Guest Reviews
- Annette (10/5): - Hosts very friendly and helpful. We had everything we needed and more besides. Lovely spot on the north coast of Scotland and very handy for the Gills Bay ferry to Orkney
- Harry (8/5): - A superb stay, the hosts could not have been better- went over and above.
Parking, facilities all good.
- Richard (8/5): A friendly, comfortable and well appointed B&B. - We felt very much at home straightaway from the hosts’ effusive welcome. The room was well appointed and comfortable with everything required. The shower was great and breakfast very good. Great to have ample, on site parking. All in all a really good overnight stay, highly recommended.
- Christian (10/5): Perfect for families with pets - Great hosts and great hotel, perfect for people with dogs
- John (6/5): - Breakfast was very good. The hosts were very personable and made every effort to meet our needs where possible. There was a very small fridge in the room. There was also a communal lounge .
The bathroom was very small with very little space to store toiletries etc.
The internet connection was slow and access appeared to be limited at times.
- Graeme (10/5): - This was just an overnight after driving up from Dornoch and getting on the ferry to Orkney at Gills Bay the next morning. However Eilean and Graeme greeted us in the parking area and helped us move into our room. Provided us with lots of info on their property and where to eat. Our room was very comfortable and breakfast in the morning had lots of variety and our choices were delicious.
- Sheena (10/5): - The warm welcome from Graeme and Eileen plus a very comfortable room and excellent breakfast with fresh berries made my stay at the Hawthornes!
- Richard (10/5): Parfait - Nous avons passé un excellent moment à The Hawtorns. Les propriétaires sont très sympathiques. Pleins de bons conseils et très serviables.
La chambre est grande, très confortable et très bien équipée.
Mention spéciale pour le petit déjeuner qui a été excellent.
Nous reviendrons très certainement.
- Brian (10/5): - Everything here is well thought out, it is obvious this couple have been doing this for a while. Amazing breakfast, very roomy and comfortable space. Excellent spot to stay and explore the area.
- Edward (10/5): - Lovely place with charming and hospitable hosts. The breakfast was excellent.
- Anne (10/5): - Proximity to ferry was perfect. Hosts were just lovely and checkin was very easy. Would definitely stay here again.

- steve (10/5): - The B&B was located very near the ferry to Orkney and the Mey Castle. Great accommodation. Friendly owner. Perfect stay!
- Mary (10/5): - The hosts were absolutely wonderful. We had to leave early in the morning and wouldn’t be able to have breakfast and they brought some nice items for us the night before that we could quickly eat. Location was good for our stay and is very close to Castle Mey which we visited.
- sylvester (10/5): - The hosts were excellent and breakfast was fresh and plentiful. Parking is plentiful. Do get supplies before arriving as there are no shops nearby. Great location, close to John o Groat and access to NC500.
- Paul (10/5): A great stay in a unique part of the world! - Lovely host, charming and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble and the property was well laid out with lots of thoughtful touches. Breakfast was great too.
- Susan (10/5): - The Hawthornes is a lovely rural B and B near the very northern tip of mainland Scotland. The garden is very attractive. The hosts are very sweet and accommodating. Our room was simple but very functional and quiet. Breakfast was ample, tasty, and made-to-order. The only minus about the inn is that the internet speed in that region is extremely slow, as our host explained to us.
- Michael (10/5): - After a warm and friendly welcome, we were shown our room and given all info required. Cleanliness and comfort ticked boxes. Everything you need provided. Breakfast lovely. Definitely recommend.

- Gillian (10/5): Good B&B, friendly owners - Good B&B. Very friendly owners, very eco-friendly. They rang a local restaurant for us to make a dinner reservation. Lots of little extras in the room, like a Nespresso machine and fridge. Good choice for breakfast, including smoked salmon. Gave us advice as to where to visit.
- Glennis (10/5): - Lovely accommodation within driving distance of ferries to Orkney restaurants and towns. Outstanding hosts who think of everything and provide a wonderful breakfast.

- Deborah (10/5): - Such a nice place to stay! We needed a place close to John O'Groats and this place was perfect. The hosts were so hospitable, my husband and I loved talking with them. The room was clean and comfy, and we had no issues with the room. The hosts even were willing to do a load of laundry for us which saved us hours from having to find a laundromat! We were so, so pleased with this place. Can't recommend it enough.
- Cynthia (10/5): - Very welcoming and accommodating hosts! Pleasant conversation and great suggestions for our trip! Extremely willing to make us as comfortable as possible. Room was well laid out with everything you need. House is very close to the Castle of Mey, Gill’s Bay Ferry and John O’Groats for some cheesy souvenirs. The Castle Arms was a great option for dinner, walking distance from the house. Our hosts even booked us a reservation prior to our arrival. One less thing for us to worry about! Comfortable place to lay your head and excellent hospitable hosts!

- Verified traveler (10/5): - The hosts Graeme & Eilean are so friendly & welcoming, their B&B is in immaculate condition with excellent facilities making this a great home away from home.
This is a truly pet friendly B&B with such thoughtful touches as a dog tag with the B&B’s details (in case your pup foes wandering) a dog bed and towel all left in the room for us arriving.
I cannot recommend their B&B highly enough!

Very clean and tidy with friendly hosts. Good breakfast with plenty of choice
- Emily (10/5): - Wonderful bed and breakfast with lovely, very accommodating hosts. Room was nice and big, breakfast was delicious - they really have thought of everything. Covid measures were excellent and we felt very comfortable during our stay. Don’t hesitate to stay here, really cannot fault a thing.
- Kim (10/5): Home away from home - This was the first B&B that we have ever stayed in so didn’t really know what to expect!
It really was a home away from home and were made to feel very welcome and comfortable.
The rooms are spacious and the beds cosy.
It’s very dog friendly, our dog was offered a bed and treats at breakfast time.
Overall a great stay, would return if we are in the area again.

The hosts were welcoming, friendly, helpful and very well informed on social distancing and had plenty of anti-COVID measures in place. The room was perfect - clean, warm and very comfortable. Breakfast was excellent and plentiful. Can definitely recommend a stay at The Hawthorns.
- Jes (10/5): - The Hawthorns Bed & Breakfast is absolutely lovely! Graeme and Eilean are wonderful and very accomodating. The room was spacious and very clean. The area is beautiful and peaceful. They are taking every measure to ensure safety for guests during the coronavirus pandemic. We will definitely come back here!

- Penny (10/5): - From the hosts being at the front door to welcome me, to the comfortable clean room, to the amazing breakfast and peaceful setting, my stay at The Hawthorns B & B was delightful. Would highly recommend it.
- Jennifer (10/5): An Excellent B&B near Thurso - We stayed 5 nights at The Hawthorns with our small dog. We were all made very welcome. The room was very comfortable and had everything we could possibly have wanted including a fridge. There was a dog bed, towel, bowl, Hawthorns dog tag; everything our dog could possibly want, including a welcome treat. Breakfasts were substantial and very good. We would definitely recommend. The Hawthorns is 15 mins east of Thurso on a very quiet road.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We like the helpful hosts . Host could tell us best things to do, they knew the weather patterns
- Verified traveler (10/5): - everything was excellent, host very welcoming, breakfast very good, room outstanding & really large, quiet
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very organised and easy. Thank you. Convenient for Orkney ferry
- Verified traveler (8/5): - A very friendly welcome. A lot of attention to detail to make us feel at home. No problem with early breakfast as we had to catch ferry to Orkney. Couldn't have done more for us.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Excellent accommodations and service - Near the beach, the Queen's Castle in Mey, and Her Majesty's gunmaker.
- Dave (10/5): A little gem on the north coast. - Just on the edge of the village of Mey stands the Hawthorns B & B, about 12 miles east of Thurso. The property is spotlessly clean and very well run. Unfortunately I forgot to get the names of the couple who own it but they were both lovely and very welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. My room was large, extremely comfortable and very well appointed. There was also a lovely guest lounge and dining room, again very comfortable and spotless. The breakfast was delicious and kept me going well into the afternoon before I ate again. Altogether I could not fault my stay there and will be looking to return in the spring for a longer stay.
- Elizabeth (10/5): Quiet peaceful countryside - Our hosts could not have done more to make us welcome
