Guest Reviews
- Theodore (3/5): Disappointing - The breakfast was good. The hot water wasn't responsive and the shower came out as a trickle in the shared bathroom. Also, the WiFi password on notices was incorrect and the WiFi was turned off on arrival, which seemed very strange.
- Zarow (1/5): - Bardzo slabe Czystość, obsługa, objekt wyglądał jak nieczynny .
- Adrian Tarit (8/5): Great, comfortable, No frills accommodation with an excellent breakfast. - Breaakfast was great to set you up for a few hours on the local hills and trails. Room good size and comfortable. Although it was ok.... a more homely. communal seating area/lounge would be good.
- Kenny (6/5): Good place to spend the night to walk in the Highlands or be a tourist. - Very reasonably priced. Comfortable room. Nice breakfast. Limited dinner options. Bar seemed to close quite early. But the owner was clearly doing pretty much everything single handed. So well done for keeping the plates spinning.
- Andrew (9/5): - Beautiful area. Ideal for local attractions. Nothing.
- Sylvie (7/5): -
- Stefan (5/5): Passable -
- Matthew (7/5): Good -
- Cati (1/5): Unsafe and unclean - The location is convenient. There's a village store across the road, and it's half an hour from petrol station, restaurants.
Room 8 seemed ok. The hotel is infested with bed bugs. The room we were given had adult bugs crawling all over the bed, headboard, mattress and blankets. The toilet had old urine stains all over the porcelain. Staff confirmed the infestation but initially asked us to remain in that room until we insisted to move.
Kitchen breakfast area was very old looking, hygiene standards unacceptable. We chose not to eat the breakfast included in the rate.
The owner/staff member is extremely creepy and odd. I would not recommend it to so solo female travellers.
- Philip (3/5): Poor -
- Krzysztof (7/5): Good -
- Catherine (9/5): Superb - Breakfast was excellent. Place was very quiet and peaceful.
- Von (4/5): Please do better and up do letting your wee hotel down - The area is in between callander and the backend of going up north
Not much In this wee village Arrived the owner or staff where at the bar stood for ages and looked at us then finally ask our name for booking ok
Showed us to the room which was fine
Got into the room and looked clean needed a wee update some paper coming off wall and wee lick of paint wasn't until I sat on the bed I could small a musty small so I had to spray perfume
The toilet is definitely en suit it's a wee built bathroom within the room
With sliding door which is fine but the bed is the same side bed would be better where TV was so u can't smell the toilet and see who Ur with using the toilet
The shower well that's a wee 9 for me
The kettle wouldn't work told him when we went down to see about bar food which is said to be served between 5-8pm only three things available which I wouldn't eat any
So we had to got callander which wasn't good for my husband as he could even unwind and have a glass of wine
The place it'self has loads of character and would be a fab hotel
The owner or staff as only seen this one man who didn't even get new kettle while we were out for us or even said when we got back oh here sorry this one works
I can laugh as I called it the bates/bratinain hotel cause that's how it felt
Maybe wasn't running at full staff cause summer season hasn't started but don't say you have food when you done really and breakfast was a let down too
Sorry too say, we have passed this wee hotel so many times I was so disappointed and to make matters worse it was a special wkend for us so really kind of upset me
- Maria (5/5): Passable - Room was pleasant and comfortable The welcome email said food available until 8pm - would not recommend taking this option.
- Carty (5/5): Relaxing weekend away - It was warm, comfortable and a good breakfast.Host asw a bit awkward at first but relaxed a bit and was helpful as staying went on.The hotel is clean to a basic level but tired and dated . When we arrived the hotel looked closed, big blue doors locked tables outside with all paint peeling, falling apart, weeds under table. Would be better kerb appeal to tidy up the tables or take away brush up,empty ashtray. Maybe put a sign on door to say booking in starts at 4pm and some will be available from then because it looked so run down from outside we thought we had been scammed and the place was shut down. This is not a complaint but constructive advice. The owner seems to be doing it up and as a lot of work needing done but I'm sure it will be worth it when finished .
- Dave (2/5): Very poor - Absolutely nothing Owner had no social skills and very ignorant.
Bar area very untidy and dirty.
Beer sour..date labels on beer bottles removed.
No wardrobe in room to hang clothes.
Bathroom had a nail In wall to hang towels
Pictures of hotel are old because it's very tatty and paint peeling everywhere.
Although we paid for breakfast we never had as he doesn't start till 8.30 and told you may need to wait an hour but it just wasn't clean so didn't want to eat anything
- Shelly (4/5): Well to sum it up, we went to the next pub down for drinks and food out of necessity and wanting to avoid becoming ill. - It’s a beautiful building but very run down and need of a total revamp. I’ve honestly never left a review like this and do so with a heavy heart as the hotel has lots of potential.
The min bar was grimy and dark so we planned to sit out in the sun, big mistake!
We ordered two drinks to sit out side on the picnic benches. The pint of lager was cloudy and tasted like soda water. The gin had flat lemonade in which was poured from a bottle that looked as though it had been open for months. The seats outside aren’t usable we sat on them and it felt like it was going to collapse. The bench also had peeling paint all over and was very uncomfortable to sit on, so we left and went to the pub down the road. 9we left the drinks). The room is mostly clean however very basic. The mattress has springs poking through so very uncomfortable and the pillows were as flat as a pancake. Not a great sleep :(. The sink is weird the taps are so close to the basin it’s hard to get anything under the tap. On reflection the taps were too small for the sink.
The host looked very unkempt which was off putting and struggled with basic social skills. He looked like he really didn’t like being there and he didn’t want the guests there. It all felt very uncomfortable. We left first thing the next morning and would has left that night but had already tried the refreshments down the road so couldn’t drive.
- Honor (8/5): Husband and I enjoyed our stay with a good meal. Steven was brilliant and very attentive - A lovely hotel to spend the night in
- Flowers1 (3/5): Naw! - location Very uncomfortable experience. Doors locked on arrival, smell was unpleasant, host wearing dirty clothes and with dirty hands to greet us and we felt like we were intruding. Breakfast was awful. Bedding is old, sheets worn and the pillows were lumpy and thin.
Pity because it's a beautiful building and with the proper attention could be a fantastic place to relax.
- Leeanne (9/5): Superb - Great host .
- Poland (5/5): Limit your expectations. - The location of the hotel is great. In the centre of the Strathyre, next to a village shop and scenic paths. Free parking plus free overflow parking with charging points for EV Problems with electric supply. If you put a katle on most likely you will cause a blackout to entire building. Wifi is down very often. The village itself has very poor 4G coverage (O2 customer)
- Belinda (5/5): Passable - Guy was really nice got me in tea asked for breakfast was ok place clean bed comfy only thing needs a bit tlc he was there his self don’t know if more staff in the summer we were there out off season
- Cameron (10/5): Livingroom Bath Room - Beautiful, clean room with a bath in the living room. Very grateful to the host for cooking us dinner, as we were told in the village pub that food was only available for residents, which was a blow! Room was cold when we got there (it was freezing outside) but once we turned the radiator up it was fine.
- Craig (4/5): Disappointing -
- Aldo (5/5): Passable - Breakfast was lovely Room was very cold
- Alistair (7/5): Pleasant overnight in Strathyre on the Rob Roy Way - The place is really well located with good sized rooms. Wifi was good, breakfast was great. Fully stocked bar, had a nice pint. The host found a place to store my bike securely overnight, and lent me a pump when I mentioned that mine was broken. I got upgraded to a bigger room for free which was a nice surprise. The room was clean and comfortable. Its an older style guesthouse that is a bit outdated, but its actually fine, and met my expectations. The host is socially awkward and doesn't have the social cues you might expect, but he went out of his way to help me when asked.
- Mhairi (6/5): Pleasant -
- Warden (9/5): UK Tour - It was what we thought. Steve was a great host and meeting some of the locals was good.
- Jonathan (1/5): Think the Hills Have Eyes and you’d be on the money. Had to sleep with a chair wedged against the door. Check room for h - The upstairs fire door made a hilarious fart noise when closing. Rear car park is a scrap yard full of abandoned cars and boats with only 2 spaces for guests. Not felt this short changed since that Willy Wonka experience I got tickets for.
- Sarah (2/5): Very poor - It was an accessible stop off for an onward journey Unwelcoming host and woke up to bugs in the bed and on the floor. When sharing our concerns, the host seemed uninterested and offered no apology.
After the stay we received an email saying we hadn't showed up and may be charged a no show fee still TBC.
- Marcin (1/5): We should stay 2 night as we pay for for was so bad that we left after one day . - Nothing Was cold everywhere and smell in Bar was horrible
Beer was old
- Derek (8/5): Ben shenanigans review - Clean, quiet and comfortable Nothing really
- Sarah (1/5): Unsettling. - The location was good, the hotel has the potential to be great with a different approach to customer interactions. The room itself was a good size and the main bedroom area was nice enough although the bathroom seemed a bit manky. The biggest issue with this hotel was the man checking us in. I think it would be a much more pleasant stay if he employed someone else for front of house interactions as my dealings with him left me feeling extremely uncomfortable (to the point I felt too uncomfortable to stay there!)
It was a very cold and unwelcoming place. I'm not sure if there was some neurodivergence impacting his ability to interact with customers but there was a significant delay in responding, no welcome, no social pleasantries or picking up on social cues and his manner was very abrupt, almost as if we were an inconvenience. (He didn't say hello, welcome or anything just silently led us to the card machine and gestured for us to pay.) Because of his manner, it didn't feel like we could approach him to attempt to resolve any of the issues we had with the bathroom/ temperature/wifi etc. Tbh I couldn't get out of there quick enough!
We didn't want to waste our time away, we made the decision to check out pretty much immediately which left us £99 out of pocket. I urge people to read trip advisor reviews for this place before booking it.
- Elaine (1/5): Disgusting and unsuitable property - There unfortunately was nothing to like about the establishment. The gentleman who showed us to our room was not very friendly he was very socially awkward, didn't seem to care about us or our booking! Room was not as booked, shown to a different room which was grubby, door to bathroom didn't close, no glasses in bathroom or anywhere to hang towels etc. it was not clean, floor dirty. Bedroom had serious issues, dirt on window frame, blind in the room was missing a chord so as to give any privacy, carpet dirty, door wedged open, cups were seriously lacking in cleanliness, plug extension was disgusting dirty posing serious health risk. Door to the room was not fitted properly you could see where it clearly did not connect with the frame. Absolutely appalling!!
Outside was very rundown, garden as mentioned in details was non existing looked more like a scrap yard, building is in serious need of repairs and upgrades.
When tried to speak to the gentleman he disappeared, switched lights out and wouldn't come to speak to us regarding our concerns.
This establishment should not be still open for business and should not be listed on any site for booking. Recommend avoiding at all costs.
In the end we could not stay there so left without a satisfactory resolution or response from staff.
Pictures were taken to support the bedroom unfortunately there is not enough space to provide all taken!
Overall would like a full refund from this establishment and would like some feedback regarding this establishment from Booking.com as to why it is still listed, it is a health hazard!!
- James (7/5): Overnight stay while walking the Rob Roy Way - Good location for walking the Rob Roy Way. Quiet hotel with a bright and airy room. The hotel was a bit understaffed I felt with the same person on reception, in the bar, cooking the everning meals and providing the breakfasts. There was a very long wait of nearly an hour between ordering food in the evening and it being served.
- Sabine (6/5): Pleasant -
- Gavin (7/5): Good -
- Rits (8/5): Very good -
- Gary (6/5): Pleasant -
- Gaja (8/5): Very good -
- Tracy (7/5): Good -
- Mackenzie (5/5): Good value for money in the heart of the Scottish countryside - Evening meal was good and excellent value for money, breakfast could have been a bit better but passable. Very nice location in the middle of the village Front of house could have been better. Lack of staff meant service was a bit slow at times. The facilities are a bit tired but again what I would expect for price we paid.
- Thibaut (8/5): Very good - This hotel is well situated in a lovely area. There is parking behind the hotel and another one free on the other side of the road. The owner was helpful and gave us some advice about monuments to visit in Stirling and a walk near the hotel.
The room was okay (a bit old) but we slept well. The breakfast was good and well cooked by the owner.
- Watson (5/5): Passable -
- Androdavide (5/5): Passable -
- Olga (7/5): Good - Great location, nice breakfast, easy parking, helpful staff Smaller bathroom
- Shamie (6/5): Pleasant - Good Location
Room was spotless and bed was comfy
Evening meal was good as was Breakfast
Owner friendly and pleasant Reception and Bar area maybe in need of an update
- Kevin (3/5): Poor - The location is beautiful, peaceful The hotel was dirty and run down, need updating. Such a shame because it's a beautiful building in a great location I don't think the owner has his heart on it. I would only return if it was updated, maybe he needs a visit from the hotel inspector, Alex Polizzi, she would definitely sort it out for him and I hope the owner can get help and I can return
- Anthony (1/5): Glad when it was over - Booking.com would benefit from occasionally sending someone out to see for themselves some of the hotels advertised on their website. If they did this they would discover that this hotel is well below any star rating. Probably the worst place we have stayed since the Brentwood hotel in porthcawl. Do your customers a favour Booking.com and remove this place from your website Everything
- Shona (7/5): Helpful and quiet stay with space in the rooms - Location was beautiful close to walking trails and easy access to Callander. We were there for a competition and the owner opened breakfast early for us so that we could eat before swimming. Rooms were quiet and we slept well. The owner works hard doing everything from cooking to bar and checking in.
- Schnell (8/5): Very good -
- Lorna (8/5): Fab. I’d go back 😀 - Lovely and quiet. Lovely cosy room. Proprietor looked after us all brilliantly. Breakfast lovely
- Iain (7/5): Good -
- Robert (4/5): Disappointing -
- Bruce1963 (4/5): Poor - Location Zero input from owner, it made faulty towers look like a documentary
- Graham (8/5): A pleasant place to stay in the Trossachs - old style comfort - Breakfast was very good - choices available were appropriate, quantities were good.
Good room size for a solo traveller
Comfy chair in the room
Liked having a guest lounge - did not have sit in my room the whole time Very small television - hard to see from the bed
Needed more teabags for a three night stay
- John (8/5): A most relaxing time away, just what was required. - The breakfast was most acceptable.
- Finnigan (4/5): Shit hole - Location The welcome the man there is a bit of a weirdo tbh benches out the front never been painted in years one I almost went through it damp patches in the room the shower was pathetic tbh it's like guest house paradiso lol breakfast was ok got ours then waited five mins for the toast to arrive
- Adrian (3/5): Disappointing - Nothing really Shabby, bar wasn’t open and uninviting in any case. Person who looked after us at check in and breakfast was clearly not a people person. Not to be unkind, but speaking as a former hotelier, this is not his metier. Single rooms were mediocre - doubles did seem a little better in fairness.
- Holland (10/5): Exceptional -
- Robert (6/5): Pleasant -
- Sean (5/5): Passable -
- Brian (2/5): Very poor - Nothing much really The guy that owns it wasn't very welcoming and the bed sheets weren't clean, we decided not to stay there, we got accommodation in tyndrum instead
- Nancy (7/5): Lovely location and a pleasant old-fashioned hotel. - Breakfast was great, and the hotel was helpful about getting me in and out in a timely fashion, as I had to be off early.
- Matthew (8/5): Very good - Area
- Margaret (4/5): Disappointing - The location is the only good thing about this hotel No hospitality with the owner
Room needed a larger duvet and new pillows
- Taz (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely stay, comfy bed and a lovely breakfast
- Oleksandr (10/5): Exceptional - Very nice cozy hotel. The room is clean, the bed is comfortable. The surroundings are very beautiful: close to
Falls of Leny and the beach on Loch Lubnaig.
- Rhian (5/5): Passable -
- Pamela (3/5): Poor -
- Elinor (5/5): Cheap, basic, no frills, but clean. You get what you pay for - Low Cost
Breakfast was substantial
Location was exactly where we needed Reception could have been friendlier. The man did not have a friendly and hospitable demeanour. He seemed reluctant to engage with us and there was no smiles or welcomes at all, just the odd grunt. He took payment on arrival then proceeded to serve behind the bar rather than give us a room key. When asked if we could have a key he told us to wait! Room was clean and tidy. We decided to eat out somewhere else as bar menu was rather basic, but the breakfast the following morning was pretty decent. Whole building looked a bit tired and scrappy and 'car park' at the back was neglected to say the least.
- Sean (8/5): Very good -
- Chris (7/5): Good -
- Mark (8/5): Very good -
- Mandy (10/5): Very friendly and great value for money - Great wee place. Definitely made feel at home. N/a
- Michelle (10/5): Exceptional - Value for money and the food was lovely could no fault food If your look for a cheap night away with good food then this is ok need a bit of a fresh up with paint but clean and cheap to stay
- Tracy (3/5): A pitiful place. Only the scenery of the lake & good breakfast made up for it. - The breakfast only Everything. Shower had a leak and spurting water. There was no light in the bathroom at all, nothing. The room was damp and claustrophobic.
- Beverley (6/5): Pleasant - Good location.Good breakfast.Parking available. Ensuite not sound proof.
Owner not a people person...but ok.
Reluctant to do evening meals.
- Rachel (3/5): Stunning location, bedbugs and reaction from staff were a let down. - The location was beautiful and it was a lovely old building the interior however was a let down. Some of the staff were nice however the man that greeted us at the front desk seemed almost surprised we were there. Upon settling down for bed, we discovered evidence of bed bugs in the headboard of the bed. This discovery was not only distressing but also deeply concerning for both our health and overall comfort during our stay. As a responsible traveler, we attempted to inform the front desk at the time however no one was to be found - it was after midnight - and instead informed you of the situation during departure, after a terrible night sleep and moving the mattress onto the floor, albeit in a rush due to time constraints.
Regrettably, the response I received was not as reassuring or satisfactory as we had hoped. Despite raising the issue with your staff, there was no acknowledgment of the severity of the situation, nor any offer of immediate resolution or compensation.
Attempts to contact have been subsequently made but to no response.
- Sophia (10/5): Great stay, we felt very welcome and really enjoyed the breakfast - Bespoke breakfast - amazing service - good coffee
- Amber (2/5): Disappointed and not good for money - Free parking Staff was rude. We visited this property after loving it the last time we went and it was a massive disappointment. The bedsheets had hair and blood stains on them which we reported to the man on reception and he was very argumentative. It was good enough to go back after last time but wouldn’t go back again
- Eric (7/5): Made to feel very welcome. Excellent beef tacos made for us in the evening - Welcoming and good value
- Brian (10/5): Good value for money, made very welcome - Friendly staff, great food, very hospitable
- Samurai (3/5): Once is enough - Very central, Very noisy when traffic gone by. Tv not working, spider running along the ceiling, not very friendly place

- Graham (5/5): Passable -
- Ian (10/5): Exceptional -
- Caralena (1/5): Bad - Nothing All of it
- Heatherpat (9/5): Superb - Clean, comfortable room. Nice view and lovely breakfast
- John (10/5): Exceptional - Huge room, more like an apartment :-)
- Steven (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely staff
- Vikki (7/5): Comfortable room, noisy road. - Nice bright comfortable room Breakfast doesn't start until 8.30 which seems strange in an area where it's likely that people will want to be up & out early for outdoor activities. I left at 7.30 & they put out juice, cereal & milk for me to help myself to which was kind, but beware if you have an early start & look forward to a cooked breakfast ahead of your day in the hills. Also beware that there's nowhere to get an evening meal in Strathyre - unless you're a guest at the other hotel!
- Ian (2/5): A waste of £94.50 - We didn’t stay overnight. Room was very poor standard. Poor room. Strange owner. Very disappointing to find this hotel on Booking.com
- Benjamin (7/5): Good -
