- catherine (10/5): - Charming! I chose it for an overnight to break up our drive to the Porcupine Mountains. After we arrived, I realized that Birch Lodge IS the destination! Our downstairs bedroom, parlor and bathroom were very spacious. The porch reminded me of the Grand Hotel on Mackinaw Island! Bring food as the eateries in the village are lame. I was hoping for whitefish at McGowan's but it was closed and looks like its for sale.

- Jeannine (10/5): - This historic charming hotel/house and motel was beautifully renovated and displayed photos and information regarding it's history everywhere you looked. It has a stunning view of Trout lake with a gorgeous front porch, private beach and boats for fishing. It felt like we went back in time. Our hosts were warm and wonderful and full of helpful information. With drives to Whitefish Point and Tahquamenon Falls only 30ish minutes away, it's a perfect home base to relax and explore the UP, or stay on the property and chill. We fell in love with this hotel and will be back again. J & R
- Annelise (10/5): Quiet Getaway - We had the corner King room in the lodge and it was beautiful. We did not have view of lake but we enjoyed sitting out on the large porch in rockers with our wine enjoying sunset over the lake. Use of kayaks a plus and the fire pit was perfect on a chilly night. You should know there is no elevator in the lodge but you will always get assistance with the bags if you need it. Also there is no TV in the lodge rooms but we did not miss it.

My party felt like it was camping without a tent. (We grew up camping, but do to our age we prefer beds). You can day trip or relax on the property. Staff is friendly and helpful.

- Wendy (10/5): - Very unique lake front property. Historic lodge interior restoration was very tastefully done. The motel, where we stayed, is a step back in time. Motel rooms, done in their original midcentury modern decor, were spacious, comfortable and clean. Some of the outdoor amenities includes kayaks, fire pit, corn hole game, private beach area and nature trail. We appreciated the host’s call on the day of check in, giving us check in info and dining options. We enjoyed our stay and would stay again!
- Charles (10/5): Stay here!!!!! - My boyfriend and I stayed at this hotel for 5 nights and absolutely loved it. The hardwood floors, history, friendly people, and views were incredible and felt homey. We’re from Ann Arbor area and couldn’t recommend enough!!!

The view was lovely on trout lake and it was a great location to stay when heading to Tahquamenon falls after a few days on Mackinaw island. We loved the light breakfast provided too.

Very considerate based on the dining options around here being limited after 7pm. The place is amazing. Rooms are incredible. We took the row boat and kayak out on the lake and then made a fire in the pit. Jim brought out some premade s’mores packs with sticks. Just an amazing and outstanding place. Would highly recommend staying here.
- Cynthia (6/5): - This is a nicely unique hotel that steps you back in time. Its very peaceful and a great place to reset from a busy life. The caretakers we nice but seemed overworked. Jim was very friendly and accomodating but his wife seemed frazzled. I would have liked to see a few more ammenities offered. Their breakfast was extremely basic. Some afternoon cookies or evening popcorn to bring a social aspect to the guests would have added a bit of charm.

- Mercedes (10/5): - Beautiful restful lake view property, less than 90minutes drive to Pictured Rocks and Tahquamenon Falls. Small town center had convenient, market restaurants, and a gas station with delicious ice cream. The owner and staff were gracious and accommodating. The continental breakfast with yogurt option was good; however, if you need more protein or something more substantial, bring in or go out to eat. Free canoe and kayak rentals, a walking path, and a fire pit make for a lovely lake life experience. Thank you,
- Donald (10/5): - Highly recommend the Birch Lodge. Property is exactly as advertised in a quiet and peaceful location. Rooms were very clean as is the main lodge where they serve a continental breakfast including freshly baked muffins. We had a retro room with 2 comfortable beds and a picture window looking out on Trout Lake. A nice change from the more commercial hotels.

The next morning, however, a woman rudely reprimanded me for accidentally and unknowingly dropping some crumbs in the main lodge. My apology was met with further rudeness. 5-stars otherwise.

- Janell (2/5): - I DO NOT RECOMMEND this hotel/motel. Beautiful location on the lake with very dated motel. My problem is that the room shower/tub combo had no water pressure. The very slight shower flow wasn’t enough to sustain a shower and I ended up using a 6oz cup to catch the drizzle from the tub spout, many times just to get the shampoo out of my hair, and to pour cups of water over me to bathe. I could use only a drizzle of hot water because if I turned on the cold to increase water pressure the hot water was non existent and left just freezing cold water. The heater in the bath didn’t work so I was soapy, slightly wet and freezing with a head full of shampoo. No phone in the room to call the front desk. When I told the desk staff ( owner?) in the morning there was only a “ sorry, we didn’t know” with no offer to make it right ( refund/discount/credit). Someone had to know - unless they don’t clean the tub. The hot/cold knobs were loose and it was hard to get the water on in the first place. Then it took a while to figure out how to get the water from the spout to the shower head, which I was not too bothered by. But when the slow drop of shower stopped and left only a trickle from the actual spout, I was very upset. Worst experience in a hotel/ lodge ever. Yet no offer to make the awful experience right.

I am also very tired of the cookie cutter large chain hotels & prefer to give my travel dollars to small business owners so the Historic Birch Lodge fit the bill. Our room was a bit small but the Hotel itself and the surrounding area was beautiful. My husband and I had a wonderful stay here and would definitely recommend.
- ????? (6/5): - This place is great for spending 1-2 days in nature. Very clean rooms. It was surprisingly clean. You can take a boat and sail on the lake, there is a private beach and a fire pit. But it is an old house and old furniture. For me it was inconvenient, I do not like old furniture in the room. Although this hotel is unique because of all these antiques. There is no normal table and chairs in the room to drink coffee or eat. The owner is a very nice person who will help to solve any problems. But his assistant is rude and not welcoming. She should learn manners or not talk to people at all.

Our room was very spacious and clean, and the lodge had several indoor and outdoor areas where guests can relax outside of their room. We were there for only one night, and we were sad to leave. We will be returning.
- Harsh (10/5): Hidden gem in Michigan - One of the best motel and lodge we have ever stayed. Management was very good as he provided late check in option after closing time. Breakfast was limited but yes definitely they serve coffee and fresh baked muffins. Location was superb

- Bethany (10/5): - Our stay at the Birch Lodge exceeded every expectation! This beautifully maintained property has every thoughtful detail you could possibly need -- beautiful rooms decorated with historical photos from the property, comfortable beds and furniture, a well-appointed en suite with the fluffiest towels, a small refrigerator and all the tools for a perfect cocktail. There are books, games, paddleboards, kayaks, walking trails, fire pits and many more thoughtful amenities, all complimentary to enjoy. So many places to sit and read or enjoy the sunset. Breakfast each day was lovely, and the morning of our bike race our host went above and beyond to make sure we had plenty of protein for our ride, whipping up a couple yogurt parfaits. My only regret is that we didn't stay longer! Be sure to love on Jack the wonder dog when you visit -- he's a special guy!

They are renovating an extremely old (1912) interesting, historical building. And doing such a beautiful job. It’s calm, clean, quiet and welcoming. JUST PERFECT

Curtains didn’t close all the way and don’t like the feeling of someone being able to see in. There was also a dead moth in the swimsuit artwork that just sticks in my mind. Wonder if cohesion could be made from front office “home” to the motel units?? Such different decor/feel to design.

The owner has been so friendly both times we have stayed and is very knowledgeable on the area and history of the lodge. I highly recommend this lodge for anyone looking to unplug and connect with nature. Dining options are limited in town and everything closes early, so it’s important to plan ahead.

Enjoyed walking the gorgeous property, the private sandy beach, making smores by the firepit, and mingling with other couples. My husband took the row boat onto the lake to fish! It's a great stay if you want to get away and truly RELAX! No Tv's but there is Wifi. Great if you want to unplug. We had the"fishing room #3" updated, clean and super comfortable bed and quiet sleep! Coffee, tea, muffins and danish served in the morning! Truly was a great addition to our adventure in UP! Unforgettable experience the staff and their dog are so friendly and accommodating!!! We will be going back soon!!
- ZSUZSANNA (10/5): a True Hidden gem - This is a beautiful historic building lovingly restored and maintained. Quiet and quaint, with a terrace overlooking the tranquil Trout Lake. We did raw a boat each evening we were there. Met the owners, lovely couple. They provide a nice coffee and muffins in the morning, although I was longing for some eggs. Oh well, it was nearly perfect.

- John (10/5): Late Summer Getaway - Welcome to the historic Birch Lodge Resort, the place we like to call the Mini Grand Hotel (without the fudge!). Step back in time to your choice of 1915 elegance, or 1960 retro Motel living. The lake is beautiful, the fishing is great. Mostly it is a perfect place to relax and unwind. Enjoy the banter around the campfire and the light Continental breakfast in the Grand dining area.
- Brandon (10/5): - This was such a gem! I stayed in the motel and my view was of Trout Lake. There were little snacks and a couple bottled waters in my room upon arrival. It’s contactless check-in, and I received a phone call the day of stating which room I would be in. My motel room had beautiful decor that reminded me of the 40s-50s and was super clean. I did not shower because I was unsure of the water quality. The lodge looks beautiful inside and they serve a little continental breakfast with muffins and an amazing coffee cake. Coffee was okay, but I didn’t stay for the coffee. Loved how close this was to the falls and whitefish point. There’s a couple restaurants that get great reviews nearby. Buckhorn Bar has the best burger and fries around. I’ll be back for sure.

It was a little dated and had that on the lake smell, it is on a lake so that can be expected. It’s not a bad thing just wanted to mention it. The lake view is amazing from the rocking chairs on the large front porch of the main house. I would definitely go back and stay here. I might try a room in the main house because they look really nice when they let me look at one.

I wish we had known there is one place to eat in town, and it doesn’t stay open late. This being said a microwave should have been an option. All in all it is a lovely lodge.

What would be nice is a microwave maybe in the dining room so if the local restaurants are not open, buying a pastie or something and being able to heat it up would be a nice convenience. There is not a lot of choices to eat close by.

- Rhonda (10/5): - The Birch lodge is old and very beautiful. Only problem was that we stayed in the #10 Fishing room, second Floor and the floor was very slanted causing my husband having a hard time staying on his side of the bed. Also the bed was very soft. Very all a lovely place to stay!
- steven (8/5): - Very peaceful and quiet! Great place to “get away from it all.” Room was clean and comfortable. Old building charm, while surprisingly quiet. Could use more water pressure but fixtures were fairly new. Very REMOTE location. No tv and minimal phone/internet signal, which wasn’t a problem for me (was a nice break). Bring food/snacks as closest grocery store is over 35 minutes away. One small convenience store & one local pub/restaurant (which was pretty good). All in all, it is what I expected and a very relaxing stay. The history of the building, which the host likes to share, is rather interesting and adds to its charm. Would definitely consider staying here again if in the area.
- Kelli (10/5): - Birch Lodge was perfect for our stay in the UP. It is an hour or less to Taquamenon, Whitfish point, Soo Locks, Mackinaw island and both Lake Superior and Michigan. We loved the convenience of having row boats and kayaks on the property for a quick fishing trip on Trout Lake. It was peaceful sitting on the porch and by the fire in the evenings. The history of the hotel adds to the charm. The modern upgrades to the hotel and the coffee ready in the mornings made us feel at home.
