Guest Reviews
- Bryan (1/5): Terrible - Nothing Everything.
Strong smell of cooked food when entering.
Shown to room, heavy condensation on windows complete with rotten frames.
After using the toilet a very strong smell of sewage in the room.
Changed rooms, still condensation running on the windows.
Did book for 2 nights but decided 1was enough.
Didn’t bother with the breakfast,we went somewhere else.
This property should not be listed as not really fit for purpose.
Was told by the proprietor that they were leaving on the 25/12/2025, as property was closing for refurbishment.
- Nigel (8/5): Nice - Great location for wedding we were attending Rooms 4 a bit tired could do with a lick of paint damp showing in the roof of bathroom
Curtains in room not fixed right Plus one radiator not working
- Nigel (5/5): Would nt recommend - Location OK breakfast good We stayed in room 2 too small 4 us bed to low down nearly sleeping on floor
Bathroom far too small shower too room OK for single person I think personally .
Do tap on widows they may fall out
- Nigel (8/5): Ok - Room 5 comfortable
Breakfast OK Rain
- graham (7/5): - Nice location. Good size room but a bit dated. Staff very helpful. Requested room with shower due to age. Got room with bath which wife could not use.
- Mark (4/5): Health hazard. - Location good. Mould in room 4. In main room as well as in bathroom. Not a few decks but a lot. Only 2 cups for 4 people. Mould also on cheese sandwiches that was made as had to leave before breakfast that was between 8am and 8:45.
- Guest (10/5): - Extremely comfortable room with a lovely view of the hills. The staff were very friendly and as a solo traveller I felt safe.
- Ian (7/5): This was a 2 night stay for a short break but was adequate - Food was excellent, and especially the Indonesian menu Very dated and in need of modernisation. The bed in the room was very low and seemed more like a camp bed. Bathroom was cramped and needed refurbishment.
- Sharon (8/5): -

- Artur (6/5): -
- Barbara (8/5): Perfect base for exploring the area - Lovely old building with cosy restaurant and bar. Staff were very accommodating. Relaxed feel with lots of walkers. Grindleford is beautiful. The bath in our room was an extra bonus. Not all rooms have one though. This is a hotel really looking at green travel. Nice choice of British and Indonesian food. Breakfast very well cooked and presented without being over fed. Some mattresses seem a bit dated, but we were able to change room before resting there. Some minor repairs needed.

- Linda (10/5): Lovely character hotel, ideal to relax after a day's walking. - Lovely character hotel set in beautiful surroundings. We had a free upgrade to a premium room which gave us a wonderful view of the hills. Despite being the local pub and restaurant, it was very quiet in the bedrooms above. Breakfast freshly cooked and staff very attentive. Definitely recommend to others. Nothing to change.
- Michelle (6/5): - Fabulous location, huge carpark, dog friendly. Lots of hot water, large room great view. Property in need of refurbishment which is ok but being run down. Had to go and buy our own toilet roll!! Chair in room had broken leg and not replaced until I had complained twice. They need a new chef.
- Tracey (4/5): Refund or somekind - Breakfast and location Our room is not the room in the picture.
Our room no4 was very very unsuitable
Really odd and mouldy
Curtains broke.
Mould on the walls.
Money back I think or something back.
I have pictures of the room we were given
- Atika (9/5): -
- Jane (8/5): Very enjoyable and excellent location for exploring the Peak District - They upgraded our room for free from the second night as it was my birthday. It was a far superior room. Staff were very friendly and the Indonesian food was particularly good. TV screen could have been bigger
- John (8/5): -
- Mary (7/5): -
- peter van langen (8/5): goed - locatie summier ontbijt alleen full english ,allleen na aandringen wat anders te krijgen
- Natalia Orrala Vera (9/5): Nice views - Friendly staff who were able to accomodate for gluten free english breakfast. Regular english breakfast was served to my partner and there is cereal too. There is parking on-site and the view from the room was great. Overall cleanliness could be improved such as few cobwebs and mold in the bathroom. We believe this could improve the experience as rooms are nice.
- Shelley (8/5): Great location for Hope Valley - Fab location for the Hope Valley. Good breakfast. Friendly welcoming staff Menu food so-so. English food not wonderful but the Indonesian menu made a nice change.
- Kate (8/5): Ich komme gerne wieder - Sehr freundliches Personal und sehr schöne Lage mit vielen Möglichkeiten zum Wandern
- Naomi (4/5): - Hondvriendelijk. Er zat schimmel in de badkamer.
Moeilijk te regelen watertemperatuur voor de douche.
Weinig tot geen keuze in ontbijt.
- Jack (10/5): Super - Geweldige locatie eten was perfect, en personeel was top. Alles was goedemorgen
- Bev (6/5): Good for the price, but pretty basic. - Literally needed somewhere to rest our heads over two nights. Room clean, fresh towels, extra pillows. Some road noise. Squeaky floorboards. Cold water in bath was a drip! (Took ages to fill the bath.) Cannot comment on breakfast as we were out too early to enjoy it. Nice bar on site for nightcap. Did not see any staff except barman as we were in and out far too early and late. Bit disappointed that bed was not made up after our first night, no replenishment of tea etc - in fact no one had been in the room to do anything from what we could see. However, for the price we paid we were overall happy with the stay. We will possibly return next year. Our room was not serviced at all in the time we stayed there. Was looking forward to a freshly made bed and tea/biscuits.
- Linda (10/5): - Beautiful views and warm hosts. Indonesian menu was excellent. Ordered beef rendang. Dessert was tasty. Happy with breakfast and great value. Twin room faces carport and is a little on the small side, however I slept well.
- Stephen (9/5): -
- Erwin (7/5): Sir William Grindleford Bridge - Prima uitvalsbasis voor het Peak District Hotel heeft onderhoud nodig
- Zoltan (10/5): -
- Adrian (8/5): -
- Gerald Happe (8/5): -
- Les (8/5): Nice location, with excellent staff great food - Food was excellent, Staff were brilliant, nice location It was very tired and needed updating
Bed was uncomfortable and low
Toilet didn’t clear tissue ever after a few flushes
Room service could have been better
- Paul (7/5): - Good location and views. Power shower. Fresh milk. Needed to use the fan as little window opening. No fruit or yogurt out for breakfast. Poor sausages.
- Amanda (7/5): Great location for exploring peak district, basic but comfortable and friendly staff. - Great location for visiting chatsworth and the peak district. Friendly staff. Comfortable and good size room, good thick curtains.
Good selection of cereals The breakfast was nice enough, but basic. sausages and toast were lower quality.
I felt dinner was expensive for what we ate.
- Simon (6/5): -
- Rachel (8/5): Pleasant stay - Amazing views from our room and restaurant. Gentleman that helped us to our room and gave us information was very friendly. Very clean everywhere including our room. Bathroom a bit small. Soap/shower gel dispenser broken, and so struggled to get any out. Reported but didn't get fixed or hear any more.
No fresh fruit at breakfast or alternative milks available.
- C Birchley (8/5): - Location was ideal and food was very good
Bed was comfortable and the room was large. The staff were friendly and it was great value for money. They take family pets with a charge, and that made the stay easier Room was a little tired, and shower access was via a bath.
- Yusaf (10/5): -
- Maxine (8/5): We still loved it as the views was spectacular - The views A bit tired
- Jacqueline (5/5): Grindleford is lovely, the location is great but the hotel is in desperate need of an update and deep clean and the brea - The location is fantastic The property is very tired and in need of an update, rotten windows and dirty carpets needs a deep clean
- Chris (4/5): Just passable but won't go again - Food was excellent. Staff very friendly and helpful. Room was very tired looking. En suite very dated and tiny. Bedding smelt odd.
- David (9/5): Sir William Grindleford stay - Good area to explore all of surrounding areas of interest within half hour journey. The staff were very friendly and service at breakfast and dinner quick, delicious and hot. Room was large with amazing views and two comfy chairs. The window that was left open on arrival unfortunately wouldn't close properly. However as it was warm we never mentioned snd it looked like in winter they would put a secondary glazing unit in to jeep warm. Slight problem with shower head staying up but nothing that would put us off staying there again. The breakfast was very good and if you didn't want everything you only needed to say, even something different if they gad it there they would oblige. Only one problem, and that was on check I asked if I could have soya or any other alternative milk. Was told they would make a note but none was forthcoming. Would have bee. Happy to take my own but Obviously didn't have fridge to keep it in.
- John (6/5): OK for the price, but in need of improvement - Staff were friendly.
Bar area is Quite OK, with good range of beers.
Towels were good.
Location is great The building is in dire need of improvement.
The room was OK, but it was a bit dark and in need of a coat of paint.
I thought it would be Posh (called 'Sir William' - sounds Posh; in Grindleford - feels Posh) - but...Posh it was not.
The noise from the road was pretty persistent and windows that didn't close properly made it difficult to keep out.
Breakfast was OK - but options were limited to 'Full English' or veggie version of the same.
- Julie (7/5): Great location with fabulous views and food. Would stay again. - The English breakfast was excellent with friendly efficient staff The property in general is very tired and in need of some maintenance.
- joanne (8/5): Hotel with amazing views - The owner of the hotel was very friendly and worked so hard. The included breakfast was fantastic, full English plus a vegetarian one also offered. As well as cereal and fresh juice etc.We where made to feel very welcome.
Amazing views from the gardens. A little tired in places but I feel it's a work in progress.
- William (9/5): A comfortable stay - We enjoyed a clear comfortable room and bathroom.
Tasty food served by cheerful staff. Sadly the outside of the building is very tired and certainly could be off putting. This is unfortunate because the hotel has great potential as a holiday centre with wonderful views from the many guest and public rooms, and spacious garden.
- saskia (8/5): Good value, clean and amazing Indonesian Cuisine - Lovely location, really friendly and helpful staff . Quaint and homely Nothing
- Monica (10/5): -
- Bob (10/5): -
- Ann (8/5): - The view UpdatingThe bathroom needed
- Janice (10/5): Totally relaxing stay in a beautiful location. Friendly and helpful staff. - Breakfast is excellent and we recommend eating in as well. There is a choice of an English and also Indonesian menu. The Chicken spring rolls just melt in your mouth and the smells coming from the kitchen entice you to try the food, cooked fresh on site. On arrival, we were informed that Booking.com had upgraded our room and we had a valley view. It was totally unexpected and we were really pleased and it made our holiday even more special. This was our second stay at the Sir William, as we came here a few months ago. We loved it so much we had to come back and this hotel is now our Peak District holiday base. Nothing.
- Gary (3/5): Very poor - The staff were very polite and helpful This place is in need of some serious investment. Let's leave it at that
- David (8/5): Very quiet place nice food drinks comfortable bed view excellent - Very good breakfast staff excellent food very good room could do with a bit of paint old property so understand why Bit disappointed they wouldn’t let us use blue light card seeing it was a Greene king
- Galina (9/5): -
- Terry (8/5): - The views were stunning, very peaceful location.
- Jonathan (9/5): Great for exploring outdoors. Good value and clean - My second time here in 2 months, great for exploring and only 10mins from railway station. It’s a good value place and as reviewed previously, Indonesian food is fab.
Yes, the building itself needs some tlc, but personally I feel the charges reflect that. Staff are super and plenty of parking on site too.
- Anna (5/5): - Very good location. Quiet area. The staff is very nice. Yes, the rooms are outdated, but it doesn't matter to me. This is the place where I'm sleeping and taking a shower. The only thing I truly expect from a hotel is cleanliness – everything else is in second place. I am certain that if the owners paid more attention to the cleanliness of the rooms and bathrooms, this hotel would receive much better reviews. Unfortunately our room wasn't clean in my opinion. There were hairs in the bathtub and limescale in the toilet, which could have been easily cleaned before guests arrived. The radiator in the bathroom was covered in dust. There was also a noticeable smell of cigarettes in the room and bathroom. In addition, I had booked a room with a sitting area, but ours did not have one, so please double-check that you are actually getting the room you paid for.
- Page (9/5): Would definitively stay here again - 1. The views from the dining room
2. The food selection especially as it included Indonesian dishes.
3. Friendliness of the waiter
4. Environmentally friendly
5. Shower very easy to get stable required temperature
6. Large soft thick towels
7. Good Indonesian chefs
8. Great breakfasts 1. Mattresses too soft for our taste (Room 3)
2. Manager not very friendly, only saw him briefly when we arrived.
3. Would have preferred alternative brand of coffee in room
- Francesco (7/5): -
- Claire (8/5): -
- Danni2306 (6/5): - Lovely little pub / hotel feel. Good value for money. Bed was extremely uncomfortable. Barely slept all night for turning to try and find comfort. Shower mixer was a little disappointing as it didnt let enough cold water through to cool the hot for a shower.
- Willy (7/5): - Prachtig uitzicht over de heuvels. Heerlijk Indonesische maaltijden. Likje verf op de kozijnen en een bloemetje buiten zou de boel opvrolijken
- DEBORAH (9/5): Lovely stay and would come again - Great hotel, lovely food, stunning views, nice and quiet Room was gorgeous but when you looked closely was in need of an overhaul
- Katarzyna (10/5): - The best breakfast, very tasty. Plus by the amazing view. The room was spacious and had everything we needed (even tasty cookies). Near by there are beautiful footpaths that mustn't be missed
- Owen (3/5): Amazing staff, amazing food....that was it - The staff, location, and food were amazing The windows were rotten. Unfortunately, I was at the front of the building and was woken both mornings at 4.30 am. The bed was uncomfortable. The toilets didn't flush, the bathroom ceiling was mouldy, and the grouting was dirty, so I only had a shower one morning. The second morning, I waited till I got home.
I would have walked out on arrival if I hadn't have had plans
- Andy (8/5): - Value for money, good menu and very good food.
- Clive (9/5): A comfortable stay which we would be happy to repeat. - We very much enjoyed our one night stay at the Sir William Hotel. The staff were friendly, the room was comfortable and the food excellent. Happy to stay there again.
- David (8/5): Adequate - Location and views I’m disabled and had to climb a lot of steep stairs. This was pointed out when booking.
- Kristina (7/5): Fine for a one night stay. - Breakfast was good. Locals sitting at the bar making it difficult to get served.
- Katy (2/5): Filthy! Worst ever place I’ve stayed would not return - Views were beautiful
Staff pleasant enough
Towels and beds clean Avoid at all cost!!!! Awful
Filthy rooms basic cleaning not done. Deep clean desperately needed. Thick dust on wood work, mouldy bathroom broken window catches mouldy window frames. Filthy net curtains. Coffee (hopefully coffee) thrown up walls not wiped away.
smell from greasy kitchen blew into room as windows won’t close as broken
Toilet stained. Taps sharp because broken Hot water so hot it burnt no warning.
Food in restaurant awful greasy stodgy microwaved mush not as described on menu
My mother was ill the day after eating here.
- Indra (8/5): - Place with a character and very beautiful views. Definitely try the Indonesian food for dinner - it was absolutely delicious. The English breakfast was very good too. Not cleaned under the bed.
- Elizabeth (2/5): -
- Andy (8/5): -
- Tracy (6/5): We had a pleasant stay. There was everything we needed but it does need some updating. - The hosts were very friendly and helpful. The bedding and towels were good quality and clean. The complimentary toiletries were good quality and there was plenty of loo rolls available. Our room was spacious and there was enough storage. The downstairs had been decorated and was comfortable. The bedroom and bathroom need updating. The bed was uncomfortable for us.
- Tiffany (6/5): - Great views and great breakfast Rooms really ran down and mattress uncomfortable need completely re modernising but get what you pay for
- Joy (7/5): -
- Richard (3/5): Filthy - A great location in the Peak District, easy parking with walks from the doorstep and a short drive to key locations. Probably the filthiest place I’ve stayed. Felt quite offended that they thought we’d find it acceptable to stay in such a filthy room.
Pub seems ok, but rooms are filthy. See my pictures. The shower was like an upright coffin, if you are larger than 34 waist or taller than 5’11 then no chance.
The management need to really have a reality check and should be ashamed of the standard of cleanliness.
The place would also benefit from updating throughout.
- Michele (7/5): Used hotel as was near families residence, very dated and needed a good deep clean. Wouldn’t recommend or stay there aga - The location was fantastic The facilities were dated and grubby, a vag if dirty bedding was left in the room and the bathroom was dirty. Breakfast wasn’t too good.
- Angie (10/5): - Very friendly staff and always helpful, food was exceptional: fresh home cooked food and good value for money, fabulous views of the area from the lounge. Property a little dated and needs some tlc but was very clean and comfortable
- rob (10/5): Excellent staff care and consideration in hotel with amazing views - Echo and Richard were excellent, from the late arrival keeping the kitchen open to the care and consideration for a medical incident. Breakfast superb, just the thing before a long walk in the Peaks. Dinner choices also great. Amazing views from restaurant area. Place is a bit tired. Could do with new carpets on stairs and some single pane glass windows do not shut properly.
- Evelyn (5/5): Disappointing and gutted by the price which should have reflected a better overall standard. - Very jaded and basic for the price. Needs an update and a good clean Very overpriced for the facilities, full breakfast, and general atmosphere. The smell of food permeating from the kitchen to the bedroom was overpowering. Bed was very low and very uncomfortable. I was told how to open the main door after 10.30pm and the instructions included kicking and pushing it. Certainly not worth £243.00 for 2 nights. Very disappointing.
- Hans (9/5): -
- Dr Kiumars Shoghi (7/5): - Breakfast was good the location was very good with beautiful views
The staff were very helpful Would have preferred a double bed rather than two singles
- Erica (9/5): The staff were very helpful and the food in the bar was excellent. - Well located for what we wanted. The road was noisy at the front of hotel.
- Alan (8/5): - Great staff, good food and great area Toilet too cramped and shower was a very high step
- Neal (7/5): Good weekend in the Peak District for the MacMillan Mighty Hike - Good location for local attractions, good views. Hotel is in need of a refresh and repair in some areas
- Mark (7/5): -
- Guest (7/5): Nothing incredible, but absolutely worth the money - It was strong value for money, the room was comfy enough, bathroom had everything it needed. The pub downstairs was quaint and the breakfast was a simple full English. Nothing lavish but for the price it exceeded expectations Staff were fairly quiet, not unfriendly by any means but just not massively talkative people.
- tina (6/5): - The views were delightful and the Rioja wine exceptional. Parking was easy too. The dinner menu had Indonesian food on offer. My sister and I ordered a chicken satay starter. It arrived with 4 sticks with tiny bits of chicken hard as rocks with seemingly burnt dry peanut butter on top. We returned it. As we both dislike rice, we asked for noodles (it was on the menu with other dishes) with our mains. It came with Pot Noodles.. it was awful. A sad show of Indonesian cuisine. However, the Rioja wine was great!
A full English breakfast came swimming in oil. They really need to learn how to cook. And Yes, they charged us for the two dinners with pot noodles, but not the satay .
Take your own pot noodles. It would be cheaper.
Comparing the B&B charge of £85
- Robert (10/5): - Very friendly staff.
