Guest Reviews
- Philip (10/5): Perfect. Orangutans a bonus. - Everything. It was just perfect. A great view from the balcony with monkeys running all over surrounding roofs. Very clean, extremely comfortable, the bed was great. The staff were wonderful, very friendly and helpful, even arranging for my orangutan trek and onward travel. Would have loved to have stayed long in this amazing place.
- Elisabet (10/5): Really good - The room was everything we were looking for. Also they help us storaging part of our luggage when we were out for jungle trek, that was much appreciated 👏 Everything was good 😁
- Alessandro (7/5): -

- jessica mariana (10/5): Excelente - The stay was excellent. We stayed there before and after the 2-day, 1-night orangutan trek. Great location, comfortable room, spacious and clean bathroom, a large balcony with an amazing view, and very good Wi-Fi signal.
- Eric (10/5): - Het prachtige uitzicht over Bukit Lawang en de jungle.
- Clémence (10/5): Excellent - We had the double room with balcony. You don't really see the river but you have a nice view anyway. The bed is comfy, there is good wifi, the big bathroom has hot shower and everything is clean. The owner and her staff are really nice and helpful. I was sick one day and they went to the pharmacy and brought me medicine. It's not suitable for old or disabled people because there are high stairs to reach the rooms.
- Jasper (9/5): Geweldig - Uitzicht en faciliteiten Geen warm water, veel beestjes en hoge trappen haha
- Adrienne (10/5): I would always come back to stay at Hotel Orang Utan! - Nice, big and clean rooms with balcony. We did not hear any music even though it was party time down the river in the village. The staff was super friendly and welcoming. Made sure our luggage was safe during our trek and organised laundry for us after it. Multiple options for breakfast, loved their lemon tea! Nothing
- Tamara (10/5): Great room, lovely staff, amazing tours, laundry service and great (vegan) food. - We loved everything about our stay, beautiful clean family room with amazing rainforest view from the balcony. The hotel offers very convenient laundry service and is run by the most kind family who arranged the tours and (airport) transport for us. The 2D/1N jungle tour was more wonderful than we could have imagined beforehand, we were lucky enough to meet the orang utan and many more animals! Also the tuk tuk village tour was very enjoyable and interesting. We loved swimming in the river which is very close to the hotel and the food was great with the menu including vegan options as well. Definitely a ten out of ten! Don’t hesitate to book here! We loved everything, there was the occasional gecko in the house and therefore there was some gecko poop on the floor and as said in other reviews there are little monkeys everywhere. We did expect this in the jungle and for us it contributed to our overall experience. Also we had to walk a steep stair to get to the room but this was also expected and no problem for us and the view from up there was more than worth the climb.
- Adrienne (10/5): -
- Chelle (1/5): Not safe for solo travellers - The area around the hotel.
Great view (if you ignore all of the construction) - Slippery clay slope to enter through a construction site.
- no privacy, men working all around the room can see straight into the shower, toilet and bedroom.
- running water to the room stopped half way through a shower and noone available to assist until next morning
- construction starting just metres from the room each morning very loud and very early, lasting all day.
- found termites eating the bedframe
- sheets in bed had a curry smell
- only person in the hotel, unsafe for a woman on her own as everyone in the area will know you are there and alone.
- asked to discuss the issues with the owner multiple times but no response.

- Begoña (9/5): - Acogedor, buenas vistas, agua caliente. El personal muy amable. Se come bien.
Personnel adorables
Vue magnifique sur bukit lawang
Je recommande
Les plats y sont excellents
- NOEMI (9/5): Fenomenal - Limpio y amplio Que no tuviera wifi

- Flip (9/5): Nice stay, friendly people. Recommended - Nice hotel with friendly people. Daisy organised the hiking and rafting tour for our family consisting of three adults and three kids (ages 6,6 and 10). And we made a nice three hour tuktuk tour through the village to see the rice fields, palm sugar and tempeh and tofu production. A good way for our children to see how people in Indonesia live and work. Daisy also served nice pancakes and porridge for breakfast. Rooms are nice and spacious, but the stairs to get there are steep! Not for people with limited mobility.
- alison (8/5): Great location and lovely people. - The staff and the location The monkeys! But what do you expect when staying up in the trees? It’s their home but there were alot and very noisy on our roof. Definitely wear ear plugs. You cannot keep your windows and doors open. We have intruded into their world. So we cannot complain.
We had the pent house/family room. The steps were tough. Harder than my trek! But worth the view and our room was the coolest with a good ceiling fan. My children had the lowest rooms and they were quite hot but they liked their rooms.
- Matteo (8/5): Welcome to the Jungle with our jungle boy ❤️ - Eravamo nella stanza più alta e, nonostante i vari gradini (che ci hanno tenuti allenati), la vista sulla giungla era esagerata, così come il fatto di essere totalmente immersi nella natura -
- Patricia (8/5): Fijn verblijf om de jungle te bezoeken. - Mooie locatie met prachtig uitzicht. We hadden het bovenste appartement, de klim is echt stevig. Het was in de nacht enorm warm.
- christornoe (10/5): Warmest hospitality at Hotel Orangutan - The charming hotel and wonderful hostess (Daisy) were unforgettable. We were treated with kindness, helpfulness and had the best meals at Hotel Orangutan.
Nichts
- Yannick (9/5): Great place, really nice staff! - Nice place close to the river. Beautiful view. You have to walk some steep stairs to get to your room. Tip: while checking in ask for a room without the roof. The monkeys will keep you up the entire night (like they did to us). Staff can’t help it of course, but it was a pretty tough trekking with 2 hours of sleep.
- atul (6/5): - Bedroom clean.
No soap or shampoo in bathroom.
Very pleasant and friendly staff.
Food excellent quality.
- Nancy (9/5): Wonderful stay at Orangutan Hotel - Wonder place to stay for our Jungle trekking adventure. The staff was so kind and helpful. Loved the macaque monkeys passing through the hotel property. There is only cold water showers which were refreshing. To get to your room you must climb steep stairs that were beautifully made of stone. Loved everything about this place!
- EvieF98 (6/5): Good value, basic hotel - We stayed here for 3 nights including a 1N2D trek. It’s very good value for money and the staff are absolutely lovely and couldn’t have done more for us.
The rooms are spacious and have amazing views of the valley. Basic facilities but it’s in the middle of the jungle so didn’t expect more. Beds are clean and comfy, could do with another pillow each. You can’t drive to the hotel so you are dropped off 20mins walk away which with suitcases and the heat was a struggle but would be the same with any hotel in the area, not clear when booking that’s the case (if you have a backpack you can get a motorbike taxi). We also woke up to poo all over the floor from geckos and on clothes if you hung them out. Keep everything in suitcases. The rooms aren’t cleaned during your stay which might be a nice addition.
The main issue we had was the noise. Every Saturday night there is live music opposite and since the windows are mesh and it’s in a valley you can hear everything until 3am and it was like being at a live concert. The other nights the ‘night club’ next door was really loud. Unfortunately this did mean we got barely any sleep in the nights we were here.
We organised the trek with the hotel and whilst our guide was so lovely, there wasn’t so much information on the plants and wildlife. Our only sighting of Orangutans came 20 mins into the trek. If you do spot them make sure to spend as long as you can with them as there isn’t a guarantee of spotting more. The Orangutans are semi-wild, having been descendants of a former rehabilitation centre and so a bit more tolerant to human presence. The overnight stay in the jungle was pretty poor, again I expected basic but it was really quite dirty and the mat you slept on stunk of damp and sweat. Unfortunately my partner also got horrific food poisoning whilst here. Our guide was so kind in helping us the next day and carried his bag as well as his own. The other camps looked nicer than ours but they really only needed slight adjustments/airing out to make them more sleepable. All in all the hotel is nice and a good base to explore Bukit Lawang and the staff are all lovely.
- Hugo (10/5): Unforgettable experience - Fantastic location and extremely friendly staff -
- Laura (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sheldon (10/5): Exceptional - Great location in Bukit Lawang, close to shops and restaurants and not a far walk to the main car-accessible road. Beautiful views of the jungle from balcony while maintaining privacy. Really cool bathrooms with rock features and big views out in the jungle. Monkeys roaming around. Staff friendly and helpful. Just note that some of the rooms are up steep stairs
- Lara (9/5): Fantastic stay - Room was spacious and clean
Staff were friendly
Leant me a phone charger which was super kind! The local party went on late and I could hear it for a while.
- Katia (8/5): Bonne adresse - Chambre spacieuse et propre, jolie vue sur la rivière.
- Jenny (8/5): Very good -
- Giel (10/5): Exceptional - Very friendly personal, very big rooms with a nice balcony, nice clean bathroom with a hot shower. Perfect stay Nothing!
- Jada (9/5): Lovely guest house, great location, amazing friendly staff - Desi the manager is so friendly and helpful, she and her team are always smiling and ready to help. Communication before and during my stay was excellent and she organised my jungle trek for me with a great guide called Ronnie and my onward transport. The room was simple yet lovely with a nice view and balcony. They also provide a drinking water fountain in the room which is a nice touch. For my third night I moved to a room higher up, but unfortunately the monkeys seemed to love it too! The cheeky rascals took over the balcony so I couldn’t really use it and I could hear them playing/fighting on the metal roof and on the balcony all night! I suppose it is the jungle after all, but I much preferred my first room that was on the middle level - I slept so peaceful there :)
- Jenny (9/5): Superb -
- Jodie (8/5): Be prepared for the stairs. Nice location. - Nice location and friendly staff. We had a great trek to the orangutans. The stairs to our room were quite a decent climb but a good view at the end. Beware of the monkeys. We had two unfriendly encounters on the way to our room. We had to fend them off with our jandels. Quite scary.
- Lusiana (9/5): - - The room is huge with a nice view from the balcony.
The rooms were comfortable and spacious.
The staff were friendly, helpful, and welcoming especially Daisy and Ady. Niente
- Yvonne (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ivo (9/5): Generally it was very pleasent stay in this hotel. Staff was helpful and tried to give their best. - Place is actually in excellent. Basically everything is nearby, good restaurants, small shops to take sweeties or buy souveniers. Breakfest in the hotel was also good, we took pancakes with bananas and fresh coffee. Room cleanless would have been better. While step in to the room, it look nice and clean, but when started to look around, appeared that dust-balls were seen under the bed and in the corners.
- Yvonne (10/5): Exceptional -
- Juniarti (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely stay , comfortable and very clean.the view from the balcony was amazing and the staff also very friendly and helpful. We did a day trekking and tubing, I had lots of fun to see the orang utan up so close, can't get better than that.even though I felt over so many times to get to it 🙈 , it's so worth it.And also thumbs 👍 for our guide bang jerry and his partner (so sorry I can't remember his name ) they both are amazing, knowledgeable and friendly, also very patient with me as I am taking so many breaks during our trip to see the orang utan. I definitely recommend staying at the hotel orangutan and Hopefully I will be back to Indonesia again soon. Keep up the good work and thank you. None
- HIRONORI (10/5): - Calm and peaceful place at the enterance of the national park. Good staff kinldy arrange pickup service from airport and trekking tour. Enjoy your great experience!
- Sean (10/5): Relaxing village with amaxing Orangutan Trek. - Amazing hotel, great value for money. Rooms are large with feature four poster bed and the bathroom wall was the rock from the hillside the hotel is built against. Large balcony with a great view of the jungle opposite and glimpses of the river. Yes, there are steps to the rooms... but if you're here for the trekking I'm sure you'll be fine. No food in the hotel for us as we were here in the quiet season. Not a problem as there are local restaurants nearby. Worth checking out the other side of the river for food and drinks too. Staff were all helpful and freindly but a special mention to Monang. Humble and funny a great guide and a very warm person in general. His jungle foods on the trek were works of art. 10/10 Having to leave.
- Marla (10/5): Exceptional -
- Vicky (8/5): An adventure in the jungle with great staff who made us feel very welcome - The views, the staff, the food and the service There are a lot of monkeys who played on the roof all night which was noisy, but we were in the jungle!
- Willena (9/5): Superb -
- Willena (9/5): Superb - The room was very spacious and it was fun to have monkeys around in the morning and evenings. It was a lot of tall steps to the top floor room (though it was worth it).
- M.c. (8/5): Central location - We were in the lower building so luckily not many stairs to climb. Very good shower with good water pressure. The ceiling fan is nice. Hotel is centrally located. We just booked the accommodation for 1 night after coming back from a 2D jungle trekking with another organisation. Beware of the monkeys and don’t leave anything on your balcony. The hotel couldn’t help it but the bar next door had loud music till 3am. Seems to happen on Saturday evenings. Made it difficult for us to sleep after a tiring jungle trekking.
- Judith (10/5): Gorgeous views - Unbelievable beautiful view. The rooms are nice and the outdoor bathroom was so cool. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. We did a one day trek with guides Irpan and Angar who were absolutely the best. We got to see 8 Orang Utan. It was an incredible experience.
- Noel (9/5): Amazing people and location - Super location in village, the staff were very warm and helpful in every way. Vyca was exceptionally helpful and arrange our tours and transfers with great professionalism and good humour. It was super!
- Charlotte (8/5): Good place to stay. - The room was huge with plenty of space, great balcony and location central to get to everywhere on the main street. We stayed on a Saturday night and the place next door had loud, live music till 3am! I appreciate the hotel cant help that but hard to sleep!
The stayed in the top room of the first building, the tin roof proved very loud when it rained of there was monkeys on it.
We could only get boiling water out of the shower, too hot to use, when i spoke to staff, he sorted the problem and said give it 10min then unfortunately shower was cold. This only happened one day, other days great warm showers!
We stayed in the lower building, we heard that there were 150 stairs to the next set of rooms, thank god we didnt have that!
- Campbell (10/5): Excellent stay in great newly built location - We stayed four nights. We were situated in an “annex” guesthouse that was right on the river with a balcony. Beautiful. Can’t speak to the main building. Nothing
- Gonzalo (6/5): Great hotel and team but we had an expected hiccup - The place is super well located and close to bars, restaurants and local shops. The views from the room face the river and the jungle which was great.
The staff and management were incredibly helpful throughout our stay and they also went above and beyond to deliver my wife's glasses back to Singapore after forgetting them in our room. On the not so positive side, during our stay one of the bars near the hotel decided to throw a big party which apparently it's been going on for years. The party started at half past midnight and it finished at 3 am. The music was incredibly loud making it impossible to sleep at all.
Had we known about this, we wouldn’t have booked this place, especially when you want to wake up early to go trekking.
My advice would be to move further north to avoid the noise.
- Harriot (9/5): Superb - Staff were friendly and helpful, bed was comfortable and room was clean. It was a bit hot a night, as I was under a mosquito net so couldn't feel the room fan, but I think this is to be expected
- Axel (9/5): Superb - Amazing place, great views and the shower was just amazing Room was a little hot
- Sheri (8/5): Beautiful but room for improvement - We chose this hotel as it was associated with our previous accomodator in Pulau Weh (Pulau Weh Paradise, which we adored). Beautiful view from the room & hot shower. Nice location for restaurants, shops, and the start of our trek. Staff not attentive & hospitality seemed lacking. Upon returning from our trek to collect our bags, we were questioned as to whether we'd paid for our breakfast at checkout the day before (which we found mildly offensive, as we wouldn't walk away on an unpaid). We also thought we were supposed to get a discount re: coming from the partner resort, but no staff ever spoke with us so we weren't able to bring this up...
- seriously_yas (10/5): When a dream come true - Hotel Orangutan was just as perfect for our 3 days trek. We did the trek with our 12 years old daughter and it was very special. From arranging our airport transfers and providing lodging, which was amazing, the staff was very professional, friendly and informative, nice to visit with and very helpful.
We had 2 guides for us. Our main guide Monang is very experienced and very into the animal welfare, the second one (sorry forgot his name) was young as he's the new generation. but so helpful. The cook made us just excellent lunch and diner.
We had to chance to see 11 orangutans. Some semi wild and some wild, male and mama with baby :-)
We also saw Thomas's leaf monkeys, Macaque, Lizard...
This was a bucket list since a long time. We recommend 100% the whole crew and the hotel ! Don't hesitate to ask for Monang as guide !
Yasmina, Diego & Alexa
- Julian (8/5): Very good -
- Riccardo (9/5): Superb -
- Bishop (10/5): Exceptional - Our stay at Hotel Orangutan and visit to Bukit Lawang was the highlight of our trip and one of my favorite places I have ever visited. First, our trekking guides Amin and Holland were exceptional and our experience seeing the orangutans was magical.
Abdoullah, our driver was also excellent. Easy to communicate with, an excellent driver, and a very pleasant, interesting man.
Staff at the Hotel Orangutan, including Vyca, were very pleasant, good fun, and helpful. Everything was very well organized.
Anastasia, who helped organize our trip was excellent- considering our flights, dates and plans changed 3 times!
Bukit Lawang is so charming. We had great food, many monkeys, and music in resturants every night. The people were so nice. I cannot recommend a trip to Bukit Lawang and Hotel Orangutan enough.

- DrBSweden (6/5): OK, not great. - Hotel Orangutan is conveniently located in the middle of the village, close to the river, other guest houses, shops and bars/restaurants. The room was just OK. No AC, the fan spun so slowly that it didn't really circulate much air. I also suspect there may have been termites or something in the wooden bed frame, as there was fresh, fine sawdust on the floor (see pic). The bathroom was fun and unique - built straight up against the cliff face. The sink in particular was unique. The shower was cold water only.
One good thing was the proprietor let me take a shower after a 2-day trek in the jungle, even though I wasn't staying there that night. It was nice not to gas the driver who later drove me back to Medan.
It was fine staying there, but there are probably better places in town for the same amount of money.
- Kate (7/5): A funky hotel with lovely staff - The design of this hotel is amazing with a lot of attention to detail. It has been built into the hillside - so a very steep climb up a lot of steps if you are in one of the suites, but amazing views of the village and jungle. We just had a standard double so only one flight of steps, which I was pleased about! The bathroom is carved out of the rock, so a very jungle funky feel to it. However although trendy it was rather dark and a bit damp just like a cave! Also the basin water pressure was just a dribble even though it looked really nice it wasn’t very practical. Shower -cold water only - was very good. Staff here are lovely and this is the first place we’ve stayed in Asia where they don’t sell water in plastic bottles, but will re fill your own, and use metal straws not plastic.🙂for that alone we would recommend Orangutan Hotel. There is one ceiling fan which is too slow to be effective when the lights are on. An additional side fan would have really helped us sleep in the 30 degree heat. 2 little bed side tables to put things on would be really useful, the hammock is too low to use, you end up on the floor - but hey these are very minor problems and for £15 a night an absolute bargain!
- Stef (9/5): Superb - Beautiful balcony with great views, welcoming staff, nice food, amazing jungle and rafting tour.
Very serene and relaxing. Water in the room, mosquito net, nice decent sized bed, big bathroom.
Thank you!! 🙏 The Food is really nice! Restaurant overall could get a bit more attention - bit more lively and menu a bit better presented. One of the boys played the guitar amazingly - make something out of it 😊
- Michael (10/5): - This was an amazing place to stay. The owner and the employees were abundantly friendly and helpful, food was great, the atmosphere was unlike anything else.
- jennywhitham (10/5): A great place to stay in Bukit Lawang - We stayed for 6 nights at the Hotel Orangutan, including a three day jungle trek. We had the room right at the top of the hill which was beautiful with wonderful views across the river and village.
Vyca and all of his staff could not have be nicer or more helpful. The guides Rio and Ari were lovely and all of the activities they arranged for us excellent.
- Oksana (8/5): Very good - Beautiful view and helpful staff
- Robert (3/5): Discussed at length privately with property owner -
- Sheana (10/5): Trip of a liftetime - What an awesome place! Such nice people who greet you and help you with your bags. Hotel Orangutan is right in the mix of it all with many places to eat/get coffee nearby. I loved my overnight jungle trek with them, my guide Rio was amazing and I saw 12 orangutans, white handed gibbons, siamang gibbons, and all 4 types of monkeys. I will remember this stay forever Sometimes the shower water wasn't hot or was very low pressure but it's the jungle so it didn't bother me
- P5823HMharrys (10/5): Very friendly staff and Nice jungle trek - Excellent place to stay with Nice view and room and very friendly staff.
Did the 3 days trekking from Here.
We saw a lot of monkeys apes and the food we got in the evening was so delicious. Also breakfast.
When we came back at the hotel we stayed another night to get Some good sleep before our flight the next day. The staff helped also with arranging the airport transfer.
- Jeff (10/5): - The staff at the Orangutan Hotel rocks!! Their Orangutan Treking guides certainly live up to their reputation, and I managed to see several Orangutans on my one and only trek into the rainforest..I was later told that many people spend days in the jungle without seeing anything, so I feel very lucky.
The hotel has some great views and is located in an excellent spot in relationship to local shops and restaurants.
- Valeria (7/5): Kind staff, good trekking organization - Good location for trekking. Staff was super helpful and nice. Noisy when it rained and not super clean because of bugs. I guess normal in the jungle
- Timo (10/5): Your must-stay when visiting the Sumatran Orangutans! - Perfectly located for trekking the Gunung Leusser National Park. Hotel Orangutan is only a couple of minutes away from the entry gate of the home of the Sumatran Orangutans.
Besides its perfect location, Hotel Orangutan has the most wonderful staff one could imagine and hires the best guide (—> Jerry) for an unforgettable trekking experience in the jungle.
- Dharmesh (9/5): Lovely short stay :) - Beautiful hotel, with amazing views if you're in a higher up room.
The room was large and clean, and the bathroom was certainly unique.
The staff were friendly, and the dinner and breakfast was delicious ! They communicated well on emails etc ..
I booked their taxi service from Medan airport, which worked out great, and the same driver dropped me back to Medan straight after my Jungle Trek. I'd recommend this service.
A few points to note .. pack relatively light, as the hotel cannot be reached by car. So the final stretch you will either need to walk a distance with your bags, or jump on the back of a motorbike.
Would highly recommend staying at this hotel if visiting Bukit Lawang :) The water for the sink in the bathroom was merely a dribble, and the shower handle came off as soon as I touched it. I reported this to the team as I was leaving. Also, if you are in a higher room, be prepared for quite a few steps to reach your room (but rewarded with lovely views)
- Robbie (10/5): A very memorable stay. We extended by a few days as we were enjoying the vibe of the town and the people so much. We did - The staff were all incredible!!
Welcoming and friendly the Hotel Orangutan staff made us feel right at time immediately.
The Hotel is exceptionally well placed and made getting around easy! Our room had an amazing view across the river and into the jungle :)
- Tina (10/5): Great staff - Staff were amazing, very friendly and helpful to everyone, they made us feel very welcome. The balcony rooms have and incredible view of the jungle and village. Would definitely stay again Nothing
- Heidi (9/5): Superb -
- Natalia (8/5): Very good -
- Heidi (7/5): Good -
- Roy (10/5): A Jungle Experience - Fabulous hotel location and layout. The one day trek was fantastic and saw lots of orangutans, monkeys and gibbons, and also a snake. Jerry was a terrific guide, pointing out all the wildlife as we went along. I can also recommend the banana pancakes for breakfast.
- Sara (9/5): A magical stay with the BEST staff - Hotel Orangutan is magical thanks to its AMAZING staff!!! Every single person I met was so friendly and made me feel like home.
Special thanks to Andra for being the best guide and to his mom for making the best nasi goreng I ever had in the region.
The room is clean with a beautiful view and is ideally located between the center of the town and the jungle. They offer all kinds of treks and also private transport with highly professional drivers.
I really recommend! Nothing
- Maria (7/5): Good - Staff Sheets and towels
- manifestif (10/5): Wow - We cannot recommend Andra and her mate Yosia enough to accompany you on a jungle trek to see our cousins the orangutans. They are exemplary professional and have an irresistible sense of humor. My partner who has a fragile ankle was helped all the way down the steep descents. We loved our experience and also loved our stay at ourang hotel. An unparalleled experience. Thank you very much Andra and Yosia
- Katsiaryna (8/5): Very welcoming staff will make your stay memorable! - Very helpful staff, spacious room, nice location The only concern was the noise - our roof was metallic and when something was falling on it (which was all the time) the noise was waking us up. Apart from that very lovely guesthouse:)
- Andre (9/5): Super starting point for an unforgettable jungle trek. Thanks to our guide we saw eight Orang Utans (some pretty close) - The setting was stunning and the staff so lovely and caring. The climb up the room was challenging.
- Shyamal (8/5): Nice, quaint property with cosy feel; walk up to property was tough and lack of AC was challenging. - Very good breakfast
Service with a smile from the staff
Great views of the valley from our room's balcony Lack of AC made sleeping difficult (although our room did have fans)
The steps to reach our room (one of the furthest up the hill in the hotel) were very steep and climbing them at night with suitcases was a real challenge
If you stay at this property, suggest taking light rucksacks or confirming with the hotel staff if you can have a room closer to the reception / lower down the hill
- Serhiyk (10/5): Amazing hotel in the jungle village - Fantastic hotel, very friendly and helpful hotel team, great location. Rooms are tastefully decorated, bed is convenient. We have arranged the jungle tour through the hotel and everything about it was amazing: tour guide and the team, fruit snacks and tasty lunch, opportunity to see orangutans in their natural habitat as close as couple of meters away, great and sometimes quite challenging jungle walk and the highlight of the trip - tubing on the river. Highly recommend Orangutan hotel to everyone traveling to Bukit Lawang!
- Nadine (8/5): Very good -
- Alex1871 (8/5): Staff great, accomodation needs attention - The staff were probably the friendliest and most helpful staff group we've ever encountered during our travels The facilities/ decor etc seemed a little tired. A bit more attention to detail i.e working mosquito nets and storage would have made the stay much much better. Also, it seemed the shower was always freezing cold or scorching hot - if the water was on
- Richard (8/5): We enjoyed looking over the river from the balcony and watching the monkeys. Very relaxing - Great location, friendly helpful staff, big room
And lots of character. Also they have great coffee Only that the shower was little more than a dribble
- Andrea (9/5): Penthouse with a view - We stayed in the penthouse of this hotel, which is located high on the hillside. Spacious, nicely furnished room with beautiful view in the river valley. Ample terrace with hammock. Original but efficient and clean terrace bathroom. Very friendly staff. The penthouse must be reached through a very steep staircase, which can be hard to climb in the hot Indonesian climate. One of the double beds was much more comfortable than the other.
- pammalu (10/5): Hotel Orangutan - a dream come true! - Hotel Orangutan was my go-to resource for my visit to Bukit Lawang, from arranging my airport transfers to helping plan my activities (jungle trek, village tour, elephant wash) and providing lodging, which was amazing - the penthouse room. I also had delicious meals at Hotel Orangutan. The staff was very professional, friendly and informative, nice to visit with and very helpful. Everything went smoothly and couldn't have been better.
Bukit Lawang is a very special place, on the river, in the jungle. The Indonesian people are friendly and welcoming, English was spoken in the village. I was thrilled to get into the jungle and see my first orangutan in the wild, then another and another, mostly mammas and their young. We saw macaque and Thomas Leaf monkeys and a jungle peacock, got great pictures. The jungle trek wrapped up at the river and I was so thankful for the raft trip back to the village which allowed the chance to rinse and cool off. The raft trip was a blast, lots of rapids and I felt quite safe with the guide.
This was a bucket list item and I would love to visit again.

- Yves (6/5): Pleasant - Nice location but do not go here on a Saturday evening. It seems to be the weekly party day. Impossible to sleep in this location until 3am
- Dr (8/5): Excellent for the price but... - Excellent balcony, very clean space, spacious room and lovely bathroom, kind reception and nice services. However, impossible to sleep well: horrible bed and pillows, the most poor quality of the matelas. No blanket. Cold water and low cost "shower". No opacity on the curtains: so plenty of light early morning is to disturbing. The worst: extremely noisy because of the absolutly hugly village karaoke + wood cuting + workers and building process around.
