Guest Reviews
- Ilda (4/5): -
- José Santos (5/5): - Senhorio. Limpeza.
- Paulo (10/5): Excelente - A localização é óptima.
No és rellevant.
- Clara (9/5): The hotel is a museum itself.
- Nicky (10/5): Want to see real Evora from centuries before? This is it… - The hotel building is 250 years old. Want to experience a real Evora from years gone by ? this is it. It was an historic family home snd gives a glimpse of a life most of us cant remember or have seen. Don't go for mod cons but go for seeing a world almost forgotten. Easy to find. Central location. Frank the family owner was the ultimate gentleman. It was a hidden gem… but be prepared for museum esq hotel features. Linen on the bed was superior More abundant breakfast
- Stephen (10/5): Time travel in Evora - The proprietor, Francois, was very charming, responsive and helpful. The establishment was a treasure trove of antiques, ideally located in the heart of Evora, a short walk from all the sites. First class bedding linens. Wished we could have stayed longer. It was like stepping back in time.
- Liliana (7/5): will recomend it - the person who takes care of the hotel. he is a very sweet and kind person.
- Don (10/5): Exceptional -
- Betsy (10/5): Great casa in Evora - Great location!
The owner, an older gentleman, will greet you and tell you a few things about the family Casa, he was a definite highlight! It’s located smack dab in the middle of where you want to be and its location was perfect for us.
20 minute walk to the train station and all downhill from the casa.
Bone chapel is a ten minute walk.
The whole experience was amazing, highly recommend this lovely casa with it’s lovely owner! Breakfast is minimal but certainly not a deal breaker!
Also, cleaning could be better.
- Miyako (9/5): Superb -
- Kelly (8/5): Very good -
- Leanne (10/5): Excellent location, amazing historic property, great breakfast - From the moment we walked into the foyer of this 400 year old home we knew that we were going to enjoy a really authentic experience. Our room was spacious and clean, the bathroom was supplied with all amenities. It was a very short stroll to the historic main plaza with restaurants and shops. Our breakfast was included in the tariff and was served in a dining room with a huge chandelier hanging from the ceiling. What an amazing property. The host was friendly and charming. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Nothing
- Elsa (10/5): Exceptional - Sr. Francisco was great. He spoke great English. Very helpful with maps and recommendations. The room was wonderful. A lot of character, very big, plenty of room. AC worked fine. The breakfast was coffee, juice, bread, pasties, ham, cheese had fresh fruit. Location was amazing. We walked every where. The bed wasn’t to our liking but it was fine for 2 nights.
No tv for those who like to watch tv in their room.
- Francoi (9/5): Stay in a historical buildint - Such a lot of history. Wish we had more time to probe the owner on the building and the history around it. One must accept the property is old and so is the bath shower.
- Jeremy (8/5): The owner and grandson were lovely and very helpful!! - A unique experience staying in a really old historical apartment! Everything about the property was beautiful, except the bed ! A very old uncomfortable bed ! The air conditioner leaked a lot of water (1L) on to the floor with a constant dripping all night
- Nicole (5/5): Passable -
- Darlene (7/5): Good -
- Matheus (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lynn (5/5): Old house is kind of cool, but it smells bad. - The location was good. We didn’t have to drive anywhere. It is very old and smells that way. The room was not very clean, especially the bathroom.
- Brenda (8/5): Very good - Nice host, unique property in city center
- Devus (9/5): The Grand Tour and the House of St James. - I liked the 18th century ambiance, which was very much to my taste. The apartments are something one might have expected to have encountered on the Grand Tour, and the fact they have not been redecorated, or furnished since the house was built adds to their charm.
That the Sedan chair and suit of armour, greeting one in the entrance hall, are part of the house's original furnishings, and not being a self conscious addition to recreate an artificial ambience, are a simple delight.
The furnishings are antique and original and I felt decidedly at home on the one night I spent there. The patron was a perfect host. A local patrician of the old school. Breakfast was simple and unpretentious.
It is the sort of establishment I had thought had gone by the wayside some generations before and so was more than delighted for the experience. There was a distinct aroma emanating from the bathroom. A sort of deathly smell I will charitably attribute to the drains. To combat this I obtained incense from a shop in the town, and I sought out a set of slim ecclesiastical wax candles, for the two Florentine lamps with which the rooms are equipped.
There is adequate electricity and efficient modern heating which was welcome on an early March night, so the lamps are purely decorative, but I thought their utility to be essential under the circumstances, for aesthetic reasons if nothing more..
The walls and ceiling are old and decorated with simple classical motives, and being original are not outwardly as clean as many might desire, but in such circumstances one must make allowances.
With night a distinctly Gothic ambience descends, and I could not quite put the plight of Jonathan Harker out of mind, though I must stress, no harm came to me. The experience being no doubt due to the flickering candle light and the terrific thunderstorm that woke me up in the middle of the night. Right on que, one might say.
- Darrell (8/5): We loved our visit to this historic stay and our host was exceptional! - We loved the place and our Host, Frank was outstanding. If you are looking for the Ritz, Casa de S. Tiago is not for you. However, if you are into history and old world charm it is perfect! It is a 16th century building that was updated in what looks to be to 60's or 70's. It is still a museum of antiques, art and history (the place is replete with 15/16th century paintings and comes with its own suit of armour!) all wondrously enhanced by Frank, your pleasant and friendly host! The location within 100m of all the main attractions, the Roman ruins and the Cathedral, was fantastic! The beds were a bit hard and the furnishings a bit basic. But, the historical ambiance more than ade up for the firm beds. As well, with a coat of paint the place would be significantly improved.
- Torsten (1/5): Clised - we had to pay. We booked another place - The place was closed - we dit not get hold of the owner We had to pay, even if it was closed
- Fabio (9/5): Ancient house in the center of Evora - amazing place, very interesting owner
- Denise (9/5): Exactly as we had hoped for after a long day of travel . - The breakfast was fine with fresh squeezed juice and yummy bread. The host was there if we needed anything and was pleasant. He gave us plenty of hot coffee. No issues, satisfied with all. There was a horrific rain and wind storm brining in a small leak, by the window and the host was there immediately to wipe things up.
- Maureen (7/5): pleasant - central location difficult access by car and lots of stairs difficult with heavy suitcases
- Larry (10/5): Exceptional -
- Patricia (10/5): We felt as though we had traveled back in time…(but with none of the discomforts of an earlier era) - This stately home, more than 500 years old, was right in the center of the old city—we could walk everywhere. The home itself was filled with antiques (a suit of armor, a lady’s palanquin), with vaulted ceilings and inlaid stone floors. However, it had been modernized where it counted: new windows, bathroom fixtures, A/C.
- Linda (7/5): If you love old places, this is for you. - This hotel is in a great location. This part of Evora is surprisingly easy to navigate, and is full of good restaurants, historic sites, and good shopping. It was interesting to stay in such an old building surrounded by beautiful old furniture and furnishings. I believe the owner said this home has been a small hotel for 25 years. I don’t think it has been upgraded in that time. The room was too cramped for two friends travelling together, and the breakfast was barely adequate.
- Lodewijk (9/5): Feel like you’re back in the past by staying in this charming mansion - This is an ancient mansion in the middle of the old town. The old and charming proprietor seems to run it single-handedly. There are just 3 or 4 rooms but you will feel you are truly back in the past.
Reaching it by car is a chore but the house has a small parking garage. A big car can park in the street. Nothing
- Vanessa (7/5): Good -
- Qatia (7/5): An historic location in Evora - The house is located at the center of Evora, very close to city main attractions and facilities. Don Francisco is a nice host, an old stile gentleman. We booked two rooms, each one with its bathroom.Main room had a large lobby and everywhere memorabilia are displayed. Air conditioning and wi-fi fully working. Being an historic house there is no elevator, while climbing the stairs you can say hello to Jeronimo in his armor. Breakfast is basic, but vary and quite good, especially jam and fresh coffee. Toll-parking is available just down the street. Despite rooms are cleaned every day, we found some trace of previous guests. Nothing unbearable, in fact we didn't tell the host. As suggestion, the availability of an hairdryer could improve guest's comfort.
- Sophie (8/5): Characterful, comfortable stay in the heart of historic Evora. - Characterful home belonging to the hotel owner, who is charming and very helpful. Amazing location in the historic centre. Spacious, comfortable room with buckets of character.
- Susie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Elizabeth (10/5): Exceptional - The host was excellent. He was very friendly and courteous. The location was close to everything and th3 side had so much character!
- Sarah (2/5): We feel awful leaving a negative review but hopefully the host will read this and improve where possible. - Property very centrally located within the city walls. The main square was just minutes away on foot, as we’re all the other main attractions. The room had a musty smell and could not be aired out because the window wasn’t screened (flies). The room was cold at night (May) and no extra blankets were provided. The beds could have been better but at this price point, this level of quality is to be expected. Although there was a stand-alone heater, we were not shown how to operate it and were not about to start fiddling with it in the middle of the night so all to say we were exhausted the next day. Host was a nice man but he told us upon arrival that we had to be out by 10 am the next day because he had an appointment. He also made us commit to a breakfast time. Breakfast was passable. We should have been more assertive I suppose but I’m not sure it would have helped.
- Peter (10/5): This was the second time we stayed here, and felt right at home. - Superb location in a lovely historic building. Very large room with good bathroom. Simple but sufficient breakfast
- Peter (9/5): e we returned to this accommodation later in our travels and will certainly stay there again if we have the opportunity. - The central location of this wonderful historic house was perfect for us - we could walk everywhere. The room with its ensuite bathroom was large and very comfortable; our host was very welcoming. The breakfast was, for us, simple and sufficient.
- Mark (10/5): Fantastic place to stay in beautiful Evora - Fantastic location, amazing character & history, lovely host Nothing
- Birchmeier (10/5): This hotel is a must see, the rooms are filled with historic items and the art work is beautiful. - The suite of rooms were so authentic of mediaeval Europe. There was even a cannon in our room! The art work was amazing. The host was so friendly, provided information on the 450 year old building, our surroundings, provided suggestions on restaurants. Breakfast was provided and was good. The location is excellent. All of the sites we wanted to visit was just a 5-10 minute walk away. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone staying in the Historic district. Parking was a little expensive and hard to find, we did have to remember to "feed the meter".
- Alan (8/5): Very good -
- Bruno (7/5): Good -
- Michèle (10/5): Exceptional - The host is a wonderful man. He likes to share with his guests. We were very interested in his life story. And the history of his beautiful house. We experienced something very special, a journey in the history of Portugal. The house is located in the historical centre of Evora. We can walk to all the interesting sites. We had a lovely time. A pure delight.
- Paul (8/5): Fascinating hotel/house in great location and a charming host. - The hotel was an old house which made it very special. No reception but the owner was brilliant. At the top of the concrete steps inside the hotel/house was a full set of armour. Not what you would usually expect but unique. The hotel owner was terrific and offered loads of advice. Even allowed us to park our car in his garage (at a cost!) Breakfast was limited but OK.
- Borisav (10/5): Very comfortable and pleasant. Exelent position - Beautiful XVI century villa in a very old center of Evora. Particolary pleasant staying. Very kind and friendly owner.
- David (8/5): Very old structure that has historic significance. Not something for those looking for modern conven - Frank was a great and welcoming host.
- Hans (8/5): Very friendly host. Breakfast very basic. - This is a beautiful 16th century building, stunning, but it comes with amenities that could use updating. Even so a very comfortable place to stay in the middle of the old city.
