Guest Reviews
- Dianne H (8/5): - The guesthouse is well-located, close to Dover Castle and a walk down the hill into the downtown area. The room was comfortable though up a couple of steep staircases which might pose a challenge to those with mobility issues. The main drawback is that there is no breakfast available so it is necessary to walk downtown to get something to eat in the morning. However, the concierge, John, is so helpful and affable that he really made our visit a pleasure. For younger people who are looking for good value and don't mind a walk before breakfast, this is a good choice and John is a delightful host.
- Ellen (10/5): Excellent location, lovely clean and classy room with all the necessities. - The room itself was spotless, smelled good, nicely decorated and very spacious. It felt very classy. The neighborhood was very quiet in the evenings. John, the host, was kind, welcoming and super helpful in recommending places to see, how to easily get there and places to eat. He was also very knowledgeable about the history of the area. I recommend staying two nights if you have time! There wasn’t really anything that we did not like. It might seem strange to some to have the shower in the room and not together with the toilet but this worked well giving the room more of a spacious feel and you do need to remember that the house is 200 years old! I would recommend that the owners consider putting in a more comfortable mattress as it was a bit hard but this didn’t bother us as we were tired after a long day of walking and exploring.
- Susan (10/5): - John, our host, was a wealth of knowledge on local history. Great location.
- Lea (8/5): Warm Hospitality and a Personal Touch - We booked this guesthouse spontaneously and were glad to find a place. Dover was quite busy with a cruise ship departing the next day.
The house has a traditional, slightly nostalgic charm that gives it character without trying too hard. What really made the stay memorable, though, was the lovely concierge. Friendly, genuinely interested, and always up for a good conversation, he adds a wonderfully personal touch to the whole experience.
It felt less like a transaction and more like being welcomed into someone’s home - with a host who enjoys getting to know his guests.
All in all, a pleasant and personal stay in a convenient location.
- Kelsey (10/5): Great experience all around - We had such a pleasant experience staying here. The room was clean and quiet. John is an excellent concierge and provided the best recommendations on things to do during our stay in Dover! Highly recommended!
- Holly (10/5): - John, the host, was very welcoming and gave us detailed information about Dover and recommended various places to eat. It was a perfect location, close to Dover Castle, the White Cliffs, and the city center. Our room was spacious, clean, and comfortable.
- John (10/5): - Proprietor John, was excellent, helpful, great information
- Zhonghe (10/5): -
- Josef (10/5): -
- Perry (1/5): A total disaster - John, the concierge was very pleasant and helpful. The room was tiny, with a shower stall stuck in a corner and the toilet in a closet and sink in room. We have stayed in many places worldwide, and this was so unsatisfactory that we took a walk and found another room at about the same price that 50 times better. We just moved there. The location was not great and the place cramped beyond belief. We feel that should get our money back.
- John (10/5): - John the innkeeper was very helpful and charming and so courteous
- Noel (9/5): Superb -
- Anthony (6/5): - very basic but clean and very pleasant proprietor
- David (10/5): - It was very cute. Nothing fancy but very clean and John was a wonderful host.
- Ricardo (10/5): - Excelente propiedad
- Denise (9/5): I would recommend this very friendly, well appointed guest house. - It was comfortable. The room was bigger than expected. It was clean and made up each day. The teacakes were welcome!
John welcomed us and was available whenever we were around, wishing us good morning, asking about our day and generally being very friendly. He was knowledgeable about the area and very responsive prior to arrival. Parking can be a bit of a problem in this area. There is available space on the road, but it’s not guaranteed. There is also a car park behind the property, but is expensive during the day.(free at night) if parking is important to you, it may be an issue.
However, every thing we wanted to do was within walking distance, so when we finally got a spot, we didn’t have to move!
The parking won’t stop us rebooking this property though.
- Ming (10/5): Heart-warming - Usually I don’t post comments after I stay at a guest house/hotel/hostel, but for this one I just have to.
As Asian, when I’m in the UK, one thing that I feel a lot from the locals is that before they see me as a person, they see me as a foreigner. I could tell that they do not see me as “one of them”.
John never made me feel that why. He is a genuine person with a truly kind heart and whenever he sees me, he’s just happy to see me. He would chat about all sorts of things with me and it feels really nice to have a person to talk to as a solo traveler. Even though I’m quite young (literally just turned 20), John was never like “oh she’s quite young we probably don’t have any common language”.
Other than John being nice, the guest house itself is really nice too. The room is very clean, very comfortable, and very very pretty.
Also if you accidentally forget something in the guest house after you check out you can absolutely trust John for keeping it for you.
Also, the house is only 16 minutes away from Dover Priory (the train station), very convenient! Literally nothing.
- Karen (8/5): Very good - Very nice manager. Good location. Shower is in the bedroom.
- Davis (10/5): - Wonderful place. Clean, large room, fellow that runs the place is super nice and helpful
- Jayakrishnan (6/5): - Great location, close to everything. They have no parking, you have to figure it out yourself. Free and convenient overnight parking is available a stone's throw away. Building and room were a bit musty. Quite overpriced in my view for the amenities on offer; that was likely because it was a last-minute booking.
- Helen (10/5): - The proprietor is extremely personable and kind. I also loved the accommodations the room was large and well appointed.
- Ada (10/5): Lovely guest house - The place has a lovely warm English feel and John the concierge makes it very welcoming.
- David (10/5): - Very clean, very quaint, very cute. No lift but owner/mgr carried our bags up and down our flight of stairs. No parking. Cab had to drop us off and pu on the sidewalk. Highly recommend
- James (10/5): - St Martins Guest House is a great place to enjoy old England. My wife and I enjoyed visiting Dover, and John made it home. His knowledge and enthusiasm for this area made our trip. I highly recommend it.
- Igor (5/5): Passable -
- Lyla (10/5): - Very cute and comfortable room. Outstanding management. The gentleman that ran the hotel was very knowledgeable of the area and told us all about the local history. The hotel is walkable to the castle and the cruise port.
- James (10/5): - John the property manager was great. His knowledge of the area and history made our stay very enjoyable. Hotel is a page out of old English history. A pleasure to stay at a unique and historic hotel.
- David (8/5): Very good -
- Scott (10/5): - Just stayed one night before our cruise out of the port of Dover.
If you're looking for an authentic English experience in a vintage property this is for you.
We had absolutely no problems with the property and the host is marvelous.
He goes way out of his way to accommodate and help. He also arranged a taxi service for us and gave us information on what was nearby.
Just some basic information, the hotel is not air conditioned so if you're booking a summer trip that might be a factor. There are no elevators in the property and our room was on the third floor so you must be able to use stairs.
This was a former residence and so there is no lobby, sitting area, restaurant, bar etc on site. The room was quite comfortable it has a full size bed - separate bathroom and toilet. There is no fridge in the room. Its well kept but the building is hundreds of years old. The room door used a skeleton key.
We were looking for an authentic vintage English experience (and that was what we got) no real complaints -but this is not a hotel, if that's what your looking for.
Not a lot to see or do around the hotel except for the castle, there is a shopping center with some supermarkets.
The hotel is within walking to
Dover castle, but be aware it's a lot of walking and most of it is uphill and you need to be in good shape with sensible shoes.
Getting to the port of Dover requires a taxi it's only about a 5 to 10 minute drive 8 pounds. FYI there is no Uber or Lyft in Dover England.
- Colin (7/5): It was short and lovely. But for the price. I wouldn't recommend it. - Love the concierge. Very helpful and lovely person. The location is perfect. The bath was not cleaned well. It still had hair in the soap tray and on the doors. Room was too small for the price.
- Pavel (9/5): Superb -
- Marian (10/5): - Beautiful quaint guest house, hosted by the kind and very helpful John and his lovely wife who went above and beyond. John was helpful in sharing information about local attractions as well as nice places to eat. Really enjoyed a quiet weekend away at the coast. Must stay if you’re in Dover.
- Michael (10/5): - John is the perfect host, and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay
- Chris (8/5): - Close to the Castle. Free on street parking opposite the guest house. Large bedroom with a sitting area. It is dated, but clean and does the job. Convenient to walk into town. 5 stars for John who works there. Such a lovely, friendly guy.
- Carol (6/5): - The best thing about this property is its location. Its website lists it as a B and B, but there was no breakfast. The owner is not at all amenable yo early check-in or late check out, necessitating for us a 2 1/2 hour wait with no services at a cruise terminal.
Additionally, neither Kleenex nor shampoo was provided. Amenities were basic.
- Kenneth (10/5): Charming Guest House - We stayed in two rooms here for a night before joining our cruise and enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. It is close to the white cliffs of Dover and Dover castle and only a mile from the port. St Martins is very well located. John, the concierge was amazing and always wanted to please. As other reviews noted, he is very knowledgeable of the area. The rooms were very clean. As others have stated St. Martins is a guest house. Rooms are small and basic and there isn't any air conditioning. If those things are important to you you are better off booking a large hotel. We felt the positives of this charming place far outweighed any of that other stuff and inexpensive at about 100 pounds a night.
- Peter (7/5): John at reception was the absolute highlight of that stay. - John was an absolute professional, very friendly, very helpful, even taking the time and effort to look for accommodation in other towns /areas for the rest of the stay (outside Dover). John also gave me some aspirins and could answer any question I had. Really a great manager. Maybe a general issue in that part of the UK: many B&B's seem to have outdated equipment (shower, toilet, etc). Some modernization may become unavoidable soon. And due to the August bank holiday weekend, the rates were quite high (150 GBP or more), which is far beyond the usual price/quality ratio for a modest B&B room without breakfast.
- Tessa (10/5): Perfect - Perfect location for travelling to France.
- Brett (5/5): Passable -
- Jean (9/5): We had a lovely stay! -
- Bruce (8/5): Very comfortable, low stress stay. - John was extremely helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable.
- Olga (10/5): Exceptional -
- Robin (10/5): Best place in Dover - Fantastic location, interior and receptionist (!) I usually don‘t go for old houses but this one had a real charm.
- Jayne (10/5): John will go above and beyond to help. Gave great advice on where to eat. - Beautifully clean. Excellent host. Great for ferry Nothing
- Brian (10/5): - The guest house was as we expected it. Nice and clean, whoever painted it over the last couple of years did a really nice job. Well positioned the everything. The pub around the corner was good to visit for a drink. We were met by John when we arrived and found him delightful to talk to. Happy to provide advice about where to go and what to see, and just generally interested in us. For our travels we caught the #15 bus to Canterbury which was nice to visit, the cathedral was undergoing renovation work so after paying our entry fee we got our money back. Did the zodiac boat ride to view the white cliffs, simply wonderful. Visited the castle which was great. Thanks John for your advice to see the Bronze Age boat- they showed a video of how it was found and retrieved, we were very impressed. I’d recommend St Martins guest house!
- Susan (10/5): Fantastic and made us feel very special and welcome. - John the concierge was fantastic and caring with lots of information about Dover. The rooms were comfortable, clean and had everything we needed which were cleaned every day with fresh towels, sheets and crockery. The position in Dover was great. Sorry to leave. Nothing, as everything we needed was there for us and with a very kind concierge on hand.
- Kendra (10/5): - St. Martins Guest House was conveniently located within town and perfect for our stay in Dover. John the concierge was kind, helpful and shared his wealth of knowledge about the area and the local history. Our cruise ship was delayed for multiple days and John was able to accommodate us and saved us from having to find another place to stay in an already very full town. We would definitely stay here again! Thank you for all of your help!!
- Vicki (10/5): Our host, John is the best! - The best part about our stay was our host, John! He told us about the history of the area and recommended restaurants and a side trip to Canterbury which we didn’t have on our itinerary and was so glad we did! Thanks again John!!
- Bruce (10/5): - Great location, staff was super friendly and very helpful, would definitely stay again if we ever go back to Dover.
- Maria (9/5): Pleasant stay in the classic British interior in the centre of Dover - The guest house is located close to the Dover castle, seaside and the city centre. Our room was quite spacious, with a beamed ceiling, two beautiful windows with outside flower boxes and was furnished in the "old" style. The bed was excellent. We were warmly welcomed by the concierge John, who gave us a great introduction to the city's history. The shower's water pressure was a bit weak.
- Joe (8/5): - Lovely place. Great location
- Pamela (10/5): - John goes over and beyond to make sure everything is OK. From the pleased to meet you welcome he was there at every turn until the cherry wave goodbye. Invaluable personal service!
- herbert (6/5): - John was great to work with during our stay. There is no sitting space outside your room in case you arrive early or leave later and no food service option. Very close to Dover castle. Bed not that comfortable. Dated decor and the shower is literally in the room and not a separate bathroom.
- rodrigo (10/5): Maravilloso - Altamente recomendable, por calidad, confort y ubicación. La atención fue del más alto nivel.
- Sisai (10/5): John is very enthusiastic and friendly. Besides, the location is very good, and the room is comfy, clean. Would come b -
- Valerie (10/5): - Very friendly and helpful, great suggestions for area. Wonderful quiet place to stay. Clean
- Robin (7/5): Good - The host was very kind and helpful. The home was very clean. If you are mobile and healthy, you can easily walk to Dover Castle and the Cliffs of Dover from this location. Great pub right around the corner. The bathroom needs to be updated. Toilet is separate from the shower and sink. It's very awkward. The toilet door is broken. Multiple times, we got stuck. If one of us hadn't been in the room to open it from the outside, you could get locked in! Shower water pressure is very low. Decor is very tired. Owners should hire a decorator to make some updates. Our room was very cold. Took a long time to warm up to a tolerable temperature.
- Blanca (10/5): We'll repeat it! - Perfect location, quiet and clean hotel. Easy to park.
John, the Concierge, is who really makes the difference among other hotels. He was so helpful and gave us the best advices to visit Dover.
There were many places to visit, some of them we missed because we were just one day in Dover, so we'll come back at some point and for sure we'll choose again St Martins Guest House. Nothing
- Zsolt (8/5): Very good -
- Su (10/5): Exceptional - Room is clean and bright though it's over 200 years old.The rooms still feel comfortable and warm. And John is really kind and helpful. He told us a lot about Dover's history stories and recommended us a quite wonderful restaurant. It's the best thing that I chose this guest room and I am wishing to come back again! Nothing.
- Brian (10/5): Exceptional -
- Peter (10/5): - The concierge was very helpful. Bag dropoff prior to check-in was both quick and easy as well as convenient.
- ARD HENRY (10/5): - Brian, the property manager, is a great host…
- Daniel (10/5): Hope to return one day. - The host was extremely welcoming and helpful with excellent recommendations regarding restaurants and other attractions in the area, and my room was superbly comfortable. Highly recommended. Thank you! It was all good.
- Marian (3/5): Disappointing - John was charming and very helpful. Walking distance to town Centre and the castle but on a very steep hill. There was no breakfast just kettle with tea and coffee in the room. Very small shower in the corner of the room next to wash basin. Toilet enclosed in another corner. One night was enough and we would not book this again.
- Sandra (10/5): - Excellent location to walk to the Dover Castle and White Cliff. Also near the ferry docks. Easy walking distance to restaurants, grocery stores and coffee shops.
John, the manager, was absolute charm, courteous and helpful. Our room was very spacious and comfortable We loved it!!
- IHAB (10/5): - John was wonderful. Helpful. Simple clean efficient. Thank you.
- Anthony (8/5): Very good - Not available
- Marilynn (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sean (9/5): Superb -
- Shira (10/5): Exceptional -
- Andri (10/5): Exceptional - Usually, in a hotel review, you'd talk about things such as room size, cleanliness, etc. And don't get me wrong - all of these things were good too. But what really differentiates this hotel from others was John, the Concierge. He was incredibly helpful and very fun to talk to. Would gladly stay there again!
- David (10/5): - Simple accommodations, close to the port, easy to walk to find food
- Richard (10/5): Exceptional - John is so friendly, and he give us some story of the places and he showed us beautiful pictures in the area. What a magical place.
- Kris (9/5): A nice and cosy guesthose with an outstanding host on a perfect location - A very nice and cosy guesthouse with a very good, gentle and nice host. He had all kinds of interessting stories to tell about Dover and its history. The room itself was decotated as a classic English room with almost vintage furniture. Nevertheless everything was very clean and the room had a fresh smell.
The place was directly near the city centre but also very quiet. Shower and bed are very small for a guy who is 2 meter tall. For an accomodation like this, without breakfast, the price is pretty high. We have had better prices including breakfast. But we knew this beforehand so it is not realy a minus.
- Andrew (10/5): Excellent - Excellent location for ferry port, manager was helpful,
- John (10/5): A charming host and a charming guesthouse. - From the moment we arrived at St Martin’s John made us feel very welcome. He carried our very heavy bag up the stairs for us and gave us a potted history of Dover together with several suggestions for dinner. Not only that but he also booked an early morning taxi for us to ensure we were on time for our ferry. We were just sorry it was such a short stay.
Thank you John for being such a wonderful host. There wasn’t a thing we didn’t like.
- Roos (10/5): Exceptional -
- Stuart (8/5): Very good -
- Jane (7/5): lovely would go back - there was no breakfast included in the deal. Tea and coffee on tap if wanted in room
Jon the host was very helpful, he took our suitcase up to the room as we had arrived early and when we were able to check in he showed us to our room and pointed out where things were, gave us the keys. The bedding and towels were changed after just one night which i did not expect but clean sheets each night nice to get into nothing
it was close to all amenities and shops, eateries.
- Grossberg (9/5): Terrific - There was no air conditioning. The open window was sufficient
- Stefanie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Shaun (9/5): Superb -
- MICHAEL (10/5): Thank you John! - Great place. Classic English guest house. John the concierge was amazing.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Beautiful historic property in fantastic location. Host was wonderful, giving us lots of tips on local dining and activities along with information on the property history and a few historical stories of the area!
- Carl (10/5): - The caretaker/concierge was absolutely top notch! He is very hatdworking and attentive to all guests needs and questions.
- Jay (10/5): - Lovely guesthouse, John was very friendly and accommodating.
Would definitely stay again
- Michael (10/5): - Great location. John, the host, was great.
- F (8/5): Lovely stay A+ - A lovely stay while in Dover for work!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The concierge is kind and nice.
- Melanie (10/5): Excellent place to stay - Lovely room and comfy bed, very happy with the levels of cleanliness. Host was amazing, very friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable about the local area and it's history. Highly recommend to any visiting Dover to appreciate it's history and landscape.
- Olga (8/5): Sympa - Notre Hôte John a été vraiment charmant et aux petits soins pour nous.
Très bon service. La chambre etait spacieuse. Nous reviendrons sürement.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Enjoyed our stay at this lovely home within walking distance of the town center. John was so helpful and knowledgeable about Dover He helped us pin down taxi service as soon as he heard we were going on a cruise the next day. Without him, we would have had to wait until the taxi’s were free from taking passengers getting off the cruise. I definitely want to explore Dover in the future and would stay here again.
- Marcus (10/5): - John did an amazing job and is a stellar Innkeeper. We’ll Do e!!
- David (10/5): Warm welcome - John was great made us feel very welcome, warm and friendly!
- Jim (10/5): - Quick walk to town and restaurants/pubs. Very small room by US standards. Wonderful and helpful host with good information on local fare!
- LK (10/5): - If you want a modern fully equipped hotel with breakfast, a bar, and such, the Travelodge is just down the way, but I find these smaller hotels charming and much more pleasant. We stayed in two different rooms, one with a single bed, the other with two twins. Both were modest and small, but charming and comfortable. I love this part of Dover, below the castle, a short walk to the waterfront, the White Horse Inn, and Blake's of Dover. Your host and concierge is delightful and unfailingly helpful. In short, I unreservedly recommend St Martin's if you are looking for one night or several in a boutique hotel in Dover.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Good location, historical building. Amenities not great.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The only reason to stay here is its location and John, the concierge. He is wonderful, but the property is disappointing for the price. It's an expensive place and for the price I would expect breakfast. It doesn't have the greatest ambiance and is on a busy street with street noise until about 11:00pm. Getting to Dover Castle is about a 20 minute walk uphill and it's close to the town center, which was a plus. If you have a car, you'll have to find parking, because they have none. I probably wouldn't go back.
- DP (4/5): - Room was very small. The actual shower was in the room. The bed had only a box spring, no mattress. Very disappointing.
