Guest Reviews
- Bermuda Girl (9/5): Perfect In Every Way - All of it. The staff were amazing
The bed, bedroom and bathroom were perfect. Good safe spot for our bicycles.
- Simon (8/5): Always love staying here...been many times - Great location, good staff, nice room. Hotel very helpful in changing room dates at short notice. Dinner menu good, wine see below... The wine list with dinner is unusual. While its good to see some wines that you dont normally come across it would be nice to have a few staples like a good reasonably priced chardonnay, vioginer, gavi etc

- Jane (10/5): Perfect getaway in beautiful setting. - The Black Bull Inn is idyllically and at the same time centrally located, very charming with its original architecture and design, has a fabulous cuisine, and staff that goes above and beyond to make their guests welcome and comfortable. -
- Elizabeth (9/5): -
- Fay (9/5): Lovely and relaxing - Lovely room, bed, linen, food, staff. I prefer an enclosed loo.
- Simon (6/5): -
- Gaynor (9/5): -
- Mark (7/5): Disappointed - the stair case For £150.00 without breakfast ,very disappointed and underwhelmd, wires hanging out of the tv it just felt unfinished .the tea cups are designer, appreciated however the sainnd pattern on the rim was not .. lots of potential
- Aurelien (9/5): -
- Rich (8/5): Nice place and good food and beverages staff very nice - Lovely place and bar Room was a bit small but others were available
- Sydney (8/5): -
- Dudek (10/5): - The staff were welcoming and very helpful. The food and wine were excellent with enthusiastic, knowledgeable service. The room was comfortable and well equipped. Mo Absolutely no negatives.
- Karen (9/5): -
- Tracy (5/5): - Location central to the village. Really big comfy bed and bath in room It was way overpriced at £340 for 2 nights without a breakfast. No iron in room and had to go up and down 2 flights of stairs to get one. Not clear where the parking was. We booked for the purposes of booking the tasting menu which was a real selling point but the chef was away and we couldn't book it. We did eat in the restaurant but my meal was £36 and I had to send it back it was advertised as steak and 2 lumps of cold beef were on the plate that tasted of nothing. Shame really. In the room the lights were so dull you couldn't do your make up etc I had to use my phone torch.
- Gavin (10/5): - Food was excellent!!
- Juan (8/5): Really nice option - Roos with charm, nice restaurant
- Lisa (10/5): -
- graham (10/5): -
- Kirsten (10/5): Very cozy, nice rooms, great food! - Very cozy, nice rooms, great food. We will come back!
- Matt (6/5): Slightly disappointed. - Rooms have a modern style. Lovely sweeping staircase. Main bar and restaurant are lovely. Despite modern styling rooms are actually quite basic and not particularly clean or well maintained. Our room had a leaking door to the balcony and a very dusty and wonky main light fittings. Not a great problem, but for the price and advertised premium style of the BB we expected more.
The hallway leading to the room was rather run down with an untidy area with a chair and table that seeemed out of place with a premium hotel.
Check in was a little strange with the barman rather busy with Sunday lunch service and no where obvious to check in.
- Cameron (9/5): Nice hotel in a historic town - Traditional feel and friendly welcome
- Simon (7/5): -
- Carol (8/5): -
- Steffen (7/5): Schönes Hotel mit tollem, aber etwas hochpreisigen Restaurant. - Gemütliches Zimmer
Schönes Restaurant Relativ teuer
- nicola (9/5): Lovely! The Black Bull has a lovely atmosphere. It was a real treat to stay there. - All was nice Food was delicious but veg and vegan options were not that great for evening meal. It was fine for us as sometimes we eat fish, which was available and delicious. The one vegan option we tried was delucious but not really a full meal as was only veg and contained no protein foods.
- simon (9/5): -

- Sheila (10/5): Fabulous rooms and food at The Black Bull - Wonderful staff, food, decor and ambience. Really comfortable bed. Lovely clean room with super touches eg quality toiletries and complementary drinks and biscuits. Nothing
- Morgan (10/5): Staff great, food great, location perfect. I will be back - Cannot fault this in anyway. Staff were so friendly and great with dogs. The sharer beef brisket was amazing N/A
- Michelle (9/5): Enjoyable stay at the black bull - The property was renovated with high quality fixtures and fittings and maintained to a high quality. The room was very comfortable as was the bed. The bathroom was lovely with access to shampoo and shower gel. The room was made very cosy for us on checkin. The heating was on and welcomed on a cold wet winters day. We took our dog with us and there was a clean bed, towel and food bowls with a bag of treats waiting for her.
The coffee in the room was delicious as was the home made cookies left for us.
Breakfast was delicious but could not understand why we paid separate for coffee and juice and why it wasn’t all included in one price. I think we were given a different price as we booked with booking.com for dinner and breakfast.
Dinner was quite expensive for pie!!
There was no option on booking.com to book breakfast in the price.
- janet (7/5): - Couldn't fault the facilities and the staff. Made very welcome. When booking we knew it was pie night but weren't aware that we could only have pie! It was very nice but would have preferred something else, especially as it was £25, Cotswolds pricing, ie Farmer's Dog. The breakfast was charged at £13.95 plus glass of orange £2.40, tea at £3.15 making £19.50. We weren't advised that they were extra!!
- Gemma (10/5): -
- william (4/5): -
- Ellen (10/5): Had a lovely stay in the dales - Comfy spacious bed, large bathroom. Warm and cosy. Fantastic food Nothing
- Mary (10/5): Such an enjoyable stay. Room was excellent and staff were amazing. We will definitely be back! - Breakfast was lovely and enjoyed the room out back where we watched Rugby. James was very accommodating and attentive. Great time do many thanks. Can’t think of anything.
- Jane (10/5): Perfect little Inn nestled in a beautiful countryside - Location, atmosphere -
- Lisa (9/5): -
- Anne (9/5): -
- Jonathan (9/5): Enjoyed and would recommend - Very lovely inside and trendy decor. Yeh guy at breakfast was very rude! In contrast to the evening staff who were super friendly
- linda (8/5): A great way to end the day after a long drive. Great food, comfortable bed. Hot shower. Top marks. - The food was excellent with a nice atmosphere. It was home cooked not prepackaged. Top quality and the breakfast was excellent. Extensive drinks menu too. The English Sparkling wine was awful. I have had much better brands.
- Rob (1/5): -
- Lee (6/5): Average and overpriced. Lacks finesse. - Staff in the restaurant
Comfortable bed
Very good shower Not worth the price
Not that clean
Room tiered
Evening meal average considering price
Check in and check out poor, felt like an inconvenience.
- Susan (10/5): - Very comfortable bed. Wonderful complimentary refreshment tray with fresh milk and yummy biscuits. Lovely view from the bedroom window.
- Judith (10/5): - Warm friendly atmosphere, excellent food, the building itself ... everything, infact There was nothing we didn't like.
- Paul (10/5): Could hardly be better - Wonderful food - superb chef
- Rachel (9/5): Great overnight stay in luxurious gastropub. - Excellent quality food. Very comfortable beds. Good shower. We appreciated the still and sparkling water, and tea and coffee facilities in the room. Nothing
- Elissa-Marie (7/5): -
- Linda (8/5): - Really lovely staff Breakfast was very disappointing, the bread was inedible and tge porridge tasteless. Dinner was good but over priced.
- Malcolm (9/5): - Fine old pub/hotel Food very good but pricey.
- AlanCox (9/5): Fulfilled expectations for an overnight stay. Would certainly stay again - Comfortable room, cleanly presented. Although fronting main street, very quiet. No noise from adjoining rooms Only very minor criticism would be the use of sourdough bread for sandwiches and fried bread. Personal preference would be ordinary white or wholemeal
- Paul Booer (9/5): -
- Richard (10/5): -
- Jane (10/5): This is the type of accommodation where they know and care about you! - Location, ambience, lovely rooms, great food, friendly staff -
- Beattie (9/5): -
- Paul (8/5): -
- Seb (7/5): A boutique hotel in a beautiful location with excellent dining - A wonderful location, excellent dining and friendly staff. The bed was very comfortable and nice bathroom. I was also allowed to check in at 1.30pm. Good to see the pigs slumbering in the garden too! Being picky my room was a little noisy. Bad timing with the bin men emptying bins at 6.45am was unfortunate in that it was right outside my window!
- Teresa (8/5): -
- John (8/5): - Starter was excellent - Homus and buscuit Veg was tough
- Melissa (10/5): -
- fox (9/5): A relaxing enjoyable stay. - Being older we didn't want a big evening meal. The young lady said "leave it with me" and soon knocked on our room to tell us that the chef had come up with an alternative. It was delicious!
- Miriel (9/5): Bel hôtel mais aux tarifs trop élevés - Ambiance, personnel, décoration, restaurant Le prix trop élevé
Le prix aussi pour le chien 30£!!!
- Michelle (7/5): - The cookies in the bedroom was a nice touch. The decor was too dark, cold and lack atmosphere. Also someone else was able to unlock our door, who accidentally thought it was there room!!! Didn’t like the idea our room key was the same key to use for the other rooms of hotel. No designated reception area.
- Roger (4/5): Overpriced and overrated. - Room ok . On arrival ordered food and was given a buzzer as we were eating in the garden. Buzzer goes off and you go and collect your food. It never went off. Staff bought out meal and said it had been sitting there 10 mins! Although my partners meal was ok my burger was burnt on the outside.
In the room the wardrobe mirror was taped up. The smoke detector in the room would flash intermittently at night. Grouting around the bath black.
One evening 9.pm, noisy children running wild in the corridors.
Very dark hotel lighting very poor in ground floor corridors.
Restaurant decor, black and brown colors. Nice place to eat if you are a manic depressive!
- Grainne (7/5): A very nice village - Lovely location
Welcoming staff
Great welcome for our dog and lots of things in the room for him; bed, towel, bowls and treats Quite expensive
Limited vegetarian options
- Iw (10/5): It doesn't get much better than a stay at the Black Bull Inn - This was our second visit and the Black Bull Inn never disappoints. The staff are friendly and very helpful, rooms are stylish with very comfortable beds. The restaurant remains one of our favourites and this time the trout was to die for. The choice of wine is excellent and the bar has great beer and the possibility of playing Scrabble. Nothing
- James (8/5): Very good - Location Nothing
- Ruth (9/5): Great character inn in the heart of Sedbergh with a high class restaurant. - Staff friendly. High class restaurant with good wine list. Great selection gin and malt whiskies. Nice touch of home baked cookies and fresh milk in the rooms. I would have preferred an earlier breakfast.
- Dr (8/5): Very good -
- Graham (9/5): Superb -
- Helen (5/5): Opportunity to have a great stay, sorely wasted due to inadequate team - The location and room where great. The business have a fabulous opportunity to offer great service but sadly they fell extremely short. From serving champagne in wine glasses, to over charging and adding items to the bill, to having nobody willing to welcome you in to book in, not help fellow (much more mature guests) upstairs with their bags, that we felt compelled to step in. Food was poor and that’s being kind. They need a new team in there to turn it around as the opportunity to make a profit with great service could be there’s. Won’t be spending £600 on a room only basis for two nights there again Location
- Richard (10/5): Exceptional -
- Nadim (7/5): Nice stay but not 5 star! - V friendly and switched on staff made us feel very much at home and valued This really shouldn’t be advertised as a 5 star hotel. The bedroom was v small and cramped as was the bathroom. The standard of kit was not 5 star. However the bed sheets were crisp and clean. Common areas are also v tired. However the restaurant is excellent (try the shared steak!) and it probably has the most extensive wine list in all of Yorkshire! Cooked Breakfast is also excellent.
- Nicola (8/5): lovely spot and comfortable, stylish room. - Room is stylish and relaxing. Very nice touches like the teas and fresh milk. Staff were really friendly and helpful. Dog friendly too. Great location with other good pubs and nice shops nearby. Great walks.
- Lyn (4/5): Disappointing - The bathroom Room - very small and noisy. Manager did say he’d move us but we’d already used the towels etc and we were only staying one night. The fact is this room cost £188 which is exorbitant.
Coffee/tea facilities - meagre along with the cups
Prices at the bar - exhorbitant.
- Ian (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely hotel. Lovely room. Staff were excellent.
- Helen (9/5): Great way to spend an Easter Sunday. - Staff were lovely, food was really good. We had an issue with one evening meal and it was addressed straight away without fuss. Our room had a little balcony which was a lovely surprise. Also the real flower installation in the restaurant was amazing. Nothing... really lovely place.
- Andrew (8/5): Exceptional food, great clean room. - The food at the Black Bull Inn was exceptional, we loved the dining experience for each of the three nights we ate there. The location of the property is in a lovely village that is ideally placed for those who want to hike in the area, although some walks have a steep climb, but worth it the higher you go. Beautiful scenery. There wasn't much we didn't like. The service on the first night could have been better at the start, but improved towards the end of the meal, and the serving staff never really seemed to be too happy, two members of the serving staff did however lighten up the evenings.
- Linda (9/5): Fab place to delight your taste buds! - What a fabulous place! We had one of the best dinners in a long time! Great artistry in the cooking. Exceptionally tasty food and a very long and interesting selection of wines to choose from. The restaurant was beautifully filled by a local florist with branches of blossom and an amazing display of Spring flowers in the big window.
Very friendly staff everywhere – made to feel welcome.
The next morning we had a delicious breakfast which we – unfortunately – couldn’t linger over as we had to rush off. They took our order and rustled us up porridge and perfect scrambled eggs in no time.
A strong recommend.
- Robert (9/5): Superb -
- Rebecca (8/5): Very good -
- Sharon (7/5): Good - Thought the breakfast price should be included in the price of the overnight stay.
Couldn’t supply whole grain toast with scrambled egg. Had to accept toasted sourdough which is very. hard work toasted.
- John (9/5): Superb - Great food, nice room
- Laura (7/5): Good -
- Graham (8/5): Very good -
- Lisa (10/5): Wonderful place to visit - I loved the ambience in the bar with the delicious looking cakes and the roaring fire. All very welcoming. The food of course was wonderful. My Dad and husband both had the white beef pie and I wish I'd had it. Fantastic!! No mention of car park on the web site - this would have been helpful
- Joanne (9/5): Smashing hotel , great location as a Howgills base . Lovely chatty staff . - Room lovely with a great shower , superb bar n fire . Staff attentive . Restaurant food very classy but some dishes expensive .
Parking entrance takes careful moves , but its an olde building so can’t be helped !
- Phil (6/5): nice place but be prepared to pay! - great location Staff were excellent and very attentive but i have to say its overpriced and shocked to find that breakfast was not included in the £160/170 per night room rate (but i should have checked the booking i suppose).
food was good but again expensive.
- Ann (8/5): A good restful short holiday - Lovely olde worldly comfortable bed, good shower and somewhere to park your car It was a bit cold at times
- Kate (10/5): Exceptional -
- Alexandra (8/5): Very good - Great location, comfortable rooms and delicious food. Tight turn into the car park 😬
- Rhona (10/5): Exceptional -
- Catherine (7/5): Dog friendly room, lovely!! Menu, limited, breakfast let it down due to not having an alternative to sour bread mainly - The room was very nice and the bathroom It wasn’t the property it was the food. Breakfast wasn’t very good. First morning we both have poached eggs on toast. The bread was very stodgy, didn’t seem cooked enough. My eggs were also not cooked enough, snotty. 2nd morning we asked if we could have different bread at breakfast but told there wasn’t an alternative, and the sour bread is made every morning. We feel there should be an alternative to sour bread, not everyone likes it. Also, the rest of the breakfast wasn’t very hot or cooked well.
- Finlay (8/5): Very good -
- D (10/5): A real gem - Absolute 5 star hotel and team of staff. Service, food and room all top notch and cant wait to come back
- David (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jon (10/5): Exceptional -
