Guest Reviews
- Graham (4/5): - Friendly and helpful bar staff. Bar/restaurant area in a nice building. Accommodation could be better.
- Craig (10/5): - Pros - quick check in , lots of parking, lovely clean room, big bed, good tea tray, a bath rather than a shower
Cons - could hear music from pub (might just be me being an old git)
- Michael (10/5): - Excellent staff in a very interested building. Great beer and breakfast
- Max (10/5): - Beautiful pub. Nice rooms, comfortable beds and quiet.
- Jackie (6/5): - Pub and food was nice. Rooms were dated and the shower was hot and cold.
- Adam (10/5): Lovely, quiet escape, a stones throw from the city - Check in was straightforward enough at the bar of The Keelman itself, given the option to add breakfast on the glasshouse the morning after too. They then walked us the short distance to our room (in the lodge section). Nice clean room, clean towels and bed sheets etc. bathroom clean and tidy. Only slight niggle would be the dust on the light fitting (but that's me being picky). Had a good night's sleep, nothing to fault them on. Surroundings are great, nice big outdoor beer garden with plenty of seating and shade. Dog friendly with water facilities and tasty beer! There's a riverside walk through the park which if followed takes you to Hadrian's Wall ~1hr walk. We booked this over any city centre accommodation due to it being quieter and much better value even factoring in taxi fare to and from the city centre.
- Paul (8/5): - Considering its attached to a busy pub, reasonably quiet and nice accommodation in a separate building of bungalows.
- Colin (10/5): Weekend getaway - Great 3 night stay at the Keelman. Check in nice and easy, staff friendly and very helpful. Room was good, big enough for us, and had all we needed, bed comfortable, shower really good, clean and tidy. (Maybe could do with a fridge) the surroundings were very nice, a short walk to the Riverside park. Bar and restaurant were lovely, and nice outside sitting area. Food and beers excellent, especially the Prince Bishop, would definitely stay here again
- Philip (8/5): atmospheric Keelman & Big Lamp Brewery - Lovely setting and excellent environment for exploring the walks and cycle paths along the banks of the Tyne. the Keelman has a vibrant atmosphere with lots of local families and other visitors. we have stayed here several times and will not hesitate to return in future.
- Kate (8/5): - While the room itself was a bit dated, the connecting brew pub had lots of outdoor seating and good food options. Staff were friendly and helpful.
- Gareth (8/5): - Lovely staff, pub was great.
Really good location for walking/cycling along the river Tyne.
- steve (10/5): - From arrival we were really impressed with this place.
The lady greeting us and showing us to our room, was lovely and made us feel welcome from the outset.
I’m not sure if this lady is the owner, but she was always busy and appeared to show genuine concern that guests needs were being taken care of.
Room was large and comfortable, with all amenities required.
Attached bar/ restaurant was comfortable and served a range of well priced meals and drinks.
We didn’t use it, but the outside dining area looked lovely.
- Les (8/5): - The service was very good and the room was clean.
- Joye (10/5): - The staff are very hospitable and professional. We had an easy check in and the rooms were lovely. Dinner and breakfast were top notch! We were able to get a good recommendation for Hadrians Haulers as well. Thank you it was a delightful experience.
- Trevor (10/5): Superb venue - Superb venue. Locally brewed beers in a great setting. Good food, good value.
- Ronn (8/5): - Nice facilities friendly staff.
- Jonathan (4/5): - Was extremely disappointed to find there was no WiFi in the room I enquired at the bar to be told that it didn’t reach as far as the room but I was welcome to work in the bar area. Not ideal for working or streaming considering the room info said there was WiFi.
- Andrew (10/5): Nice little place with plenty of parking - Lovely place to stay
- Lynette (2/5): Poor poor poor - No kettle, tv not working, 7:30am was too early for breakfast and not 1 member of staff checked to see how my stay was or explain what yo do in emergency afyer 1pm when i was told mo one woild be on site.
- Charlotte (10/5): Great place to stay! - The Keelman is in a lovely spot by the Tyne. The room was spacious, clean and comfortable. The refreshments were great and very well received after a long walk! Food at the pub was also very nice.
- John (10/5): - Three 50 lads enjoyed a night at brewery here and then a night out in the toon. Great size room for 3 and for price was great value! Full English Breakfast was ok but I’d say a tad pricey. Staff in bar were fab.
- Jason (10/5): A very restful stay and a great breakfast - Outstanding hospitality. My room was clean and comfortable and quiet - everything I needed. The hostess was very helpful with checking in.
Breakfast was delicious and fulling with plenty of coffee to start the day.
Additionally, I forget my phone charger and by prior night's lodging. The hostess was kind enough to track down a charger from the staff and charge up my phone to get me through the day. Thank you!!
Great Hotel, Great Staff, and Great Food!
- Clare (6/5): - Comfortable & convenient stay for an early flight from Newcastle. Property very noisy — doors bang, walls not very thick to dampen sound. Room dusty/cobwebs, hairs in bathroom, just looking a little tired. No staff overnight & nowhere to deposit room key out of hours. On site pub very good & plenty of parking. Pricey for what it offered, but comfortable enough.
- mark (10/5): - Nice place to stay
- Lucie (8/5): - Fabulous staff made us very welcome
- Bruce (6/5): - Facilities were fine but just average. Only complaint I have they advertise fast WIFI, but it comes from the pub which is approx. 100 yards away, so the signal does not reach. This was particularly annoying as I had work to do and booked on the premise of fast WIFI.
- Jon Justin (8/5): Great for Newcastle Airport - Quality Beers - Very attentive, enthusiatic team running check ins and the bar/kitchen. Rooms are a little tired, but the location is great. Huge courtyard and plenty of indoor seating for dining/drinking. Beer battered Fish and Chips highly recommended with a pint of Prince Bishop. Food, Beers and accommodation all very good value.
- Joanne (10/5): - Lovely big room, very clean with TV and tea making facilities. The property is set in wooded grounds which are very pretty. I believe there is a footpath close by so good for walks. We didn't eat here but the menu looked varied with something for everyone.
- George (10/5): Great place, great staff - The staff are wonderful and friendly, and so are the other patrons. The place itself feels fancy but not snooty.
- Mia (10/5): - Excellent accommodation for the price, staff very helpful, would recommend the place.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Made to feel so welcome - Staff were amazing and accommodated my late arrival and still made time to make me feel very welcome.
Room was spotless, had everything I needed, quiet comfy enough bed and amazing shower. Rooms could do with a refurb but reflected in price.
- Michael (6/5): Good location. Good value. - Great friendly staff. Large room in a group of low level challet style efforts. Rather gloomy but quite large. Bath with shower over. Excellent WiFi.
Wonderful evening meal (nut roast) but breakfast was pretty abysmal for the money. Small choice of cardboard packed in cardboard by Mr Kellogg. Some choice of cooked. I had vegetarian and it was awful. Totally overcooked. The poached egg was like hard boiled and, judging by the size of the thing, it must have been laid by a member of the crow family, not a chicken.
The Big Lamp is situated beside the Tyne and it's a very short walk to the river bank. There is an excellent level, traffic free path all the way to the next village passing the birth place of Stevenson of the Rocket fame.
- Anthony (10/5): Simply the best - Great accom and great beer. B’fast was 10/10 as well. Fantastic for find - we will be back. Great value for money.
- Michael (6/5): - Easy to access the city with car.
- Laura (10/5): - Staff were very friendly and helpful. Room was clean, comfortable and spacious if a bit dated. Food was lovely and service was great. Only criticism I have is that we had a triple room but there were only two mugs and two tumbler glasses.
- Carol (10/5): - Lovely hotel with incredibly friendly staff
- Chris (10/5): - We had a one night stay for a family occasion.
Easy to get to , warm welcome and a lovely room which is clean well kept. Fantastic breakfast with all the trimmings
- michael (10/5): - Great place by the river. Excellent for walking and outdoor s
- Aileen (10/5): Great base for Hadrians Wall - I was in the area to do a trail run and chose the Keelman as it was convenient to Hexham and good value. The kitchen does close very early (7.30!) so I missed dinner on the first night and had to get a takeaway but I made sure I was there in time the second night and the food was great.
The room was comfortable. I was surprised and pleased that there was a housekeeping service on my second day. Most places skimp on this since Covid so it's nice to stay somewhere that is keeping standards up.
The staff were all really friendly.
And I enjoyed tasting the beers from the Big Lamp brewery!
- Eric (4/5): - Pubic
Hair in the bath, no heating or spare blankets freezing
All night couldn’t sleep. Wasn’t able to contact anyone
- Michael (10/5): Great little spot - Fantastic location and friendly staff. Rooms are comfortable and clean. Breakfast is great with a few hot choices and continental. Dinner was superb
- John (8/5): - A very pleasant stay. The staff were friendly and helpful. A very pleasant area. I had my dog with me and it was straight out of the door and a few yards to walk along the riverside. The room was warm and clean with good Wi-Fi. A kettle in the room with tea and coffee. 50 yds to the restaurant and bar with really good ales. only negative was the tables tops in the bar/restaurant were very sticky as with most bars. The breakfast was excellent, the evening meal selection was a bit limited and I thought a bit pricey, although I haven't dined out for quite a while.
- Philip (10/5): - Stayed here on many occasions, never disappointed.
- John (10/5): A stunning property. - We had such a wonderful stay at Keelman. What a stunning property with amazing customer service. We would highly recommend this unforgettable quaint location.
- nigel (6/5): - Room was ok. Big enough. Trouble was room was cold and this made the bedding feel very damp. Radiator didnt seem to work. Spoiled the stay.
- Philip (10/5): - Friendly welcome, have stayed here several times in the past, never been disappointed. Breakfast very good. Staff most obliging.
- Keith (10/5): Great Stay - Brilliant service from the minute I arrived, comfortable and spacious room - could use a little TLC in some areas but nothing major. Food in the evening and breakfast was very good. Will happily stay again
- gavin (8/5): - I loved room 10 perfect for a single traveller and a bath and shower option was a delight instead of only shower !
Bed comfortable good pillows and nice size of tv !
My supper was basic as reduced menu as staff issues
It wasn’t a stottie it was a bun !
The roast beef was tough as leather and taste less !
Gravy was packet
Fries decent
Asked for horseradish and it was very mild !
I didn’t complain as I was starving ! but if that’s the best you can do maybe just offer crisps and nuts
My drink was perfect soda lime and bitters :)
Breakfast was excellent arranged nice on plate and all at good temp !
The cold table was fit for purpose ! Coffee great
The server was fun and a credit to you !
I loved the property BUT I won’t be rushing back to eat the roast beef stottie !
- Nick (10/5): - Very comfortable room situated a little way from the pub ensuring an undisturbed nights sleep.
- GINA (10/5): - Excellent.
- ELISE (8/5): - Lovely location and very convenient having the pub nearby. Excellent breakfast. Rooms are a decent size but I do think need some TLC, particularly the bathroom. The rooms are in a separate building a short walk away from the pub.
- Tony (10/5): - Nice place, comfortable room and excellent service. Reasonably priced meals.*****
- Michael (10/5): Absolutely brilliant place - Absolutely stunning place, great home cooked pub food and good solid selection of ales and drinks.
Dinner was excellent and breakfast top notch. The service and care given by all staff was fantastic, even the kitchen porter helped out with check in.
Room was clean, comfortable and spacious lodge 5 was lovely.
I can't wait to come back to this place.
- David (4/5): - Very uncomfortable stay in room 10, the heating was luke warm at best.
There is a light outside of room 10 which is uncomfortable to sleep with because its on all night.
Limited lighting to your car, no info about meals at the pub.
We were told the restaurant closed at 7.30pm.
We had very little info about breakfast, just told it was available til 8.30am.
Obviously very dissatisfied with the experience.
There are much better places.
- Paul (8/5): Spacious - Very nice location close to the Tyne. Spacious rooms and very clean. Only negative comment is that the double mattress was uncomfortable. You could fell every spring and hear all the springs creak each time you turned over.
- Aubrey (10/5): Hotel - Great place
- Susan (6/5): Keelman lodge stay - Nov 2022 - We had a triple room in the original part of the hotel - the room was clean but clearly needed a “deep clean” and fixtures & fittings need updating. The bar was welcoming and the beers good! Staff very friendly, helpful and welcoming. The only meal we had was breakfast - there was a good variety of cereals, yogurts, croissants, juices etc however hot breakfasts were a little disappointing.
Having had a great stay in the newer part of the hotel previously (before Covid) this stay was slightly underwhelming.
- PHILIP (10/5): - Another welcoming visit, great location and convenient for walks & cycle rides & visiting Hadrians Wall sites.
- Philip (10/5): Another great night at the Keelman! - My second visit to The Keelman and Big Lamp Brewery. Will be returning in October with my wife. Excellent location adjacent to country park and Hadrian's Wall path. Enjoyed a bike ride along the north bank of the Tyne as far as The Points Bridge. Comfortable place to stay with good food menu ;~ can totally recommend the'Keelman Stack'!!
- COLIN (10/5): Keelman is an ideal facility - Really comfortable and friendly visit.
Staff are excellent. Room s are comfortable.
Great value for money.
Location is ideal for exploring Newcastle area.
- Peter C (10/5): - Excellent location, friendly and helpful staff, great food and drinks, great atmosphere inside the pub and also outside on the patio.
Wifi did not work in the guest room.
- John (10/5): - Just one word fantastic
- andrew william (6/5): - The windows in need of cleaning otherwise the room was well appointed and clean and fresh
- Fiona M (10/5): A great get-away near Newcastle - Very friendly, efficient staff. Nice facility
- Paul (8/5): Passing through - Large room, very comfortable bed, very friendly staff. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious. Right on Hadrian's Wall path, excellent facility.
- PHILIP (10/5): First visit to Keelman & Big Lamp - My first visit to the Keelman & Big Lamp. Excellent all round. Staff superb, friendly & efficient with a good welcome on arrival. Nice atmosphere in a lovely woodland setting with nearby country park. Great to hear Dawn Chorus and see wildlife around. Evening meal & breakfast were superb. Have already booked another visit!
- Janine (8/5): - Good location for Newcastle and not bad for Sunderland either. We were attending a gig at the Stadium of Light and it was about 40 mins drive. Good breakfast.
- Christine (10/5): - Thank you for all the staff who helped my family to have such a lovely reunion
- Roger (10/5): - Lovely pub/B&B siuated near to the river and park. Clean quiet room with helpful staff. Id highly tecommend.
- K R (8/5): - Great and lovely stay perfect for the trip
- Gordon (10/5): Great place, ample parking, outstanding breakfast - Having stayed here before we knew that it would be good and were not disappointed. Good location being very quiet and yet not far from Newcastle and Gateshead etc. Very comfortable accommodation with high quality furniture and fittings. The substantial breakfast was well cooked from quality ingredients. The staff as ever were outstanding, They were friendly, efficient, and created a warm friendly atmosphere. While going out of their way to help. The restaurant and pub on the same site are a bonus if required.
- David (10/5): A brilliant choice - Very helpful and friendly staff. Room clean and warm. Very quiet, loved the location next to the riverside park.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The staff were all friendly and helpful.
Breakfasts were excellent though struggled to eat it all.
Did find that the bathroom in our lodge was in need of a revamp, but it was functional.
the rest of the room was warm , clean and comfortable.
- Phillip (10/5): - Good
- James (10/5): Friendly welcome great beer. - First night stop on Hadrian's Wall walk and had a friendly welcome.
Enjoyed good meal in Nice surroundings - and the house beer wasn't bad either!
Filling breakfast to set us on our way for day 2.
- Jordan (8/5): The Keelman - I had a very comfortable night at the Keelman. A comfortable, quiet room, and a nice pub for dinner and breakfast. Just what a walker wants at the end of a long day.
- Carolyn (10/5): - My last night on the coast to coast walk so I was looking forward to a good sleep, bath and food...and it didn't disappoint, thoroughly recommend.
- Diana (8/5): - The Keelnan Lodge was the ideal place to stay for my trip, it was easy to find, had plenty of parking and made a good base for touring around the area. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful.
- david (10/5): - Couldn't have friendly and helpfull hosts
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Their postcode had changed so the one I used (supplied by Expedia) took me to the wrong destination. The staff helped me find the correct destination
Fire alarm went off about 7:30am on the day of departure. False alarm.
Apparently this happens more often than should be expected
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great accomodation - Great accomodation just outside city centre.. great value..lovely attentive staff. Only negative was room smelled a little musty :)
