Guest Reviews
- Barry (10/5): - Nice hotel which is reasonably close to the airport. Shuttle service (one way) from the hotel to the airport is a bonus. Too bad there's no shuttle from the airport to the hotel. Not sure why.
Dinner at the restaurant was good, and is the only dining option available. We didn't see any restaurants within walking distance.
Our only complaint is that our room was very warm even with the window opened and the thermostat turned OFF. We couldn't understand why, since this is a first floor room. Other than that, we enjoyed our stay.
- sarah (10/5): - Breakfast was excellent!!
- Brenda (10/5): - We ordered dinner and it was delicious! The breakfast options were plentiful.
- Michael (10/5): - Simple accommodations, great breakfast, quiet.
- Bernadette (10/5): Lovely view - Very quaint and clean room. Beautiful view. Shower pressure was wonderful after a long flight. Breakfast was lovely and delicious. Staff was wonderful.
- maria (10/5): - A good place
- Cindy (10/5): - Staff were very welcoming. The location was convenient for our needs.
- Jaclyn (10/5): - Loved this hotel! Was the best they provide complimentary breakfast and they have a coffee/tea machine we can use 24/7! I loved having endless lattes lol. The best thing was my husband is gluten free and one night we arrived back around 6:30pm and didn’t want to go out to eat. We bought food as we bounced hotels and guest houses hoping to cook. after dinner was served the lady let us use the kitchen to cook gluten free pasta! It was very nice of her to allow us to do that. The service here was 10/10 I would definitely stay here again! And the hotel views of the mountains are amazing!
- gary (10/5): - Great location in a lupine feild with waterfalls in view!
- Kristen (10/5): - Self check-in instructions were communicated ahead of time and the process was smooth and convenient. The room was clean, bright and airy. The mini fridge in the room was a nice convenience and the WiFi worked well. The view from our room was fabulous! We had a field of lupine and a small pond that hosted several bird species right outside our window. We could also see snow-capped volcanos and the Seljalandsfoss waterfall in the distance. The breakfast buffet was delicious and the staff was friendly and accommodating. The location is central to Seljalandsfoss (waterfall), Landeyjahofn (ferry dock to Vestmannaeyjar), and the town of Hvolsvollur (food, gas, grocery, shops and the Volcano and Earthquake Lava Center exhibit). Hotel Selja is a hidden gem and I highly recommend staying here!
- David (10/5): - Very nice hotel. It's in a rural area, so not close to any restaurants (15 minute drive away), but they cook a nice dinner upon request. And great breakfast, too. It's well located to visit many waterfalls, Westman islands and parks.
- Youli (8/5): - The hotel is okay, but the location is very isolated
- Eben (10/5): - Great. Enjoyed my stay
- Stephen (10/5): - The hotel stands completely on its own with the hills in the distance along with a waterfall. It was very quiet.
The rooms are simple but comfortable.
The breakfast was good with waffles being a nice surprise.
- Michael (10/5): - Great Stay!!
- Kimberli (10/5): - Hotel Selja sits alone in a vast, flat landscape with stunning views. You'd not think much of it when driving up to it, but once inside, you're greeted by warm staff members and cozy, bright rooms. The rooms were very clean and nicely appointed.
We had a very yummy dinner there served on short notice and received with much gratitude. The breakfast buffet had everything we could want to start our day - it was delicious.
It's a perfect overnight location for catching the early morning ferry out to Heimaey Island. We would stay here again in a heartbeat!
- Kathy (8/5): - Quaint
- Sophie (10/5): - Quiet and clean hotel! We stayed here for a few nights while we explored the golden circle and the southern coast. Perfect midpoint.
- jueun (10/5): - Good location to stop on the way to Vik
- Julia (10/5): - Arrived for my one night stay here, and my key was ready for me at the front desk. Breakfast was delicious (waffles, bacon, eggs, fruits, deli meats/cheese, cereal, etc.). My cat battery actually after I checked out, and the front desk staff lady gave me a jump. Loved my stay here and how homey it felt.
- Eleanor (10/5): - Beautiful views from the room, and quite spacious and clean. Great breakfast included and very friendly staff.
- Ryan (8/5): - This hotel is off the road and quiet from traffic. Have to drive into town for food, only place nearby was the welcome center, had small deli type food.
- Cynthia (10/5): - We stayed one night at Hotel Selja during our South Coast adventure and it was great. The fact that it was relatively close to the locations we wanted to visit was the main reason why we chose it, and of course, the free breakfast was also 👌
- Charles (10/5): - Great spot in a remote area. The front of the property is very unassuming.
The reception was always staffed and check in was quick. Rooms were good. Bathrooms were of an average size, but smaller compared to western hotels. Breakfast was convenient and tasty.
Good spot that I would recommend to travelers.
- michael (10/5): - Appears to be family owned.
New building, with fresh decor.
Breakfast was get especially for such a limited number of rooms.
- Joe Marie (8/5): - clean and nice place to see northern lights
- Marko (10/5): - A welcoming overnight on our road trip. Kind staff and good breakfast!
- Alese (10/5): - I recently stayed at this hotel and had a great experience. The place was modern and very clean, which made for a comfortable stay. Breakfast was good with a nice variety of options, and the staff were helpful and attentive throughout my visit. The hotel was also very quiet, allowing for a peaceful night’s rest. Overall, I highly recommend this hotel for anyone looking for a pleasant and hassle-free stay.
- Jeffrey (10/5): - Grear Stay. Clean and Comfortable. Nice Breakfast and great Location.
- stacy (10/5): - Really great food, we did not prebook dinner(tech mix up) but we got amazing salmon and chicken caesar salads with only a short wait. So worth it!
- Annette (10/5): - Super remote but loved vicinity to other areas without driving hours each time. Very friendly and attentive staff. Very small european style, good breakfast and very clean all around.
- Alba (10/5): - Great people who take care of the environment lace
- David (10/5): - Hotel Selja is a great place to stay on the Southern Coast of Island. The hotel is a small (12 room) facility. The rooms are modern and clean. The breakfast is also quite nice - more than we expected for a small hotel. The location is remote, quiet and beautiful!
- Bianca (10/5): - Excellent choice!
- Erika (8/5): - Overall property was remote. Loved that the staff was super nice and kept the place clean. The breakfast was amazing--the coffee machine, cripsy bacon, scrambled eggs and waffle maker with the pistachio and nutella spread. The room overall was spacious for 2 big luggages. Probably the most room we've had so far in Iceland. Bathroom was big.
Just one thing-- hopefully they keep up with the cleanliness of the sink and shower. There were some mold and rust around the grout of the shower and sink area.
Overall, the place was very cozy and clean.
- Robert (10/5): - Small hotel tucked out of the way. Friendly staff. Not many dining options around. Pre-ordered a salmon Caesar salad. It was excellent. Enjoyed a quiet stay. Had canned and bottled beers for purchase.
- Nida (10/5): - So close to the falls
- Anny (10/5): - The staff are super nice and helpful. We enjoyed dinner on site. Relaxing to have a shower in our room then just step into dining room for our dinner. A view of Seljalandsfoss right from our room.
- Sandy (10/5): - This hotel is in the middle of nowhere, which is part of its charm, but is accessible by car to many wonderful wonders of eastern Iceland. The rooms are modern, clean and comfortable. Breakfast was great- make your own waffles was a nice addition; breads were delicious. I wouldn't hesitate recommending this place and would go back if in the area.
- Kelly (8/5): - This is a very small hotel and is set far back from the main road. It is great if you are looking for a very quiet, secluded Iceland experience. They have a small reception/eating area and offer dinner and a free breakfast. We really enjoyed the breakfast, but did not find items on the menu to suit dietary needs for dinner. The closest town is about 20 minutes away and has a grocery store and a couple of places to eat and shop. The surroundings of this hotel are beautiful. The rooms are standard hotel rooms in size and very modern. We wanted an area to play some games, but there was really nowhere outside of the hotel room itself. The hiking is great and it is near many natural attractions.
- Carl (10/5): - Hotel was nice and clean, staff were very friendly. The breakfast was great. Plenty of parking and easy to get to and close to Seljalandsfoss.
- Rachel (10/5): - Great quiet location very close to Seljalandsfoss. The surroundings are beautiful with wildflowers and a few of Seljalandsfoss. Food options are limited but the hotel staff/owners make a fantastic dinner. We had the beef cheek and lamb and both were delicious. We were leaving early tomorrow morning, before breakfast time, so we requested early breakfast and the staff/owners made us a feast. That was so appreciated because we had been skipping breakfast from other hotels because we were leaving so early. Thank you for being such kind hosts!
- Chai (8/5): - It was a place to stay, nothing more, nothing less. No frills, no thrills. Served its purpose.
- Daxin (10/5): - Not too far off the road. Nice view, don’t forget to check the sunset out of your window if you happen to stay in the even number hotel room, gorgeous and unforgettable
- Ajay (10/5): - Property is surrounded by mountains, green grass and wildflowers. We arrived at 11:30 pm and they had kept our room key ready on the counter since they close check in at 8 pm. Breakfast was hearty! Room was modern with all the charging options - like USB which is rare in other hotels in Iceland.
- Luis (8/5): - Far away
- David (10/5): - Nice place quiet. Observe the check in times. Breakfast available. The road is gravel but is being repaired
- Joel (10/5): Selja is amazing - Favorite place in Iceland. This is a gem of a hotel located on what looks like an old Hollywood set for a western. The staff / owner is awesome, and always around. The food was amazing, and even though it is a shockingly simple menu, everything on the menu is great. Arguably the best dinners I had in all of Iceland. Looking out the window was a picturesque image of nature with Seljalandsfoss cropped by the window frame. I had no idea what to expect when I booked it, but I am super happy I did. Took a long walk down the gravel road that leads to it and was completely at peace listening to the birds.
- Julie (10/5): - Great location with wonderful views. Friendly staff, nice breakfast and excellent dinner.
- KATIE (8/5): - It was in the middle of nowhere and a little alarming to arrive without any host present. Our key and paperwork was left on the empty reception desk, with only 5 cars in the parking lot.
- Yanfret (10/5): - Very special thanks to the staff who did everything they could to help us along. Beautiful property that is perfectly located.
- Jennifer (10/5): - I wasn't expecting the location, but it turned out to be quite lovely. I would definitely stay there again. Check in was easy. The staff were friendly. The room was very nice. If I didn't have to catch the early ferry, I would have slept longer in that amazingly comfortable bed!
- Casey (10/5): - Great little spot, no complaints
- Richard (10/5): - Great hotel in perfect location
- mauricio (10/5): Great hotel and location - Great hotel isolated from everything, has restaurant on site, great food available, we had dinner and breakfast. We were able to watch the Aurora borealis from this hotel as it is pitch black around it. Would stay here in a next trip to Iceland for longer time to use it as a basecamp to explore many places nearby.
- Bruce (10/5): - A rather unique lodging experience with the serenity of its remote location in contrast to its super convenient proximity to Seljalandsfoss and the Landeyjahöfn ferry terminal. A strategic location! The hotel was clinically clean and modern with nice amenities. The breakfast buffet was fabulous. Check in and out was seamless. The hotel gets an A rating from us. Highly recommended!
- Matthew (10/5): - Wonderful staff and stay! Rooms are clean and breakfast was 👌👌
- Swee Sing Vincent (10/5): - My last stop before heading back to the city. A nice quiet environment. Good guesthouse to relax. In particular, i like the pantry area. Surprisingly good breakfast too.
- Clif (10/5): - View of waterfalls and friendly staff
- Matt (8/5): - This property was located at a great midway point between destinations, and right down the road from the Seljalandsfoss waterfall. Not much to look at from the outside, the rooms are chic and roomy. The property feels safe and quiet. We were asked not to eat in the room, which felt strange. Great value and convenient location when traveling between cities and to some sites.
- Anthony (10/5): Great stay and great breakfast. - A wonderful one night stay in a very quiet location. Wide expanse of flat land around and amazing views of the snowy mountains in the distance. Only 12 rooms in the building so not noisy. Lovely room and very comfortable. Staff friendly and helpful.
Breakfast was really lovely with a plentiful choice of cold buffet, cereals, yogurt, bread/toast and spreads. The hot buffet was had bacon beans and scrambled egg. To top it off there were waffles too. With maple syrup and bacon they were delicious.
- Leysa (10/5): - What a great place! Beautiful setting, clean and mod rooms. Great breakfast too!
- Harvinderpal (10/5): - Best place to stay, hotel staff was very good and helpful everything nearby, room are super clean breakfast was very tasty and fresh, excellent service.
- Deb (10/5): - So perfect. Easy, very clean, great breakfast and coffee!
- Bethany W (10/5): - Clean with super cute rooms. It had everything we needed for our road trip! Thank you! :)
- Verified traveler (8/5): Affordable - This hotel is in the middle of nowhere but was clean, provided what we needed. It is a good distance from everything but one restaurant about 10 min drive. They also provide meals but we chose to go out.
- LINDA (10/5): - It was quaint
- Michael (10/5): - This place is a great fine. Secluded but not too far away. Lovely rooms. Excellent service. Great breakfast. Also had an evening meal which was lovely.
- Lee (10/5): - Great place to see the northern lights
- saurav (10/5): - Awesome stay. Thank you
- Mary (10/5): - very accessible to a variety of regional adventures
- Richard (10/5): - The place looks newer. It was very well decorated and clean. The breakfast was simple, but delicious!
- Robert (8/5): Shelter From the Wind - This hotel is a metal structure with nothing much around it except rock... and WIND! The hotel itself has a common room in front and a single long hallway with rooms to either side. Our room was quite comfortable, but somewhat Spartan. The breakfast was good.
- Margaret (10/5): Lovely remote hotel - Beautiful view out room. Delicious breakfast. Great location to visit waterfalls
- Sean (10/5): - A very well-maintained and cosy hotel - staff are extremely friendly.
Surrounded by nature and views of Seljalandsfoss.
Breakfast buffet was delicious as well.
- Adam (10/5): - We had a great stay at this property! We arrived after the checkin time but staff made it very easy to still checkin. Paperwork and key were left in a safe location for us to access. If you are like us and decide not to eat dinner there, know that you’ll need to eat before gettin into your room. Along with no smoking or vaping, you are also told not to eat in your room.
- Judith (10/5): - Staff at Hotel Selja is excellent! Very friendly, service oriented and easy to be around. The hotel, while surrounded by great vistas, is simple and functional. Breakfast buffet is good as are the dinner menu options - prepared with pleasure by one of the smiling staff members.
- Maureen (10/5): - This is a small property with great attention to detail. Quiet, clean and great service.
- Chris (10/5): - Great starting point for a day on the south, with Seljalandsfoss right there, letting you get there before the crowds. It's situated far back from the roads, basically in the middle of a big field, which let us see the northern lights without any light pollution.
Staff were very friendly, room was clean and it just had a nice overall feel to it. Included breakfast was great and had waffles, which was a nice touch. Pretty sure the bread was freshly baked there as well.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - We were given a room with an accessible bathroom that was very uncomfortable; the shower was the entire bathroom, no door or curtain and we had to squeegee after showering to try to dry the floor. There were flies in our room when we arrived and the bathroom hadn't been completely cleaned.
The front desk hours hotels.com lists are deceiving, there is only a person there for a couple hours in the morning and evening. So no one was there when we checked in to address our concerns.
They do have a restaurant but you need to order what you want ahead of time, another detail not included on hotels.com.
The best part of our stay was the beautiful view of the mountains.
- Minghui (10/5): Very nice hotel - Location is amazing, staffs are very friendly and helpful, room is nice and clean, we had the best sleep from the past few days is Iceland, we would definitely recommend this hotel.
- Christy (10/5): - The hotel was great~ good breakfast
- Fiona (10/5): - I loved this little hotel. Firstly please note that it is about 2km down a rough track, it is not on a main road. And also note that reception is not always manned. But the hotel is surrounded by meadows, birds, and has wonderful views. We found the rooms to be exceptionally clean, warm, and great attention to detail meant that we had everything we needed. Coffee machine, dining space, and a mini bar were available 24/7 in the public area, meaning that we had everything we needed after a long drive. Lovely wee place.
- Ronald (6/5): - This hotel is literally in the middle of nowhere down a bumpy, mile-long dirt road. When we arrived there was absolutely no one onsite, with our keys left out on the desk to self-checkin. The room itself was very clean and newly decorated with IKEA furnishings. Very serviceable but nothing special. The exterior of the hotel looks a bit like a barn or warehouse. There are almost no dining options anywhere nearby. When we did interact with any staff, they were friendly.
- CHORNG (10/5): - Breakfast was good. The room needs a few more hooks on the wall.
- Stanislaw (10/5): - Very clean
- Sue (10/5): - Nice little hotel near Seljafoss. Order your meal, since there is nothing else around! Very nice staff.
- Michael (10/5): - It was a beautiful hotel, and the staff was helpful and attentive. Would highly recommend.
- Douglas (10/5): Friendly and convenient - Nice hotel with friendly owners. Very clean. Good location for visiting Westman Islands, Skogafoss, and Saljalandsfoss.
- Christopher (10/5): - Clean, new, views
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Quiet bit remote but lovely to open windows and hear birds. Great view of waterfalls, mountain, glacier. Breakfast was perfect and host were great!
- Warren (10/5): - Clean, comfortable quiet stay. Only wish the road 250 to
hotel is paved instead of gravel.
- arkady (10/5): - Ideally located in natural surroundings. Small place with very useful conveniences, everything needed for a weary traveller. Bed is comfortable and breakfast is tasty.
I would certainly recommend this place.
- Curtis (10/5): - Peaceful and relaxing place to stay. Very clean with great hospitality.
- Jeong (6/5): good one night stay. - decent.
- Liana Rose (10/5): THANK YOU! - I wish I could go back tomorrow! Perfect location for my travel goals, incredible service, amenities and hospitality. CAN NOT WAIT to visit again.
- Margaret (10/5): Clean, quiet, and comfortable - I stayed for two nights with my spouse. The hotel was quiet and clean and the bed was comfortable. Breakfast was tasty and there were both American‐ and European-style options on the buffet. The people running the hotel were very nice and helpful.
- MARK (10/5): - Nice little hotel remotely located just off the main highway. Staff was very attentive, particularly at breakfast.
- Margie (10/5): Remote quietness - Remote, so very quiet-no traffic noise. Comfortable beds. Full excellent breakfast included
- Melanie (10/5): - Excellent place! Clean, comfortable, and the breakfast was outstanding!
