Guest Reviews
- Mike (9/5): Just what I needed for 2 nights whilst working in Tow Law. - This venue is value for money with the owners and staff being very attentive - amenities are precisely that which you would expect of the venue when you view it. Ideal for short stays when exploring County Durham. They are renowned fot their Sunday lunchtime roasts. All was fine
- Eric (8/5): Very comfortable and relaxing. - Super friendly owners and staff very welcoming. It felt as though we were staying at a friends house.
We had an evening meal which was freshly cooked and filling, staff were aware of our dietary requirements.
Breakfast set us up for the day.
- Duffy (7/5): - Very helpful understanding and the staff took time to listen and took care Stay overnight was cut short due to email from my doctors about an appointment the following morning apart from I have no complaints what so ever .
- Sharron (10/5): - Family run buisness and they make you feel at home you can smell the lovley cooked food early on a sunday morning
Great value for money ..good home cooked food ..prices are good.
Great if your attending the antique fair as its close by as we do ..
Weve booked quite a few times now and wouldn't go Anywhere else
- Tracey (10/5): Clean & very friendly - Friendly
- JeremyKarl (8/5): Pleasantly surprised - The staff were exceptionally friendly. The fish used for my fish and chips dinner was exceptionally good. Cooked breakfast was faultless. There was plenty of parking. The shower facilities in the bathroom were modern. Room was spotless. At first glance, the place might not look much, but looks can be deceiving! Breakfast included tea/coffee, but the coffee was instant and I am more used to drinking fresh coffee. I am used to a harder bed (a personal preference)
- Martyn (9/5): Will definitely stay there again. - Lovely welcome, very friendly. Evening meal prepared for us. Breakfast in the morning was good but no drink offered.

- Sharron (8/5): In short - it was great & we's go again - Cost & homely
Excellent minced beef & dumplings

Great location The bedding - I prefer cotton or linen

- Mike (9/5): Excellent room, excellent food and lovely family owners. - The room was spacious with a huge round bed and it had a double width bath and large shower in the bathroom. The room was very clean and all the amenities you would expect. The home cooked food served downstairs was lovely. We had both breakfast and dinner and for the price you couldn't get better. They also have a well stocked bar, especially if you like whisky which myself and the Mrs certainly made the most of. The family that run the place make you feel very welcome as soon as you arrive. The brown horse maybe abit remote for some people (although the village is only a 20 min walk away) but for us it's location was perfect for a night away with countryside all around. We will definitely return.
- HARNISH (10/5): Excellent service provided, would definitely recommend! - Stopped here for an overnight stay and was genuinely impressed. From the moment I arrived, the service was fantastic – the staff were incredibly friendly, warm, and courteous. I was welcomed with such genuine hospitality, which really made a difference. The room was very comfortable and clean – a lovely place to relax after a long journey. There’s also a large parking area, which was perfect for parking my coach with no issues at all. The food was absolutely delicious with generous portions and great quality. Would absolutely stay here again and highly recommend to others! N/A
- Richard (7/5): Average - Excellent Bedroom carpet has seen better days
- Nigel (10/5): Excellent and would recommend to anyone - Room was warm and comfy, food was great and staff were absolutely 10 out of 10.

- Jonathan (10/5): 👍 The Brown Horse Hotel 👍 - Enjoyed the location, completely out the way situated on the A68, no noise in the room and although the bed creaked, had the best 3 nights sleep in such a long time. Bar / Cafe below the room with really nice owners which gave a very warm welcome and easy to talk to, had a couple of beers with them and was left in awe of how much they have achieved! Getting out of bed!

- Phillip (1/5): Very cold during the night heating was not on with below zero temperatures - Location was open and plenty of parking They did not put the heating on and temperatures were very low. We were cold all night as well as other guests complaining about it. Tried to call the number on night and went straight to voicemail. Got an excuse the next morning that the day staff didn’t pass message to night staff to have heating on but this should have been a given with temperatures below zero. Very run down looking building. Paid the next morning and would have expected a discount as they admitted there mistake but still took the full amount for the stay, very disappointing. Would have been the same temperature through the night if we had stayed in a garden shed.
- Robert (1/5): No heating in my room or my sons room - Nothing No heating in room

- Rob (8/5): Great stay at a rustic country hotel with a friendly staff. - Friendly staff, loved talking with Bennie, Melody and the other ladies. They knew a lot about the area and were happy to share information. The hotel was quite near the place we were visiting.
- JOHN VICTOR (8/5): Was like Cuprinol, did what it says on the tin. - Room was big, the bed very comfortable. Shower room good. Nothing
- Balkwill (6/5): - Fabulous, friendly host, very welcoming. Beds low and not very comfortable.
- irene (4/5): Chippy. - Comfortable bed.
Excellent place for passing truckers or bikers. Noisy road .Bedroom above kitchen and smelt of fried oil.
- Paul (8/5): Very friendly, very good value, quirky place to stay on the A68. - I really enjoyed staying at this quirky, casual and super-friendly place and would certainly stay there again. The owner and all the staff were really nice and very friendly people. It was a real experience and well worth the reasonable cost. The room had a telly, super powerful heating and a good sized bed. Powerful shower over the bath with plenty of hot water.
I chose to eat there in the evening, and it was proper belly-filling comfort food. The mince and dumplings was brilliant. Didn't have the optional breakfast, so can't comment on that, but the price had gone up a couple of quid from that mentioned on the booking.com website.
The wifi was fast and easy to connect, and the location convenient to break a journey north or south on the A68, my favourite road to Scotland. Loads of parking. Quirky it is, and although I really enjoyed it, it would not be for everybody. It was basically very clean, but there were dots of black mould on some of the bath sealant, and a couple of small stains in the bath. The decor and design was, to say the least, different. A communal fridge on the landing was a first.
- john (8/5): Ok for a single night but no more. a tired place saved by the lovely couple who ran it. - The woman who ran it was very very nice it was very isolated and in honesty it was tired.
a place single working lads stay really.
The lady who ran it and her husband are lovely though and couldn’t have done more for us.
But do check with restaurant meal
opening times

- Olivia (8/5): - Friendly and the food was good and plentiful!
- Baker (7/5): Good vibe - Good value, staff v. friendly & helpful. Food good and generous.
Bobbi deserves a raise, couldn't do enough for you. In need of t.l.c. but we all know how expensive that can be.
- Short (10/5): We had a lovely day - Although the property was very plain from the outside once inside it was much better my family and I were made to feel very welcome by the staff and nothing was too much trouble for them It wasn’t really anything we didn’t like about the property
- Katherine (10/5): Hidden gem in Tow Law - What a lovely hotel! And honestly, the most comfortable bed I've ever slept on in a hotel! The room was very clean, as was the bathroom.

- Suzanne (7/5): Good value and convenient for us to visit nearby relatives. - We were given a room with double aspect to give a breeze through the room due to the hot weather. Looks like there was an issue with their drainage at the front of the building.

Good homely food. Had dinner and breakfast. Note kitchens close at 1930 hrs. I arrived at 1900. Cushions on bed a bit kitsch. Yard outside a bit scruffy. Room could have been quieter if double glazed. Some traffic noise.
- Andrzej (10/5): -

- donald (5/5): last minute choice description via booking .com does not reflect the actual - Staff very friendly Ordered meal from the menu Sirloin Steak advertised to come with thick cut fresh chips onions rings mushrooms etc.
Ordered rare to medium with Fried egg extra. When it came it was overcooked medium, chips looked like they had been cooked hours earlier then heated up, soggy mess, onion rings burnt to crisp. mushrooms no taste.
Couldnt eat it.
Breakfast not a lot better more like a second rate truckers pit stop. Not hotel standard for the price charged.
- Sarah (10/5): - Stayed here a few times now and find it very welcoming and friendly. Staff are always very helpful and the food is lovely. My daughter lay watching the cows in the field for hours 🙂
