Guest Reviews
- May (1/5): The worst hotel stay of my life. - Nothing This was unequivocally the worst hotel stay of my life. Had we been able to leave and go elsewhere we would have done so, had there been a single member of staff available at reception this morning, I would have demanded a refund on the spot. Because the premises were entirely deserted, I am forced to put this in writing.
My partner, her friend, and I booked a stay at the Lion and Lamb to rest after an exhausting, early-morning hike up Scafell Pike. As a designated B&B catering to local walkers, the absolute bare minimum we expected was a hot meal and a decent night’s sleep. We received neither. Instead, we were subjected to a chaotic, unsafe, and utterly miserable environment.
The issues began the moment we arrived. We were advised that if we wanted to eat on the premises, we would need to dine early because they were catering for a private party later that evening. Taking this advice, we arrived for dinner at approximately 6:30 PM, only to be told there were no tables available and that we would have to sit outside.
While sitting outside trying to decide on our food and drink orders, the situation rapidly deteriorated:
Intolerable Noise: The music from the party was being blasted at a volume so extreme we literally could not hear one another speak.
Harassment: In the brief span of a few minutes, our table was approached on three separate occasions by heavily intoxicated individuals.
Violence: I went to the bar to place our order, but before I could even walk back to our table, a violent fight broke out right in front of us, culminating in a young man slapping his girlfriend.
Appalled by the lack of security, control, and basic safety, we decided enough was enough. We abandoned our plans and left the premises entirely just to find a safe place to eat.
When we returned at around 8:30 PM, hoping to get some sleep, the music was so loud the walls and floors in our rooms were vibrating.
We had no sleep until gone midnight, I would never go here again.
- Hugh Purvis (7/5): Basic and not cheap - Evening meals in the pub were very generous portions and service was friendly Breakfast was a fairly basic serve-yourself choice of cereals, yoghurt, toast and jam and coffee
Bed was very firm! Price was clearly determined by Sellafield workers on expenses!
- David Morrison (8/5): -
- Muralidharan (10/5): -
- mark (10/5): Was visiting my son who is currently working in the area and lives next door to the pub so it was ideal for me and my wi - Ideal for visiting my son who is currently living next door You have to park over the road it’s a free car park as the pub doesn’t have one however it wasn’t really a problem.
- SaadB789 (5/5): - Quick booking, clean room, very comfortable The loud music and base till 12am.
- Jack (7/5): -
- Graham (7/5): 3 night stay that was okay - Bed was comfortable.
Bedroom was compact but comfortable and provided all required.
Simple but efficient continental breakfast arrangements. Noise travelled from the bar downstairs and adjacent rooms. Did go quiet though at pub finishing time.
Had 3 evening meals and all average quality.

- Ukkinniveettil Latheef (10/5): Felt welcomed - Staff were friendly and atmosphere was fun and welcoming. Room was comfy and clean. All the amenities were provided in the room. Breakfast had different choices and calm environment.
- Martin (7/5): Nice pub, great food - The staff were great, the food was excellent, location ideal for Seascale The pub was a bit noisy, but it was Friday night so used ear plugs to help sleep
- duncan (6/5): - Continental breakfast was pretty awful
- Aaron5124 (1/5): Overpriced and loud - Lovely location very clean comfy beds Well overpriced for what it actually is, unfortunately, it was karaoke night till 11 pm so we didn't get much sleep. As it felt like I was sleeping inside the speakers down stairs
- Sandra (6/5): -
- Keith (9/5): Great stay - Pub food
- Grzegorz (6/5): - Location and the room Breakfast was poor and the table not very clean
- Sushma (6/5): Location is good but the kitchen should be more convenient - Nice location the pub was good I waited for 55minutes to serve the food
- Andrew (10/5): I'll be up this way in 2027, hope I can get a room - Almost everything was spot on, especially the ladies behind the bar in helping me with getting a taxi to muncaster mid Sunday bank holiday. Really grateful for their efforts.
Bountiful breakfast was a godsend too. Late night Karaoke went on longer than expected.
- Deborah Ann Marie (6/5): Not what we expected but adequate.1 - The friendly staff. The comfort and low noise level. The breakfast was self service, although plenty to choose from, there was only enough cutlery for one couple. If more guests had been eating at the same moment, it would raise issues. Also weren't sure if we were expected to wash our dishes.
- Paul (8/5): Very good. It was an emergency stop over. -
- Sebastian (10/5): -
- Samuel (10/5): - Clean reasonably priced accommodation.
- Philip (7/5): Satisfactory - We were extremely disappointed with the breakfast as it is advertised as breakfast included and we assumed it was a cooked breakfast only to find it was a continental breakfast. I feel this needs to be stated. Breakfast could have been better
- Darren (9/5): -
- Daniel (8/5): Very good -
- Jackie (5/5): Passable -
- Carol (8/5): Very good -
- Fraser (8/5): Great service & helpful move to Kellbank ! - We had booked a nights stay before doing the C2C bike ride. The team at the Lion realised this and contacted me prior to arrival as they had a party/ band at the lion which might impact our stay. We were offered rooms at their sister hotel the Kellbank and our group moved there. We had a nice meal & peaceful, good nights sleep and a great stay at the Kellbank. Great customer service to notice our needs and move the group without fuss. The Kellbank was perfect for our stay and will book there again next year.
- Neil (8/5): Very good -
- Robert (8/5): Very good -
- Michelle (10/5): Exceptional -
- Stuart (4/5): - Good location, nice staff but awful room...no window, just a skylight. Way below par.
- Jean (8/5): Very good -
- Lesley (8/5): Very good - Convenient for travel home on main road
- Allison (8/5): Very good - Very clean No window in room only a skylight

- Peter (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lee (7/5): Good - Friendly staff. Disappointed about the Breakfast situation.
- Graham (10/5): Highly recommended - Set in a beautiful village this accomodation stands out withbits exterior decor. Parking is a short walk away and not onsite but this isnt gar and not a problem. We were greeted by a wonderful ladybwhonwas full of smiles, verybfriendly and appeared tonreally enjoy her job. She showed us to our room and left us to unpack. The room was big enougb fornthe 2 of us and had a good sized ensuite shower room. The rooms facilities were excellent. Smart tv, wifif and smart heating as well as a kettle and hair dryer. The hotel is small, just 14 rooms and also serves as one of just 2 pubs in the village. The pub itself is large, has pool amd darts as well as space for live entertainment. Multiple tvs line the walls and theres music too. Theres also a verybgood oitside space to the rear as well as a small area to tje front if you prefer to watchblife go by. Theres a great menu with a variety of foods available including a thai menu. Food and drink prices are good and theres ample choice. We had a lovely stay and are already planning to return. I require medical equipment at night and there was no issue with this either. Pricing for the accommodation is also reasonable. Definitely recommend
- Simon (8/5): Weekend away. - No parking on site and not a very good breakfast 😒
- John (8/5): Short relaxing trip with plenty to see and do - Good all round accommodation central for days out and handy bar restaurant for night times
- Stephen (5/5): Clean friendly and basic - Location A bit hostel like and noisy extractor fan that made the room shake. There’s nothing really wrong with the place it’s just you expect traditional pub / accommodation but it isn’t
- Kevin (9/5): Superb - Staff were lovely, helpful
- Mandy (9/5): Country charm - The staff very friendly and helpfull Unfortunatly my fish and chips was not nice 80% batter 20% fish dissapointing to say the least pity. rest was amazing
- Chris (10/5): - Excellent all round
- Steve (9/5): Comfortable - Staff friendly room very clean, Breakfast was basic but sufficient for us
- Andrew (8/5): Lovely stay - Location, the food, the staff, the room. Loud music from the bar area which kept me awake, but it's a sports bar, so it's expected.
Other travellers that slam their bedroom doors at 4am in the morning, which disturbed my sleep.
On arrival the room was cold, took 20 minutes to warm up, but, make sure you scan the barcode in the room to activate the heating.
- Andrew (10/5): Lovely stay - The room, the pub/sports bar area & the food. The staff were lovely and very helpful. Loud music from downstairs which travels up into my room from the disused chimney breast.
But it's a pub/sports bar for locals, it's expected it was all quiet by 10.30pm.
Also, other travellers that slam the door shut when leaving at 4am in the morning, which woke me up and is very inconsiderate.
- Peter (9/5): Superb - Very clean breakfast good evening meal good value
- Thomas (10/5): Exceptional -
- Katharine (7/5): Good - Close to the seaside and to get to Scafell pike. Room was clean and a decent size. Easy controls for the heating. Breakfast was a surprise bonus! It’s obviously a pub so was a bit noisy - to be expected on a weekend though!
- Daniel (8/5): Very good - Comfy bed, great shower, and decent food. Paper thin walls, lack of breakfast options, and the coffee.
- Christian (8/5): Very good -
- Jean (7/5): Overall the staff were brilliant . Food awesome 🤩 would stay again - Absolutely brilliant lots of choice and enjoyed it The walls were too thin heard the next door room woke us up early hour very nosy aguring and then they had sex very loudly and also the ending lol 😂 bed was abit to small sadly
- Samantha (5/5): Central location to stay if you going onto somewhere else or if you want somewhere to stay if looking to climb scaffel - It was a last minute booking, the room was clean and it was comfortable The parking was in a public car park over the road, the music is loud but it is a pub so cannot expect it to not have noise and it was peaceful once that closed. Our room was however right above where people stand and smoke outside but was too warm and room was small so it got stuffy so we couldn’t close the window.
The breakfast was poor, the tables were not clean and there was no staff about m, the coffee machine was broken, there was only a choice of cereal, fresh fruit and bread which was all help yourself.
I think it should state clearly what your getting for breakfast as I’ve never had breakfast included that consisted of just cereal, fruit and bread, even continental I thought there be some ham or cheese and some pastries,
The dishes were piled high in the sink from other guests as mentioned no staff around.
We had to get our own coffee from upstairs to make ourselves a cuppa and I felt like it was more a self catering or old hostel type system that I remember from years ago on school trips.
Nothing to do with the hotel but just incase…. The local convenience store was burnt down a few weeks back we were told by a local resident outside when we were walking round looking for a shop so we had to get in the car and drive to seascale town a few miles down the road to a coop store and bought some stuff there.
- Reem (9/5): Superb -
- Lawrence (8/5): Very good -
- Gaynor (7/5): Good -
- Dean (4/5): Disappointing - Room was clean with good shower Never been to a hotel with a kitchen that doesn't serve breakfast. Local shop unfortunately burnt down recently so drove to shop in Seascale.
Wifi never worked even when supplied with correct code
Inedible evening meal - never had a fish I couldn't cut with a knife before - dealt with very poorly by staff.
- Eva (4/5): Disappointing -
- Mistyoos (8/5): Very good -
- Michael (10/5): Exceptional -
- Michael (10/5): Exceptional -
- Dunn (7/5): Good - Was able to book last minute on the day. Late check-in. Close to festival site (Muncaster Castle.) Free access to Prime. No window in the small double room so it was a bit stuffy. The patriotic bunting and mural of the queen outside put me off a bit. It all felt a bit right wing and little Englander. The village is a bit strange
- Jörg (8/5): Very good - Very helpful stuff. We had a very pleasant stay
- Peter1978j2 (8/5): Very good - Nice pub and good location for visiting west lakes. Dog friendly.
- Chloe (8/5): Very good - The lady rang before we were due to arrive to let us know of a local road closure which was really helpful.
Generally good room for the price.
- Michael (10/5): Exceptional -
- One (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ruth (10/5): Outstanding value. - Exceptionally clean. Appears to be recently refurbished. Good selection of sockets in the room for charging appliances. A frame to put my suitcase on in the room would have been helpful.
- Patricia (7/5): Good -
- Michael (10/5): Exceptional -
- Alan (8/5): Comfy bed - Nice people Nothing I did not like
- Richard (8/5): Great value, very clean, great location, friendly staff - Reallý good value for money in excellent location as base to climb Scafell Pike N/A
- Derek (3/5): Good location and inexpensive option. You pay for what you get. Don’t expect too much. - Location and inexpensive A plug socket didn’t work
Carpet dirty
Sound proofing not good
No wardrobes or to hang clothes
Poor breakfast on offer, not really worth it. I didn’t bother to buy
- Ashley (10/5): Exceptional -
- Bamber (5/5): It was ok - It was ok clean and tidy Noisy as could hear everything around you found the bathroom small and the shower tiny pillows where flat and room was very hot.
- Michael (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sws-1961 (6/5): Pleasant - Location, clean Breakfast Voucher, tiny room, food
- Mr (8/5): Very good -
- Sue (9/5): They treated me very well, nothing too much trouble. Very helpful staff and I enjoyed my stay! - Perfect location
- Kerry (10/5): Comfortable, friendly and a perfect location. - It had everything you would need. In a perfect spot for a base whilst exploring the Lakes. The staff were so friendly and looked after you so well.
Thank you to all.
- Peter (8/5): Very good -
- Paul (10/5): Exceptional - Excellent, clean, friendly staff.
- Jean (7/5): Only there for a quick sleep pre C2C bike ride so certainly served it’s purpose for that - Very accommodating to a group of cyclists allowing us to store bikes in our rooms No quiet are in the bar, tvs and music made it difficult to talk
- Jack (10/5): Clean, tidy and good value for money. - Property was in a great location, room was clean and tidy, staff were welcoming.
- Stephen (7/5): Good - The room was clean and the bed comfortable. It was a good base location for exploring the Western & Central Lake District. The breakfast arrangements were bizarre, comprising a voucher for a hot drink and a breakfast bap from the local convenience store. That said, it was very tasty! We had booked what was supposed to be a standard double, but I suspect that we ended up in a small double. The room was cramped with little space to store clothes or move around. I think that this venue is more suited as for the overnight work traveler rather than a leisure traveler
- Peter (8/5): Very good -
- Robert (8/5): Great location for a short stay - Checked in early and staff are very friendly No window and hard to open the Velux window
- Jillian (8/5): Adequate stay but other hotels available. - Location excellent. Room comfortable. Food in bar good value and tasty. Free parking. Heating on QR code not ideal. Breakfast poor. Having to collect from shop up road and a breakfast barm is not really a breakfast. Not allowed to have orange juice or water instead of a coffee. Room we stayed in number 1 was quite noisy from 6am not sure if it was cleaning staff or other residents. Hairdryer attached to drawer so unable to dry hair properly. Not enough hanging or drawer space. We stayed 3 nights and no room for everything.
- Alex (10/5): Exceptional - Everything. Love gosforth. Would happily move here. Nothing.
- Butler-underwood (6/5): The basics of a some really good accommodation but some attention needed - The food served in the evening was very good. The location was ideal for climbing Scafell Pike. Nice to have hot chocolate sachets and biscoff biscuits as well as your standard tea and coffee. The shower cubicle in the ensuite needed some attention to detail as wasn't particularly clean. The mugs had coffee marks on them and clearly had only been rinsed out in the sink and not washed properly. Room itself was satisfactory but lots of cobwebs around and edges of carpet were very dusty.
