Guest Reviews
- Leopold (8/5): - Definitely recommended this place for the price we got (about 550 thb for two people per night), if you are open to some southeast asian charme.
The garden is absolutely stunning to chill and have some drink after a day of exploring. The view on the river is also great. But the room itself is a little old-fashioned. You'll have a good (air conditioned) night and be able to wash yourself, but don't expect everything to be squeaky clean and be ready for the miscellaneous ant or other bug here or there.
Would go again if I could
- JJK106 (6/5): ya get what ya pay for. - Visited a friend who was booked in here. I think that the original owner has shifted to a new building across town with the same name. What is left is showing its age. Rooms are bungalows and small motel-style. Nothing wrong but nothing to recommend it either. But ya get what ya pay for. at around 5-600 per night this is indeed one of the most economical places to stay.
Accueil moyen.
- Anthea (8/5): - This property was perfectly positioned for our stay. The view across the river is lovely and the garden is well kept and a lovely space to relax in.
The room had everything we needed.
- Colin (10/5): - Excellent location with a great garden. Good price, comfortable room.
- James (10/5): - The bungalow was great
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great hotel - Very nice property in a stunning location with a beautiful riverside garden.
Rooms are basic but comfortable, hotel is in a great location for bars and restaurants in the area.
Only downside is the rooms don't have a fridge.
- J4939HJmichaelp (4/5): Not good - There are a number of guest houses along the river in this area which is more or less the tourism strip. I checked out a couple of them before choosing the Frog, as it was the best option at a walk-in price of 500 THB.
Although the garden setting on the river is indeed lovely, the accommodation itself is very basic even by Asian standards. The air-conditioning and hot water worked well but the bedding was dirty and of poor quality.
Unfortunately, I had bad luck with the people occupying the room above me. They were up until the wee hours of the morning and I could here every move they made.
Overall, a rather unpleasant stay, so I chose a different accommodation for the next night.
- Chris-in-thailand (8/5): Very nice place. - A nice place in a great spot on the river and near to the nightlife. But a lovely quiet place.
Good food on site at very reasonable prices.
The owner was very helpful when I needed repairs to my motorbike, taking me on her bike to find a garage that was open.
Thanks :)
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice loca3 - Good location, basic but good room without a fridge in the room. Staff were friendly and helpful.
- Graham_and_Susan414 (6/5): Meal and drinks - They have a large varied menu of western and asian food, the food prices are reasonable. The price of a beer was reasonable. The staff were nice and friendly, and good service. We have visited on more than one occasion and will visit again when we go to Kanchanaburi again.
- suntoucher07 (2/5): Cheating staff! - I been coming here for 16 years since it was called jolly frog, it has its ups and downs BUT one thing never changed is the restaurant staff adding and stealing a few extra baht on the bill, yes it was happening before and still happening, i always know what i order and how much it cost, this time 3 days in a row i went to eat there and order the same thing, and today with a different waitress she charged me almost double, talked to the boss but ofcourse she took her staff side, terrible attitude from the staff and dissapointed reaction from boss, i will never come there again and i will make sure many will hear about it!
- emafinijjhB6035EQ (4/5): New owners - Smiley Frog restaurant used to have an excellent reputation for good quality food and service at an affordable price. Sadly, the quality of good food and service left with the previous owners.
Disappointing meal with terrible service.
How strange, in light of the current tourist downturn, to ask your customers to settle the bill when the food is still being delivered to the table; simply because the owner wishes to count the money. What if we had wanted another drink, dessert or coffee??
As said, this restaurant USED to have an excellent reputation. A reputation that took the previous owners years to build but the new owners took only minutes to lose forever.
Not recommended.
- YKato (10/5): - I like the huge garden facing the river.
- robinc806 (10/5): Excellent Views of River Kwae - This is the second time I have stayed at Smiley Frog. The garden is expertly tended by a couple of ladies and it always looks beautiful. There are deckchairs and a hammock as well as shaded seating areas next to the river and a floating raft with tables and chairs under a roof with an area you can fish from. There are some ornate Thai style traditional wooden bungalows if you prefer those to rooms in the main building which has downstairs fan rooms for 320baht and upstairs aircon rooms for a bit more.
The restaurant serves Thai, Mexican and European food and has excellent service and very cheap prices for those on a low budget. Although served in a very clean and modern setting the majority of the Thai food dishes will cost you only 40 to 50 baht.
Very good coffee is also served by a very pretty smiley young lady called Maprahn. You can also rent motorcycles from her grandfather in the motorbike hire place nextdoor on the right after leaving the soi which Smiley Frog is in. Motorcycles are 200baht per day.
- paul (6/5): Lovely Hotel & gardens by the River - Good Hotel for short stay. Lovely Garden to relax on the River. Staff very welcoming. Great Menu at cheap prices. Room walls very thin. Consign We would stay here again.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Clean but simple, food very good at reasonable price , little noisy with expansion work, but only for short periods of time
- Mike (6/5): Would recommend shopping around the area. - Excellent location and restaurant right on the river. No refrigerator, paper thin walls and had to ask for towels, no room cleanup.
- Coastal127674 (10/5): Great for a break - We stayed here for 2 weeks. Very very clean. Towels and bedding changed often. Lovely gardens to relax in that go down to the river. Quiet location away from the main bar/tourist area. Popular restaurant on site affordable prices. Very relaxing sad to leave.
- Damir (10/5): - Nice hotel on good position. Close to everything and has a parking place. Rooms are clean and there is everything you might need. A/C working ok as well as Wi-Fi.
- maxim4500 (10/5): Backpackers dream - Me and my girlfriend stayed for 2 nights and it was just perfect for us.
The rooms were clean, had a comfortable large double bed ,hot watet, powerful A/C, a small porch and really fun and pretty shared backyard with a hammock, tables and some banches.
The highlight of this place was the amazing and generous staff. They helped us with every matter and question we had, offered some good tips concerning transportation around here and were always willing to help with a smile.
The place has an indoor resturant with some great dishes (we recommend chicken noodle soup and banana pancakes for desert, go get it), also there's a massage place right next to it and a motorcycle rental service right out the door.
If you are in kanchanaburi and want a place to stay and enjoy your vacation go pay a visit to Smiley frog!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Nice friendly hotel, good location and lovely staff. Thoroughly enjoyed my stay
- sah79 (10/5): Excellent - I stayed 2 nights with my son and a friend. My son and I had a twin room with hot shower for 350baht per night and my friend had a double room with cold shower for 320 per night. All the fan rooms are overlooking the river with a beautiful garden with deck chairs and hammock plus a deck on the river too. Food is cheap and really good - I am always dubious when the menu is extensive as the food is probably all frozen pre prepared, especially if western, but we ate Thai and Western food and it was great. Rooms were clean with comfy mattresses. The owner is lovely and very helpful. Would totally recommend
- robinc806 (10/5): Lovely location in garden beside River Kwai - I arrived in Kanchanaburi on the 110 baht bus from Sai Tai and on arrival I got a motorbike taxi with sidecar to take me to " Jolly Frog" It has recently changed name to " Smiley Frog" and it is in a beautiful location next to the river with bungalows as well as a couple of two storey wings and a large restaurant area. A double room with bathroom and fan is a bargain for 320 baht. The bungalows have a balcony with table and chairs to sit outside or you can sit in a hamock and look at the river. It is about a ten minute walk to the Death Railway Museum which costs 140 baht for foreigners and includes coffee in the upstairs restaurant. To look at all the exhibits and read all the information requires at least two hours, but the ticket is calid all day so I did it in two visits. I even met a Singaporean who managed to trace the route taken by his grandfather who was a prisoner of war. Opposite the museum is an allied war cemetery and across the road a Catholic Church ( Mass at 9.30am Sundays). From the Smiley Frog it is about 2 km walk to the famous Bridge over the River Kwai, and there is a market for streetfood next to the bridge, some bamboo floating restaurants beside it, and some World War Two era steam trains on display at the far end of the platform.
The staff of the Smiley Frog are very friendly and the menu is full of 40 and 50 baht meals, so no more expensive than in the street! I am writing this from my room there which has free Wi Fi. The place is very clean and I have met lots of nice people in Kanchanaburi. Today I intend to hire a bicycle for 50 baht to explore the rest of the town. There is also a bar serving 10 baht cocktails and carious Thai whiskies a few yards down the street. The Smiley Frog is very clean and modern and they have just completed the roof of the large restaurant area yesterday.
- nicoladee6 (8/5): Clean and basic - all you need - As backpackers, we turned up here last minute, and there were luckily rooms available.
We had the most basic and cheapest room at about £5 a night, we stayed 4 nights and I can't really complain.
It was clean- so many in Thailand aren't if you're backpacking on that budget. They provided a bottle of water each, and toilet paper. We also only originally booked for 2 days, then they were fine for us to add on extra nights on the morning we were meant to be leaving- they are flexible. The beds were a bit hard, but to be honest I struggled to find a comfy bed in the whole of Thailand.
The restaurant was ok. Cheap and cheerful, but I would keep it basic, my stomach didn't like anything except their Pad Thai and Penang Curry.
The staff are really friendly and would let us leave our bags at reception on the day we left, till our bus was due.
It is in the lonely planet guide for a reason - it is the one in Kanchanaburi of you are backpacking.
- 450ronnys (10/5): Little piece of heaven - I'm giving this place a 5 star review because of the experience I had as a solo backpacker and a laid back chill personality, however this does not mean the place does not have a few flaws or wouldn't suit you.
Amazing location, has scooter/bicycle and a spa just outsite close to the main town area with bars restaurants different vibes lots of locals and thai youth, sitting by the river, offers cheap rooms from 5USD ~ 15USD ac\fan\wifi\hot shower, all go into the price, beautiful garden in the middle with rooms around it and river bank is below you can watch the sunset by the water, simply breathtaking.
Rooms are comfy and private, I think this place serves mainly an older crowd but I saw more than a few young people.
Guest house Restaurant has tasty cheap food not the best around, has a huge confusing menu not sure why they're not keeping it small, simple and authentic, but overall tasty and has some western cuisine in it which I haven't tried.
Staff are wonderful and overall very welcoming and kind hearted just like the rest of the people around here not much English speaking other than the owners.
Prices 4.5/5
Location 5/5
Cleanliness 4/5
Staff 5/5
Definitely coming back here someday!
