Guest Reviews
- Jennifer (10/5): - A lovely, well-equipped room with a luxury feel.
- Theeranutpol (6/5): - Easy and comfortable. Bathroom needs better venting.
- Marian (10/5): - Loved the location and opportunity to walk and explore.
- J (6/5): - Not the nicest room felt like an American motel room and the train noise meant I didn’t sleep shame as the pub part and setting looked fabulous
Great if you want a lovely country pub but won’t be staying there again
Breakfast was ok but nothing special either just not my cup of tea
- Joe (10/5): - Very happy with my one night stay at Barton's Mill. Absolutely nothing negative to say.
- Stephen (8/5): - Great location and i would use again. Pub is good for feed and beer. You can hear the train line from the rooms, it's not so bad but disturbed me.
- Peter (10/5): Quiet and spacious - Lovely room fitted with everything you need, quiet and comfortable. Spacious and modern
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Good standard all round
- Phil (10/5): An all round pleasant stay :-). Well done! - Very pleasantly located near rural walks along the river and duck ponds. The quality of the food was very good with a good few choices from the standard and gluten free menus.
Helpful staff and nice atmosphere whether you are inside and outside dinning.
Rooms are very clean and modern with a few nice touches.
- Barbara (10/5): - Barton’s Mill was a fantastic find. Very friendly staff. Fabulous breakfast. We liked the fact the rooms were separate from the pub and easily accessible. Situated in a beautiful area. Easy access to M3. Would definitely recommend.
- Martin (10/5): Wonderful stay for couple with dog - Great place to stay with good food options. Most of all plenty of walks on the local green spaces especially for dogs. Really enjoyed it and so easily accessible from the M3 and easy reach to London the following morning.
- Clare (10/5): Fantastic - Absolutely amazing place to stay, loved every minute of being there and will definitely be back for future business trips
- Andrew (10/5): - Beautiful location
- Christopher (8/5): - Very clean and spacious rooms. Good breakfast. Didn’t have dinner but the restaurant looked inviting and the old mill mechanism was very interesting. The pebbles on the pathway leading to the bedrooms made wheeling suitcases difficult but we got help from a staff member who carried them to our car.
- Christopher (10/5): - Enjoyable food and ambiance. Pleasant location by river and interesting artifacts connected to the old mill. Quiet location for overnight accommodation away from the main building. Only slight problem was the pebbled area which made wheeling luggage a bit difficult.
- john (8/5): - Loverly location a bit dissappointed with our evening meal
- Melanie (10/5): - We had one night here after attending the iFly experience nearby.
The rooms were clean, well equipped and good comfy bed. There was plenty of storage and hooks by the door (never understand why some hotels don’t put hooks for coats etc) so this was a huge bonus.
We ate in the pub, which we enjoyed. Was lovely to sit in the sunshine enjoying a drink and but needing to go to far.
We did have a walk around the area, would highly recommend doing this if you get chance.
Would definitely return.
- Antoinette (10/5): Overnight stay - Highly recommend this spot. Very clean and comfortable. Fantastic breakfast too. Staff super nice too. Well done !
- merlyn (10/5): Bartons mill - The room.was spacious and comfortable. Plenty of parking and the pub is great. We had a little food in the evening and the breakfast included set us up.

- sean (10/5): Woukd we stay again - A BIG yes - A goid nights stay in a decent size room that was not only comfortable but spotless. All the touches one woukd exoect from a much more expensive accommodation. Breakfast and staff were excellent
- Thomas (10/5): - Booked for rooms for family attending a wedding. Food was great as was service.rooms were very good and all as a private courtyard away from pub and restaurant. Good value for money, definitely ticked all our boxes.
- Anthony (10/5): Barton mill - Barton Mill was a very nice and welcoming pub with our room spacious and a lovely shower room. Certainly something that would suit a wheel chair user. Pleasant helpful staff. Will visit again
- Emma (10/5): Clean, spacious, lovely setting, great breakfast - The rooms were incredibly spacious and clean and the breakfast was excellent. Would highly recommend!
- Vicki (4/5): Uncomfortable and unfriendly - Staff not welcoming or helpful in the bar (the reception) so first impression not great. The room was unbearable (heat) even with the noisy portable AC. I had to hunt this down. No soap or face clothes in the bathroom to wash hands - I had to go into the shower to get soap. Just not pleasant. Cleaning staff were very friendly. A saving grace!
- Robert (8/5): Disabled stay - The room was excellent
Staff helpful
Food average
Parking good
- Lisa (10/5): Beautiful Barton's Mill - We stayed at Barton's Mill for two nights. Plentiful parking, room was lovely and clean and the bed was comfy too. Complimentary tea, coffee, biscuits, shampoo, conditioner etc. We had a couple of lovely meals in the pub and the breakfast was fab too. The staff were lovely and welcoming. We liked the check out at 11 so we didn't feel the need to rush. We would definitely recommend staying here. A beautiful spot next to the river with lovely walks.
- Susan (10/5): - We enjoyed the whole experience and would recommend it.The Food is good and the staff are friendly and helpful.

Room - great space, tastefully furnished, great size bathroom with excellent shower.
Breakfast - fantastic choice, cooked to perfection.
Pub - great pub which was busy, with a spacious beer garden
Staff - everybody was friendly and accommodating. The guy managing breakfast was really good and welcoming.
Overall - Barton’s Mill clearly a well managed and has a great atmosphere. The owner clearly does not cut corners and provides great value and focuses on customer needs and experience.
Thanks for the stay, we fully intend to return.
- Darren (10/5): - Great food very quiet good service !!
- Henry (10/5): - We had a fabulous weekend at Barton's Mill. The accommodation was excellent, plenty of walking trails around the property, staff were brilliant and the food was excellent.
- Nigel (8/5): - Good and spacious accommodation for overnight stays. A good welcome and friendly service. Excellent food and caters for gluten free.
- David (10/5): - It would be a great improvement to have better signage from the carpark at the rear of the accomodation building to the rooms at the front of the building. ie rooms 1- (14?) It is particularly difficult to locate rooms 1-(14?) if arriving for the first time when it is dark.
- Paul (10/5): - A really enjoyable overnight stay. We needed to switch off and relax and this was the perfect place. A warm welcome, great food and a really comfortable room. Just a few minutes off the M3. We will definitely
return.
- Richard (6/5): - Stayed for a business trip.. its ok, perfectly adequate
- Kate (4/5): Not suitable for business travel - Arrived late and staff were chatting together and I wasnt noticed! Breakfast was poor.

Excellent breakfast.
- Ingo (10/5): - Very nice location and lovely stuff
- Shaun (10/5): - Loved the peace and tranquillity of this old pub. It’s gardens are fantastic with lots of space and ample tables and chairs. Beautiful crystal clear stream running along side the property.
The staff were great and the food is far better than your average pub.
The rooms are excellent and spacious for a very comfortable stay.
Definitely recommend this place to everyone.
- Lynette (10/5): Good stay. - Staff welcoming and efficient. Room very clean and comfortable. Breakfast good. Check-in/ out easy.
- Chris (10/5): - What a very friendly and helpful place to stay! They made us feel very welcome. Extremely dog friendly! Our dog, Archie, also enjoyed his stay being spoilt rotten by the girls at breakfast time! When we have to return to the area again, this will be our first choice! Thank you to Colum and all the staff! 😊
- Kat (10/5): - Fabulous stay. Clean room with all amenities, quiet, near the pub with wonderful food and next to a nature reserve and the Basing House barn and ruins. Great walking opportunities in nature and the historical places. Very relaxing three days away.
- Roy (10/5): - Nice, well-equipped room in the modern hotel block with lovely characterful old pub next door for dining and warming by the roaring fire.
- Maritn (8/5): - Great peaceful location yet not that far out of town
- Michael (10/5): Very pleasant overnight stay - A++ - would definitely recommend and happily return.
- Stephen (10/5): - Very good breakfast with quality produce
- Rahul (8/5): - Beautiful place, however, you have to wheel your suitcase into a pub to book in and n my first night, arriving late, hungry and tired, they were fully booked inside, so I had to eat outside in the cold
Otherwise, great place
- Miriam (10/5): - We had a wonderful time. Thank you!
- Martyn (10/5): - Great location, friendly and professional staff. Would recommend to anyone who wants to stay in the Basingstoke area. Excellent food for evening meal and great breakfast choice, cooked fresh to order if hot food is ordered.
- Lisa (10/5): Fabulous - Perfect!
- Jenny (10/5): Fabulous rooms - Rooms were really lovely and spacious. Very comfy big bed, sofa, desk, everything you need.
Busy pub and nice walk along river to the Basing barn and house. Would definitely stay again.
- Martyn (10/5): Superb hotel - As always, great stay with friendly staff, nice rooms, good food and great convenient location.
- Stephen (10/5): - Spotless comfortable room, tasty breakfast
- Jane (10/5): Great accessible accommodation - Very comfortable large room, booked for wheelchair accessibility and exceeded expectations. Good parking, access to room, large luxury accessible bathroom. Fitted to a high standard and even had pretty, accessible level footpaths along the river to take an evening walk. Food was good pub food and very nice breakfast options. Efficient and friendly table service.
- Andy (8/5): Barton Mill - Very lovely quiet comfortable rooms in a converted barn complex. Nice on suite shower room, would stay again if in the area
- Matt (10/5): - Great place to stay. Rooms are big, clean and very big beds. Always stay here when in the area for work
- Martyn (10/5): Bartons Mill review 24/03/2022 - Really nice stay as always. Great room and quiet location. Excellent service and great breakfast. Front of house staff (Iwona) on breakfast shift, friendly, helpful and very professional. Nice to see a familiar face who adds something to the stay with her attitude.
- Brian (8/5): - Clean,comfortable room.Staff most helpful and pleasant.
Only negative - slightly uneven & not very well lit walk from room to the restaurant - could be a problem for a lady in high-heels, or anyone a little unsteady.
- Lisa (10/5): Great little inn with good food and comfy rooms. - We loved this historic 17th century inn. Rooms are a good size and well appointed.
Good in the pub was tasty and reasonably priced. Located right in the middle of a few good dog walks too. I’d go back!
- Tobias (10/5): - Beautiful location, great food, very friendly staff
- Andrew (10/5): Barton's Mill review - Rooms look recently renovated to a very high standard, are very clean and warm. Meals are served from the 17th century character mill / pub providing access to a riverside walk / Old Basing and Basing House. Plenty of on-site free parking.
- wd (10/5): An tucked away unnexpected surprise luxury lodge. - The place itself if full of history, dating back to the english civil war , and doomsday book era. Having the remains of twin water powered mills on site, which fed the kings men during the civil war. The accomodation itself is a stand alone high spec building resembling stables lay out in the shape of a sort of square letter c, this is done to a very high spec, however attention to detail is everything, bearing in mind we have suffered an extended period of covid, we found our electrical plugs out of date by some months this is a safety issue p.a.t test. We struggled to get the plug out of the bath, as it had come off and been left off the bath plug retaining chain. Although to an international standared both fire extinguishers are coloured chrome, i have concern than if a real fire broke out, would some one unsure or in panic mode use a water filled extinguisher on an electrical fire !. Thier is a rail line very close by and you can here the trains going passed in your room. Thier are plusses the condaments are to a high standared, the internal decor is to a high standared, the bathroom is very nice, the breakfast in the old mill is awsome, the host is very knowledgable with the site history.
- Russell (10/5): Well appointed room - The room was very well appointed. A good selection of teas and coffes with a kettle. The room was quite spacious with a large en-suite with a bath and shower and there was plenty of hot water.
I didn't try the breakfast so cant comment on that. There was a slight runble of the trains in the background but it wasn't too loud to bother me. I felt the room could have done with a clock, maybe an alarm clock otherwise I would recommend without hesitation.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good value. - Room was excellent however 2 lights were not working, one with no bulb in it. Table was not set for breakfast but ws soon dealt with. Breakfast was not hot enough and served on cold plates, however the beans and egg were hot.
- C (10/5): Good - will stay again. - Lovely room - plenty of milk for tea, good shower and warm. Food was fine but might want to expand menu as no pasta, curry or noodle options.
- Verified traveler (6/5): No happy with food - the room was really nice. Staff friendly but unfortunately the food was not. Nothing was really hot plates were cold and the full english breakfast the same. Half a piece of bacon not really what you would expect The evening meal was luke warm again and they had ran out of 2 things by 7pm. Could have been a lot better food wise.
- Ann (8/5): Super stay in perfect location. - Super room, tea & coffee, biscuits & a lovely collection of toiletries provided.
The bed was a little too hard and pillows very soft.Could do with a mattress topper and new pillow collection.
Our evening meal & breakfasts were very good.
Evening Staff we’re very good and welcoming and our breakfast waitress was excellent as was the cleaner who checked our rooms had been satisfactory.
Ray the manager telephoned as promised to confirm my queries. So our stay was excellent.
- Eilish (10/5): Hotel in a lovely spot - Hotel in a lovely spot, great sized room, pud adjoining great atmosphere, and good food
- Paul (10/5): - Excellent facilities next door to pub and restaurant.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We loved it here! What a hidden gem. Modern, clean rooms in a secluded pub garden setting with a little stream.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Lovely - Cracking little place. Would happily stay here again
- Michael (10/5): Spacious rooms excellent staff and food. - Stayed here before, very spacious rooms, excellent staff and very good food. Having a separate gluten free menu also great for me.
Booked again in a couple of weeks.
- Daniel (10/5): Excellent - Friendly Service, comfortable rooms, great food and beer.
- Steven (8/5): Great room, good food, limited menu - Room was far better than expected. Barton Mill used to have excellent food but the menu was limited during the trip (June 21). Wasn't keen on seeing the owner (?) bring a dog in to the bar area, right up to the kitchen door.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great, will be back
- Helen (8/5): - Amazing location, beautiful room only spoilt by self important "manager" who did not priorise our check in and had fo be chased up multiple times. In the end a junior staff member
- Darren (10/5): Amazing place with exceptional staff - Amazing place. Such friendly staff, so pet friendly and room was immaculately clean. Superb location for walks along the riverside. Good food and cocktails at pub.
So good we will be returning within weeks!!
- Georgia (8/5): Good nights sleep - Lovely size room! Just a few little things like the shower curtain at the bottom was dirty still water left in kettle and cracked tile in bathroom. The pub itself is set in an ideal spot very peaceful lovely comfortable bed. Would stay again!
- Stephen (8/5): Pleasant stay - Very pretty location but convenient for work on Basingstoke industrial estates. Nice pub restaurant and breakfast, comfy well equiped room. Railway on viaduct above a bit more intrusive for noise in room 1 than it was on my last visit staying in another room. Also wokevearlt due to light- no blackout so worth taking eye shield if sleeping past about 5am this time of year. Would certainly stay again though.
- Barry (10/5): Excellent. - Great service, I was running late and they accommodated me. Pleasantly surprised by the room, extremely well presented and great breakfast in the morning.
- Anthony (10/5): Elkay Stay - Fantastic place, good location, lovely staff and very friendly owners! Breakfast is top notch!
- Jane (10/5): Great little find - Lovely little place. Super friendly attentive staff. Room was spotless, quiet and decorated nicely. You were provided with all the toiletries you could possibly need and there was an extensive choice of different teas and coffees including fresh ground. Continental breakfast was included in the price and worth every penny. We chose cereal, fruit platter, yoghurt, toast and chocolate muffins. There were other options that we could have had. It was laid out ready at a pre arranged time. All covid precautions were in place and adhered to. Felt completely safe.
- Stephen (10/5): Top Marks - A spotless room in a lovely off street location. Bed was very comfortable. The host, Ray was very friendly and chatty.
Large car park and lots of outside space adjoining the stream. A wildlife area is next door.
Would stay there again. Food was generous and good too
- Sally (10/5): - Beautifully decorated clean room, with large comfy bed.
- Lynda (6/5): Pebble paths outside rooms a big problem - We were very happy with the room well designed and a very large room but that’s where it stopped as we were woken up four times in the night as the pathways right outside the rooms are pebbles and not solid paths consequently when walked on makes loads of noise. We were awoken 1.30am, 2 am, 3 am then 3.30 am with other guests going back to their rooms. Next morning we went for breakfast which looked ok until we went to eat it it was Luke warm to cold. We brought All these complaints to the attention of the staff on our departure but not sure it was seriously taken into account. Was not reimbursed in any way. So all in all not a good experience.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - A great location let down by poor cleanliness.
The location, near to Basing House, is excellent. There is immediate access to country walks, and across the way from the rooms is a really nice pub where the breakfast and service is very good.
However...
The room appeared as though it hadn’t been cleaned before we arrived; we asked for that to be sorted out, but the quality of cleaning was poor. After a few days we had to ask for the floor to be vacuumed - not done by default. That was very disappointing and such as shame, because the room was relatively new, and comfortable.
- Colin (10/5): - Rooms are very well designed with thoughtful provisions
Two gripes would be that the tv’s are small, and it was very muddy outside around the pub area
- Frank (10/5): - Very clean comfortable Hotel,friendly staff
- Janice (10/5): Excellent place to stay - Excellent quality room and wonderful breakfast. Lovely, huge, very comfy bed and clean spacious bathroom with excellent shower! Great convenient location.
