Guest Reviews
- Viktoriia (10/5): - everything was excellent ! Thanks to Houseman Aubrey, you are awesome !!!
- Ghazaryan (10/5): - Everything was great, a real New York–style building, cosy atmosphere. The staff were always ready to help, and the location was excellent: close to the metro and only about 10 minutes to the city centre by express train. There are also several supermarkets nearby.
- MARIANE (10/5): -
- Belinda (5/5): Short stay and good enough. Beautiful kitchen! - Great kitchen, nice shower. Cleanliness- towels, bathmats and sheets were dingy and in poor repair. Tub didn’t look super clean and the remote was sticky. Also, the toilet was not private.
- Eugenia (8/5): - Cocina completa
- Diogo (4/5): -
- Mohammed (8/5): -
- Nicolas (9/5): Great location in Harlem - Very nicely decorated Mansion. Friendly host and great accommodation. Free water bottles, coffee machine,... Nothing

- Geert (8/5): - Lovely brownstone with great interior decoration, a true Harlem experience

- marco (8/5): Ottima soluzione - La cucina è attrezzata e ci sono acqua e cornetti e caffè sempre a disposizione . Staff simpaticissimo e sempre disponibile . Ottima soluzione e camere grandi!
- Irina (10/5): Exquisite BnB - The property is incredible - a lot of character and beautiful sculpted furniture in the lobby. It’s almost like a museum. The room was comfortable and had a nice outdoor patio space. The toilet has no door - I’d appreciate more privacy.
- Maria (7/5): Good - The staff, lounge and kitchen Room wasn’t very clean , not the bathroom
- Rosa (9/5): - It was very comfortable, the manager was super nice and very friendly.
We only stayed one night but I’m planning on staying there in the future Well, in booking.com it says breakfast included and when I asked the manager about the breakfast hours, he said that breakfast is not provided…There is bread , and coffee and he got us croissants the next morning… that was very nice to start the day
- Frank (10/5): - The mansion was lovely and well taken care of. The caregiver was there right away to show me around and take mine and my friends laugage right up!
- Rachael (10/5): Worth it for a real neighborhood stay in NYC, not touristy!! - The house is beautiful. Historic and unique. If you want a cookie cutter hotel, look elsewhere! This place has personality and soul. It's located very close to the subway and multiple bus stops. The people that run it are very friendly and Aubrey gave us a great tour with loads of information right off the bat! We arrived over an hour and a half early due to all our transportation going as easy and seamless as possible (mind-blowing) and Shakir made sure to reach out to Aubrey and let us in with our bags to rest and recharge. It was so kind and definitely above and beyond. Aubrey checked in with us often when he saw us in the common rooms, making sure we had cool water and ready to answer questions about our travel for the day. I love the neighborhood vibe of this stay. I felt like such a local even though I was definitely sticking out as a tourist 🤣 Not a criticism, but something to note if you need multiple rooms; the layout is very unique. Some rooms upstairs and some downstairs. Ask ahead of booking about which rooms are available and close together. I requested two rooms close together if possible without asking about the layout. One was up and one was down. Luckily, I was traveling with Teens who enjoyed being a little removed from Momma's eye. Since every door has its own code, Aubrey made sure to give both me and the teens the codes to both rooms and to show them where I'm staying so they could "Find Momma if needed". It was very sweet and thoughtful. It would be nice if the rooms had a full length mirror but honestly, that's such a vanity request. I'm on vacation. I don't care how I look! I just want to go explore!!!
- Hongying (10/5): Very nice! -
- Yves (9/5): - Very cosy place. Very friendly staff. Close to good restaurants and concert venues. Has lots of atmosphere. Great common kitchen and living area. Quiet at night.
- Gregory (9/5): -
- Emma (9/5): Superb -
- Deanna (7/5): Harlem Beauty - Comfortable beds. Very helpful when our check-in was late due to flight delays. Beautiful old brownstone. Lovely kitchen and common area. Bathroom was clean. Easy to get to public transportation. Easy to get to great restaurants and groceries. Noisy a/c in twin garden view room. Hot common area made it impossible to use the area in afternoon or evening (July). Wifi very poor on top floor. Extender just wasnt doing the job. Not sure I would stay here alone in the future. Neighborhood is a bit iffy at night.
- Joseph (9/5): Superb -
- Winkie (7/5): It was a wonderful stay. - The staff are very hospitable and kind. Thumbs up to Shakira and Aubrey. Clean and peaceful environment. The kitchen is equipped with everything. A mini fridge in the bedroom would be nice.
- Sumaira (10/5): Excellent interior and good value of money - Shakir was excellent, explained everything about the mansion. About 15-18 minutes walk from Mta
- Jennifer.hamrick2 (10/5): Perfect spot to stay for a night in the city. Out of the hustle in a real neighborhood. - The host was fantastic and friendly. The air conditioner kept the room nice and comfortable. The bed and pillows were great, and the in-room shower had great pressure. The mansion is really neat and I would have loved to ask for a tour but we were only there for a short one-night stay.
- Amanda (8/5): Good location - Helpful, friendly staff, great location, nice kitchen space Our room decor was a little dated, felt a bit cluttered
- James (10/5): Comfortable and friendly - Everyone everyone was so positive and made the stay very comfortable, I can honestly say that I'm going to refer people because it was that well put together and I will be going back again. The comfortability , the pleasantness of the staff..... I mean what more can you ask for?
- Celicia (8/5): Pleasant stay, I'd return. - Perfect location, easy walk to many subway lines. Eateries all around along with nightlife and coffeeshops. There was a slight odor in my room.
- Kathy (10/5): would definitely stay there again - It was very close to where my son lives. Need a night stand next to the bed, and box of tissues in the bathroom
- Melissa (7/5): It was nice. - I would like to have experienced the breakfast part of my stay but I was told I had to pay 15 dollars extra on top of what I paid already. That was a little disappointing. Over all it was nice. Not having breakfast but my partner and I were offered a cup of tea and coffee.
- Anonymous (10/5): Beautiful place and amazing hosts - Everything was perfect, splendid place to stay in New York, near a lot of subway stations, really convenient and people were very friendly and welcoming. The only thing that « bothered » us was that the bathroom’s door wasn’t closing so we had to get a little creative but except for that it was perfect !
- Sabine (10/5): Just perfect! - Lovely guesthouse with excellent facilities, great management Nothing
- Guzel (9/5): Superb -
- Jurman (9/5): Superb -
- Blake (8/5): Comfortable and Unique - Clean Staff not always around
- Susan (9/5): Perfect area with great supermarkets and restaurants nearby, a bit gritty but felt safe. Close for walking in Central Pa - Excellent kitchen with really good saucepans and frying pans. Classy crockery and glasses. All very clean. Perfect for self catering.
- David (8/5): Very good -
- R (9/5): Lovely! - The staf was extremely kind and helpful to us. They responded really fast and since we had a late flight they helped us with everything and the checkout. Really recommend the 2! Breakfast could be a bit more advanced
- Gonzalo (10/5): Already missing this place - Everybody working at NLM made us feel like being at home There is not a single thing I didnt like about Northern Lights
- Hao (10/5): Lovely stay at charming historical mansion. - Charming historical mansion. Super clean. Comfortable beds. Spacious room with high ceiling. Friendly and helpful house master. Love the modern kitchen-dinner room and the living room. Close to subway, good food and Morningside Park. I was a little concerned about the neighborhood at first but it was fine.
- Heather (9/5): Superb - Very friendly staff, wonderful location with proximity to lots of restaurants and music venues. Room was very nice with an eclectic mix of antique touches and modern amenities. Very basic continental breakfast on offer in case you need it, but there are so many great restaurants around that we wouldn't have eaten in anyway!
- Bernard (8/5): Very good -
- Nicholas (10/5): Exceptional -
- Nicholas (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anna (10/5): Great and convenient stay! - Historic building furnished with great taste. Spacious well stocked kitchen and super friendly stuff. Basic breakfast stuff (fruits, toast bread, pb, coffee. The nearby grocery store has a great variety of foods available. It’s an older building beautifully restored, the floor may creak when other guests arrive if you’re staying downstairs. Not a big deal for us!
- Cole (3/5): The most insanely overpriced place I’ve ever stayed for the quality. - The staff were very nice, but this place is insanely overpriced. The “deluxe suite” was in a basement, paint was peeling off the walls, the mattress was ancient and squeaky with a stained headboard, the desk chair was falling apart, there was no duvet on the bed and it was freezing. It was advertised with a private entrance that was boarded up with a sign that said don’t use. For $60 a night this would have been fine, but for $250?? Insane. Photos are extremely misleading.
- Michael (10/5): This is a great place to stay and feel an authentic brown stone building.loved it - Really quirky guest house with a friendly feel No lift so had to carry my heavy case down in the morning
- Deborah (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jenna (5/5): Passable - Lobby is interesting and unusual, block is quiet Terrible mattress and weird decor. It felt like random mash up of furniture and decor purchased cheap on Facebook Marketplace — Brazilian flag covering the bedside table, a Georgia O’Keefe print covering the fireplace, a fabric covered bed frame that was water stained, mismatched lights, and a bathroom door handle falling apart.
- Isabel (10/5): Exceptional -
- Shelley (10/5): What a beautiful building! And the staff and the owner of the property were very helpful with advice and kind extras we - We loved the personal touch, the innkeeper was amazing and couldn’t do enough for us.
Easy train ride in to the city and Harlem had a good vibe.
- Deborah (10/5): Exceptional -
- Southan (8/5): Very good -
- Bérénice (9/5): Perfect! - Vert Nice staff, check in early to drop off my stuff and helped me to carry my luggage!
- Jeremy (9/5): A Quiet Hotel with Helpful Staff - This is a really authentic brownstone guest house with lots of original features in a quiet street in Harlem. Staff were really friendly and helpful and the rooms were nicely decorated and clean. Breakfast and coffee were available in the well equipped kitchen
- Galila (10/5): Feels like home - It's our second time in Northern Lights. Feels like home. I will definitely come back next time. The location great especially if you want to get to Columbia University on foot, but also close to a Metro station which takes you everywhere. The staff is friendly and helpful. The house and rooms have character, and there is a common area with a kitchen where you can have your own breakfast. Highly recommended! The stairs are a bit tricky
- Mia (10/5): Exceptional -
- Minh (9/5): Superb -
- Bill (9/5): Superb - Wonderful and welcoming staff. Beautiful home in an amazing location !!!
I will stay here every time I’m in Harlem !!!
- Ellen (9/5): Superb - Love the accessible Harlem location! Subway close by takes you to midtown in 10 minutes, Greenwich Village in 25. Mansion kitchen is welcoming, coffee + croissants at will. Refrigerate your own lunch if you choose to linger... Would have preferred 2nd floor instead of 3rd.
- Mia (10/5): Exceptional -
- Moe (10/5): Exceptional -
- Moe (9/5): Superb -
- Johnny (7/5): Good -
- Mikaela (8/5): Very good -
- Mary (8/5): Loved our stay, even with the stairs 🤣 Great to have access to a kitchen and bottled water, thank you. - Location - first time staying in Harlem, third visit to New York City.
Aubrey is an outstanding member of your team. It was far too hot, even for Winter.
- Jennifer (7/5): Lovely place. We will stay again but may ask to have radiators turned down before we get there if we have a room on the - Comfortable clean and beautiful It was extremely hot. Turned down heat and opened window but top floor was stifling even with air conditioner going.
- Annette (10/5): would stay again - Free on street parking Felt safe in and about neighborhood Room was warm and comfy and large everything worked well big kitchen and gathering space could use fridge had tea coffee and water some fruit and breads A good subway ride from Times square
- Tiago (9/5): Superb - The staff of the facility is amazing, always willing to help and give instructions. They will help with anything about NYC as well. The location is a little far north of Manhattan (where the major tourist sites are) but the building is between two major metro lines which will take you anywhere in new York in within some minutes. The house is old fashioned but the inside is really modern, which gives you the feeling of staying in a true new Yorker house. The kitchen is really really modern, which can save you a lot of money cooking your food or having your breakfast at home. They also have an amazing coffee machine and have water as courtesy, which was amazing, had coffee every morning there and could enjoy the rest of the day city walking. The rooms were clean and comfortable, the heater worked really fine even with a cold weather in NY. They had everything you needed, shampoo, conditioner, hair drier, clean towels everyday. Everything you should know is in the description. You have stairs inside, so don't ask for a lift. The rooms are not gigantic, so for 3 people might get a little crooked.
- Brian (10/5): Perfect place to stay if you don’t want to deal with the hustle and bustle. - Property was very clean and provided everything needed. The community kitchen was a big plus. The staff went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable. We would stay here again. The room we were in was on the lower level. It was noisy from movement above. But I guess this is to be expected with an older building
- Meltem (10/5): Exceptional - Staff was very welcoming and helpful, Ron is really nice guy. He gave us some suggestions around the area and about closest subway etc.
Rooms were great, it was very warm. If you like old kind of houses with history in it with a budget stay close to Manhattan, this is definetly to go!! Jakuzi was not working in our room, I wish we had chance to try it but not a big deal.
- Mary (8/5): Harlem’s sweetest spot - I did not like the narrow staircase . Had to climb two flights of stairs with suitcases and bad knees
- Alexis (5/5): Passable - The staff reached me via text and was responsive. The room was very nice/modern, spacious, and heated appropriately One of the staff members was rude to my partner when he was inquiring about the kitchen, which was completely uncalled for. Also, someone tried to get into our room in the middle of the night! Thank goodness my partner was there to make them leave!! This really affected my stay, it was nice otherwise but I don’t trust this place after that incident.
- Dmytro (10/5): Exceptional - Very clean and big assortiment of services All good
- Sérgio (7/5): Good - Breakfast itens and water available for shared use, in shared full equiped kitchen. Amenities in the bathrooom. Confortable bed. The stairs to climb until second floor
- Chiara (7/5): Good - Not far from the city center (the metro Is 5 Min walking), nice room, quiet quarter The private sauna didn't work.
- Anne (9/5): Would definitely stay here again. - The room was great and definitely worth the price. The room was VERY spacious - VERY. The staff was friendly - this was probably the best part of my stay. The location was AMAZING - a short walk from the train station and in a very safe environment. It's not a hotel so you have to request to get your beddings changed. Else they'll stay unchanged during your stay. There's also no lift/elevator - you have to pull your luggage up the stairs so better not have hefty luggage. The balcony had invisible bugs which bit me so I didn't use it.
- Anne (7/5): I moved to another room so not much to say - The room was okay. I stayed in it for one night so there's not much to say - I loved the room I was moved to, which was booked as my main stay. There was a door that's not in use outside the shower. Hard to describe but it felt like someone could easily push it and enter the room.
- Lea (9/5): Superb - Very beautiful house with everything in the kitchen to make breakfast (toast, cream cheese, tea, coffee…). The bedroom was great and the private sauna was very a plus!
- Philip (10/5): Perfect place to stay for visit to New York City - 10/10 Amazing stay at beautiful, supremely clean with excellent staff, beautiful house in Harlem. A very special mention to the amazing manager, Ron, who couldn’t have made our stay any better, fantastic job, and Aubrey, the houseman, who had our room immaculate, well done! Nothing, we will come again!
- Lisette (10/5): Highly recommended! - The house is gorgeous and everything is very clean. The kitchen is the best part and you'll find coffee and water at your disposal. You can also use the kitchen to cook.
As stipulated it's a house so there's stairs and no lifts but only 2 floors.
The room was also nice, good size and bathroom was clean with big shower.
The staff were very welcoming, very nice and helpful.
We loved our stay there.
The location is in Harlem but close to the subway (5mn walk) and we never felt unsafe. Central Park is 10/15 mn walk. Nothing
Depending on how you like your bed it can be a bit hard for some people but for us it was fine.
- Alina (9/5): Superb -
- Aylin (9/5): Would come again! Great hub for exploring upper manhattan. - Gorgeous old townhouse with loads of character. Felt like home immediately. Ron made me feel so welcome and provided useful info in and around the house. Decor in the room is not what I would chose and felt a bit mix and match rather than a style.
- Gideon (7/5): Good -
- Galila (10/5): Exceptional - Great location. Excellent public transportation.Close to Columbia University. A beautiful house with lots of character. Nice rooms with beautiful wooden floors. Has a kitchen were you can have your own breakfast with basic ingredients provided. The staff was helpful and accommodating. Feels more like a home than an hotel. We spent a full week at Northern lights andI would love to come back. It is a little difficult to climbe the stairs to the 2nd floor with a big heavy suitcase, but we managed it
- Sue (7/5): Overall a comfortable, character-filled, quiet place to stay that needs a bit of love to ensure it provides value for mo - A lovely character brownstone in Harlem, close to restaurants, public transport and an easy walk to Central Park. Very quiet.
Guests can use the kitchen to prepare and eat meals. The description of the room we booked on Booking.com didn’t match the room. The description was for a one bedroom apartment with a separate living area. We were given the garden room which is large but there is no separate living area. Nor is there a wall separating the bathroom from the bedroom. It’s just one big space. Nor is there a toilet door! We were offered a different room because of the bathroom issues but is was a lot smaller and would have been too cramped for our 6 night stay.
The premises are also a bit shabby and showing signs of lack of maintenance- lamps that don’t work, missing lights, cables sticking out of walls etc.
- Christina (9/5): Superb -
- Mark (10/5): Exceptional -
- Wilfred (8/5): Really friendly staff, cozy room in a central Harlem location - Very nice staff, cute communal space to hang out in Location, but this is also what we chose so not a fault of the hotel at all.
- Lyn (7/5): Friendly, Comfortable Guest House - The Northern Lights Mansion was one of the more unusual places I have stayed. My room was the spa room, it was really big and had a small outdoor patio. The room was clean and the bed comfortable. There was a nice common lounge room and the shared kitchen was beautiful. I met a really nice family from the Netherlands and chatted over coffee. Occupants need to bring their own food but coffee, milk and sugar are supplied. It was in walking distance (10 mins) of 2 subways and in a pretty safe area as far as I could tell. Check in was strange as the door was locked and no one answered when the door bell was rung. The Managers number was there so I rang, but someone then came to the door, checked me in and showed me around. Once in, you are supplied with a key to the front door and check out was easy. I found all the appliances such as the spa, the shower and coffee machine over complicated and impractical. I was glad the other occupants could show me what to do in the kitchen as I had forgotten half the instructions. I chose not to use the spa and the shower was fine once you had worked it out. Strangely the light switch for the bed lights was not next to the bed, I had to get up to turn them off. Also while there were charging points in the room they were also not near the bed. These are perhaps some of the difficulties of trying to convert an old Brownstone into a modern and unique guest house. All small things, which didn't interfere with the general comfort but gave a feeling that everything was a bit hap-hazard.
