Guest Reviews
- Brett (10/5): Excellent stay in an authentic and beautiful Ryokan. - What an impressive, authentic Ryokan. The art, gardens, objet de art, furniture were all lovely, and the host helpful and charming. The location has been overrun a bit by modernity, but it is still conveniently located. The downstairs bathroom was a bit of a challenge. The tight access and lack and un appealing immediate surrounds detract, and the Ryokan is a little cluttered with too many artworks, furniture pieces and objet de art. Less would make the space even more appealing.
- Joseph (10/5): - Beautiful. Lovingly furnished and decorated. Walking through the front door felt like stepping through a portal into a different world.
- Carolin (10/5): - Absolut alles!
Einfach perfekt. Wir kommen auf jedenfall wieder. Nichts!
- kaz54 (10/5): Matsuyama Ryokan with water features - Great host, special place, beautiful gardens with fish life and water The stairs to the bedroom were quite steep and whilst we were ok with it, may prove challenging for some.

- Kimberly (10/5): Charming stay in quiet area - It has so much personality and the best, most friendly innkeeper in the world. I really appreciated all the local information and recommendations. Excellent vibes over all . It's an beautiful but very old house (which we knew) and as with all traditional Japanese houses it was a bit on the chilly side since we were there in winter. The only other downside is that the bathroom is all the way downstairs if you need to make a trip in the middle of the night.
- Louise (10/5): Amazing traditional ryokan, beautifully decorated. Super friendly and helpful host. - The host was so friendly and took time to show us everything, give us information and have us some complimentary gifts and amenities. The entire place was so unique. Something to note - the toilet and washroom are on the ground floor and the bedroom is on the upper floor. However, we understand this is something about the property that can’t be changed. But it is worth noting if you are a guest who will frequent the toilet during the night or have difficulty climbing a steep staircase.

- Dudley (10/5): This ryokan provides a calm and tranquil space where you can really slow down and become lost in the peacefulness of it - Simply the best!
A highlight of our trip and an absolute privilege to have been able to stay. The owner’s love and care for the place is evident in every aspect; and his hospitality was also amazing: pick up from the station; welcome drink; refreshments & cakes. It is also situated in such a gorgeous little area…quiet streets, friendly neighbours and restaurants in walking distance. The gardens are so lovely to sit and look out on and the hot bath was also so wonderful. Nothing
- Tobias (10/5): Don't miss it. - The house is an amazing 100 year old ryokan. It is filled with a mixture of art objects and bric-a-brac. Then there are two miniature Japanese gardens that are totally beautiful. It is a magic place. I have never stayed in any place like it. Checkin at 16:00 is a bit late (but can be reduced with extra payment)
- Samuel (10/5): - Fantastic stay in a beautiful home. The ryokan is much bigger even than the pictures suggest. Our host was very welcoming and offered complimentary drinks throughout our stay.
- Olga (10/5): - If I could put 100 points, I would. This has been the most amazing property throughout 7 trips to Japan - you really feel that every corner and detail of ryokan is filled with love and such caring attention to details. The whole house is a meditative experience in itself where you could stay a week just exploring and enjoying it. Katsuhiro is a fantastic owner. Everything was perfect.
- Anna (10/5): - The host and the property are the most wonderful!
It was a comfortable accomodation with plenty of room to relax and spend time (you can even feed the koi in the ponds of the small gardens)
The vibes are immaculate and the town of Mitsu itself very cute, also Matsuyama is easily accesible through 2 train stations in the vicinity

- Cristina (10/5): Besonderer Aufenthalt mit außergewöhnlicher -
- Robert (9/5): Idyllisch & je komt ogen te kort - It was so beautifully decorated and loved the beautiful gardens & feeding the koi carps.
Very helpful & friendly owner.
Txs again for letting us stay in such a lovely place.
- Marley (10/5): Beautiful Retreat - The host was absolutely wonderful! The house was absolutely stunning, with so many beautiful items and lively fish pond! It was such a wonderful retreat even though we were out on long day trips and the futons were so comfortable! The host even drove us back to the ferry port which was so kind. Just be warned, our taxi driver struggled with finding the location of the house. However, well worth the struggle!
- Colin (10/5): Our favorite place we stayed in Japan! - In our 3+ week journey through Japan, this was hands-down our favorite place that we stayed. Katsuhiro is the kindest, nicest, most generous host and has maintained an incredible property full of life and character with one of the most impressive Japanese gardens. Great restaurants and izakayas around within walking distance. Stay here and make sure to get some Ehime mikan! Liked everything
- Paul (10/5): The soul of Artistic Japan - This was a unique stay. The owner is an artist in his soul and has created an environment that envelopes you in a the essence of Japan. There are two Japanese gardens complete with Koi fish you are invited to feed. There is a large living area besides the large bedroom that is yours to enjoy. The property is in the a quiet neighborhood with local restaurants within 3 or 4 blocks. Across the street is a manga library that you can explore. It’s all so gentle and accessible. I highly recommend you find this to answer your question as to what is Japan without the hype! Enjoy!! Stairs
- Luke (10/5): Exceptional -
- Alexander (10/5): Exceptional -
- Walker (10/5): - Amazing Place!!
- Steven (9/5): A charming and tranquil traditional Japanese house with beautiful gardens and lots of space. - It is an oasis of tranquility in this beautiful Japanese house. This is the place if you want to experience a traditional living space.
We especially enjoyed the spacious rooms (after generally finding Japanese hotel rooms very small) and the beautiful courtyard gardens with koi pond. Our stay during the rainy season made it even more atmospheric and magical.
There are so many interesting little touches and quirky features to enjoy, and thoughtful additions like sound systems in every space. The owner Katsuhiro was so generous and sweet and looked after us very well. He has created such a welcome environment that makes it very hard to leave the house! Our advice is forget about sightseeing and just enjoy the house and cute shops and cafes in the area.
Highly recommended. There were some bright lights in the garden and bathroom that we would have liked to control. For our personal taste there was a little too much furniture and too many pictures etc, but it didn’t detract from the beauty of the house.
- Xinqing (10/5): Stunning and quiet place with friendly host - One of the best hotel/ryokan I’ve stayed! The decoration of the entire place is amazing, with so many details. The place is renovated from a 100 year old house. It has the traditional Japanese houses charm but also clean and comfortable (with AC and other amenities). The garden is beautiful - you can just tell how much efforts the host has put into this house. The host is very nice and helpful, offered to pick us up and bring us to the airport, and even asked whether we needed umbrella when we were visiting Matsuyama. The whole place felt so calm and peaceful, I slept very well every night and woke up with natural sunshine feeling refreshed. Simply stunning and highly recommended. The surrounding neighborhoods is also very interesting to walk around with lots of good restaurants to offer. Remember to check out the Italian restaurant Flor and the taco place just down the street! Nothing
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Angus (10/5): Beautiful Ryokan and garden ! - Beautiful property and garden .... we had an amazing stay, and only wished it could be longer. Nothing.
- Gabriele (10/5): Very pleasant experience:) - I don’t know where to begin. When we first came, the host met us with a refreshment drink, which was delicious. We stayed alone in the whole ryokan, which was beautiful, everyting is put together, everything in its own place, everything where you need it to be, things in little boxes, baskets, decorative plates. It was beautiful. There was complementary bottled water, tea, coffee and japanese sweets as well as fruit, which were all very delicious. The location is also nice, a bit away from all the fuss of the city, but easy to reach. As we were about to leave, the host also made us a little present with a cute note on top, that was very nice of him. All things considered, it was worth the money, we had a very nice stay that not only met, but exceeded our expectations. We liked everything, just a little thing, there was no washing machine nor dryer, so you won’t be able to wash your clothes.
- Marilyn Nita (10/5): Unforgettable experience - My friend and I stayed for 1 night at Kominka Mitsuhama Ryokan in early November. We were very surprised by how much thought and effort was put into decorating this 100 year old house. It was truly an unforgettable experience staying there.
Our host was like a cherry on top of the whole experience. Even though we could only communicate in broken Japanese, he prepared English instructions for us so communication was not a problem. When we checked out, he even gave us a handwritten note and two souvenirs. We really appreciated his hospitality!
- Chris (10/5): Incredibly special and unique Japanese experience. - Being greeted by the host on arrival
- Sandra (8/5): We liked our stay and we’re able to immerse our 2 days stay the way the locals live. - The owner was a very nice person who was very proud of his property. He had alot of treasures & the surrounding gardens & water features were beautifully maintained. We found the stairs to the bedroom very steep and the bathroom was down the stairs and not near the bedroom.
- Liam (10/5): Exceptional - Katsuhiro's Ryokan is absolutely one of the nicest places I've been and nicest host I've met. The pictures speak for themselves absolutely gorgeous rooms with an Indonesian flair. Beautiful gardens with Koi. Katushiro was so gracious and took great care of myself and friends. Will definitely stay again.
- Man (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful property with long history but advanced furnitures
Warming welcome from the staff
- Ossi (10/5): Accommodation in a traditional Japanese house with decorations from Japan, Indonesia and the interio - The accommodation is special at a high level with attention to small details. Traditional Japanese accommodation in a special place like a Japanese nature reserve. At every glance, you meet a website design accessory. The host is exceptionally cordial and wants to help and take care of every detail. The bathroom and toilet are on a separate floor and the stairs are relatively narrow.
- Lierman (10/5): Exceptional - The ryokan was impeccably decorated with beautiful Japanese gardens and ponds and gorgeous wood furniture and all kinds of art and beautiful items to view and/or purchase. The host was so welcoming and accommodating and thoughtful. It was truly an escape to a wonderland!
- Svea (10/5): fantastic stay in original old Japanese house - very nice authentic Japanese old house - only one large guest room in first floor with tatami mats and futon, so you have a lot of space, really fantastic small garden especially when illuminated during night, very friendly owner, who has really thought of everything one may need to feel comfortable :-) not suited for people who cannot climb a narrow staircase, bathroom and toilet are for the room only however downstairs on ground level
- Alexandra (10/5): - The host, Katsuhiro-san, is very kind and friendly! He went above and beyond to help us during our stay and had lots of great local recommendations. Thank you so much!!
- Steve (10/5): - It was a very comfortable stay in a very unique building.
The owners were very welcoming and kind.
