Guest Reviews
- Gergő (10/5): - We loved our stay at Barranquero Hotel. It's located in the forest, only a 10-15 minutes walk from Tayrona National Park's main entrance (El Zaino). It is close to the main road with frequent bus connection to/from Santa Marta yet quiet and peaceful. Amazing bird concert from sunrise. We have seen toucans on our first and tamarins on our last early morning from the balcony. Staff are friendly and amazing.
Passing the 2 shallow rivers is not difficult and adds to the fun part. Cocoa tour option close.
We were very happy with our choice, highly recommended!
- Aine (10/5): Our favourite spot in Colombia! - This was our favourite accommodation in Colombia! It’s a total paradise. The property is right beside a beautiful sandy river that you can cool off in and explore. The host also recommended some great rock pools that we could walk to nearby on really beautiful trails. The place has been created with such love and the gardens and decoration are beautiful. The hosts are so helpful and cook delicious food! Couldn’t recommend this spot more!
- Tobias (10/5): - We had a great stay here. It's a very nice lodge that's accessible by 10min walk from the main road (involves crossing a shallow river). The hosts were very welcoming and friendly and helped us fix the air conditioning late in the evening. The place itself is very clean and well maintained and the room was spacious and nicely designed. The breakfast was very good and filling. It's a short walk to the el zaino Tayrona entrance for those planning to go there and they kindly let us leave our bags with them whilst we were in the park. Overall a very nice stay in a beautiful and peaceful place!
- Juliette (10/5): A nice retreat with a little bite of french touch! - Everything : the location away from the main road, the garden, the room, the food and the hosts. N/A
- Lourdes (10/5): -
- Ana (10/5): - Unique experience in the middle of the jungle. The rooms are big and have air conditioning. All the staff was so nice and helpful. I enjoy everything
- Sandra (9/5): - Prachtige lodge midden in de jungle. Kamer is ruim en netjes ! Niks
- Yuting (10/5): A great experience. - Everything. We had to cross two rivers to get to the property, it wasn’t that hard, definitely recommend to come here with light luggages. It is located literally in the jungle, wonderful waking up with the sound of the nature - birds, river flow. Facilities are amazing considering the location, though no hot water for the shower, we don’t mind that much. Close to the Tayrona entrance. We definitely would like to come stay here again. Nothing.

- Devi (10/5): Beautiful setting, hotel with a difference, wonderful hosts. - Laurent and Bruno were wonderful hosts. The hotel has character - with many artistic touches that give the hotel a special atmosphere. It is set next to a wide, rocky stream in the jungle, away from the road, so it is a quiet and beautiful setting. The food is excellent, with welcome variety of international dishes. Bruno has more than 40 years of experience as a horse trek guide and cares for animals exceptionally well. We would not have considered a horse trek in Colombia or Peru because of concern for how the animals are treated and environmental impact in parks like Tayrona or the Inca trail, but we went for a lovely horse ride up into the mountains behind Tayrona with Bruno. We were so glad we found the Barranquero!
- Stephanie (9/5): Magical rainforest retreat! - Beautiful location, lovely people, fantastic ethos. What a pleasure to share our breakfast time with such an array of colourful birds. Swimming in the river was bliss! We didn't dislike anything. But if we had to make one suggestion, it would be to put a rail on the ladder up to the mezzanine floor. Climbing up to operate the air con was a little hair-raising!
- barbara (10/5): - Verblijf , midden in de jungle , schoon comfortabel. Niks
- Cristhian (10/5): -
- Matthias (10/5): - Amazing jungle getaway :-)! Loved everything about our stay here, the hosts, the food, the accommodation - 10/10 would come again!
- Jerome (10/5): A nice place - The room was nicely decorated. The air conditioning was excellent and the food was healthy. Absolutely no complaints.
- Pedro (10/5): A truly hidden jewel near El Zaino. - The atmosphere of the hotel is amazing. Nature is fused with every corner. Everything here, from the keys to the room to each flavor in the meals, was carefully designed to provide a comfortable and relaxing experience..
The staff and owners were very friendly and kind with us. The activities and amenities are also worth exploring.
I particularly liked the sound of the river by the dining area, the music selection, the comfort of the beds, and above all, the air conditioning!!.
Make sure you call in advance to coordinate your arrival. Our experience was great. No bad comments.
- Daniele (8/5): This was a gorgeous property with warm and helpful staff, but did get a big buggy! - The owners, Bruno and Laurence, and their employee David were absolutely lovely, helpful, and warm. The property is stunning with gorgeous trees, plants, and birds all over the place. The food and drinks were good and made to order whenever I wanted. The location is perfect, right on the river and walking distance from the Tayrona entrance. The rooms were very pretty and comfortable, with tons of great spaces to sit and enjoy the nature, both inside and out. I hope to return again one day for a horse ride! Unfortunately, the bugs did start to infiltrate the room after a big rain and I got a bit overwhelmed. I don't mind a few bugs getting in, but they were everywhere. I recommend upgrading the doors to prevent bugs from getting in through gaps between and under the doors. The owners were very helpful in resolving the situation and making sure I was comfortable, which I greatly appreciated.
- Alessia (10/5): Paradise spot - Very friendly and helpful staff. After our stay they offered us free ride thru the river.
The room was spacious and comfortable.
Surroundings were fabulous. Breathtaking views on the river :) Nothing, this place was wonderful
- Stefan (10/5): Exceptional - Great accommodation, spacious rooms (air conditioning) in a spacious, well-kept, quiet complex on different levels with a hammock on the veranda (ideal for bird watching) on the other side of the river, about 1 km from the entrance to the national park. Possadas San Rafael bus stop on National Road 90, 500 meters to the hotel. The river (Rio Piedra) can easily be crossed on foot when the water is knee-deep. The accommodation is well signposted. The very nice, absolutely uncomplicated owner Pola (speaks French, English and Spanish) sends directions via WhatsApp. Her husband also picks you up in an off-road vehicle. Excellent, hearty breakfast and dinner. Very tasty dishes, with good value for money. We felt very comfortable there.
- Harris (10/5): Loved this place - I stayed here for 3 nights with my sister and its an
incredible place. You really do feel properly immersed in nature and the rooms are comfy, food is yum and theres a nice chill out area. However, Be warned the river is not small ! But it kindof added to the sense of adventure and if you walk further up there is a bridge but it does take longer
- Sarah (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely guesthouse close to the El Zaino entrance of Tayrona national park, surrounded by jungle and rivers. The rooms were spacious and really well-equipped with a big windowfront and there‘s a nice restaurant/chill out-area. The hosts put a lot of love into the space, they were super kind and served delicious breakfast and food. There some walks and hikes to beaches and waterfalls. Just be aware that you need to walk a bit and through a river to get there. The hosts can send someone to help you.
- Ivan (10/5): Exceptional - Everything was perfect, the location, the surroundings, the nature, and above all, the staff , from the owners to each one who works there.
- Garryck (10/5): I enjoyed my stay at Barranquero Hotel. Paula and her husband are very gracious hosts and clearly have put a lot of work - I enjoyed my stay at Barranquero Hotel. Paula and her husband are very gracious hosts and clearly have put a lot of work into creating a warm, comfortable and welcoming place.
January is supposed to be a dry month in Colombia, but NOT this year. They were saying that in their 10 years, they had never seen it like it was.
You have to wade through the river to get to the hotel. This I think is part of the charm. It was only calf to thigh high at most when I first crossed. My suggestion is to have Paula send one of the workers to show you the best way across or if you’re lucky, someone else who knows the sand bars under the water will be going across in front of you. Also be very mindful if it is going to rain. If the rain comes, it becomes too dangerous to cross. There is a foot bridge around a 15 min walk upriver that is passable when the water is high. I had to take it the morning I left because it rained most of the night and started up again in the morning.
The included breakfast is great and I had dinner there two of my nights and was impressed.
I really enjoyed the room I had. You got to it down a short pathway and it was spacious and surrounded by lush tropical vegetion making it feel very private.
- Oliver (10/5): Tranquility in the jungle - An amazing place to stay with the beautiful grounds, large clean rooms, and quiet location except for the sound of the river. Super food! And the staff and owners are so friendly and approachable and ready to help. It really is a relaxing place! Note: to get there from the main road, you have to walk through a river (which got up to thigh-level after some heavy rain) but one of the guys can help with your bag if it's too difficult to carry across on your own. If you have a rucksack you'll be fine.
- Caitlin (9/5): Superb -
- Benjamin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kathryn (10/5): A beautiful and tranquil place beside a river amongst lush gardens - This place is beautiful. Our room was on the ground floor with its own patio with 2 loungers and a hammock. From the room, which has huge sliding glass doors, you look out to a lush jungle of a garden. It is so quiet apart from the noise of birds and other creatures. The food in the restaurant is really good and delicious cocktails. The staff here are really kind and helpful, and the owners go out of their way to make sure you have a really lovely stay. There is a river next to the hotel with shallow water with lots of swimming opportunities and rocks to sit on, as well as walking trails beside the river. I would have liked to have stayed longer. It's a very relaxing place. Nothing
- Brigitte (10/5): Exceptional - We loved the place so much that we stayed for one more night than planned. Incredibly beautiful garden and rooms in the middle of nature. Everything amazingly clean and comfortable. Just 15 minutes walk to the main entrance of Tayrona El Zaino. Also the included breakfast was great and they always asked you if you want more coffee, or more bread, which never happened to us in Colombia before. Pola and Fernando really know how to deal with tourist and how to fulfill our wishes and expectations. We had dinner always there, since the food was of excellent quality too. It is worth to pay a little bit more, because you really get more than you expect here. Close by there are beautiful places to swim like 'la poza del amor' and beautiful beaches you can easily reach by bus like 'costeño beach', we recommend both very much too. We loved crossing the 2 rivers to get to the house but we understand that it is something that some tourists would not want to do. It is not dangerous at all, one river is of under knee level and the other is just above your feet. But even here they are so friendly and kind that they asked us before per booking if we needed help to cross the rivers they would have sent somebody, but travelling with rucksack we didn't need any help.
- Caitlin (10/5): Exceptional - We loved our short stay here. We were greeted by the really friendly staff members, who were so helpful whilst we were there, and shown to our room (we were able to check in earlier than the time stated which was great). The room was a really good size with a huge balcony and AC, a must in the Tayrona heat. We ate all of our meals here, they’re not cheap but the portions are big and the food is really good. They also have a bar with a wide variety of drinks available. Breakfast was good and plentiful and included in the price of the room. The owners are really nice and even took us to the entrance of the national park one morning in their car. Very kind. We thought the location was great, it’s right on the river (which you can dip in) and completely in nature so all you can hear are the sounds of birds. We also arrived here easily using the public bus from Santa Marta, it’s walkable from the bus stop in about 10 minutes). Would definitely recommend. Not a problem for us but worth noting that you do have to walk through the river to get to the accommodation. They will help if you need it though. When we were there, the water was low and it wasn’t difficult to cross the water, even with our big backpacks.
- Fabian (9/5): Superb -
- Dale (10/5): Exceptional -
- Maria (10/5): Highly recommend this place and plan to return! - This is a slice of paradise. It was perfect to hear the sounds of the jungle and to birdwatch. We swam in the natural swimming pool in the river nearby which was wonderful. Bruno and his wife were very helpful in sharing ideas of the many activities we could do. We loved being part of protecting this beautiful piece of nature. We also enjoyed the massages available there and the good food and drinks. Very friendly staff!
- Eva (8/5): Very good -
- Ismail (9/5): Superb -
- Ursula (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful tranquil location and warm welcoming staff Clearer directions in advance of arrival to assist with finding the hotel
- James (10/5): Exceptional -
- Nienke (10/5): Perfect location and great food and staff - Very nice staff and good food. Breakfast and dinner were really nice and we loved the cocktails. Everything was really clean. But above al, the location was amazing. The place is in the middle of the jungle with alot of colorful birds and fantastic surroundings. The river where you can swim (/float in dryseason) is only a minute away and is a perfect replacement for a swimming pool (but then you are all by yourself). Would definitely recommend!
- Scarlet (9/5): The best, couldn’t have been better - Everything, the location was magic, staff were super lovely and the vibe was perfect Nothing, it was all amazing. You do need to bring your own shampoo though
- Jaime (1/5): The staff threatened to kill us with a shotgun - Feb 20, 2024-
*IMPORTANT PLEASE READ- HOTEL STAFF THREATENED TO MURDER US WITH A SHOT GUN - DANGEROUS DO NOT STAY HERE*
Stayed at Hotel Barranquero one night (2/19-2/20) due to its proximity to Tayrona Park
1. We arrived about 7pm on 2/19 (after dark) due to flight and bus schedules. They don’t tell you that you have to walk through a small town and across 2 rivers (through the water) in the dark to access the hotel
2. We asked on 2/19 if anyone would be working the front at 6:30 in the morning for checkout - they assured us yes multiple times.
3. MOST IMPORTANT PART- we arrived to the front desk/bar area at 6:30am to check out. The guy in the kitchen said he’d get his boss and she would come in 10 minutes. 20 minutes later, there was still no one there to check us out. We informed the worker that if no one came by 7 we really need to leave and that they have our card on file (we booked online) and can charge the room fee to the card. Him: “then who is going to pay?” Us:”you have our card on file” Him: “if you don’t pay you’ll get shot” Us: “you’re threatening to kill us?” Him: “This is Colombia that’s how it works here” *in Spanish to the kid next to him* “go get the shot gun”
4. Anyway, obviously as I’m writing this review we are still alive, but I would highly recommend to not stay here especially if you value your safety. It’s not fun being being held hostage at a hotel and threatened to be murdered. It’s also very far from anything else and secluded with no cell service so if they did actually hurt us, no one would ever know, which is very VERY scary. The fact that they have a shotgun in the back to kill their guests is insane.
5. The other reviews are good so I’m not sure if they are fake, forced, or what, but be warned. Yes the hotel is pretty, but it is not worth your life.
- Liliane (10/5): Beautiful place surrounded by nature 5 stars, exceptional staff, friendly people and good food ! - Very quiet in the middle of the forest next to a little river …. Paradise !
- Kirsty (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely quiet spot in the forest with nice local walks and rivers to wade/swim in. Room, restaurant food, and ambience all very good.
- Chloe (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing rooms and balcony. Great setting. Tasty food. 100% recommend.
- Gui (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anna (10/5): Beautiful location, relaxing experience - The loveliest location, beautiful, serene and so relaxing! The walk across the little river is a special touch. The food is delicious and the location is perfect 🙌 We did a little hike and got to enjoy the river. The room was very comfortable and had everything we needed. Highly recommend ☺️
- Mandy (6/5): Strange place - The place is very beautiful. The food was good. You have to cross two rivers by foot to access the hotel. The dogs are very uncomfortable.
- Steffen (6/5): Pleasant - The Rooms are nice and big and the property looks nice. You have to cross two rivers by foot to come here. As there was rain the other day the hotel told us that a 4x4 is not able to cross the river and therefore should simply walk. The A/C wasn’t really working so it was just 1°C lesser than outside. There were no mosquito nets. The staff was just ok - not that friendly. There are almost none restaurants or supermarkets nearby (you have to cross the river) and the water costs 2500 per Liter refill which is too much in my opinion. Also the prices in the restaurant were quite high and there are not that many options (just 1 for vegetarians)
- Leathers (10/5): Exceptional -
- Alejandro (10/5): Exceptional -
- Zbigniew (10/5): Exceptional - Breakfast was very good - the location and the fittings of the room are exceptional. All was very good

- Daniel (10/5): - I visited Barranquero Hotel with my 5-year old daughter. Laurence and Bruno were super hosts and accommodated us. They provided us with suggestions and activities adapted for the family. The place was quiet and absolutely beautiful. We keep beautiful memories of our visit there.
- Sarah (10/5): Beautiful and unique stay in the jungle. The sound of nature and the nearby river cannot be beat. Highly recommend! - the location is incredible! such adorable details and decorations all around the property. the owners were so friendly and helpful. the staff at the restaurant were very nice, especially Maye. I got slight allergies from the blanket on the bed.

Laurence & Bruno are wonderful hosts - welcoming & helpful. All the staff are great - smiley & happy. Great vibe amongst all the team.
Food is yum - lots of great options. Best breakfast in Colombia!
Great music playing in the restuarant every night!
Lots of hammocks & sunbeds to chill out.
Great walking, hiking & running trails all around the hotel.
The best bit is the river crossing on arrival - adds to the whole adventure. Loved it! Book it! Nothing - 10/10
- Ezflaw (10/5): Outstanding and Unique Property - Great property in the jungle surrounded by nature and bordered by a river. Totally safe and quiet. Staff was professional, courteous, helpful and efficient. It is easy to walk across the shallow river, but if you need transportation from the main road, Bruno will provide it. If you are taking a bus to or from the location, he will also explain and help you determine how to do this.
The room was amazing and unique. Very practical with bedside tables, good lighting and plenty of electrical outlets. The food in the restaurant was very good. There is not a single thing that we disliked about the experience.
- Jean (10/5): a must stay while in tairona park - location is wonderful , so quiet and genuine , food is great and very well priced nothing
- Dom (10/5): Anazing stat at the beautiful Barranquero Hotel - Barranquero is an amazing place, the grounds are beautiful and it set next to the river amongst the trees so there is lots of nature. The staff are so lovely and helpful, always very welcoming and offering recommendations during your stay. The food in the restaurant is the best we’ve had during our trip so far and the rooms are also probably the nicest we’ve had too! It’s a super relaxing and laid back place and Laurence and Bruno have created such an awesome vibe that we hope to return soon Nothing!
- Dounia (10/5): Exceptional - Great location, relaxing atmosphere and amazing staff, warmly recommend!
- Fran (10/5): Exceptional - The French couple who own this place are really wonderful hosts, the rooms are comfortable, food fantastic and there is plenty to do in the area including hiking trails and beaches, plus it is close to Tayrona Park entrance. The gardens are beautiful and the location is very peaceful right by the river
- Miguel (10/5): Bruno & Laurence were excellent like their hotel - Jungle Mosquitos
- Raphael (10/5): Exceptional - So far my favorite hotel in the world, without overexaggerating. Amazing food, the kitchen made us so happy. Extremely friendly workers and owners. The Hotel is in the middle of nature, you can go to the nice river and we even saw birds and monkeys during breakfast. All in all perfect for couples to relax.
- Brook (6/5): Lovely property, avoid room #1 - Wonderful riverside location, exotic entry by crossing a river. Comfortable facilities for outdoor dining. Large room, comfortable bed, privacy with your own hammock. Tasty meals, pleasant staff. My room, #1, had bed bugs. They bit me the second night I was there while I was reading in bed with the light low. I caught two. I then searched the mattress and found more. It was late and I couldn't get through by phone to the staff due to poor signal, so I slept outside the room. The hotel owner in the morning denied what I said, even after I showed her the remnants of two dead bed bugs, and accused me of being dirty and making it up to get the room for free. Fortunately the woman who runs the front desk was more sympathetic and paid attention and said she would instruct her workers to take steps to get rid of the bedbugs.

- Marc (10/5): Bravo!! Original, unforgettable experience, surrounded by unspoiled nature - The French owners of the Barranquero have created a laid-back, comfortable lodging and dining experience that is original, relaxed and unforgettable. The hotel is very well-designed. Our room was extremely clean, comfortable, and spacious. WiFi is excellent, especially considering how isolated the hotel is. It was a perfect place to unwind, surrounded by glorious nature and few people. No complaints at all. Truly, the staff was wonderfully flexible, informative, affable and attentive. The food was delicious. Dinner took awhile to be served, but I did not come all the way out to the jungle to be in a rush. The complimentary breakfast was substantial, tasty, first-rate. The hot chocolate was as good as in France!! Bruno, the owner, picked us up and drove us back and forth across the shallow rivers to and from the main highway in his Jeep, chatting with us amiably. He and his wife Laurence and the staff (Cynthia, Daniel) were all kind and accommodating. I loved it. Plus, the hikes along and across the river and to the waterfall were terrific, unspoiled nature experiences. No crowds, hardly anyone really. Just what I was looking for.

- Adrian (10/5): Exceptional - The location was amazing, in the middle of nature with a river to swim, we walked along the riverto tayrona park. The crossing of the river was an extra fun experience, we were with two people in their 60s and they loved it. We left very early before 7 but that was no problem for the staff to bring us to the other side of the river. The staff will do everything they can to make your stay the best. The food was the best we ate in colombia, my venezuelan father in law almost cried because the sopa de lentejas was so good and reminded him of his mother. My family will never forget these special days in your hotel, thank you so much.
- Xu88 (5/5): Crossing two rivers without a bridge is a No-Go - The staff is really nice and speaks English.
The breakfast as well as the food from the restaurant was delicious.
The landscape was beautiful at the river and it was quiet. It is an absolutely No-Go that it is not written in the description of the hotel that two river need to be crossed (wading, not by a bridge). We had luck that we were there at a dry season and had aquashoes with us - the water still was higher than our knees. But what on earth will happen if there is a thunderstorm or heavy rain, when the current is high? Well we are young and fit, but what about older people. Fortunately, you are driven by a 4WD if you have luggage, but what will happen if the 4WD is defective?
Because you are in a jungle, there were many insects coming into the room although the door was closed. They could do more with the cleaning, because we found the soap of the guest before us on the shower floor.
The price in the restaurant was higher than outside and you must know that there are no other opportunities for diner without crossing the river, especially if it is dark outside.
For paying with credit card they charge you an extra 10 % fee, what we did not saw in any hotel before in Columbia. There are no ATMs at all in the village, so that you need to have enough money with you before.
- Nicholas (8/5): Very good - Staff and owners are great. Food is amazing. Location with a lot of trails around and river etc. Air conditioning in our first room was broken and in the second it barely worked so the room was hot during the day.
- Michael (7/5): Adventurous, fun and great staff and great food! - Cinitia and the staff were wonderful, Breakfast was generous (free) and the dinners there were great and had a full bar as well. The room was big and roomie and the we had a hammock. The grounds were beautiful! Well, we has to walk through 2 rivers to get to the property and the wifi was only in the eating area but the worst was not having hot water which ironically would be the reason for me not stay there again but for my husband it was no wifi in our room.
- Angela (10/5): very cozy, great food and service from the owners and staff - beautiful and tranquil place surrounded by nature
- Elizabeth (9/5): Superb - Thank you so much for everything! Cynthia takes great care of you and is super attentionate! Owners are welcoming. The river crossing is fun and loads to do around. Made our stay unforgettable
