeping is on traditional futon in a very quaint tatami room. The ryokan is beautifully maintained, and our hostess waved us off the next day. Highly recommended. There was nothing I didn't like.
- Scott (10/5): Friendly staff and a lovely ryokan with excellent food. - Friendly and helpful staff, excellent breakfasts and dinners, spacious and quiet rooms and a good sized public bath.
- Patricia (7/5): If you want a cozy stay with excellent food, this could be the place. - The staff were exceptionally nice. Our tatami room was quite large. The food was amazing, and beautifully presented. It would be nice to have an option for a shorter course meal, or smaller courses. Even though our room was cozy, the lobby was quite cold once the temperature went down. The futon was very thin. I found an extra in the closet and used it the second night. Our futons were not picked up during the day, although my husband thinks this may have been a communication problem. The sink had separate hot and cold water taps which made washing a bit awkward. We were never told about the spa.
- Vincent (10/5): A beautiful and hospitable traditional guest house. - Noren Yado Meigetsu is a traditional Japanese style guest house in a beautiful old building. Our room was very spacious and comfortable, the staff were very friendly and helpful and the meals were exceptional. The salmon cooked in foil was the best dish we have had so far in Japan. A great place to stay! The property was excellent but Tsuwano was very quiet - nearly everything was closed.
- Annc (9/5): Very pleased with our choice, a lovely experience - Fabulous dinner (extra cost). Excellently prepared and very tasty. Good breakfast included. A lovely host. Made us feel very welcome. Small hot public bath. Excellent location just off the main historical street. Tswano is a great place to visit.
- Melna (8/5): Very good -
- Rebecca (9/5): Superb - Truly authentic japanese experience, very polite and helpful staff and tasty food
- Robert (10/5): Wonderful ryokan experience - This was an excellent hospitality experience from beginning to end. It's a traditional ryokan in a side street that can be a little hard to find. We were warmly welcomed with effusive and helpful service on a rainy afternoon. Our spacious room was a gem with a lovely view of the courtyard. Breakfast was amazing - graceful service, presentation was a work of art, and the food was delicious. It was an hour-long cultural immersion. The locally sourced roasted green tea was such a highlight that we bought packets to take home with us. The reasonably short walk from the station can be a little uneven when wheeling suitcases.
- Eve (10/5): This is the place to stay in Tsuwano. - The warmth of welcome was second to none. Such lovely people wanting to make our stay the best it could be and genuine in their desire to assist my husband who is visually impaired. The accommodations were authentic and comfortable. The meals were incredible - with interesting and truly delicious dishes. Care was shown in everything they did.
- Vanessa (8/5): Very good - Very welcoming and attentive.
Excellent traditional breakfast.
Lovely downstairs room with view on the garden. Booked two rooms, and the upstairs one was a bit underwhelming by comparison.
- Selena (8/5): Good value for money, nice experience in old style accommodation - Good location, friendly staff, great breakfast! I was OK with them, but steep stairs.
- Fred (10/5): Authentic Japanese ryokan on a quiet side street - Unexpectedly and without us asking the owner was waiting for us at the station and gave us a ride and remembered us from our stay of many years ago. View from the room is a nice Japanese garden and pond filled with koi. The necessity of using an electronic translator
- Keith (10/5): Exceptional - Wonderful staff....extremely helpful and charming.A lovely Ryokan,,room was comfortable and the vegetarian Japanese breakfast wonderful. N/A
- Allan (9/5): Tsuwano is a very special place and Noren Yado definitely add to the exceptional experience. - All meals were exceptional, Feasts for the eyes and palate. Kaiseki meals were at the gourmet level comparable to other 5 star entities We would highly recommend that the town work on making access at the train station easier, if they hope encourage more tourism. Having to lift luggage over the tracks is extremely difficult for older travelers. Tsuwano is such a lovely town, definitely worth visiting but train station access is a definite problem.
- Akiyoshi (8/5): Comfortable stay. - Breakfast is very good. None.
- Martin (9/5): Lovely traditional ryokan in a magical place - Wonderful staff - not much English but they have a translating machine which was great. They were so welcoming and couldn't do enough for you. They created a calm and peaceful atmosphere in this traditional old guest house, well situated in this lovely little town. Fabulous Japanese style breakfasts. Even though we were expecting traditional sleeping arrangements, and comparing it to our experience at other ryokan, our futons and pillows didn't make for a restful sleep! Also no surprise to us, but be aware that en-suite bathrooms in such old buildings can be cramped.
- Rosalie (10/5): Warm, homely, bubbly and just the most brilliant of meals. - The meals were fantastic, varied and creative. A lot of heart went into each meal.
The staff were bonny and put in the effort and enthusiasm to ensure an excellent stay.
Ensuring my medical food requirement was catered for and then providing me with a card in Japanese that explained this problem so I could forward to other chefs was most considerate. On entering one felt immediately that this was a warm, homely place and you would enjoy your stay. This impression was converted into a fact. There was nothing I didn't like. Thanks to all the staff. 10/10.
- Keller (10/5): Great stay . Perfect location . Owner fantastic - Amazing place.
Highly recommend Futon are thin
- Ceris (9/5): Superb -
- Kirstie (10/5): Exceptional - Perfect! The staff made the stay extra special - they were so kind and welcoming despite our lack of Japanese. The food was consistently exceptional, everything so tasty and beautifully presented. We especially enjoyed getting dressed up in yukata for dinner.
- Glenn (9/5): An excellent taste of traditional Japan. - Breakfast was excellent, as was the bath area. The staff was wonderful and attentive. I have back injuries, so it was difficult for me to sleep on the futon at night. Not the fault of the Noren, but should be considered for others with back issues. Also, stairs are a bit steep, and a bit tough to walk especially while wearing slippers or carrying luggage.
- Alexine (10/5): Exceptional - Exceptional food and friendly welcome from helpful staff.
Wonderful traditional hot bath for us as a couple. We were encouraged and helped to wear traditional clothes which were provided. We were embarrassed that we could not eat all we were offered!
- Barrylyndon (10/5): Perfect stay in a beautiful ryokan with a super friendly host - Very, very, very beautiful ryokan. The owner already greeted us at the entrance and was extremely friendly. The room was also beautiful and made you feel like living in Edo period Japan. The onsen was very relaxing, and after it, my partner was offered to wear a nice yukata for dinner. The food was extraordinary (although it could mostly not be adjusted for my admittedly picky partner, see below), both in terms of taste and in the way it was presented. I would definitely recommend this ryokan anytime to any traveller. Although we asked if my partner's meals could be adjusted, since she doesn't eat seafood or fish (mostly), we were still served two fish meals, two crabs, etc. I understand that the meals are probably chosen individually for each day, leaving not much flexibility for difficult customers like us - which is perfectly fair. However, I ended up having to eat about 1.75 meals each time, since a large part of the food would have otherwise gone to waste, so just leaving out the fish, crabs etc. for my partner would have been the better choice (also from a sustainability standpoint).
- Fumiko (7/5): Good - Very classic style inn Not particularly
- Rodney (10/5): Exceptional -
- Bernard (10/5): Exceptional - We arrived much later than planned due to the cancellation of several trains because of a typhoon, and were very surprised to see someone waiting for us at the train station with a car. The meals are visually beautiful, very tasty and abundant, the staff is very friendly, the facilities ate simple, traditional and enjoyable
- Esme (10/5): Exceptional - A wonderful ryokan in a beautiful peaceful setting. My son and I slept in a room with a private bathroom and separate seating area overlooking the garden and fish pond. It was spacious and very relaxing, especially falling asleep listening to the sound of the water.
The family running the ryokan were so friendly and attentive. The local Japanese breakfast and dinner was vast and delicious.
Highly recommended! It was great that I could use the public bath just for myself but it would have been even better if the water was hotter.
- Mark (10/5): Relax in the mountain town of Tsuwano - What a pleasant Staff at the Noren Yado Meigetsu Ryokan in the small mountain town of Tsuwano. The rooms are large for Japanese standards, properly cooled (if wanted) and have all facilities required. It has a very comfortable public bath, that can be used privately . The breakfast is one of the best I have ever had in Japan. A true Ryokan experience in the mountains. Nothing
- Tanja (10/5): Feels like stepping back in time, so nice! - Lovely stay in an old fashioned ryokan with delicious dinner & breakfast
- Eyüp (10/5): Exceptional -
- Simona (8/5): Very good - nice location, very traditional atmosphere and good food the bath water was a bit cold! otherwise everything was good.
- James (10/5): One our favourite places in all of Japan. - Breakfast was fantastic,( traditional Japanese). The Onsen was beautiful. I can think of nothing I would change.
- Joan (10/5): The Noren Yado Meigetsu Ryokan - the best of Japanese hospitality and offers world class dining. - This 130 year old ryokan is absolutely charming. Our room was on the second floor with a view of the quiet street and the red-tiled roofs of traditional houses with the mountains in the background. The bathroom was modernized with a flush toilet and shower/soaking tub ensuite. During dinner, they roll out the futons and feather comforters on the floor. There was also an alcove next to the windows with sitting chairs and a small table at which to work or have a cup of tea and shoji screens to block it off at night. The low table has a tea service in a lacquer box and there is an electric hot water pot to make tea. You can keep the rooms natural temperature or you can turn on the heat pump to the temp. you desire. There is a communal hot bath, but our ensuite soaking tub was fine. Yukata and slippers are provided.
Even better than the room were the owners and their children. The father and two sons are the chefs, while the mother and daughter in-law work reception, do the books, serve the meals and answer all your questions. Although the family had limited English, they made a great effort to explain every dish during dinner. They made us feel welcomed and appreciated.
And the meals were delicious. We had two breakfasts and two amazing dinners which included sashimi, chawanmushi, soup, individual hot pots with different ingredients and dipping sauces, crab legs one night, matsutake
broth, mountain potatoes and pureed turnips, vegetables, pickles and much more. The combination of flavors was exquisite and the dishes were a delight to the eyes.
The ambience of the Noren Yado Meigetsu (rising moon) ryokan made our two-day stay in Tsuwano even more memorable. To be truthful, I'm not a slipper person. I'd rather go around barefoot or just in socks. The slippers kept falling off going down the steep stairs.
- Carol (7/5): Good -
