- phillip (4/5): Staff were good but I couldn’t recommend it - Staff were friendly food and drink were good and well priced Run down and not that clean the place was up for sale luckily we were only staying one night room smelt damp and was not clean

- Tommy (8/5): I was pleasantly surprised by this property. The photos didn’t do it justice, but in person it’s full of charm and chara - I was pleasantly surprised by this property. When I first booked, the photos didn’t really do it justice, it looked a bit worn and almost abandoned. However, once you’re there in person, you really begin to appreciate it. The building is very old, but that’s part of its charm, it has a lot of character, which we absolutely loved. One of the highlights for us was the bar area, especially the back section with the fire, it was incredibly cosy and inviting. Nothing really i didn’t like only we didn’t stay another nighr
- Chris (7/5): Loved it - Very friendly staff, great location and good value for money
- Brigid (4/5): - Breakfast was good. Room was sparse.
- Gillian (10/5): I would visit again when my broken ankle is better but would need more space either side of the bed - Value for money I couldn’t get into bed from the side I had to crawl up from the bottom
- Barry (7/5): Wonderful potential for new owners / operators. - Very warm welcome, the owner is obviously getting to the end of her ownership of the business which is in need of heavy investment and massive renovation. Even saying that it was very pleasant, relaxing stay with a freshly cooked breakfast that went down a treat. The bedrooms and en-suites need lots of TLC, as does the property in general. Bar prices are way out of touch and far too cheap.
- Jane (9/5): - Lovely traditional old pub and bed and breakfast. Some quirky features and no surplus cushions on the beds. Lovely food and such good value. This suited us perfectly so nothing not to like, even the sloping floor

- Louise1610 (8/5): Pleasant 1 night stay, good sized room with lovely breakfast at good price - Good sized room with private shower and toilet. Dog friendly establishment and we could even have the dogs with us at breakfast which was great. Lovely cooked breakfast. Price was good for a 1 night stay with breakfast included. Friendly staff. Easy to check in and out. Locks on the bedroom doors. The mattress was a bit unusual with us both rolling in towards the middle. It wasn't uncomfortable as such but just the centre of it was quite a bit lower so make sure you're good friends with whoever you share the bed with! There was a fair bit of damp/mould around the top of the shower but with the presumed age of the building, it isn't exactly unusual and for a one night stay where we didn't need to use it anyway, I wasn't that bothered. They were the only reasons for less than a 10 scoring.
- Sally (8/5): We were only sleeping there - The breakfast was delicious. I chose what items I wanted from the cooked breakfast menu (as told by the lady cooking it), and it was lovely and hot. The dinner and dessert were a great price, and my husband enjoyed the cheap beer.
We had our dog with us, and she was allowed in the dining room, pub, and of course our room. The shower.... didn't really work. And the decor is very dated, but the place was pretty clean

- Nigel (8/5): -
- Andrew (10/5): - The staff and food are amazing! I loved it Beds really really comfortable but rooms could do with an update
- Paula (9/5): Loved being in a truly Welsh family run charming place, best faggotts I’ve had since my nan’s. Great to hear the local b - A great position for train line to Cardiff, cosy and homely with good food.
- Malgorzata (8/5): - Friendly staff and great food, especially breakfast.
Great value for money.

- Fernando (10/5): Incredible quality/price rate - Excellent hosts. Wonderful food!
- Rob (7/5): - Staff and breakfast Very dated
- Shirley (10/5): - It's was a lovely stay and staff friendly All of it
- Volodomor (10/5): - WiFi is not good..
- Stewart Gent (9/5): - Very nice staff and extremely cost effective Room a little tired but ok for the price
- linda (8/5): Lovely - The breakfast was lovely, freshly cooked and very well served. The evening meal menu that was available, had a wide variety of choice, and was very good value for money. I always feel a little edgy, going or staying anywhere unknown to me. But this place made my wife granddaughter and myself instantly fine and relaxed about being there. The staff and the local people made us feel very happy and welcome. Our stay at the hotel was not for pleasure, we were visiting the area for a family funeral 😞. That being said, we would love to visit again hopefully for a more joyous occasion or just for leisure 😀. We didn't like the fact that our short stay had to come to an end. We would definitely stay again, but if we were to be picky, a firmer bed would be nice 😀
- robin (10/5): - Price of meals were outstanding. Staff very pleasant and accommodating . Very charming grade 1 building. Nothing exactly as we expected.
- Arek (1/5): Worst hotel we have booked. - Our engineer did not stay the night and had to pay for another room on air B&B due the cleanliness of the room, laid down for 15 minutes and was itching all over. Our engineer did not stay the night and had to pay for another room on air B&B due the cleanliness of the room, laid down for 15 minutes and was itching all over.
- Stephanie (8/5): Doggy friendly and easy drive to Cardiff after. - Breakfast was delicious as was our Evening meal as we decided to eat in the bar. There was some friendly locals in. Was great we could bring the dog 🐕 lovely host Ann. Thank you. Not a lot in the town itself when we walked down.
- haydn (7/5): - breakfast was great
- James (2/5): The staff and room were absolutely fine, but I would not recommend it for motorcyclists - Not the owners fault, but vehicles were not secure. We were on motorcycles and during the night there was a theft attempt. With it being a pub as well, it seems like it attracts local rats in the area. One of the bikes security disc locks was bashed and damaged his disc. This almost spoilt our trip.
- Bernard (7/5): Very enjoyable -
- David (10/5): -
- Ivan (8/5): -
- Louise (8/5): - Lovely people, quite a gem. The area is fascinating and mostly underappreciated, wonderful scenery and history
- Alexandra (9/5): - Friendly staff, clean rooms and complimentary breakfast.... Cant fault it
- Annemarie (7/5): Very pleasant stay, lovely people, good location with amazing scenery and walks nearby.. - The staff and owner of the place were very friendly, helpful, lovely and welcoming.
I had no problem bringing my dog, no extra charges for her.
The food was delicious.
Lovely chats with some locals.
- Malik (5/5): - Nothing Nothing
- john (6/5): Excellent value for money - Very old and old fashioned but very clean, quiet and welcoming
- Martin (7/5): Good value accommodation and very friendly staff - Good value and perfect location for hiking in Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains
- Alex (8/5): - Good location to Bike Park Wales. Lovely old pub with great value food and beer!
A perfect place to finnish up your day. Dated facilities but it was warm and comfortable.
- Will (10/5): Great place to stay - Everything, the prices for food and drink were very good as was the quality for both, the room was superb, the shower was lovely and hot, and although I went to bed early I didnt hear anything at all, all in all a great stay Nothing, it was absolutely perfect
- Taylor Walsh (8/5): - Great cooked breakfas served by friendly staff.
Location good for local attractions ie steam railway and outdoor pursuits center.
- Judith (6/5): - Friendly staff, nice breakfast area with quirky decor. Tasty breakfast with lots of bacon.
Plenty of coffee/tea in the room. Books available to read in the corridor. A newer mattress would have been nice as it was uncomfortable and dropping down to one side.
No shampoo/shower gel. Handsoap only.
Could do with a thorough clean everywhere and cleaner linen.
- Natalie (8/5): B&B was fine for an overnight stay thanks - Location, cost, staff were friendly It’s an old building with uneven floors and steps.
- Cécile (7/5): -
- Ringo Son Of England (10/5): - Everything Plumbing
- Chris (8/5): Adequate one night stay - Excellent breakfast. Location was pleasant and convenient for Brecon Beacons. Hotel felt rustic, but mostly well cared for. Bar is popular with locals, providing regular evening events. Plenty of parking space. Bedroom on high floor with no wifi. No bedside lights provided.
- Number 6 (5/5): - The staff Hot water was on/ off shower very poor
- Killner (9/5): - Evening meal very good breakfast very good
- Jane (9/5): Lovely stay, would visit again, bed too soft for me but others slept ok. - Helpful accommodating staff, great breakfast, character building, super bar, facilities great if dated, parking easy. Double bed too soft.
- Chris (4/5): Dissapointed - The food options were plentiful, and meals were well cooked. Some of the staff were friendly The rooms were outdated, mattresses appalling (well used), black mould on the bathroom ceiling. Not enough towels for 2 people (seems we were expected to share). For a hotel that accepted dogs after 11pm (ground floor alarmed with motion detectors) the only option given was to use the fire escape (metal, open tread, spiral) if the dog needed to go out. This caused stress to our dog!
- Richard (8/5): - Food at Rhymney is excellent, both free breakfast and meals. The only let down is the hotel needs to be freshened up and upgraded with a lick of paint and new bedroom decor and beds, otherwise very friendly staff and clean rooms and for the price can’t complain.
- Colin (8/5): -
- Naomi (7/5): Sweet country stay! -
- Kevin Hargrave (7/5): - Staff very accommodating, excellent food and very good value Noisy pipes, room was cold
- Stuart (4/5): Budget friendly - good breakfast - but if you can't sleep on a clothes-line, perhaps give it a miss? - The staff were friendly and helpful and the breakfast was good Very worn 80s decor carpets on stairs looked stained/dirty - but cream isn't a good choice of a stairway. The bedroom was really old fashioned - partition walls were tissue paper thin - floorboards creaking, mattress so soft and springs boing when you sat on it never mind laid on it. The shower was a disaster - not enough height in the ceiling for the outlet....water flow poor - either scortching red hot or cold..... bar of soap for washing with (not seen a bar of soap in years - pref for liquid soap these days). Heating in the building worked - but not in my room. The window leaked cold air & the bed is directly under it.
- John (10/5): - Great staff, excellent food, welcoming attitude from the locals
- LEE (10/5): Great location - Great service and good location
- Shelley (7/5): Homely Cooking - Very handy having the restaurant there, with good home-made food. Service could take a long time. Bar could get very noisy.
- Tahsin (10/5): -
- David (8/5): Nice old style pub hotel - Overnight stay visit family
- Alan (6/5): -
- Emilia (4/5): -
- Sheffield (3/5): Extremely disappointing stay in outdated hotel with no facilities, currently being sold - Location was very handy for my visit to family, breakfast was extremely good Decor was very dated and door noisy and handles not securely fitted to door. TV was smallest I have seen in a long time and no remove control, so I had to operate from the tv set itself. Some wallpaper had already come away from the wall. Bathroom tap in basin wasn't attached properly. Our room was at the back of the hotel so there was no view from the very small window. Carpets were seriously dirty in the stairwell. Was advised that the downstairs would be alarmed from around 10 pm, only way outside was through emergency door and down very old metal spiral staircase
- MR S F (4/5): Last resort stay in your car - Hotel is very very outdated from the smell of stale beer throughout to the very dirty carpets going up the stairs to the rooms,The bedroom the beds are very cheap didnt even have matching bed linen, there was no tv remote i asked for one they said they would get one but didnt the paintwork was chipped and peeling on all the woodwork ,the towels were rock hard with a small tablet of soap the shower was dirty the taps on the dink turned all the way to the wall when trying to turn on or off i slept on top of the bed as it felt dirty after a very long day at work i didnt have the energy to move hotels due to the condition of rooms i didnt eat there so cannot confirm as to quality of food last resort wouldnt stay again i move about different hotrls evry night due to work definitely on the never again list
- Naomi (8/5): -
- Karen (9/5): Great place to stay! - Owners and staff so very friendly and helpful. Ann's omelette was one of the best I've ever had! Also as I had to leave early and so miss breakfast, they kindly offered, and insisted on making me up a breakfast tray. So very kind and thoughtful. Extremely comfy bed, in fact one of the best nights sleep in a very long time! Definitely hope to return !
- Natalie (8/5): -
- ilde (6/5): - The food and the area Room was quite dirty
- Anthony (8/5): -
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Extremely dirty and unkempt place. Never go again.
- JIM (2/5): hotel needs a lot of money spent on it. - bar meals and drinks very good value room 5 is terrible. bed is in an alcove no room for bedside table and a struggle to get into bed. wallpaper peeling off .needs painting. no curtains. shower room too small.
- Michal (9/5): -
- Maclellan (10/5): Going again - Wonderful staff, very friendly locals, food really good and reasonable prices. Just off the main heads of the valley main road. Rooms do need upgrading but the friendly nature of staff and locals override this, as a lone traveller it's nice that everyone engages with you. Just that the rooms need upgrading.
- Richard (7/5): Friendly, cheap and cheerful. - Price, friendly staff and restaurant food was good. Decor very dated and needs freshening up.
- Rodney (10/5): - everything nothing
- kevin (7/5): Great little place to stay value for money and a night - Very good value for money staff very helpful and polite
Cheep food and great beer Temperature and power of the shower
Very hot and not very powerful but enough to get clean
Single bed very uncomfortable hard and only 1 pillow
Very low ceilings in our bedroom and the light switch was at the door telly didn't work properly a tadd noisy outside and some 1 walking around making a bit of noise opening doors
- Inga (7/5): Good value for money - It was a good price for room, excellent price for good food and drinks in pub. It is time to update the room and mattress. Food hygiene raiting sticker on door could be better.
- George (8/5): - Really friendly team, i was made to feel very welcome. Great food, dinner and breakfast were freshly cooked and plenty of choice. Excellent value for money. Room was very spacious. A bit dated, but everything was clean and comfortable so no issues.
- Tom (6/5): Reasonable for the price - It's a hotel with a nice pub underneath, in a quiet location outside of Rhymney. The room had everything we needed: bed, towels, soap bar, kettle, tea/coffee, shower. The man working when we arrived was very friendly. The breakfast was ok. For the money, it was reasonable. The room was very tired and could have used a deep clean, especially the bathroom. For some reason the radiator was on full blast. The breakfast didn't have quite enough coffee available. Care needs to be taken going in and out of the carpark - the potholes are significant.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Grubby - Staff were lovely, the food was good and reasonably priced. The bar area was welcoming then we get to the dreaded accommodation. Room 5 grubby and in desperate need of a facelift. Can’t say what the other rooms are like but judging on my room not great. Luckily only stayed the one night.
- Hugh (8/5): The staff were doing their very best in difficult circumstances: the hotel was up for sale. - Excellent meals sThe room was rather cramped and a bit shabby. Smart new bathroom.
- Richard (8/5): - Good price, cheerful, tidy and freindly! Will use again.
- Matt (8/5): Good base for a short stay visiting the Brecon Beacons national park - Good location close to main roads for accessing the surrounding areas
The staff were friendly and helpful when I advised that I would be returning late.
The shower was warm and clean.
There was parking right outside.
Breakfast was nice for the price paid. The property fixtures and fittings are showing their age in places and could do with a refresh; however, I think this is reflected in the price.
The mattress felt like it could probably do with replacing quite soon.
The locks on the room doors did not feel particularly secure.
- Teresa (3/5): - Friendly reception. Obviously a very dated hotel, wornout everything.
- Chris (4/5): Tatty and cheap - I made the mistake of believing the reviews.
Didn't realize it had only had 6 reviews
That must be friends and family.
The decor is seriously 30 to 40 years old.
Small TV , freezing cold shower
It wasn't expensive . So I should've expected it.
If you want somewhere to doss it's fine.
The place is a pit !
- Lisa (8/5): -
- Ian (7/5): -
- Alex (10/5): -
- Pamela (9/5): Fantastic - The staff were very friendly and the food was exceptional. It may be a little tired but it was comfortable and cosy and fabulous value for money. Not staaying more than one night!
- Clare (8/5): -
- Kuldeep (10/5): -
- Tony (7/5): -
- Sean (10/5): - Great staff. Really good place for exploring nearby and the Beacons. Good base. Great food and insanely good prices. Will be back
- Dave (8/5): Cheap and cheerful hotel, friendly staff, cheap beer! A good breakfast, the locals are hilarious! - Good location, great staff, friendly atmosphere, comfy bed and a great breakfast. It's an old building with the decor to match but it's taste thing, not to mine but clean and tidy.
- Webb (8/5): Budget friendly, warm and welcoming. - Welcoming hosts and great breakfast It was all very good for the price and setting..nothing negative to add.
